Against my better judgement I will post this. I am supposed to be revising for me GCSE mocks but Sue Thomas fan fiction is much more important!!! HEHE

PG13 just in case
Starts with angst then leads to lots of fluffy fuzzies
I'm not really sure how happy I am with this story...its quite a different take on the challenge and to be honest I've allready made myself cry..I wanted to make a funny story because of the after Christams blues but it didn't really work!!! but have promised to end it with lots of warm fluffy fuz!!!!

Well here it goes.... (runs and hides)

Let It Snow

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It doesn't show signsof stopping
And I've bought some corn for popping
The lights are turned way down low
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

When we finally kissgoodnight
How I'll hate going out in the storm!
But if you'll really hold me tight
All the way home I'll be warm

The fire is slowly dying
And, my dear, we're still goodbying
But as long as you love me so
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

The tinny broadcast of the popular carol was certainly appropriate for their own weather forecast. It didn’t show signs of stopping. Traffic was snarled, planes grounded and trains overcrowded as potential travelers were forced to put their holidays on hold. There was no doubt; they wouldn’t be getting through tonight. They’d have to make the best of it here and try again in the morning. Turning to his companion he smiled apologetically and said, “Sorry hun, doesn’t look like we will be getting there tonight. I think I saw a hotel a few miles back, I think we should head for that; I don’t fancy getting stuck out in this blizzard.”

“It’s fine Jack, my parents weren’t expecting us until tomorrow anyway. Besides I don’t really want to take our chances either, not with Elayner and just think if we can get her somewhere warm to sleep….”

“…we can start on baby number 2!” Jack replied finishing his wife’s sentence with an audacious wink.

“Jack Hudson…..” Jack grinned as he turned the car around and headed back the way they had just come. The snow was falling heavily and visibility was poor.

“What are we going to get Elayner for her Birthday; she’s seven next month you know!”

Jack smiled at the memories of the last six years. “I know, I don’t know where the time has gone.”

The car rounded the corner and drove back over the bridge; the normally fast flowing river now thickly frozen. Through the winter blur of sleet and snow Jack could just make out the speeding car coming towards them, swerving over both sides of the road. Blasted drunk drivers he swore to himself. His heart pounding as the car grew closer he swerved away from them skidding on to the ice that glazed the road. The other car spun wildly out of control. Everything seemed to be happening in slow motion as both vehicles slammed through the brick wall of the bridge and crashed into the bleakness below. The fire licked its way higher the heat contrasting the coldness of the snow and ice. Jack was knocked un conscious instantly.

*****************

Jack fought the effects of the sedative and tried to open his eyes. It took him several moments to adjust to the hazy yellow glow of the hospital room. A strange voice that he did not recognize pierced his train of thought, the now familiar English accent coming from a small nurse standing next to his bed.

“It’s all right Mr Hudson. Try to rest and go back to sleep.” She was a kind and warm looking person with a captivating smile.

Suddenly Jack’s eyes shot open again, realization dawning and a sickening feeling spread over his entire body. He tried to sit up but was pressed down firmly again by the nurse. “I need to find them….please you have to let me go I need to see them.” Jack’s eyes filling with tears.

“Mr Hudson…..you’ve been drifting in and out of consciousness for the past six weeks.” Jack’s eyes widened as the news sunk in, “You were the only one pulled from the wreckages and honestly we thought we were going to lose you too.”

“You mean….” He couldn’t bring himself to say it, he refused to believe it.

“I’m so sorry.”

”And here we go with another Christmas classic for all of you poor folks out there in this blizzard. The weather broadcasters have warned all people from traveling unless absolutely necessary so remember…don’t travel unless you have to……and here we go with Let it Snow…”

Oh the weather outside is frightful

Jack hurriedly fiddled with the buttons of the radio changing the station. Sue noticed his change in behavior instantly as he fumbled with the tiny buttons. His body had tensed some what and all color had drained from is face. Sue looked out of the window, the heavy falling snow layering the city in white. The millions of lights from buildings and cars gave more than enough light for Sue and Jack to have a conversation. The traffic was not moving anywhere and they were already 15 minutes late. “I’ll call D, let him know we might be a while,” she said.

Jack’s sudden change in behavior returned to normal almost as quickly as it had begun, “Ok, although Bobby will probably be later than us, he hadn’t even left when I picked you up!” He grinned at Sue.

Sue spoke to Donna and told her they wouldn’t be there for a good half an hour. she said it was no problem, Bobby wasn’t there either and dinner wouldn’t be ready until then anyway.

The traffic snaked slowly along and Jack and Sue chatted about work then what they were doing for Christmas before finally moving on to the subject of Lucy’s new boyfriend. They were laughing merrily as they pulled into D’s driveway.

Knocking on the door, Donna and D greeted them. The rest of the team was already there; all warmly snuggled in the living room sipping hot cocoa.

The evening passed joyfully away. Donna put on a splendid roast dinner and afterwards they all played games and exchanged Christmas presents; then D bought out the mistletoe and held it above his head as he gave his wife a quick kiss. Donna passed it round the group and some how it conveniently ended up over Jack and Sue’s head.

