Chapter one

Myles Leland III scorned the season and its festivities; the forced good cheer, the garish decorations and the ridiculous extravagance that mired his fellow workers. He would not be sorry if Tara’s cd player met an untimely end or if Lucy stopped hanging mistletoe from one end of the bullpen to the other in hopes of catching Jack and Sue unawares. He would not regret the day that Bobby took his Pin the Antlers on Rudolph poster off the common wall by their desks or when the nativity scene that Sue had arranged by the coffee pot could finally be packed away. And he definitely wouldn’t miss the outlandish Christmas sweaters Jack had taken to coming into work in – all hand knitted by his mother. Everyone was of good cheer – except himself. Bah! Humbug! Scrooge had it right….

“Excuse me sir, you’re standing on my wing.” A melodic voice intruded on his morose musings. Myles looked around in surprise. An angel stood at his side, waiting, as he was, for the light to change and he was indeed standing on the tip of one finely feathered wing.

“You should be more careful,” he complained gruffly before shifting his heel to release the wing.

The angel frowned. “I should be more careful?” she echoed. “You were the one standing on my wing.”

“It was dragging on the concrete, where feet not wings belong,” Myles retorted rudely.

“So you think that gives you license to traipse all over it?” the angel glared at him furiously.

“Not very angelic are you?” Myles smirked; wondering at the length of time the light managed to stay red. He wanted to get away from lunatics who wore angel costumes in the middle of downtown DC.

“I’ll have you know that I’m a sight more angelic than you are,” huffed the angel defensively, “and I just earned my wings. I’m not used to them yet. Besides, they gave me the wrong size. They’re too long.”

“I imagine they just make a standard size, not taking into consideration a person’s height…” Myles mumbled, wishing fervently for the light to change.

“Angel, not person. Angels wear wings. Which brings me to the point. Myles Leland III I am an angel sent by God to…”

Myles gazed at the ‘angel’ in astonishment. One eyebrow raised, and then two, before he tossed back his head and howled. And the light still didn’t change.

“That wasn’t the reaction I was expecting…” grumbled the angel.

“How did you think I would take that announcement?” Myles asked scornfully.

“With reverence, a certain awe, I wouldn’t have minded if you’d fallen prostrate on the ground like the shepherds did. Those were the good old days…” The angel was clearly miffed.

“Who put you up to this?” Myles demanded.

“Pardon me?”

“Come one – was it Manning? This would be his style. Hudson? He’d be in cahoots with somebody. Lucy still trying to get me back for…well never mind that. Or Thomas, I bet it was Thomas. You have to watch those quiet ones. Whoever it was, just tell them we had a hardy laugh and get lost.” Myles pushed the walk button repeatedly trying to get the light to change.

“You know pressing that button a hundred times isn’t going to do any good. You’re just going to wear it out. The lights are programmed by a computer and…”

“Okay it was Tara – you sound geekish enough to be a cronie of hers.”

“You really are a rude, belligerent man,” the angel rebuked, her wing feathers clearly ruffled. “Well, that’s why I’m here. To turn your heart. It has come to my attention through the Department of Divine Powers, that you are at a crossroads in your life and frankly, you’re heading down the wrong road. Hence God has sent me to tell you…”

“Silence! We may have to stand at this infernally slow red light together but we do not need to converse,” Myles said rudely.

“I don’t believe you understand what you’re saying or who you’re saying it too…I have powers…”

Myles flashed his creds, “Yeah, well so do I, and unless you want to spend the night enjoying the fine hospitality of an FBI holding cell, I suggest you shut up!”

“Excuse me? Excuse me!” the angel levitated in her anger. Myles frowned noticing her rise to his eye level. What kind of trick was this?

“It isn’t a trick, you cretin, it’s a God given talented. It comes with the wings. And yes I can read your mind, pull out your thoughts – disgusting as they might be. Why the Department picked you out as worthy of Divine Intervention, I will never know, but here we are destined to work together for the good of mankind this Christmas season. So get with the program, buster and listen up.”

