Dec 6th 2005 Tuesday afternoon – 14.00hrs…

With no cases and all reports done and dusted the team was having an afternoon sabbatical. In truth they were starting on the bullpen decorations. Jack and Sue had swung out at lunchtime and brought a small fir tree that would sit nicely on one of the spare desks against the back wall. Now they were attacking the tree with lights, tinsel and a variety of ornaments, both old and new. Well all were participating expect Myles who just scowled at it all being his patent Mr Scrooge and Bobby who just sat quietly at his desk playing solitary on the computer.

Tara watched him quietly as she draped a silver strand of tinsel around her neck like a boa. Gaining some inner strength she danced over to him, her red fuzzy Santa hat swaying on her head as she went and perched herself on the edge of the desk.

Her soft flowery perfume alerted Bobby of her approach before he saw her. He bit on his lower lip and concentrated on the game in front of him determined to stay distant from the group.

“Bobby” she sung out to him battling her eyelashes.

“What’s up?” he replied his eyes fixed on the screen a look of sheer determination on his face.

“Come and have some fun. They is cookies”

“I am good- thank you,” he snapped briefly looking up at her.

Tara felt the sting and slid off the desk and with a pensive look back she walked over to the others.

From the corner of his eye he watched her go. He knew his behaviour was out of character and order but he didn’t feel like himself anymore. Every year he struggled around Christmas time and this year it seemed unbearable. Usually he would play up and act the fool to cover his raw emotions but this year he didn’t even have that in him. Blinking harshly he returned to the game he had lost all interest in as the singing and laughter mocked his mood. He felt so alone, so empty like an opaque vase bare of flowers. Struggling to keep composure he logged off and heading out with his head hanging avoiding all eye contact.

Tara eyes followed him sadness pining in them. She felt like a granite wall had just been constructed around him, one to keep everyone away from him especially her. She hung an angel and sighed. She felt useless; she had never seen such pain before on his face. It was like grieve but no one had died and she simply couldn’t understand it.

Bobby walked out into the cold air and felt it’s fingers curling around his blood vessels. Shivering he slouched into his jacket and scarf, trying to escape from the world or at least from his world. His eyes nipped with the cold and with tears that was threatening to fall. His feet aimlessly took him down familiar streets, passed usual haunts and into the park. The fresh snow creating a clean canvas for the world, a robin high in a tree whistled it’s joyful song of praise and the sounds of children laughter in the distance tugged at his heartstrings as he trudged thru the park. Happy memories tried to invade his depressive mind but they were not strong enough. He watched as a snowball zoomed passed him with a small boy quickly following it. A sad smile went across his face a he went on.

Daylight was fading fast and Tara was starting to get really concerned with the extended absence of Bobby. Her heart was throbbing in her chest, making an executive decision she grabbing her coat and hurried out.

Trying to think like Bobby, which in itself scared her she headed towards the local coffee shop. Her journey took her into all of Bobby’s know local haunts and with each disappointment she felt her heart pound more and more. Fear was trickling through her veins. As a final stop she decided to try the park even through the snow had started to fall once again. Pulling her scarf tight and digging her hands deep inside her pockets she ploughed into the white park. She watched as couples huddled together and raced out of the fast falling snow, children laughed and tried to catch the flakes on their tongues as they followed cold looking parents. As she explored she felt as if she had fallen into a magical winter land. Snow drifted up the side of trees forming interesting shapes and pictures. Branches hung low with layers of crisp snow and everything just shone like there was a light in the ground. Deeper she went and further into the silent park. Despite the glistening beauty she felt nervy, the muffled world and the absence of people she felt the hairs stand up on the back of her neck.

Rounding a bend in the path she lifted her head and saw him. His slumped shoulders and pathetic stance caused her heart to skip a beat. Feeling suddenly nervously she walked towards the man sitting hunched up on a brushed clear bench, the snow falling around him. Tentatively she approached him, coughing slightly she stood at his side. Seeing no reaction she brushed the snow off the bench with her gloved hand and sat down beside him. She took a peek at his face and saw it marred with tear tracks and pain. Silently she took his gloved hand into her own and held it in her lap.

