I'm so glad the baby is warming up! Hopefully, Jack will be able to find something to feed the baby. Surely there's milk in the cafeteria, but how will they warm it and get it into the baby??

Jack and Sue are adorable when they're both flustered!!

Marlo, I'm so glad this isn't a short story! I loved your short story, but I like your long ones best!!

Jill and Flip - now look what's you've done! Marlo is perking up at the "shadowy figure"!!

Now guys, wishing me a snowy day backfired. It's a rainy day today, which means the roads are just shiny ice ... not good.

Jill and Flip ... open door? ... Sorry, I was thinking about the wrong door last night when you asked ...ignore my response, please shrug.gif

He warmed up by the fire in the basement. Through the glass door he watched the flames licked the evidence before consuming them in crackling sounds. The power outage was unfortunate but it didn’t stop him. He had a flashlight. He was able to finish his task. His supervisor would praise him for his initiative.

Soon only ashes remained, and the room cooled down. Time to check the building one last time.

+++++

Twice Jack almost tripped going down the stairs, making him stop by the bullpen to get a flashlight. The daycare was on the first floor …and locked. Contrary to the assistant director’s door, that one was easy to break into. He flashed the light around him having never ventured in here before. There were many rooms, and he searched them all, opening every cupboard. He found blankets, diapers and clothes, and took what looked like to be the smallest sizes. In the kitchen, he was relieved to stumble onto bottles and powder formula.

“Sue will figure it out”, reading the label for instructions.

He made one more stop before rejoining them.

The bad guy looks dangerously... sad.gif when he didn't hesitate to light the archives with evidences.... he won't hesitate to hurt anybody... eek.gif and he wants to go through the building!!!!!!!

He needn't to hurt Sue, Jack or baby!!!!!

I'm sure Sue will know exactly what to do...she is just such a motherly figure.....maybe she can help Jack out a bit too....oh, this could get interesting...please post more really, really, really, really soon!!! bounching.gif

Marlo, I totally forgot about Day Care!! Thank Goodness Jack didn't!!

Oh, who is this guy????

Jill
tongue.gif I knew he was resourseful. Now......about this door.......now you really have me worried!

And what are we burning, and who is the supervisor, and who does he work for???

Lots of questions have been rasied, I guess I'll have to wait patiently for the answers! biggrin.gif

I'm a little concerned about the man in the basement and even more concerned about what he was burning!!

I'm pleased the baby is wriggling and what a good job the Hoover building has a daycare centre!

Looking forward as always to the next part,

Taking stuff from daycare is best idea smile.gif

Continuing to be quite nervous about that guy...what was Jack's last stop...looking forward to what you do with Jack, Sue and the babe.
Mirjam
Smart thinking, Jack: daycare!

Now I am DEFINATELY sure it isn't Santa or an elf lurking... What's with this guy, Marlo? Why will he be checking the building, and what stop did Jack make before joining Sue and the baby again???

Questions, questions, questions! Time for some answers! And BTW, have you noticed no-one complained about this not being a short story, Marlene...? wink.gif

I kind of noticed that ... and I take it that it's a hint
marlo29

“Well …assistant directors have nothing to complain”, she observed after entering the private bathroom. She found matches in her purse and lit up the candles that were lining up the counter.

She turned the tab on, and sighed in relief when warm water came out. It wouldn’t last if the electricity didn’t return, but it should be enough to fill the sink and clean up the wailing infant. She noticed the cord was tied with a thin white shoelace. Sue couldn’t see any marks, cuts or bruises on her skin. She had thin fuzzy dark brown, almost black hair and bright blue eyes.

He followed the sound of the crying baby. The lock had been blasted. He stepped inside as quietly as a mouse. The blonde woman was left alone with the infant. He stayed in the shadow observing her. She had blood on her clothes, but she looked stronger than a few hours ago. And she seemed to care about the baby. He retreated behind a desk when he heard footsteps in the hallway.

“Jack is right …you are gorgeous …and all clean …more or less …” talking more to herself than anyone else. She didn’t have much experience with infant having only occasionally babysat her nephews and nieces. The red shade the little girl’s face was turning, the shape of her mouth and the frantic movement of her chest told Sue she was crying quite hard.

