Part 18 (Very short I know but next part is the opposite)
Brian had identified Eric Griffiths as the man who drove the car regarding the incident with Sue and also the man who had threatened him when he was about to go to the police. SOG had had a van outside Eric’s apartment waiting for sign of the man assuming he was not at the bottom of the Potomac. There was still no sign of a body although the evidence suggested that the driver of the vehicle had escaped through the window, and Brian had been taken to the ER to have his injuries looked at. The team also ventured into the home of Eric but found it was lacking in evidence for any of his illegal activities which was frustrating from an evidence point of view. The man was obviously very careful.

The team headed to their respective homes that evening tired after their long day. Jack soon fell asleep on his bed, dinner forgotten he didn’t even bother to undress. Lucy and Tara however decided to go out for something to eat attempted to get Sue to go with them but she declined she said she needed to sleep. Sue tried to sleep but it was not happening, it was past nine and Lucy had yet to return as she let herself out of the apartment with Levi and went to see Brian, there were some things that she had wanted to ask him that she didn’t want Jack and Bobby to hear.

Dewberry followed she couldn’t stop Sue from doing this, Sue had to do this to heal and all she could do was stay with her and try to keep her safe from danger.

Part 19
“I didn’t expect to see you again” he told her glancing nervously towards the door.
“You’re safe” Sue told him.
They were in the hospital the doctors wanted to keep him in overnight for observation for his injuries and exposure to the cold as he had been sleeping rough for a bit.
“I wanted to know why? Why you really came to me for help. I would have thought I was the last person”
“When John told me you worked for the FBI, you remember John?”
“Yes”
“Well he put a kind word in for me to your parents. I told them I was hoping to meet up with you that I was back in the area meeting old friends from high school and I remembered that they liked me, still did it seemed, so I guess you never told them that I humiliated you”
“No I have never told anyone” she finally admitted
“I’m sorry, it’s a bit late to apologise now though”
“No it’s never too late to say you’re sorry. God taught me that”
“You’re still into all that then”
“Yes my faith is important part of my life of who I am”
Brian nodded “I respect your beliefs I just don’t think I have any of my own”
“You wouldn’t have said that before”
“No I was younger then, but I am probably just as stupid, look at the mess I am in now. I’m sorry about deceiving your parents too” he added “They were happy to give me you email and numbers to contact you. I was wrong maybe to call”
“God works in ways we don’t always understand” she told him standing up gingerly testing her foot out which was now feeling better but not quite back to it’s normal self.

Sue walked out of the hospital and sat in her car, she didn’t want to go home not yet. Dewberry watched her thinking it was now or never and weaved some magic making Sue take a decision that she probably wouldn’t have considered, bearing in mind what the time was. Sue drove off and Dewberry inched closer and closer to Levi, he didn’t seem to mind and she snuggled into his furry coat for warmth.

Lucy got home later than night with Tara in tow and they both read the note which was sitting on the kitchen counter.
It read:
Lucy
I have gone out, will be back soon.
Don’t worry.
Sue
“That is not a very helpful note” said Lucy with a frown
“She could be anywhere” declared Tara “Maybe we should call Jack”
“If she’s been going to see Jack surely she would have said” said Lucy
“Why don’t we call him, to check?” Tara suggested.
Lucy nodded but said “I’ll call her on her blackberry first see if we can get hold of her ourselves”.

As Sue arrived at her destination Dewberry knew it was more than over due to weave some superpower elf magic into the situation and that’s exactly what she did as a shower of rainbows shot through the inside of Sue’s car.

The incessant ringing of the phone eventually roused Jack from the heavy sleep he was in groggily he said into the handset “Hudson”
“Jack” said a worried sounding Lucy.
That was enough to jolt Jack into action the tone of her voice startled and worried him “What?” he asked much more with it “What’s wrong Lucy?”
“Have you seen or heard from Sue?”
“No” he said his heart hammering wildly in his chest as his palms started to sweat with fear “Why?”
“She went out, she left a not saying not to worry but she didn’t say where she was going” Lucy explained
“Have you tried her on the blackberry?” he asked
“Yes and no answer”
The doorbell rang at Jack’s end and he staggered off the bed out of the bedroom to answer it, looking through the spy hole he saw Sue and Levi there.
“Errrr Lucy she’s here, I mean the doorbell rang and she’s standing outside”
Lucy let out the breath that she had been unwittingly holding and said “That’s a relief”
“I’ll make sure she gets home safe later” he promised
“Thanks Jack” said Lucy

He ushered her into his apartment and she noticed his dishevelled appearance. “Are you okay Jack?” she asked him
“Yes”
“But you look….” She trailed off as her gaze travelled down his body
“A mess?” he suggested for her and she nodded “Hungry?” he signed and she nodded again then said “Pizza? I have a frozen one in the freezer”
“Sure that would be fine” she replied and watched him as he busied himself with the task
“You know” he told her “Lucy was on the phone she was worried”
“I left a note”
“She said it was vague” he replied running a hand through his already mussed up hair and Sue looked away quickly as all manner of improper thoughts ran through her mind none of which involved Jack with as many clothes on as he had and she wondered where that thought had come from.
“I went to see Brian” she told Jack quietly waiting for him to explode
“What?” he asked incredulously, he couldn’t believe she still amazed him “Why?”
“I needed to talk to him about things”
“You had plenty of time to question him with me and Bobby this afternoon”
“This wasn’t about the case, this was about us”
“Us? As in you and him right” Jack asked feeling of hopelessness and panic welling up inside.
“Yes but I don’t know what you’re thinking but I think you jumping to conclusions”
“What am I supposed to think” he retorted trying not to shout as he knew that would make it harder for Sue to read him.
“I don’t want you to think anything I want to you to listen” she told him “and then form an opinion. Not dive off the high board as if he’s about to whisk me off under his arm”
Jack’s lips formed a thin line as he struggled to calm down, a ping sounded from the kitchen and he said “Pizza’s done”

They sat side by side on the sofa eating neither saying anything after their conversation in the hallway regarding Brian. Dewberry wondered if her mission had been more suitable for a more experienced elf as she sat with Levi watching them their body language said they were angry with each other and she could only hope that it improved before Sue went home.