Bobby once again blinked harshly feeling her small hand fill his large one felt so right, too right but they was nothing he was going to do about it today. Secretly he was glad that she was there and more so that she wasn’t demanding answers or firing questions at him. He squeezed her fingers and sighed. Together they sat in silence watching as the world turned a brighter shade of white before them.

Dec 6th 2005- 18.00

Tara closed the door behind her and rushed to switch the fire on. Her body felt like a block of ice that was in desperate need of defrosting. Feeling the heat flood her from the slowing rising fire she started to come alive again. She tossed her jacket, hat, gloves and scarf onto the chair in the corner and sat cross-legged in front of the blazing fire. The orange flickering glow the only light in the entire room. She leaned towards the fire and watched the flames lick one another. She watched them grow and kiss, she felt in awe of their majestic and dangerous power. Sighing profoundly her thoughts echoed back to an hour ago.

As darkness descended fully upon them they rose from the bench and hand in hand slowly dragged themselves through the snow and out of the idyllic park. Standing on the edge of the street corner Bobby shuffled his numb feet before he cautiously leaned forward and planted a whisper of a kiss on her rosy cheeks.

“Thank you for everything” he said in a soft voice in her frozen ear. Tara watched him walk away and gradually he disappeared into the snow bright distance; a single tear traced her face.

She hugged her knees up to her chest and watched as more and more flames sprung to life. It doesn’t take a genius to realise that Bobby was struggling with inner demons. Tara rested her heavy head and heart on her knees.

“I wish he could have peace in his heart” whispered Tara to the flames as another solitary made its lonely voyage.

Myles sat in his leather wingback chair, a single malt whisky in one hand and his dog-eared copy of Mac Beth in the other hand. The notes of Mozart waltzed around him lifting his spirits and sending them soaring into to the crisp winter night. He felt his muscles relax and the tension evaporate from him. He felt complete here he was himself. No falsehoods or sarcastic comments just absolute peace and quiet. Moving from act to another a thought suddenly grabbed him.

“this is what peace looks like to me” he said to the warm air surrounding him.

once that was clear he returned to Mac Beth and his dilemmas.

WED DEC 7th 2005- 19.00hrs

Sue beamed as Jack rejoined her at the table in the relaxed restaurant. She took a sip of her still water and watched as Jack stared at her. Their moment was interrupted by the arrival of the waitress. Quietly they ate their respective meals, with every now and then one of them would smile deeply at the other before returning to the task at hand. With the main course plates removed, they say and watched as fresh snow floated to the ground.

“So beautiful” commented Sue staring in awe at the wonder of snow.

“Indeed” said Jack his eyes sneaking glances at Sue’s profile. He treasured the times he could watch her. He loved drinking in her smile that smiled for the world, to watch her eyes shine and twinkle for everyone to see. He cherished the way her hair was like pure woven silk and he longed no desired to lope his fingers into those tendrils, to embrace their touch and heavenly scent. He adored her eyelashes, the elongated reverent lashes that stroked her cheeks with every blink or wink. He felt himself drowning in her splendid. He felt a pull at his heart, a magnetic force that drew him closer to his attraction, to the one he belonged to. Without thought his hand migrated over to where hers rested. The memorising graceful movements of her long slender hands captured him and his own hand at this point in time captured hers as it laid itself upon her hand. He curled his fingers into her palm and was pleasant surprised to feel her response positively to his touch as she squeezed his fingers. Together they sat and watched as flakes pirouetted in the cold night air.

Later on as they walked home from the car Jack couldn’t help but slip his hand into hers and give it a squeeze. Sue shyly blushed and smiled at everyone who passed them by on the street. She felt as if she springing from cloud to cloud-fast approaching number nine. Come to a halt at the door, Sue turned to face the face of the man who filled her dreams both the woken ones as well as the sleep filled ones.

Jack tentatively lifted his hand and brushed a few sparkling flakes out of her golden locks. Sue shivered with such an innocent intimate touch. His hand slowly hovered above her rosy cheeks. He swallowed her eyes and saw them grow misty and twinkle at the same time. Seeing passion and fire as well buried deep within those windows he allowed his hand to dip and touch her face. Feeling his hand against her bare skin Sue shivered with anticipation and cupped her cheek into his hand. Jack watched in wonder as his emotions were mirrored on her innocent face. Tenderly and unhurriedly he lowered his mouth and with a hint of a kiss that whispered magic savoured her.

