Hi again!!

While I was working on 'The Graveyard Shift', I came across this idea. It was meant for fun only and I basicly wanted to see if I can write J/S fluff (You all write them so well that I have trouble in writing them myself). I also wanted to see if I could do short story with very little plot other then the fuzzy ending...
I never meant to post it but...here you go... (4745 words...without Kav's brilliant intro... biggrin.gif )

A slight warning...this is pure, pointless fluff...
(and nothing like 'Let it Snow'.)

Enjoy!! biggrin.gif

“Has he announced it yet, then?” the newcomer asked eagerly as she jostled her way through the crowd.

“No, not yet,” someone whispered and was shushed by his neighbour.

“Shhh. He’s reaching into the bag…”

A collective gasp circled the room as every elf strained forward to eagerly hear what Santa was going to announce. This ceremony had become the highlight of their Yuletide season. Held on December 1st it represented the true meaning of Christmas; a chance to reconnect with one of their special clients whom they had lost to adulthood.

Each year, Santa reached into his sorting sack of grown-up names and drew out the name of someone who needed a special dose of Christmas magic this year. The magic saw to it that they all remembered the child now grown; every visit, every gift, the triumphs and the tears. It was always exciting to see the dear child in adulthood, though often disappointing.

“Has he pulled it out yet? I can’t see!” complained a young elf at her elbow.

“Here, let me give you a leg up,” the newcomer said kindly. “He’s just pulling out the name now.”

They all watched as Santa looked at the gilt edged parchment. He nodded his head, smiling in remembrance and then looked out into the crowd. “This is going to be a very special Christmas indeed,” Santa told them, holding up the card for everyone to see. The words magically sailed off the page and grew into a shimmering neon-lit billboard flashing a name they all knew and loved. Their minds were flooded with memories, both happy and sad and they waited eagerly for Santa’s next announcement.

“Dewberry, I think. Yes Dewberry, I think you’re the best match.”

“Oh my goodness, that’s me!” the newcomer squealed excitedly, toppling the young elf she was holding onto the ground. “Sorry. Excuse me. Let me through please. That’s my name Santa just called.” Dewberry made her way to the front of the hall and stood bashfully next to Santa. She was still a terribly young elf for this kind of honour.

Santa squeezed her shoulder warmly. “You’ll do just fine,” he told her, passing the parchment into her hands. “Remember, your assignment is to make our Special Client’s Christmas wishes come true.”

“I wish he could see me in a different light.”

Dewberry huffed as she looked at the piece of parchment she held in her hand. Surely, there was more to it. It was impossible that she could ask for something so vague. Questions seemed to flood her elvish mind as she pondered the true meaning of the wish made by the special client.

Humans were complicated creatures. She huffed as she walked around in the crowded streets, invisible to those who didn’t bother to look for her. Especially older humans, they were the most complicated of them all. Children were much easier, often, they had very clear wishes. She remembered her last client quite fondly; she worked only with children up until now, like every other young elf and her last client was very special to her.

The child wanted to see her mother one last time but Dewberry couldn’t bring back people to life. Instead, she gave the child a special dream and she cried a good, healthy cry when the dream was over. At that time, she really felt like she made a difference.

But now, Santa decided she was good enough to help an adult human.

She glanced at the parchment again. What does a different light mean? She could create all sorts of lights: starlight, moonlight, colorful lights. Did her client mean that she wanted to be seen in a different light?

Dewberry shrugged her shoulders. She could do that, it wasn’t very hard. Playing with light was one of the first things she learned to do. She hurried after her special client and stood behind her on the pavement. As the pedestrian light turned green she crossed the intersection.

Behind her, she heard an excited cry: “Mom! Mom, did you see that?” a small boy was pulling his mother sleeve. “Mom can you see her?”

The woman turned and concentrated for a moment, staring right into Dewberry’s purple eyes. Dewberry blinked, could it be? Adult humans never noticed her before. But the woman shook her head. “I think you ate too many cookies, Adam.”

“But mom…” He hurried after her and Dewberry smiled gently, sending him some good dreams about elves and Santa and happy holidays.

They could be so blind sometimes.

Dewberry was proud of herself. She did a fine job, this was easy all she needed to do now was to watch and make sure everything is moving smoothly. She sat in the corner, hidden from view by a large plastic tree. Feeling just a little giddy, she snapped her fingers and added some golden decorations to the dusty fake leaves. She heard someone whistling and turned to admire her work.

“Sue, you look cheerful!” Tara glanced from her computer and admired her friend.

Sue seemed confused. “What are you talking about? I look dreadful. I’m soaking wet and my hair is going all over the place.”

“The Sheila’s right, Sue.” Bobby added. “You seem different.”

“I think you’re all gone crazy.” Sue mumbled to herself, moving towards the coffee machine. She had a terrible morning. She woke up late, spilled coffee all over her blouse and then got completely wet on the way over towards the office. She just felt like going back home and crawl back to bed.