Myles turned his back and walked away. He would cross over to the Hoover Building down the block. The extra walk in the biting wind would be worth it to get away from that lunatic.

“Okay – no more gentle persuasion here. I’m pulling out the big guns,” the angel warned as a mighty wind picked up and pushed Myles backwards, pinning him to a lamppost. Myles had the presence of mind to reach for his gun.

“I am armed and…” he started to say, only to have the gun whisked from his fingers by some unseen force.

“You dare to draw a gun on an angel?” She was in a royal snit now. “Hello – you do know you can’t kill us, right? What a waste of time. And you with a Harvard education! Listen, mister, you might not like it any more than I do, but we’re stuck together with this assignment and you can either make it easy on yourself or harder. Either way, you don’t say no to God, got that?”

“You are delusional; probably psychotic and definitely an escapee from a lunatic asylum, if they have such things any more. And they should with people like you roaming the streets…” Myles said trying to struggle against the restraining wind. Why wasn’t anyone coming to his aid? There were bound to be agents out on their lunch breaks.

“No one is going to help you because no one can see us. Part of the powers invested in me by the Department. Now, as I was saying, we have an assignment. You need to sort your life out…and in the process help your friends and associates see the true meaning of Christmas. You do that, and I’ll get a promotion and you’ll go down the right road and much happier trust me. So…”

“Trust you – a violent angel? More like a Viking – running rampant through the streets, accosting innocent people…”

“Innocent is hardly an adjective I’d use to describe you Leland,” the angel scorned unangelically. “You know, you’re really annoying me. And when I get annoyed I end up doing crazy things. It’s my worse fault.”

“Is that a threat? Again totally angelic. Which side were you on again? I ‘m having a difficult time figuring that out based on your actions…” Myles felt a whoosh shoot through his body, he felt his insides churning and twisting as he spiraled downwards and landed on all fours. “Arf?”

“Much better,” the angel sighed in satisfaction. “I told you it could be easy or hard, depending on you. Guess you just chose the hard path. Here’s the deal. You want to return to your human form? Well, there’s only one way to do that. Change the tides of Christmas. Make a difference, give a gift beyond monetary value. Find the true meaning behind the glitz and I might just turn you back. Go on now – off you go. Oh and I’ll stop by periodically to check up on your progress,” the angel added, looking down at the furiously barking little dog. “Don’t even think about biting me. I’ll give you a shock,”

Myles ignored her warning and sank his teeth into an ankle. Electricity shot through his body, and frizzed his fur. Yelping he let go and watched her vanish, leaving him suddenly dodging the large and dangerous feet of people hurrying by. He scurried out the way and huddled in the entranceway of a deli. The aromas coming from the place seemed to more pungent -- much more interesting from down here. He pressed his nose against the glass and let out a yelp of surprise as he saw his reflection for the first time. That witch of an angel had turned him into a Dandie Dinmont Terrier!

Myles scurried through the crowed streets of DC, his mind on automatic pilot. He didn't know where he was going, but his little doggy sense was working in overdrive, so he trusted it, dodging people and traffic left and right. He nearly got hit by a car more than once as he crossed streets, before he figured out the best way to get across safely was to wait and go with the humans.

The little dog that to everyone else was just another stray kept on,determined to get where ever he was going. The scents tortured Myles, the lingering aroma of freshly baked Christmas goodies descending to his level. He almost stopped to steal away one little cookie or even a piece of nut bread to satisfy his grumbling little tummy, but was chased away before he even got close. That baker had lost one too many treats snatched away by a dog lately and was in a very bad temper. he would just have to wait until he could find a baker with more holiday cheer and a big heart.

Along the way-whatever way it was-Myles thought about the angel that might have just ruined his entire week. 'I was going to read that new novel I bought' He moaned to himself. 'Wait, what am I thinking??? Stopping in the middle of the sidewalk was a mistake, even if he had just come to his senses."yip!" Speeding up his pace so as not to get his tail stepped on again, Myles thought furiously to himself. 'This can't be happening! Way too abnormal. It has to be a dream-no-nightmare!' His mind made up he just kept going along his route knowing that this was all in his head and soon he would be waking up in his nice warm bed.