Jack watched from the doorway as Sue sweet talked the infant without success, and smiled. She caught his reflection in the mirror. Their eyes locked, and for an instant Jack saw his future play in front of him. She was his partner, his friend …the best part of the two of them …was there a chance?

“Jack”, smiling back at him. “Would you hold her while I clean myself, please?” finishing wrapping her up in a towel.

“Not yet, Sue”, placing what he found on the counter. The diaper and sleeper were a size too big, but it kept her cover. “And I have food that I will let you mix once you changed”, dropping her gym bag that he retrieved from her locker.

‘Jack, Sue’, repeating the name in his mind, waiting for the first suitable occasion to dash outside the room, and leave them to the consequences of their actions.

“Thank you, Jack”, handing him the little girl that he awkwardly held. “You won’t break her”, chuckling at the picture they made. That was the cue he needed, the attention of the couple solely focus on the child. “She’s a tough little cookie”, pushing him outside the washroom. Jack looked at the main door he was so certain he closed when he came him before shrugging it off. It had been a long day …his imagination was playing tricks on him.

She hoped it was fine to mix warm water with the powder formula because it was the only thing they had and the infant was visibly hungry. Sue saw the immense relief on Jack’s face when she joined them with the bottle. He obviously hadn’t been able to calm her down.

“She’s all yours”, gladly returning her. He observed as Sue sat comfortably by the fire, the baby cradled in her arms. He welcomed the sudden silence as she began sucking avidly.

‘Are you hungry?’ he signed.

“Starving”, was her immediate response.

“Can I leave you again? The cafeteria should have some food left.”

“Only if you promise not to shoot your way into it”, she teased.

“Very funny”, tapping the tip of her nose with his finger, only to be rewarded with a bright smile. “I’ll be right back.”

He didn’t shoot the cafeteria locks but he broke them. The bureau would have his head over all the damage he caused. He chuckled as he reentered the assistant director’s office. Cleanup would need to be added to the ever-growing list, but they would also deserve a commendation for resourcefulness, or at least Sue would. She had tipped over one of the drawers, and papers filled the desk. The drawer, resting by the fireplace, was lined with a blanket, and the little infant was peacefully sleeping in it.

“Sorry, I could only find lukewarm hot chocolate and sandwiches”, offering her a cup and a Styrofoam wrap. “I promise to take you out for a real meal in a nice restaurant once we are rescued.”

“I will hold you to that, Jack”, her eyes twinkling.

“I’m counting on it”, his eyes lingering on her as he sat by her side.

“Jack, someone took the time of tying and cut her cord. Her airway was clear. Yet, she was discarded like …” her voice broke and she lowered her head towards the makeshift crib.

Jack wrapped her in his arms. When she didn’t resist he grew bolder, and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. Her hand came to rest over his heart, and he placed his over hers, intertwining their fingers together. Peace settled over him. He had no answers …only one certitude. If it hadn’t been for the storm, the jammed garage door and Sue’s timely visit to the washroom, no one would have ever known about the little girl.

What a lovely tender moment that was between the two of them, and that last sentence just gave me the chills. That baby girl's luck thankfully changed for the better when Sue found her...

What a great story this is! clapping.gif

You have left me with lots of questions. For instance -- why is that man lurking -- and he seemed pleased that Sue was taking care of the baby -- only why would he be if he was the one who dumped her in the garbage can? Where is the mother? Who is his supervisor? How does he have access to the Hoover building unless his supervisor is an agent and he is one too ohmy.gif Oi -- my head is spinning. However I love the blossoming relationship between Jack and Sue. wub.gif

We seem to be making some progress with Jack and Sue!!

I have to agree with Kav too.....I don't understand why this man seems to be interested in the baby after it looks like he discarded it in a garbage can. Or is that the key.....looks like? I love how resourceful Jack and Sue are being in order to help the little girl. OK Marlo.....you need to have them come up with a name and soon because "little girl" just isn't cutting it for this strong-willed little baby!

They saved the little infant, come to think of it she is right, if they weren't there the little infant wouldn't have survived it shakes head.gif
marlo29
She must have dozed off because she didn’t recall falling asleep over his chest with his arms wrapped securely around her. She wasn’t certain what woke her up but looking in the drawer she saw the little infant wiggling under the blanket. She must not be crying yet, Sue thought, since Jack’s chest was rising and falling regularly under her head. He was fast asleep, but when she tried to get up he instantly tightened his embrace, pulling her intimately against him, sending the butterflies in her stomach soaring wildly.