Feeling better now that he had eaten something he turned to Sue and said “So what? Why did you need to talk to him tonight? What did you have to discuss that couldn’t be discussed at work?”
Sue bit her lip and studied him thoughtfully before replying “I wanted to know how he came by my email and number to contact me and that I forgave him”
“Forgave him for what? The other day?” Jack asked puzzled
“No, not for that he didn’t hurt me did he?”
“Not exactly but it was his fault Eric Griffiths and cronies stared firing at you” Jack told her. ”And then Levi got spooked and ran off and you sprained your ankle”
Sue sighed and said “What I am going to tell you I never told anyone and I don’t even know why I’m telling you now except I want you to understand how I knew him before”
“Okay” he said not sure if he wanted to hear this and for some unknown reason moved closer so that their thighs were touching and the electric current jolted through his system like lightening.

“Yes” said Dewberry high five-ing the air “Sorry” she added to Levi who looked at her wondering what she was doing. “Let’s hope the magic is beginning to work” she told the dog settling beside him once more

“It was a shock to hear from him, it’s been a while” she said
“Were you in love with him?” Jack asked while thinking ‘Hell where did that come from I never meant to say that, maybe she didn’t catch it’
“What makes you ask me that?”
‘Ahhhh! She did read it’ Jack cleared his throat and said “I wondered that’s all” then thought ‘lame, Jack that was a lame answer’
“How about I just tell you than you can comment and ask questions when I’ve finished” Sue suggested
“Okay” he agreed knowing that if he was going to make bad comments like the previous one it would be better if he didn’t make any at all.
“He was not popular or anything but he wasn’t unpopular either. His parents knew mine and my parents liked him encouraged him maybe. There was a Christmas ball, I didn’t want to go, I felt out of place and awkward at things like that, my parents thought, my mother thought it would be good for me to go.”
She paused and he watched her, remembering his promise to keep quiet but he reached for her hand and rubbed the pad of this thumb across the back of it tenderly to encourage her to continue not realising that the simple touch was turning her insides to jelly.
“Anyway he asked me to go in front of my parents who were delighted. I cringed inside but didn’t really have a choice. Brian knew how I felt and well I guess he was nice to me, nicer than usual”
‘creep’ thought Jack
“My Mom made a fuss of the whole ‘date’ thing and brought me a new dress which was really nice but I still didn’t want to go and Brian knew it, but he was still nice to me and I didn’t have any reason to doubt he was being anything than honest. The big day came as I was so nervous about making a fool of myself of being where I felt insecure but Brian came by and told me everything would be okay that he would be right there with me and that we would have a wonderful time” She stopped again and looked at Jack
“What?” he asked “You asked me to keep quiet”
“I’m just amazed you have managed to” she replied
They both looked down at that moment and Jack feeling suddenly self conscious let go of her hand and she suddenly felt bereft and he missed the contact too.
“So what happened next?” he asked to get the conversation back on track
“I got dressed up, Brian came and picked me up and we went to the party. It was crowded nosy I guess because people were shouting and it was hard to read what they were saying”
“Didn’t they sign to you?” he cut in then thought‘you’re supposed to be listening not interrupting Jack get a grip’
“No but they weren’t talking directly to me” she paused again and he couldn’t help but resume his caress of her hand it kept him focused, less likely to blurt out something an insensitive or unthought-out comment.
“In fact, no one spoke to me not even Brian” Sue confessed
“But he was your date” he said thinking ‘whoops I cut in again’ but this time she didn’t seem to mind or notice.
“Yes he was but he spent more time talking and flirting with Debbie Hainsworthy, who was part of the in crowd. He even ignored me when I was standing next to him, the dancing began and he approached Debbie I went to walk to the side but I tripped over the hem of my dress and fell flat on my face. The dancing started around me, people, it’s a bit blurry now but it seemed like those who weren’t stepping over me to dance were laughing and pointing at my misfortune. I was so embarrassed. I ran to the girl’s restroom and stayed there for ages, before standing alone in the corridor. Some girls came along standing a short distance away but I could read them, they were nudging each other and pointing at me saying that I must have been above myself to get a date with Brian in the first place. One girl said it was because our parents knew each other and that Brian felt sorry for me another said it was apparently part of a dare” she said pouring out the events that she had hidden for so long.
Jack could have kicked himself for the earlier comment he had made asking if she had been in love with him but pleased that she felt that she could come to him and talk about something like this, maybe if Lucy had stayed in he wouldn’t have been the one that Sue would have confided in though, she was quiet composing herself for a moment before she carried on he knew she hadn’t finished. Rubbing her hand wasn’t enough so he slipped his arm along her back and hugged her close to him for a minute, just one minute he told himself that would be fine. He felt himself tremor at the contact at the nearness of his body to hers and knew that it was not enough and too much at the same time.
“I went back into the hall I didn’t want to know anymore and I sat in a corner out of the way willing the night to end. I wanted to go home but I didn’t want my mother asking questions so I stuck it out at the ball. Brian took me home, we didn’t talk in the car, he knew what he had done had hurt me. The next week at school was torture people pointing and I know they were talking behind my back I could sense it. And what the girls at the party said was true, he’d made a bet with some of the other guys. Last night I dreamt about it, kind of, except Brian kept turning into you, that’s why I didn’t sleep well” she said concluding her sorry tale. ”And no I never loved him maybe I was infatuated for a time, but I realised something today”
“What?” Jack asked softly wondering why people can sometimes be so cruel and wishing that he could take her pain away.
“That he can’t hurt me anymore, that maybe I had been harbouring the past hurt he had caused, locked inside of me here” she said pointing to her heart “That I have moved on from that day, night, that I can forgive him”
“Sue” Jack said making her look at him right in the eye “I’m sorry you had to go through that. I’m sorry I jumped to the wrong conclusions I guess I was jealous” inside he kicked himself did he really say that? Maybe Bobby had slipped some truth serum in his coffee this afternoon because he hadn’t planned on telling Sue that.
“You’re jealous of Brian?” she asked “You have no reason to be”
“I see that now” he said
They were so close that if he reached out he could kiss her and he swallowed hard he couldn’t let his feelings for her come out now, he couldn’t, he’d kept them hidden for so long except for that jealous comment.
“Jack?” she said gaining his attention and he opened his eyes he hadn’t realised were shut
“Yeah?”
“Hold me” she whispered needing some comfort and he drew her into his arms running his fingers through her silky hair cherishing the moment of holding her close. She breathed in his scent revelling in the moment of being in his arms she felt safe, she felt as if she was home.
Dewberry breathed in a sigh of relief things were definitely improving but she had a sneaky suspicion that her task was far from over.