Suddenly looming before him was a building that he was used to seeing, although not quite so big. The Hoover building was yards away, yet he couldn't reach it. Waiting patiently on the corner, Myles got the overwhelming urge to scratch behind his furry ears. 'no!' he thought whining out loud. 'Lelands never get fleas!' Then, realizing what he had just thought, laid down and covered his head with his paws waiting for this outrageous nightmare to end. He was startled to discover, after several minutes, he had not woken up, but was in fact being nudged by a much larger dog!

Chapter two

"Hey there little dog, it's ok, he won't hurt you." The owner of the dog spoke softly as Myles crept back, away from the other dog. Looking up he saw..."sue?" Sure enough Sue Thomas and Levi were crouching in front of Myles waiting for his reaction. He stood up and looked at the two, wondering how on earth he was supposed to tell Sue that some not-so-angelic angel had turned him into a little fur-ball. As he was pondering this he was shocked to hear another voice speak up "How do you know my mistress?" Myles looked at Levi, cocking his head to one side. "Did you just talk?" He asked the golden retriever. "Yes, so did you. Now answer my question." Levi backed up and stood in front of Sue in case he needed to protect her from this little dog, although he smelled familiar. "Levi, thank goodness you can talk!" Myles shouted "It's me! Myles!"

Sue smiled as she watched the exchange between the two dogs "So, Levi," she asked."Is this a friend of yours? Aren't you going to introduce me?" She reached out her hand to pet him. Levi moved closer to Myles and sniffed him in the doggy way, much to Myles' horror. "Well, you smell like Myles." He said. "But what happened? You're looking much better today" Levi laughed in a way, that, had it been human would have sounded much like Bobby. "But seriously. What on earth happened?" Levi sat back waiting for an answer. "I'll tell you later." Myles grumbled, not wanting to think about it. "Can you just get me inside? It's freezing out here!" Levi looked at him finally convinced it was Myles. Dogs weren't usually this crabby, no matter how cold they were. "That's up to my mistress." He answered, looking at Sue who was looking for any ID.

"Well, you don't have any tags." Sue said, after looking Myles over. "I suppose we better take him to work, huh Levi?" Levi barked in response and said to Myles, "you're lucky my mistress is so nice, or you'd be going to the pound. And trust me, you don't want to go there." He could remember his own experience of the pound, from before Sue had gotten him, and it hadn't been a pleasant one.

As the three got up Sue scooped up Myles before he could protest. "you're lucky I keep an extra leash for Levi in my purse or I doubt they'd let me bring you in." Sue said snapping on a leash on, making a collar by looping it around Myles' neck. "Well they let him in before!" Levi said, laughing again. Myles just looked down at Levi as they crossed the street and made a face as close to frowning as possible.

Looking up again he saw Jack standing away from the doors looking around, as if waiting for some one. As they neared the building, Jack spotted Sue and smiled and started walking towards the door acting like he was just getting there himself. They got to the door almost at the same time, but Jack was a little quicker.

"Thank you Jack." Sue said as he held the door open for her and Levi, then followed after. "No problem," he answered. "I guess I must have perfect timing." Myles looked at Jack and started yipping. "What are you talking about? You were waiting for her! Is she blind too?" He would have continued his rant, but was interrupted by Levi telling him to be quiet and Jack noticing him for the first time. "who's this little fellow?" He asked Sue "I don't know." Sue said as Jack petted Myles. "I found him laying down on the corner outside just now. He isn't that friendly." She added as Myles growled. They had reached the elevators now, and got inside an empty one.

As the doors closed Myles noticed that the music playing was even worse then the usual tunes. "Ahhhh! Why must EVERYONE play Christmas music?" Myles groaned. Levi told him to be quiet again. "Shhh... they don't get to talk alone that much." he said quietly. "You humans always interrupt things. Even Lucy, and she wants them to get together!" Myles couldn't believe it, the dog was like a combination of everyone in the office, first Bobby, now Lucy...he could only hope that Levi would not start acting like Tara. He shuddered at the thought.