She dreamed of this so often, lifting her chin to gaze at his face. Her fingers lightly brushed his features. He seemed so relaxed, the worry lines around his eyes inexistent at the moment. She hesitated when she neared his lips.

Through almost closed eyes, he observed her, trying to stay as still as possible in order not to scare her away. He wondered if Sue could feel his frantic heartbeat. He saw her smile as her stroked his unshaved chin. When she grazed his lips he sensuously licked the tip of the fingers …startling her. She noticed his mouth curling slightly, and his eyes opening a tiny bit wider.

“How long have you been awake, Jack?” surprising him by not pulling away.

“Long enough to know I like what you’re doing to me”, answering honestly, one hand caressing its way up from her back to her neck before losing itself in the silky blond hair. He felt her shiver under his touch despite the warmth of the fireplace. Their eyes locked, and the fire burning into hers was a reflection of the one burning inside him. So many unspoken words already loomed between them. And at the moment he didn’t seem any closer of finding the right ones …which left him with only one solution.

The kiss was soft, gentle, his lips skimming over hers in a feathery caress. When she began to respond he slowly let his restraint go until he completely lost himself in her arms. He leisurely explored her mouth, allowing her to catch up with him, which she was more than willing to do. His hands grew bolder venturing along the gap between her sweatpants and t-shirt, caressing her bare back, while she wrapped hers around his neck slowly loosening his tie. When he pulled away she groaned. He smiled at her, stroking her cheek, his deep brown eyes staring intently at her.

“Have I ever told you how much I love you?” the words out of his mouth before he could recall them.

“No”, she murmured, as stunned as he was by the sudden confession.

“I love you, Sue”, freely repeating it, heartened by the stars shining in her eyes as it sank in for both of them.

“Jack …” He didn’t give her a chance to finish as he captured her lips once more. “Love …you”, she murmured in the kiss, abandoning herself to the sensations he awoke in her. When he cupped her head to look into her hazy eyes she complained at the interruption.

“I’m not going anywhere, Sue” brushing her hairline with his thumb and grinning widely. “I intend to finish this conversation.”

“We’re not having a conversation, Jack”, teasing him.

“When did …” following her gaze. She blushed and came to retrieve her hand from inside his shirt, but he stopped her, his hand moving over hers. His tie was nowhere to be found and his shirt was unbuttoned halfway. “I expect you to remember where you were when we resume this …non-verbal conversation”, winking at her.

“Jack!” a darker shade of red spreading on her face.

“But in the meantime we have a little missy that is waking up”, turning his head towards the drawer. “Do you think you could prepare her another bottle?” loosening his grip around her.

“If you change her diaper”, she quipped.

“Me?” panic rising quickly.

“Do you see anyone else in the room?” placing a quick kiss on his lips before escaping his arms to go retrieve the infant.

I have a feeling that more "non-verbal conversations" are going to take place before this story ends. It's apparent that they are letting go of their inhibitions and just letting their emotions take control....which is a good thing....unless.......hey they don't have sercurity cameras in the assistant directors office do they? Oh yeah....the electricity is out! That's a good thing! Fantastic as always Marlo! Hope you are busily writing another post as we speak! writing.gif

“I think she’s falling asleep”, informed Jack. The infant was finally quieting down after her stomach stopped rebelling against the formula. They had taken a chance knowing it was probably too cold, and they found themselves taking turns pacing the room with her against their shoulder. “Should I try to put her down?” her fist holding tight to the collar of his shirt.

“Probably won’t work, Jack”, doubting the infant would appreciate. He wasn’t done lowering her down that he was lifting her up again.

“I guess she will keep us company”, Sue smiled, snuggling against him after he gave her the baby who calmed down instantly against her chest. He wrapped his arms around both, seeking her lips, only to feel small kicks coming his way when he tightened his embrace.

“We have a chaperone”, he joked, stroking the little head. “I have to behave”, gazing adoringly at the woman who stole his heart so long ago.

“It may not be a bad thing, Jack”, all flushed, highly aware of his hand caressing her back under her shirt. “Abigail will …”

“Abigail?” he repeated in astonishment.

“Don’t you like it? She needs a name”, she observed.

“Abigail …suits her”, agreeing with her.