Jack could have kicked himself for the earlier comment he had made asking if she had been in love with him but pleased that she felt that she could come to him and talk about something like this, maybe if Lucy had stayed in he wouldn’t have been the one that Sue would have confided in though, she was quiet composing herself for a moment before she carried on he knew she hadn’t finished. Rubbing her hand wasn’t enough so he slipped his arm along her back and hugged her close to him for a minute, just one minute he told himself that would be fine. He felt himself tremor at the contact at the nearness of his body to hers and knew that it was not enough and too much at the same time.
“I went back into the hall I didn’t want to know anymore and I sat in a corner out of the way willing the night to end. I wanted to go home but I didn’t want my mother asking questions so I stuck it out at the ball. Brian took me home, we didn’t talk in the car, he knew what he had done had hurt me. The next week at school was torture people pointing and I know they were talking behind my back I could sense it. And what the girls at the party said was true, he’d made a bet with some of the other guys. Last night I dreamt about it, kind of, except Brian kept turning into you, that’s why I didn’t sleep well” she said concluding her sorry tale. ”And no I never loved him maybe I was infatuated for a time, but I realised something today”
“What?” Jack asked softly wondering why people can sometimes be so cruel and wishing that he could take her pain away.
“That he can’t hurt me anymore, that maybe I had been harbouring the past hurt he had caused, locked inside of me here” she said pointing to her heart “That I have moved on from that day, night, that I can forgive him”
“Sue” Jack said making her look at him right in the eye “I’m sorry you had to go through that. I’m sorry I jumped to the wrong conclusions I guess I was jealous” inside he kicked himself did he really say that? Maybe Bobby had slipped some truth serum in his coffee this afternoon because he hadn’t planned on telling Sue that.
“You’re jealous of Brian?” she asked “You have no reason to be”
“I see that now” he said
They were so close that if he reached out he could kiss her and he swallowed hard he couldn’t let his feelings for her come out now, he couldn’t, he’d kept them hidden for so long except for that jealous comment.
“Jack?” she said gaining his attention and he opened his eyes he hadn’t realised were shut
“Yeah?”
“Hold me” she whispered needing some comfort and he drew her into his arms running his fingers through her silky hair cherishing the moment of holding her close. She breathed in his scent revelling in the moment of being in his arms she felt safe, she felt as if she was home.
Dewberry breathed in a sigh of relief things were definitely improving but she had a sneaky suspicion that her task was far from over.
Sue....... can't believe she never told anyone before! And Brian, he is a creep!!!

Part 21
Levi nudged Jack and he gradually forced himself to wake up the artificial light from the ceiling seemed brighter than it was. Jack snapped out of his stupor when he realised that first Levi had woken him a up and secondly Sue was sleeping next to him actually that wasn’t quite exact she was in his arms. He thought back to earlier and recalled how somehow sleep had overtaken them both as he held her close. He took time to study her she looked so peaceful and he was reluctant to move and wake her. Levi was fretting buy the door.
“Need to go out buddy?” Jack rasped not having spoke for some time “Okay just let me settle Sue first” As carefully as he could he moved and settled her on the sofa, went into his bedroom found a throw which he laid over her before grabbing a coat, his keys and Levi’s leash and they went out together. On the street Jack looked at his watch it was almost 5am better than last night he thought running a hand through his hair last night he had got in after 5am.
Dewberry flitted up and sat on the top of the sofa rubbing her hands pleased with herself as she wished sweet dreams for Sue who was still visiting the land of nod.
Jack and Levi arrived back half an hour after they left to find Sue still sleeping Jack found a bowl and tipped some food he had picked up from the convenience store on the way back from the walk for Levi, poor dog must be starving and went to have a shower.
Sue was woken by Levi who after eating decided to nuzzle her hand which was hanging down the side of her makeshift bed. She woke suddenly startled wondering where she was and as she came to it hit her, she was still at Jack’s. She looked under the throw to discover she was still dressed; the last thing she recalled was hugging Jack. Frantic she looked around but he was no where in sight maybe he’s gone to bed she though as she made her way through his apartment.
It wasn’t a large apartment and she knew her way round it so she made for the bathroom needing to use it’s facilities rather urgently. She opened the door and was suddenly face to face with Jack who looked down and hastily grabbed a towel to cover himself.
“Jack!” she said alarmed and embarrassed feeling an instant reddening of her cheeks
“Sue!” he said in a similar fashion but without blushing
“I..I..I I’ll just go back to the other room” she managed not daring to look lower than the top of his chest and she turned and hurried out without waiting for him to respond.
Jack shut the door and leant against it not quite sure how that had happened except he had forgotten to lock the door he was so used to living by himself he hadn’t though about it. He forgotten that she looked beautiful when she had just woken up, not that it was something he saw often just when they had gone undercover to be exact, plus she was beautiful when she was sleeping then also when she was awake, hell she was always beautiful who was he kidding, no one except maybe himself.