As they stepped off the elevator they were met by Demetrius. "There you two are, I was just about to come looking for you." He said, turning around when they reached him and walking with them towards the bullpen. "we've got a new case, and we need Levi."

Chapter 3

Sue looked at Jack to make sure she had heard Demetrius right. Jack shrugged at her as they continued towards the bullpen. Myles wondered why on earth they would need Levi for a case. They had dogs trained for every type of job the FBI could need. He looked at the dog trotting faithfully alongside of his owner, and wondered if anyone would ever care for him as much as Levi did for Sue. Levi chose to look up at that moment and caught Myles staring at him. "what are you looking at?" He asked. "Nothing." Myles replied quickly. "I was just wondering what they would need you for with all those dogs they have already." Levi did something that Myles could only guess was an imitation of the shrug Jack had given to Sue.

Arriving in the bullpen Myles was not surprised to find Lucy on a stool, hanging up mistletoe in a few key places...places like next to Sue's desk, in front of the coffee machine where everyone gathered on uneventful mornings to catch the latest gossip or talk about last night's basketball game, and near the coat tree. Sue rolled her eyes as soon as she saw the one near her desk and was headed to take it down, but Demetrius got her attention before she could get the stool away from Lucy. She asked Lucy to watch the little dog for her, promising to give her an explanation later. As she set him down he looked around the room taking in a new perspective. He wasn't surprised to find his desk empty, and wondered how that would be explained to his coworkers. Next to his desk was Jack's and, as Myles had predicted, he was staring at Sue. 'I wonder why I've never noticed that before." He mused as he glanced past Tara's desk-glued to her computer as usual- and Bobby's, where the Aussie was eating some junk food. Myles sighed and started to settle down, but the sight of Levi headed his was with a goofy grin on his face set him scurrying for cover.

"Hi," Sue said as she approached his desk. "Did I read your lips right? You need Levi for the next case?" He chuckled as her confused expression, and what his wife would call 'a wrinkled beak',an expression used for their kids' noses when they were confused or didn't like the smell of dinner. "Yes, nothing really hard. In fact, " he continued, raising his voice to get every-body's attention. "Everyone gather 'round. Our new case is a small one, but we're not quite so busy right now-" Bobby cut him off after swallowing the rest of his donut. "I guess we're just too good for the bad guys, eh?" He quipped flashing his killer smile that always won the ladies over. Demetrius shot him a look that he used on his kids almost as often as he used it on Bobby. "Yes, thank you. Now as I was saying we don't have much going on right now, so we're taking a case that we wouldn't take normally. Giving the Police a Christmas break." He explained. "Anna O' Connor runs a training facility for dogs, and has reported that several of her dogs have disappeared right before the new owner picks them up." Demetrius was interrupted by Lucy exclaiming something over by the doorway. Everyone turned to see what the matter was. Myles also crawled out from under Lucy's desk where he had been hiding from Levi's awful jokes that he was sure had been picked up from Bobby. Peeking around the corner he was shocked to see himself in an argument with Lucy!

Chapter 4

"Myles, you're burning up!" Myles the dog heard Lucy tell his Human self. "I am perfectly healthy," Myles retorted loudly. "I've never had a sick day in my life!." Lucy raised an eyebrow at the flushed looking man. "Well, you're about to. I don't want to get sick right before Christmas!" Myles started to complain more, but was cut off by D. "Myles, we're only doing a small case today. You've earned the rest, and Lucy is right, you don't look so great." Myles grumbled a little more before finally consenting, and leaving again.

Demetrius continued where they had left off. "Anna thinks her dogs are being stolen by her dogs' rivals from the dog competition she judges for." He walked over to the bulletin board and pinned up a picture of a man and a woman with their names underneath. "Zac and Liz Necco. A husband and wife duo who feel that their dogs have been overlooked in favor of the dogs that Anna has trained."