“Jack …”, hesitating, unsure if he would approve. “Do we need to turn her to children services right away? Could we keep her for her first Christmas?”

“Aren’t you driving to your parents tomorrow?” stating the obvious.

“I’m thinking a change of plan might be in order”, smiling at him. “And …I could see you …since you’re staying in DC.”

“Or I could go with you meet your parents …since I’m dating their daughter”, wiggling his brow mischievously. “Your choice”, he declared. “Either way, spending the holidays with you will be wonderful”, kissing the top of her nose, and making her feel all giddy inside.

“We can flip a coin”, not really having any preference as long as she was with him. “But you didn’t answer my question about Abigail.”

“She doesn’t belong to us, Sue”, he argued gently.

“She doesn’t belong to anyone, Jack”, her temper flaring now that she had time to process the events of the night. “It’s not like someone will be missing her. She was thrown away like …like garbage”, fighting to control herself. “She will be sent in a foster home to people who may not care about her”, cuddling the little body cradled in her arms, while pleading with Jack.

“I don’t think it’s such a good idea to keep her, Sue”, wanting to make her listen to reason. “We will grow attach to her and giving her back will be too hard.”

She lowered her head, her silence speaking volume. When he lifted her chin, he saw the unshed tears shining in her eyes. “No matter when …it will hurt to let Abigail go”, she murmured, unable to refrain herself from bonding with the infant she found and named.

Their weapons drawn, the two agents cautiously entered the room. Once the electricity was restored in the middle of the night, many alarms were triggered inside the building. They secured the bathroom first, noticing the bloody woman’s clothes on the floor.

“What happened here?” whispered the younger agent. The other gestured towards the fireplace. A gun was on the side table, he retrieved it quietly.

“Is that special agent Hudson?” the rookie asked, staring at the couple cuddled on the floor by the fire.

“Yah, and the blond on his shoulder is Thomas, his …partner”, smirked Wilson, who holstered his gun, imitated by the rookie.

“Partner?” giving his own partner an astounded look. “Some guys have all the luck. Do you think the clothes are hers?”

“Who knows?” shrugging. “Hey, Hudson”, rousing Jack unceremoniously. Jack bolted, gripping the older agent by the throat. Startled by the sudden commotion, Sue woke up instantly and the baby began to cry.

“Security, agent Hudson”, yelled the rookie coming to the rescue of his colleague, holding on to Jack’s arm, who released the man.

“Sorry …just …protecting them”, running his fingers into his hair. “Where’s my gun?” fighting to chase the fog from his sleepy mind.

“Here”, placing it back on the table. “Can you tell us what happened?” suspiciously eyeing the baby that Thomas was soothing. “Someone left a trail of destruction.”

“Yah …hum …the baby was born during the storm and we needed a place to keep her warm. I knew that office had a fireplace”, becoming more coherent with each passing minutes.

That explained the blood on the clothes, thought the older agent. “Did you also raid the day care and the cafeteria?” Jack nodded.

“We’ll return the baby’s clothes on Monday, and I’ll pay for the food”, said Jack. “Sorry for the mess on the assistant director desk. It was necessary.”

“It’s my fault. I made a crib out of one of the unlocked drawers”, speaking for the first time after sitting up.

“Very resourceful”, admitted the veteran. “But why were you here to begin with? Wasn’t everyone sent home?”

“We missed the announcement. And we got stuck in the garage …couldn’t leave”, Jack explained. “You need to secure the ladies restroom on the first floor in the east wing. The baby was born there. Get forensic to go through it.” The agents exchanged a dubious glance. “I believe there’s a camera in that wing, too”, continued Jack, having missed their look. “I want the tape from yesterday, and the results from the lab on my desk by Monday morning.”

“Whatever you say”, shrugged the veteran. “I believe maintenance is working in the garage as we speak, after someone reported being trapped”, Jack pointing to himself. “You’re good to go. I suggest you give your supervisor a full report at the earliest convenience”, his gaze travelling from Hudson to Thomas, lingering on the baby. “You may want to take them to the hospital. The power has been restored to St. Vincent, but the entire southeast district is still in the dark, and the phone lines are dead. Be careful, the roads are treacherous.”

The two agents watched as Hudson picked up their belonging, including the ones in the bathroom, and an arm around Thomas’ waist led her outside.