Sue limping slightly walked into the bullpen, slipped off her coat, settled Levi and sat at her desk.
“You were late last night” Lucy said to Sue coming over to Sue’s desk “What time did you get in?” Sue looked bashful and Lucy added “You did come home last night?” Lucy glanced at Sue then continued “You didn’t did you? I want details”
“It wasn’t like that. I got home after you left for work though”
“Tell me”
“Nothing happened” Sue insisted
“Where’s Jack now?” Lucy asked
“I don’t know” Sue said with a shrug “I drove my car back home, showered, changed and came here”
“You know the doctor said to rest your foot” Lucy said reprimanding Sue for driving
“It’s feeling a lot better, just twinges”
“You brought the cane in with you”
“That was in case I have to go and buy doughnuts for everyone again”
Lucy was just about to ask another question when Jack walked in followed closely by D.
“Good morning Jack” Lucy said brightly
Jack turned in her direction, met eyes with Sue and replied “Lucy, Sue” as he passed by.
Lucy was about to protest again to Sue that something must have happened between her and Jack but Tara spoke to the team “Call, from Mr Ramirez, from the grocery store apparently Eric Griffiths has shown up for work today”
“Is he there now?” asked Jack
“Yes” Tara replied
“Let’s get down there and bring him in” Jack said reaching for his coat which he had only just taken off. Seeing Sue stand he said shortly “Sue you’ll have to stay here”
“It’s not about the ankle is it?” she asked frustrated that she had been stuck in the office for so long
“Yes it’s about the ankle” he replied as he headed out with Bobby and Myles
Sue angry with Jack sat down signing fast.
“What’s Sue saying I can’t catch it she’s going too fast?” Tara asked Lucy
“I think she’s talking to herself, she’s way mad at Jack for leaving her behind”
“I might not be able to hear but I can see that you’re talking about me” She said to the pair.
“Sorry” signed Lucy who said “I was just translating for Tara”

Eric shifted nervously something was going on but he wasn’t sure what it was.
“Eric Griffiths?” said a dark haired man who had just entered the store and approached the counter.
“Who wants to know?” he replied evasively
“FBI” said Jack displaying his ID
Eric looked from Jack to Mr Ramirez back to Jack seeing if he could make a run for it but another guy displaying ID blocked his exit.

“Unless you start talking and cooperate you’re going down” Bobby said to Eric as they sat in the interrogation room.
“What have you got on me?” he asked “Nothing?”
“Oh we’ve got something on you. Tell us about Brian Lockyear” said Jack
“I don’t know what you’re talking about”
“We think you do” interjected Bobby “seeing as you were driving the car whose passengers were shooting at and then abducted him”
“Without a licence it seems also” put in Jack
“Okay I was asked to do that, talk with him, explain a few things, scare him at bit, our first meeting obvious didn’t have an impact” he confessed
“We didn’t say there had been other meetings” said Jack looking Eric straight in the eye.
Eric cursed inside; if he wanted to save his skin he guessed he would have to start talking and fast.

“So you work for a guy called Lawrence Logan” clarified Jack thinking that things can’t get much better than this they had be trying to crack the Lawrence Logan case for a while and this was the lead they had been waiting for having lost their other to the morgue a few days ago.
“When you’re not working for Mr Ramirez?” added Bobby and Eric Griffiths nodded
“Pardon?” said Jack “I didn’t quite hear that”
“Yes” Eric said not believing his bad luck it was nearly Christmas too and he knew he was going down however he helped them with their case.

By Monday morning they knew where the warehouse was where the firearms were stored after they had been dropped off, close to DC and their starting point in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Also a number of other illegal manoeuvres courtesy of Eric Griffiths who would do anything to reduce his sentence and so Jack formed a plan.
Bobby was sent to New Jersey to meet Mr Lee and to acquire the job that Brian had terminated while Jack with the help of Eric formed a plan to get to the warehouse in time for the delivery of the next batch of merchandise.

It was busy no, more than busy and Jack and Sue barely did more than comment on work, both staying late into the evening to try and close the case by Christmas. Dewberry was almost ready to admit that this case was too difficult to crack, the case being Jack and Sue not the Lawrence Logan one.
Dewberry was dozing on the floor snuggled up to Levi when the sight of Jack’s feet caused her to sit up straight and hone in on the conversation.
“Sue” he said waving to get her attention
“Jack” she replied things had kind of been touchy since she met him in the bathroom a couple of days ago.
“Want to grab dinner?” he asked
Sue looked round and noticed for the first time that the bullpen was empty save them and Levi.
“I’m buying” he added knowing that would probably sway her.
“An offer I can’t refuse Mr Hudson” she said with a twinkle in her eye and he let out the sigh he had been holding and knew that she wasn’t still mad with him.
The shut down their systems collected their belongings and left together and Dewberry was now more than awake, that last piece of magic she had weaved at lunchtime was obviously coming into effect, a bit late but still.
“Chinese?” he suggested
“Yes” sounds great “I’m starving” she told him
Over dinner they discussed the Lawrence Logan case plus another two cases which were just as urgent but for which they didn’t have much to go on. Eventually he walked her back to her car.
“Sue” he said frowning
“What?” she asked him “What’s wrong Jack?”
“It’s been a tense couple of days; I feel we’ve hardly seen each other”
“We’ve spent all day with each other”
“That’s not what I meant I meant we didn’t talk about what happened”
“Nothing happened did it? I came over to talk, I talked, you talked we fell asleep and then I burst in on you in the bathroom. Am I omitting anything?”
“No”
“You’re sure nothing happened when we were asleep?” she asked checking
“No I’m sure I took Levi for a walk and left you sleeping”
“Good, thank you, so why do we need to talk about it?”
“I’m sorry if I embarrassed you”
“Oh” she said and even in the light of the street lamp he could see her blush. ”You didn’t I should have knocked first or something”

Dewberry had slept well which was good news for her for today was going to be a testing time for her skills as an elf with a mission.