She felt drained for quite some time now. She was actually happy that the case load was low and that she will have some free time on Christmas next week but then, everything seemed to fall apart. She had a huge fight with her mother, leading her to the decision of not going home that Christmas and the most horrible thing was that she was actually relieved. She wanted to be at the ball this year. Everyone attended and she was beginning to think that staying in DC was a brilliant idea. And then Mike Horton came by.

Mike Horton was one of their informants. He had an important lead and called them. After they finished their conversation he made a pass on her, she declined and he insisted. She could handle him but Jack decided he needed to barge in, nearly hitting the other man. They had a huge fight afterwards; she didn’t need his protection, she could take care of herself. He agreed and even apologized but then he had to add something more.

“Sue, please understand…I care about you. You’re like…” He hesitated for a moment and looked around them. “You’re like a sister to me.”

She smiled and thanked him.

But she sobbed on the inside.

Many spoons of ice cream later, she fell asleep. Her eyes no longer wet from tears. She wondered if he could ever see her in a different light.

“Jack, have you seen her?”

Bobby’s whispered words did nothing to penetrate the fog that enveloped his mind. He blinked at his Aussie friend and managed to form some kind of a response by clearing his throat. His eyes moved from his friend to the woman who sat in his line of vision, watching as she worked quietly.

Of course he saw her! What kind of a stupid question was that? He noticed her from the moment she walked into the room, he always did. But today, she seemed so different. She held herself higher and looked practically…glowing. Her hair was wet and seemed to shine in the florescent light. Her brown eyes were deep and in a weird kind of a way looked almost purple.

He swallowed. He had no business thinking thoughts like that, her eyes gazing up to him when he moves to kiss her, her hair like silk when he caresses it. He gulped and got up quickly, grabbing his coat and leaving the room.

Six pairs of human eyes watched him as he left, one pair of canine soulful eyes blinked at his hasty departure and one pair of elvish purple eyes narrowed at his retreating form. Dewberry sighed; it wasn’t as easy as she thought.

Jack Hudson was usually a man of action. He always took chances and always knew he was capable of making mistakes and then get back on his feet again. But his last mistake seemed to be the kind of mistake you pay for. He told Sue Thomas, the love of his life, that he cared for her like a sister.

He made a loud sound of frustration, startling the man who stood beside him at the crosswalk. The man huffed and moved a little to the right. Jack gave another sigh of disgust and the man glared openly at him. “Do you mind?” He snapped and Jack looked at him.

“Excuse me?” Jack wondered. He had no idea what he did to deserve such a rude comment.

A car drove towards the intersection, splashing water at their direction. The strange man cursed loudly when his entire coat and briefcase turned soaked wet and then gave a cry of frustration when he saw Jack’s dry appearance. He walked away, muttering to himself.

Dewberry was pleased. The distraction was over and Jack could think about Sue again. And indeed, as she followed him around his thoughts once again returned to the blond woman.

He had no idea why he told her that he cared about her like a sister; he only knew that he was suddenly terrified. He saw that guy hitting on her and suddenly remembered all the times he could have lost her. But it wasn’t the right time, he wanted to tell her but she was angry with him and the sudden fear of rejection gripped his heart and didn’t seem to let go ever since. He was a grown man for heavens sake, why was he so afraid of speaking to her?

He knew why, he realized that yesterday when she looked so heavenly and so lovely that he needed to clear his head if he wanted to keep functioning. He knew without a doubt that finally, after all these years, this was the real thing. His heart couldn’t stand rejection from her; he wouldn’t be able to live without her.

And today…today she walked into the office with the most amazing outfit. She wore black skirt and silk burgundy blouse that showed her creamy shoulders. He was such a Neanderthal; his mouth was actually watering at the thought of her in that shirt. He shook his head.

He didn’t deserve her, he concluded in his mind and thoughts about slowly removing satin shirts from creamy shoulders and kissing hot skin shouldn’t be in his mind. He scratched his chin and breathed heavily. He needed to get back in the office; his lunch break lasted far too long.

He mentally prepared himself to see her again. He could do it, he could look in her eyes and act like everything is perfectly fine. He could look in her brown eyes and reach his hand to stroke her cheek before tangling his other hand in her silky hair and lower his own head. He could see her licking her lips with her tongue and he would lower his lips and taste her sweet mouth, devouring…

He wondered if he had time for a quick shower in the men’s locker room.

Dewberry stared at him with astonishment. The electrical charge that flew from his body was powerful enough to shock her and the scent of sweet desire and soft love filled her nostrils. She wondered how he kept on living without bursting into flames. She pursed her lips and thought for a moment. Getting Sue to buy that silky shirt was hard enough, she had to use a lot of magic on this one and although Sue seemed happy with her new outfit, it obviously wasn’t the ‘different light’ she needed.

The elf grinned widely. Desperate times required desperate measures.

Sue breathed deeply when she turned her car engine off. She applied some makeup and pulled the wool hat over her head, hiding her hair from sight. She couldn’t believe her bad luck. It seemed like ever since Jack told her he cared for her like a sister her world was falling apart. Of course, she smiled bitterly; it usually does when the man of your dreams tells you he sees you like a sister.