D sat on the corner of his desk and looked at Sue. "This is were Levi comes in. Anna had a couple scheduled to come in and look at a few dogs today, a newly-wed couple looking for a calm, and mature dog that could help the wife out..it was for keeping her company, but I think she just might happen to be deaf." He hinted, drawing out the last few words. Sue looked at Levi and back at D thinking hard. There was something missing here. She could figure out what he wanted- Levi would be the dog, and she would be the newly-wed wife. "Okay," she answered. "But one problem. I'm not married."

"I think I know how we can solve that." Bobby said grinning. "I have a feeling that you, sheila, will be making a trip to the Rev. Bobby, along with your handsome hubby-to-be, Jack Hudson!" Jack shot Bobby a look before everyone turned to look at him. "Well, Jack?" Lucy asked, coming over after hearing Bobby's idea. "aren't you going to propose?" Jack and Sue, both flustered, looked at the ground, the wall, anywhere but at each-other.

Sue surprised them all-including her-self- by speaking up. "Well, if he won't do it, I guess I'll have to." Now all eyes were on her. "Jack, will you marry me for a couple of hours?" Lucy and Bobby broke out their trademark grins and D chuckled to himself. "Well,I suppose..." Jack trailed off after several seconds, just as Lucy was about to say yes for him. "But I don't have a ring." D assured him that they would think of something before they headed out. "I told Anna we would be there in about an hour." D said. "I think I'll have some one sneak Levi in ahead of time, so Sue, Where is he?"

Sue looked over to where the dog had last been laying down, and gasped. "He's gone! And so is the other dog!"

Chapter 5

"Myles! Wait up! " Myles glanced over his shoulder to see Levi following him out the door, and hurried his pace after the Myles that he was almost certain was that devilish angel in disguise. 'Oh, great, now I'll have that song stuck in my head all day. ' Myles grumbled to himself. Levi had now caught up to him as he hurried through the deserted hallways. He guessed everyone had the same problem as his team and had gone home early. "Where are you going? " Levi demanded to know. "You could get in trouble out here without a human"

Myles was about to respond as they turned the corner, but bumped into some-one before he could reply. Looking up he was not shocked to see the angel once more in angel form. "Well?" She asked. "made any progress yet?" Levi stared at the beautiful sight before him in silence, for if you aren't mad at one, an angel is a truly amazing sight to see. "No." Myles said shortly. The angel looked down at him and frowned. "Do you mean that you don't plan to do anything to improve yourself? Hmm...how about this? If you haven't done anything by the end of today, you will be stuck in this form forever!" And with that she disappeared in a flash of light.

"Levi?" The dogs could hear Sue calling, as she got close to them. "there you are, boy, don't scare me like that!" Sue put Levi's leash on him, and Lucy who had felt awful about letting the little dog get away scooped him up. "You know Sue," Lucy said as they walked back to the bullpen. " I don't know why, but this Little guy reminds me of Myles." Sue laughed and gave the little dog a pat on the head. "why don't you call him that?" She suggested. "He doesn't have a name and I'm sure Myles would be flattered." The girls laughed as the imagined what Myles' reaction would be to that. "Grrr...they shouldn't go around assuming things like that. " Myles grumbled. As soon as they arrived in the bullpen Bobby took Levi to Anna's shop to get him acquainted with Anna and to check out the area with a surveillance team.

Sue and Lucy went to grab lunch before the 'appointment' Sue had with with her husband. Taking Myles with them they took Lucy's car to a small deli that had just opened a few miles from the dog shop. "I am famished!" Lucy exclaimed as they entered the the aroma filled deli. "and those subs smell and look delicious!" As they stepped up to the counter Myles felt an odd twinge from somewhere in his body. It seemed to be speaking to him from his little doggy senses. 'Oh, now what's wrong with me? ' He wondered, trying to ignore the pangs. But they wouldn't' leave him alone, and he let his instinct take over and jumped from Lucy's arms and raced into the back of the store. "hey!" some-one yelled at him as he raced past shelves of food he would love to sink his teeth into. He could sense Lucy and Sue behind him, and could almost hear them yelling, but he heard something else too. Something telling him to go faster. He raced up the stairs at the back and down a short hallway where a door was open just enough for him to squeeze in. "I'm so sorry." He could hear Sue apologizing on his behalf, and he was struck just how much she cared for others, even if they didn't deserve it. The owner of the deli burst into the room with Sue and Lucy at her heels. "You little troublemaker, you!" The deli owner was about to shake the little dog, but stopped when she gasped as she saw what Myles had been so frantic about. "Alan!" She screamed