The case was pulling together in a manner which Jack was pleased about Bobby would reach the designated meeting place this afternoon and the raid was due on the warehouse at the same time.

Jack, Myles and D had left with back up for the raid and with them had gone Dewberry. She had been torn to stay with Sue as she knew Sue was going to have a bad day or to go with Jack for if she didn’t Sue’s day would be even more unbearable.

It was running accordingly to plan Bobby had turned up right on time and everyone waited for the signal. As it was given Eric had a sudden change of heart and gave a warning which was when it started to go terribly wrong.

Tara and Sue sat by their screens watching the chaos ensue when a call came in which Lucy took.
She touched Sue on the shoulder and said “Sue, someone needs to get down to the hospital, Brian Lockyear has been brought back in”
“There are only us here though” she said
“It’s okay you two go I’ll hold the fort” Tara told them
“But ….” She protested wanting no needing to see the outcome of this assignment
“Go” Tara insisted
And Sue and Lucy headed off to the hospital to see what was happening with Brian.

They had arrested Lawrence Logan and Mr Lee was hopefully being impounded by agents in New Jersey at the same time. Spike who had heard Eric warning early was still on the run and he watched as Logan and Griffiths were cuffed and taken away.
Dewberry watched Spike intently waiting for him to make his move so that she could in turn make hers. Jack surveyed the area which was full of boxes marked fragile and he knew without looking what they contained.
The next five minutes happened so fast Spike fired his gun, Jack saw him at the last moment and realised too late the bullet was meant for him , but Dewberry got their first and with a little touch of magic it whizzed straight passed him a hairbreadth away as Myles caught up with Spike.

Jack felt surprised; how it didn’t hit him he just didn’t know.
“Are you okay?” D asked reaching him “It didn’t get you?”
Still stunned Jack shook his head “Have we got everyone?” he asked dazed
D nodded and said “Mission accomplished”

Dewberry had slept well which was good news for her for today was going to be a testing time for her skills as an elf with a mission.

The case was pulling together in a manner which Jack was pleased about Bobby would reach the designated meeting place this afternoon and the raid was due on the warehouse at the same time.

Jack, Myles and D had left with back up for the raid and with them had gone Dewberry. She had been torn to stay with Sue as she knew Sue was going to have a bad day or to go with Jack for if she didn’t Sue’s day would be even more unbearable.

It was running accordingly to plan Bobby had turned up right on time and everyone waited for the signal. As it was given Eric had a sudden change of heart and gave a warning which was when it started to go terribly wrong.

Sue walked into the church, the temperature inside was an improvement than in the street but it was still cool. There were one or two other people sitting quietly in pews and a curator was busying himself in the far corner with some pamphlets. Sue chose to sit as far away from everyone as possible, everyone that is except Levi, who sat at her feet.
Sue bowed her head and cried, no one else would cry for him she knew with perhaps the exception if his mother, she doubted very much if Charlie would be told that his father had died, maybe Maureen had already told him that three months ago. Several people who walked into the church saw the woman weeping but choose to leave her alone thinking that she needed some private time.
Keeping her head bowed she reached for her handkerchief and blew her nose thinking about Brian, people she came into contact with during their case load died all the time but this was personal, this was someone she had known. Sue sat there and prayed she was thankful that he had been brought into her life so that she could put to rest that bad party and experience she had, forgiving him had brought peace to her heart. She thought about his life how it had been cut short and she blamed herself for not helping him to see their was someone who loved and valued him, God, if only Brian would have given him a chance but now it was too late. With her head in her hands she sat there praying for forgiveness and peace hoping that the remainder of the team were safely back in the bullpen.

Myles, Bobby and D walked into the bullpen, moments later Jack strode in with Dewberry on his shoulder and sat down heavily at his desk and looked around.
“Where’s Sue?” he asked Lucy and Tara
Lucy and Tara shared a look.

“About what?” D said
“Brian Lockyear” supplied Tara “He had been …admitted is not the right word”
“There was a 911 call for the benefit of Brian, who tried to kill himself” Lucy said
“Did he succeed?” asked Bobby
“Yes, well I mean he wasn’t dead when they brought him in but he died in the trauma room”
“Where’s Sue now?” Jack asked
“She wanted some time alone, she went to the church between here and the apartment, said she’d meet me there later” Lucy told him as he nodded
Jack stood “I might go and see if she’s okay”
“Jack she wanted to be alone” Lucy insisted
“Sometimes you think you want to be alone but what you really need is a friend” he replied grabbing his coat “I’ll see you all tomorrow”
“Is he okay?” asked Lucy
“He had a close call” Myles told them
“How close?” she added
“Too close” replied D “It’s been a long day why don’t we all go home and come back refreshed in the morning, it’s late”
And Myles, Bobby, Tara and Lucy agreed.

Jack walked into the church and immediately felt its calm presence wash over him as he searched for Sue. He saw her hunched over totally alone far from anyone else and approached her slowly. Levi sensing him looked up recognising Jack and Dewberry he settled down again. Jack sat on the pew alongside Sue and waited sending up a silent prayer to heaven that he didn’t get the bullet meant for him.
Today only highlighted what he already knew, life was short and unpredictable, you never knew when your time on earth was done, today obviously hadn’t been his and he was grateful that he could see Sue, touch her, talk with her maybe even tell her how it was, that what he felt for her was forever.
Ten minutes had passed and Sue hadn’t moved or given him any indication that she was aware that he was there and Jack placed a hand on her shoulder and rubbed it gently, Sue half turned and looked at him through the curtain of her hair and he moved his hand to hoop some of her hair over his finger. Her eyes were red and puffy as she studied him.
“What’s happened Jack?” she asked knowing something was wrong he had a strange expression haunting his eyes
“I….”
“Didn’t you get them?”
“Oh we got them, but they nearly got me” he told her suddenly reaching for her needing her as much as she needed him and they rocked gently on the pew together each drawing strength from the other.

A long time later they pulled apart and Jack said “I’ll walk you home Lucy will be getting worried” and she nodded in agreement and wiping her eyes she smiled at him.