The kiss was brief but sometimes the most powerful actions are the smallest.

Feeling the cold air return to her heated face she opened her eyes and read Jack’s delicious (literally) lips.

“Goodnight. Sleep well”

She signed goodnight as she fell back against the wall. Her knees had suddenly gone all funny on her. She watched him swagger away a noticeable spring in his step. Feeling like a schoolgirl again she giggled as she climbed the stairs. Levi watched her in amusement.

Kid you really know how to get me writing... a cherry and everything.. tongue.gif

Jack slammed the door shut behind and leapt forward onto the seat and with a gleeful shout yelled Woo Hoo. He felt so alive and so utterly blessed. Flopping back onto the cushions he laughed. Finally he had kissed her; finally he tasted her out with the excuse of work. Finally he had fulfilled one of his dreams. Closing his eyes he allowed himself to float back to that moment when electricity surged through him from his toes to his lips. His lips were still tingling with the recent encounter. He drew a finger across them as he remembered the exceptional taste that he had not long experienced. He would love to explore that taste more and maybe he thought this year his Christmas wish could come true. Leisurely putting his hands behind his head he smiled as he remembered the way she moved, just like a butterfly he thought, graceful and stunning.

Sue skipped into the apartment and twirled watching her winter coat spin out around her. She felt giddy and alive. Giggling she tossed her hat on the stand and escaped from her coat. Spinning she leant forward and ruffled Levi head before gliding into the kitchen. She started to sing winter wonderland from memory as she filled the kettle and made herself a cup of tea. She took the hot mug and headed for the seat by the window. Placing the mug down on the sill she watched as people rushed about their business dashing in and out of the Starbucks below the apartment.

Jack is such a gentleman she thought. She sweet, so considerate, so gentle. The kiss lingered both in her memory and on her lips. She knew that was one memory she would take with her to the grave and beyond. She could have sworn she could feel the imprint of his lips upon her own. Her giddiness only increased with her walk down memory lane. Her cheeks were staring to hurt from the smile she had plastered on her face but as far as she was concern that smile was not going anywhere anytime soon. She felt such an overwhelming sense of inner peace and strength. Realising such resulted in a drift of her thinking from the handsome man to the timely subject of peace.

“Peace” she said to Levi

“Is about the heart and life and the world around us. It is something that can and can’t be touched and held but can always be felt and experienced. It is connected to love”

And with the topic of love entering her train of thought she smiled her thoughts instantly filled with that of Jack. She adored the way his nose crinkled whenever he laughed, the way he winked which caused her to lean, the way his hair looked so touchable. The way his smile would totally lift her heart and make it soars amongst the doves. She loved his determination, his passion, and his fire. She loved the way his mind processed everything and the way his humour worked. She loved his spark and vibrant heart.

Watching a couple kiss under the soft light of the streetlamp she sighed happily,

“I love him,” she said fogging up the glass. The truth punched her hard in the chest. “I LOVE HIM,” she shouted out to Levi. “I love him. I… love ….him. I am completely and hopelessly in love with Jackson Samuel Hudson.”

The truth rushed thru her setting her free. She felt this awesome power surge thru her as the denial seeped away and in it place was left a burning fire. Now she had to decide what to do next?

Dec 7th 2005- 21.00

Sue in one swift movement was out of the chair and kissing Levi head. Time was of the essence and she was embracing life and love. Spinning she grabbed her coat, hat, scarf and gloves and wrapped herself up warmly. Fixing Levi’s lease she started to sing, ‘O ‘come all ye faithful’ before she whirled into the bracing night.

By the time she had reached Jack’s place, her cheeks shone with the cold and her eyes sparkled with love. Eagerly she knocked on the door and waited with baited breath. Inch by inch his flesh appeared before her around the door and beat-by-beat her heart thumped in anticipation.

“Sue” he said shocked, “what are you doing here? Are you okay?”

“Never been better” she said walking into the pad, “however I have something I would like to tell you”

Jack closed the door slowly and watched as she shed her outer clothes. Sue turned to face him and said, “Do you think we could sit?”

“Umm sure, sorry” he said leading her through into the living room.

Together they sat side by side on the plush sofa. Both of their nerves felt alive and extreme. Jack just wondering what she was going to say and Sue’s for what she was about to proclaim. Sue sat staring at him while taking several deeps breaths, rolling her shoulders she felt ready.