chapter 6

Sue walked over to the aid car as Linda watched her husband, Alan, being loaded in. A paramedic was talking to her. "...it's a good thing you found him so fast, otherwise he wouldn't have made it." Linda had tears in her eyes as she turned to Sue and Lucy. "Thank you so much." she said. "and thank you, little dog." She ruffled Myles' fur before the aid car rushed her and her husband off to the hospital.

"Well little guy," Lucy said turning to Myles. "You are turning out to be quite the hero." The girls fussed over him, and Myles had to admit, it felt good. "Oh my gosh!" Sue exclaimed. "Look at the time! We're late!" And with that they rushed off to meet the rest of the team.

At the pet shop Lucy dropped Sue off as Jack had instructed on the phone when he called to find out what was keeping them. As she got out Sue was met by a smiling Jack, who kissed her on the cheek. "Hey sweetie, How was lunch?" Sue looked at him as he guided her into the shop. It was almost empty, except for two workers and a young family looking at dog supplies "Hello, you must be Jack and Sue." She greeted them warmly. Jack nodded and suggested they go look for their new dog. In a low voice he explained that a couple that they believed to be Zac and Liz were sitting in a car across the street.

"If they go along like the other times they will wait until you come inside to sign papers and take the dog from the dog run." Anna whispered to them as she led them outside. They looked at the dogs for a bit and took their time, pretending to have a hard time choosing, but finally picking Levi. "Okay, lets get your papers now." Anna said loud enough for the man and woman just a few yards away to hear. They went inside and no sooner then they had sat down Jack and Anna heard Levi barking. "Sue." Jack motioned for her to stay inside with Anna as he drew his gun.

Anna sat with wide eyes listening for several minutes before sighing. "I think they're calling us out." She said to Sue as Jack came in to get them. Outside the couple were being taken away in a FBI car, and the whole team was standing around. Sue was surprised to see Lucy and Little Myles. "What happened?" Sue asked, and Lucy explained how Myles had jumped out of the car window two blocks away and ran in front of the Necco's car as they were getting away. "well, " Sue said after hearing all this. "Lucy, I think you were wrong. The dog isn't like Myles at all!" As everyone started laughing Myles felt a tug and was surprised to find himself in his car just down the road. In the passenger seat sat the angel. "well, well, well." She said, with a smile on her face. "You have amazed an angel, and that is very hard to do." Myles looked down and blushed in embarrassment, and found he was once again human!

"yes," the angel said laughing. "you're back to normal. But remember. If you ever go down your old path again I think you will find it hard to turn back. And you must do one more thing to prove you won't, and to provide everyone with a happy ending."

Myles walked up to all his co-workers and startled them all half to death, but no one ever knew how much he had scared Levi, who thought Myles was sitting next to him. "Hello all. I was feeling much better and thought I'd see what you were leaving me out of." Everyone was surprised to find he was joking and still more when he offered to treat everyone to dinner.

At the dinner table Myles tapped Sue on the shoulder. "What are you going to do with this handsome little dog, Sue?" Sue looked at him and smiled at this new thoughtful Myles. "I don't think Levi could handle another dog in the house, so I thought I'd let Anna find him a home." What Myles said next shocked everyone more than anything he had ever done. "I think, if it's okay with you, I'd like to keep him."

After the commotion had died down Myles glanced out the window and saw, for the last time, a beautiful angel smiling at him and letting him know that he had earned her admiration and respect, and most important, a new life full of possibilities.