Dewberry created a zigzag of golden sparkles that would have put an organised firework display to shame had it been visible to the human eye and a closed down, boarded up shop transformed into an olde worlde type store with dark green paintwork, called Wishes and Dreams, selling a multitude of wares for every occasion just before Jack and Sue rounded the corner.
“I haven’t seen this place before” commented Jack peering into the window to see an old man behind the counter with white hair and beard giving him the impression of Santa Claus.
“Shall we go in?” Sue asked intrigued and Jack nodded.
It was magical inside and they both displayed an expression of wonderment on their faces as it brought back memories of childhood and happy dreams and the shop keeper smiled.
“Can I help you?” he asked with a twinkle in his merry blue eyes.
“We just saw your shop, we hadn’t noticed it before” Jack explained
“It’s always here if you search for it” the old man replied “See anything you like?”
At that moment Jack had the strangest urge to say ‘Sue’ but instead he uttered “there’s some really unusual gift ideas in here”
Sue added “I wish I’d known about this store before, my nieces and nephews would have loved to receive some of the hand crafted toys you have for sale”
“Take your time” the shop keeper said “Browse and let me know if you’d like anything you see”
Again Jack had an overwhelming need to say that he needed Sue and he thought it quite bizarre. It was although his fear and concerns of telling Sue how he felt about her had vanished. Sue could hardly keep her eyes off Jack as she trawled through the shelves feeling for some reason the need to buy something from this quaint, unique store.
They spotted the tree ornament together. It was carved from wood with esquite detail and displayed a nativity scene within a snowflake. Sue paid for the ornament and they started to head out of the shop when the man called them back.
“Mistletoe” he simply said and they both looked up and not surprisingly above their heads was a berry filled sprig. “You can’t leave my shop until you kiss under it” and he pointed to a sign on the wall and sure enough it read ‘Please kiss under the mistletoe’.
Jack puzzled pinched himself to make sure he wasn’t dreaming because it sure felt like he was then decided anything to humour the old man.
Sue and Jack stood face to face in the doorway of the shop with Levi sitting at their heels and Dewberry on a shelf above Jack’s head. Jack couldn’t help it but he was mesmerized by her eyes as he slowly captivated one side of her face with the palm of his hand, softly stroking her cheek with his thumb. Jack moved forward to kiss Sue but pulled away almost waiting for her eyes to give him the nod of approval and when he had it he moved back in. Gently Jack brushed his lips feather like over Sue’s sending tremors through his body and kindling the flame which flickered in hers. Jack heard Sue catch her breath as his other hand came up and he cradled her face with his hands as his lips sought possession of hers. Sue let go of Levi’s leash as Jack’s lips roamed over hers sending sensations through her body of which she supposed must be desire. No one had ever kissed her in this way or made her feel like Jack was making her feel right now as her hands crept up his chest one weaving it’s way higher to the back of his neck to bring him closer still.
And Dewberry shared a look of satisfaction with the man behind the counter being that they knew each other well and knowing that with these two extra super power magic was required to get them to admit to their feelings. Dewberry knew today had been a turning point.

It had been a week since the kiss and Sue’s head was still buzzing from the after effects of it, that and the fact that no one except herself and Jack knew about it. He had walked her home almost as if it hadn’t happened save that he held the corner of her elbow for the remainder of the journey.
At her front door she had invited him in but he had declined saying he was tired and he needed some sleep. She had unexpectedly planted a kiss upon his cheek as she thanked him for finding her in the church and he had told her that the pleasure was all his.
At work they worked hard on their other 3 important cases cracking two in the days that followed. Christmas was almost upon them, the Christmas party was tomorrow night.

Dewberry fully aware of the party had to get everything just right, her mission technically could go on to Christmas Eve but it was more appropriate to wrap it up at the party.

Jack couldn’t concentrate all he could think about was Sue, well actually kissing Sue in the doorway of the quaint shop last week. The day he had promised to say something to her about the way he felt, but so far he hadn’t, things were hectic and an opportunity just hadn’t arisen. He didn’t want another year to pass by without telling her how it was. Next time he might not be so lucky next time the bullet might meet its target. He was still perturbed about how that bullet missed him, it must have been Christmas magic he mused then laughed at himself for being so foolish not knowing how close to the truth he actually was.

Jack needed to speak privately to Lucy and he caught up with her in the corridor.
“Lucy” he called and she turned round
“Can I have a quiet word with you?”
“Sure” Lucy answered wondering what this was all about Jack was looking extremely uneasy.
“It about tomorrow night” he said
“The Christmas party” Lucy replied
“Yes” confirmed Jack beginning to look awkward as he struggled to find the right words “I …..er…I guess you’ll be arriving with Sue”
“Yes” she said slowly questioning him with her expression
“Well I wondered whether you could maybe change your plans”
“What?”
“I don’t mean not go to the party I mean not go with Sue to the party”
“Jack, are you feeling okay?” Lucy asked worried
“I’m feeling fine Lucy. Look this is difficult, but Sue told me something about something that happened when …a long time ago and I would like to show her that it can be different, so I’ve been thinking that maybe I should take her to the party”
“As in a date?” asked Lucy hopefully but not expecting him to say yes
“Kind of” he said with a shrug
“You’ve spoken with Sue about this?”
“No, which is why I’m talking to you now, I thought perhaps you could come up with something and say you’ll meet her there, at the party and then I’ll offer to take her”
Lucy nodded she would do anything to help them get together. “Okay, you’re on”
“Thanks I owe you”
“Tell you what if you and Sue have a great time we’ll call it even” Lucy told him trying not to grin too much at this turn of events.
“Thank you Lucy” said Jack gratefully.

Dewberry smiled softly to herself yes her mission was well and truly almost complete.