“Jack” she stared softly, “What I am about to say I have never said to another man before and I don’t say it lightly.”

Feeling her nerves rearing their ugly heads again she shakily brushed a tendril off her face. Exhaling softly she turned her eyes back to Jack.

“I love you,” she said simply and truthfully, her eyes reflecting her inner soul and heart.

Jack breath was captured in the back of his throat as the wonderment of the words tumbled over him. He watched as desire merged into nerves and then into fear as his silence prolonged. Realising exactly what this meant to him a smile broke out on his face. Grabbing Sue’s hand he held it tightly.

“You really love me”

She nodded while gently chewing her lower lip, a red tinge appearing brighter and brighter on her cheeks.

“Only in my wildest dreams have I imagined you saying those amazing words to me. For years now I have wanted to hear you say those and I never thought I was worthy of you love”

Sue stared at his lips somewhat confused.

“Sue I love you too” he finally managed to utter.

He watched as her face changed from confusion to shock to joy. Her eyes rose to lock with his.

“You do?” she asked shakily

He nodded before leaning forward and slowly fusing their lips together. Their merged as one as their hearts beat furiously within their chest and their soul flew high. The truth was out there and they had discovered it.

Thursday 8th Dec 200 08.00hrs

Lucy nudged Tara and giggled nodding her head to the doorway and then over to Sue who was sitting behind her desk. The two friends watched as Sue’s Jack radar sprung into gear. Sneaking a peek they watched as a fresh face Jack waltzed into the pen, the huge smile occupying his face was noticeable but everyone including anyone at a distance. Sue shyly looked up and smiled and proceeded to go rosy when Jack wink at her. Jack loved the colour red on her. Everyone felt the love in the room that morning, it was alive and free. Even more so since the change in the rules and regulations. The couple was observed all day by every person in the room including anyone who wandered in throughout that day and strangely enough many women just happened to pass that way on that particular day.

The light faded and the day slip into evening and the team started to pack up.

“Excuse Me,” shouted Tara waving her hands in the air, “I would like to remind everyone that tomorrow night is the first Elfploration meeting and we shall be meeting at 5pm in the conference. Please don’t forget your hats and to have an answer to the question; what would peace look like to you?”

Jack just smiled over at Sue, Lucy and D nodded in response and Myles groaned loudly and huffed as he flounced out of the room.

“Scrooge” muttered Lucy.

All this time Bobby sat quietly at his desk stapling leaves of paper. He felt his heart shake with trepidation. He had promised Tara out of guilt that he would be a willing participant yet here he was with no ideas for an answer. Grabbing his belongings he slipped out quietly behind Jack and Sue.

Digging his hands deep into his pockets he trudged through the slush, blanking out the cheers and exciting laughter around him. All he wanted was some peace and quiet in his heart. He felt so detached at the moment, not just from people but from his self as well. Also he was plagued with guilt for feeling like this. He wanted to open up but he couldn’t. He couldn’t burden another soul with his issues. He had managed each year to survive just barely mind you but this year seemed different. Maybe it was all this talk of peace that was putting him at unease, or maybe it had something to do with his increasingly recognisable feelings for one of his co-workers perhaps it was a mixture but whatever it was he couldn’t pin point it. His travelling feet had carried him home.

Closing the door behind him he feel a sense of absolute loneliness. The stillness of the house was only matched by his heart. He raised his eyes to the roof and sniffed loudly as he tried to keep the tears at bay. He hated feeling so weak and vulnerable it was not the way a man was brought up to feel. Anger at himself started to grow within him and he flung with such force his bag across the hall before collapsing into a heap against the door. Sobs racked his frame as the tears spilled forth splashing on the floor as time went by.

How can I answer the question when I don’t know what peace is right now? He thought sadly. But I can’t let Tara down. I promised her. Sniffling loudly he vowed that if he needed to he would lie but he would not let her down. He could be miserable but he would not inflict his pain on her. Drawing all his energy together he struggled to his feet and shuffled away to spend another lonely night together, just him and his memories.
marlo29
Whatever those memories are, they are eating at Bobby, he should share them with Tara ...it wouldn't be a burden for Tara and it would be a relief for him