His words seemed to throw her in some kind of a whirlwind. She bought several new outfits and even wore one to work yesterday and yet he seemed unaffected. He also seemed to avoid her and wouldn’t even look in her eyes when he talked to her. She had no idea why but she wanted to make him look at her; prove to him that she wasn’t his sister. It didn’t seem to work.

So after the disaster of the previous day she decided she needed some pampering and down time for relaxation. She and Lucy took the morning off and went to the beauty salon. There was nothing like a manicure and a massage to calm a broken heart…at least for a few hours. In a spontaneous decision, she decided to make some changes in her hair. She thought she might get some red highlights…just for fun.

Once the hairdresser was done and she opened her eyes she regretted the decision. She felt the vibrations from Lucy’s shouts and couldn’t stop the tears that flowed down her cheeks. Why her? Why did it happen to her? And why did it happen at a time like that when she needed her self confidence back?

She closed her eyes in horror, allowing her mind to slip away as Lucy hugged her tight. She dreamed about him last night, she dreamed that they were dancing and that he admired the silk blouse that she wore. His hands caressed her bare shoulders and she rested her head on his shoulder and inhaled his wonderful scent. He moved his head and pressed a kiss to her hair and she raised her eyes to meet his and he was grinning at her.

She licked her lips and saw the way his brown eyes turned darker and unfocused. He lowered his head and their lips met slowly, teasing, testing. His touch was soft and gentle and she opened her mouth, her tongue moving to meet his. The sensation was so powerful that she shuddered in his arms and he pulled her closer. His mouth moved lower and kissed a line along her collarbone, she thought she could die from happiness.

The disappointment she felt when she woke up was heart wrenching, she tried really hard not to cry. And now she was here in a salon, looking like the cookie monster and she couldn’t do anything about it.

“Lucy, I can’t go to the office.” She whispered.

Lucy shook her head. “You must, Sue. It’s a good thing! Show everyone that you can stand on your own two feet no matter what.”

Sue pondered her words for a moment before nodding her head. Lucy was right; she was a grown woman and she could hold her own no matter what. She sighed. “Okay, I’ll grab some coffee and follow you.”

Lucy nodded her head and left the salon.

Sue looked at the mirror again and sighed softly. “Okay, Levi…let’s hope for the best.”

Myles paused for a moment when he heard someone calling for him. He raised his head from the file he was reading and greeted her as she fell into step beside him. “Good morning, Lucy.”

Lucy smiled. “Good morning, Myles how are you this fine morning?”

Myles frowned. “It’s raining non stop, you call this morning fine?”

Lucy paused beside him and then smiled at him, reaching out to touch his shoulder. “That suit looks very good on you.” She said sweetly.

He arched an eyebrow at her and closed the folder he was reading, leading her to the side of the hallway. “What can I do for you, Lucy?”

She paused. “Nothing, everything is fine. What makes you think I need something?”

“You realize your voice got really high in that last question?” He drawled.

She stomped her foot and sighed. “It’s not me, it’s Sue…she had a little accident…”

“An accident?” Myles interrupted. His features were serious and worried as he reached his hand to touch her shoulder. “Is she alright? What happened?”

Lucy gazed at him with surprise before shaking her head. “She’s perfectly fine. It’s not that kind of an accident.” She hurried and explained what happened in the beauty salon and Myles was trying really hard not to laugh. “I give you credit for not really laughing.” She said. “Please, don’t say anything, Myles. Sue is really upset lately.”

“Really?” Myles asked quietly. “I suppose our brave team leader has some responsibility for that.”

Lucy shrugged her shoulders. “She wouldn’t tell me but I can see that they are not themselves and everyone can feel it.”

Myles agreed. “I’ll do my best to keep my mouth shut when I see her.” He promised.

Lucy nodded her head and walked towards the ladies bathroom while Myles turned towards the bullpen. He immediately noticed the strange silence that surrounded the room and frowned when he saw Jack staring with his mouth opened at the general direction of the coffee machine. He raised his eyebrow and turned his head, swallowing hard at the sight before him.

Sue stared at him from her position next to the coffee maker and waited for the verbal banter that was sure to head towards her way. Myles’ eyes did a funny dance as he tried to focus them at her face and yet they kept on moving upwards to her hair. He swallowed several times before coughing. “Good morning, Sue.” He said quietly.

She gaped at him and was horrified at the new stream of tears that flowed from her eyes. She slammed the coffee cup on the desk and rushed towards the ladies bathroom. Lucy, who just walked inside the room, hurried after her.

“Myles, what did you do?” She shouted as she passed him.

“I didn’t do anything!” He hurried after her.

Stunned silence surrounded the bullpen until Tara rose from her desk. “I kinda like Sue’s new color. Blue fits her…it’s very festive”

Bobby burst in laughter. “Did you see how Myles’ eyes nearly popped out of his head?”