Sue stood looking at her reflection in the full length mirror wondering if buying her new dress had been somewhat extravagant it was full length and a dark red with intricate detail down the right side of black stitching and beads in the form of flowers.
Suddenly she felt nervous although why she didn’t quite know it was only Jack picking her up, it wasn’t a date as such they were work colleagues however since that mind blowing kiss last week she didn’t think that she would ever see him as anything but the man she loved. Lucy had announced this morning at work that she had to stop off and see her grandmother Alice and it would be better if they arrived at the party under their own steam then Jack had stepped in and said he would give her a ride and after a bit of persuasion from Lucy and Jack she had agreed.
Levi alerted Sue to the arrival of Jack and when she opened the door he stood on the threshold in his tux under his overcoat and she swallowed hard and smiled at him.
“I’ll just grab my coat” she said needing to do something other than stare at him.
Jack stood there transfixed, new dress he thought, great new dress. He watched as she grabbed her coat, purse and Levi.
“Ready?” she signed when she got no response she said “Jack?”
“What?” he said catching a stray tendril of her hair and twisted it around his finger with his remaining fingers brushing the side of her face and she gasped.
Sue wished he would kiss her right then like he did last week it was a pity there wasn’t any mistletoe then she could have made a kind of joke about it, as if sensing this Jack softly placed a kiss on her cheek where his fingers has been.
“You look beautiful” he whispered and she could see what she thought were flecks of desire in his eyes, maybe the dress had been a good idea after all.

Dewberry’s head was spinning when they arrived and she was glad of some fresh air to clear it, being in a confined space with Sue and Jack made the electric current on overload and just as she realised how to deal with it she knew that as her mission was almost over she wouldn’t have to ride with them anymore anyway, hopefully from tonight they would be able to figure it out by themselves.

They arrived a little later than the rest of the team who were sitting at their table waiting for the meal to begin which looked as if it was imminent.
“Problems?” asked D with a grin at Donna who kicked him under the table
“No” said Jack choosing to ignore it
“You’re cutting it a bit fine” added Bobby
“We’re here just in time aren’t we?” Jack said
“Don’t take any notice of them” Lucy said “It’s not about who arrives first it’s about having a good night out together”
“Yeah” Tara agreed catching Lucy's eye then looking at Jack and Sue. Jack appeared nonchalant while Sue couldn’t help but blush slightly and the girls wondered if they had missed any interesting developments between their friends.

Dewberry perched herself on the table decoration so that she had a good view of everything.

The band started playing after the meal finished and D led Donna up to the dance floor while Bobby and Tara followed suit. Jack sat there thinking that he should ask Sue when Myles beat him to it and with a backwards glance at Jack, Sue let Myles lead her around the floor.
Lucy moved round the table and sat next to Jack.
“What are you doing?” she asked
“Nothing” he replied
“Exactly, what I thought. I thought you were going to make a move tonight”
“What?”
“With Sue” Lucy patiently clarified “I thought that was the reason you wanted to pick her up instead of meeting her here”
“She’s just dancing with Myles”
“I can see that, she should be dancing with you”
“Oh Lucy don’t nag me I’m trying”
“Humph” she replied thinking that he was trying in more ways than one and Dewberry watching them heartily agreed.

By the time Sue sat down only Jack was sitting at the table she took a drink put her glass down and smiled at him.
“It’s hot in here” she commented
“It’s all the dancing you’ve been doing” he said with a smile.
“I might get some air” she said
Knowing it was now or never he replied “Can I join you?”
Sue held her arm out to him in reply and they wandered off together no one except Dewberry and Levi saw them leave and then Dewberry had to follow leaving Levi all forlorn by himself.
They found a deserted balcony off the long corridor illuminated by the light flowing from the hallway. Sue immediately cold, rubbed her arms with her hands and Jack took the initiative to take her in his arms, it seemed natural for Sue to wrap her around his body.
Jack took a step backwards with Sue in his arms and slipped on the untreated icy terrace almost pulling her on top of him.
Sue found the incident decidedly amusing much to Jack’s disgust as he stood up and brushed himself off.
“Okay you” she eventually signed still giggling
“I expect I’ll survive” he replied with a grin, seeing her shiver he reached for her once more and suddenly they both became serious.
“Jack” Sue said tentatively

Sue blinked back the tears forming at the corner of her eyes, she couldn’t believe it this was the Christmas gift she had wished for she hadn’t imagined it would actually come true.

He couldn’t help himself as he captured her lips with his once more and she responded like he always imagined she would. Dewberry sat on the balustrade taking one last fond glance at the pair.
“Mission accomplished” she said into her control unit and was immediately zapped back to the North Pole.
Lucy, Donna and Tara were on a mission. The team had not seen Sue or Jack for some time and while D, Bobby and Myles all thought that they would eventually materialise as Levi had been left at the table alone, the girls decided to investigate.
They parted the half drawn curtains to see the pair still locked in each other embrace and smiled in satisfaction at each other as they allowed the curtain to fall back once more hiding Jack and Sue from sight.
“Mission accomplished” said Tara
And Lucy added “Case closed”
“I think though” put in Donna “that the case is in fact only just beginning”

It had been a week since the kiss and Sue’s head was still buzzing from the after effects of it, that and the fact that no one except herself and Jack knew about it. He had walked her home almost as if it hadn’t happened save that he held the corner of her elbow for the remainder of the journey.
At her front door she had invited him in but he had declined saying he was tired and he needed some sleep. She had unexpectedly planted a kiss upon his cheek as she thanked him for finding her in the church and he had told her that the pleasure was all his.
At work they worked hard on their other 3 important cases cracking two in the days that followed. Christmas was almost upon them, the Christmas party was tomorrow night.

Dewberry fully aware of the party had to get everything just right, her mission technically could go on to Christmas Eve but it was more appropriate to wrap it up at the party.

Jack couldn’t concentrate all he could think about was Sue, well actually kissing Sue in the doorway of the quaint shop last week. The day he had promised to say something to her about the way he felt, but so far he hadn’t, things were hectic and an opportunity just hadn’t arisen. He didn’t want another year to pass by without telling her how it was. Next time he might not be so lucky next time the bullet might meet its target. He was still perturbed about how that bullet missed him, it must have been Christmas magic he mused then laughed at himself for being so foolish not knowing how close to the truth he actually was.

Jack needed to speak privately to Lucy and he caught up with her in the corridor.
“Lucy” he called and she turned round
“Can I have a quiet word with you?”
“Sure” Lucy answered wondering what this was all about Jack was looking extremely uneasy.
“It about tomorrow night” he said
“The Christmas party” Lucy replied
“Yes” confirmed Jack beginning to look awkward as he struggled to find the right words “I …..er…I guess you’ll be arriving with Sue”
“Yes” she said slowly questioning him with her expression
“Well I wondered whether you could maybe change your plans”
“What?”
“I don’t mean not go to the party I mean not go with Sue to the party”
“Jack, are you feeling okay?” Lucy asked worried
“I’m feeling fine Lucy. Look this is difficult, but Sue told me something about something that happened when …a long time ago and I would like to show her that it can be different, so I’ve been thinking that maybe I should take her to the party”
“As in a date?” asked Lucy hopefully but not expecting him to say yes
“Kind of” he said with a shrug
“You’ve spoken with Sue about this?”
“No, which is why I’m talking to you now, I thought perhaps you could come up with something and say you’ll meet her there, at the party and then I’ll offer to take her”
Lucy nodded she would do anything to help them get together. “Okay, you’re on”
“Thanks I owe you”
“Tell you what if you and Sue have a great time we’ll call it even” Lucy told him trying not to grin too much at this turn of events.
“Thank you Lucy” said Jack gratefully.

Dewberry smiled softly to herself yes her mission was well and truly almost complete.

Sue stood looking at her reflection in the full length mirror wondering if buying her new dress had been somewhat extravagant it was full length and a dark red with intricate detail down the right side of black stitching and beads in the form of flowers.
Suddenly she felt nervous although why she didn’t quite know it was only Jack picking her up, it wasn’t a date as such they were work colleagues however since that mind blowing kiss last week she didn’t think that she would ever see him as anything but the man she loved. Lucy had announced this morning at work that she had to stop off and see her grandmother Alice and it would be better if they arrived at the party under their own steam then Jack had stepped in and said he would give her a ride and after a bit of persuasion from Lucy and Jack she had agreed.
Levi alerted Sue to the arrival of Jack and when she opened the door he stood on the threshold in his tux under his overcoat and she swallowed hard and smiled at him.
“I’ll just grab my coat” she said needing to do something other than stare at him.
Jack stood there transfixed, new dress he thought, great new dress. He watched as she grabbed her coat, purse and Levi.
“Ready?” she signed when she got no response she said “Jack?”
“What?” he said catching a stray tendril of her hair and twisted it around his finger with his remaining fingers brushing the side of her face and she gasped.
Sue wished he would kiss her right then like he did last week it was a pity there wasn’t any mistletoe then she could have made a kind of joke about it, as if sensing this Jack softly placed a kiss on her cheek where his fingers has been.
“You look beautiful” he whispered and she could see what she thought were flecks of desire in his eyes, maybe the dress had been a good idea after all.

Dewberry’s head was spinning when they arrived and she was glad of some fresh air to clear it, being in a confined space with Sue and Jack made the electric current on overload and just as she realised how to deal with it she knew that as her mission was almost over she wouldn’t have to ride with them anymore anyway, hopefully from tonight they would be able to figure it out by themselves.

They arrived a little later than the rest of the team who were sitting at their table waiting for the meal to begin which looked as if it was imminent.
“Problems?” asked D with a grin at Donna who kicked him under the table
“No” said Jack choosing to ignore it
“You’re cutting it a bit fine” added Bobby
“We’re here just in time aren’t we?” Jack said
“Don’t take any notice of them” Lucy said “It’s not about who arrives first it’s about having a good night out together”
“Yeah” Tara agreed catching Lucy's eye then looking at Jack and Sue. Jack appeared nonchalant while Sue couldn’t help but blush slightly and the girls wondered if they had missed any interesting developments between their friends.

Dewberry perched herself on the table decoration so that she had a good view of everything.

The band started playing after the meal finished and D led Donna up to the dance floor while Bobby and Tara followed suit. Jack sat there thinking that he should ask Sue when Myles beat him to it and with a backwards glance at Jack, Sue let Myles lead her around the floor.
Lucy moved round the table and sat next to Jack.
“What are you doing?” she asked
“Nothing” he replied
“Exactly, what I thought. I thought you were going to make a move tonight”
“What?”
“With Sue” Lucy patiently clarified “I thought that was the reason you wanted to pick her up instead of meeting her here”
“She’s just dancing with Myles”
“I can see that, she should be dancing with you”
“Oh Lucy don’t nag me I’m trying”
“Humph” she replied thinking that he was trying in more ways than one and Dewberry watching them heartily agreed.

By the time Sue sat down only Jack was sitting at the table she took a drink put her glass down and smiled at him.
“It’s hot in here” she commented
“It’s all the dancing you’ve been doing” he said with a smile.
“I might get some air” she said
Knowing it was now or never he replied “Can I join you?”
Sue held her arm out to him in reply and they wandered off together no one except Dewberry and Levi saw them leave and then Dewberry had to follow leaving Levi all forlorn by himself.
They found a deserted balcony off the long corridor illuminated by the light flowing from the hallway. Sue immediately cold, rubbed her arms with her hands and Jack took the initiative to take her in his arms, it seemed natural for Sue to wrap her around his body.
Jack took a step backwards with Sue in his arms and slipped on the untreated icy terrace almost pulling her on top of him.
Sue found the incident decidedly amusing much to Jack’s disgust as he stood up and brushed himself off.
“Okay you” she eventually signed still giggling
“I expect I’ll survive” he replied with a grin, seeing her shiver he reached for her once more and suddenly they both became serious.