“Now why am I not surprised about that Lucy?” Jack teased as she stood on tiptoe above the couple holding the plant firmly in place above their heads.

“Tradition Jack,” she said mocking a serious pout.

Continuous chanting from the rest of the gang left Jack no choice and rolling his eyes he planted a quick kiss on Sue’s cheek. Smiling at her she grinned back.

The night was filled with laughter and fun and no one wanted to it to end. “Thanks D, Donna, I had a great time,” said Sue as she stepped out onto the snowy porch with Jack close behind.

“You taking Sue home?” asked D.

“Yeah, Lucy’s being picked up by Gordon and staying over at his so I’ll drop Sue back at the apartment,” replied Jack.

“Ok, see you two tomorrow,” replied D with a sly grin. Rolling his eyes, Jack followed Sue towards the car and after shutting Levi in the back he climbed into the front.

*************

The weather wasn’t any better; in fact the snow was falling even heavier if that was possible and the icy roads made driving treacherous. Again the traffic slowed right down and began its agonizingly slow pace through the city.

Jack and Sue sat and talked about the evening discussing the presents that they had received and how much fun it was for the team to be together out of work hours. Flashing lights up ahead caught Jack’s attention. “I think there’s been an accident up ahead,” he said. As they neared the site the lights became much brighter and grew in quantity. “Looks pretty bad,” he added.

“Maybe we should get out and help?” replied Sue. Jack nodded and pulled the car into a space nearby; both jumping out of the car they hurried over to a man who looked to be giving instructions. Flashing his badge he approached the officer, “Anything we can do, we’re with the FBI.”

“Thanks but we have everything under control, flaming drunk drivers,” the man added under his breath. “We managed to get everyone out but I have to tell you the kid had us worried.”

“Kid?” repeated Jack, his body tensing and his eyes switching quickly from the officer to the wreckage.

“Yeah, little six year old, but she’s on her way to hospital and they think she’ll be fine.” The officer replied before excusing himself and hurrying over to an approaching vehicle.
Sue touched Jack’s arm to get his attention but his gaze seemed fixed on the cars. “Jack…..Jack are you ok? Jack?” She turned him round to face her.

Suddenly snapping out of his trance he pulled himself together, “Yeah fine, come on lets get going.” He turned and headed for the car with Sue close behind, her mind still unsettled and her instincts telling her there was something wrong.

Oh maybe PG13 not really sure!!!

*********************
Just like earlier, Jack’s strange behavior had returned to normal almost instantly. They settled themselves back in the warm car and continued their journey back to the apartment. As they entered the neighborhood, their surroundings became darker almost instantly and Sue found it difficult to read Jack’s lips.

Turning on the overhead light as he pulled into a parking space he turned to Sue. “I have a flash light in the back, looks like we’re gonna need it….electricity’s out!” noticing Sue’s worried expression, “don’t worry, I’ll take you up and stay until its back on,” he said smiling. Sue relaxed and thanked him. Sue was terrified of the darkness and was glad that Jack had said he would stay.

Fumbling up the stairs Sue pushed the key into the lock and opened the door. It was just as cold inside the apartment as it was outside. “Heating’s out too,” she said as she rummaged around in the bottom drawer of the cabinet for some candles. Finally finding some she placed them around the apartment and lit them with a box of matches.

The soft glow the candles made would have created quite a romantic atmosphere if it had not been for the bitter cold that now filled the room.

“Do youuu fannnnccy somme cccoffee,” Sue asked the cold making her shiver uncontrollably and her teeth chatter. Jack rubbed his gloved hands together in an attempt to keep them warm, his foggy breath created by the cold encircling his head.

“Sure…but, there’s no electricity!” he said, stating the obvious.

Sue cocked her head to one side and raised her eyebrows, “I know that silly, we have a gas stove!”

“Oh,” Jack replied relief flooding over him; he could really use a hot drink. “Great, count me in!” he grinned.

He followed Sue to the kitchen where they placed some more candles around. Sue filled a saucepan of water and placed it on the stove. They stood warming their hands over the gas as they waited for the water to boil; once it was bubbling they made two cups of coffee and went to sit in the living room. Sue pulled out a blanket from under the table and took off her coat. Jack copied her and hung them on the hooks by the door; both were soaking from the melted snow and certainly weren’t doing any job at warming them up.

Sue sat down on the couch, “How long do you think the power will be out?” she asked, the steaming liquid she was drinking starting to take affect as she felt its warmth spread over her body.

“I don’t know but with the weather the way it is, I doubt it will be on much before the morning,” Jack sighed.

“You can stay here if you want…I mean if you don’t have any other plans…which you probably do but I just thought with the weather and traffic being so bad….” Sue was stuttering mercilessly and before she could embarrass herself any more she clamped her mouth shut.
Jack, finally able to talk, “If you’re sure its not too much trouble?” he said. Seeing Sue’s shocked expression he raised his eye brows questioningly.

Sue finally broke from her state of surprise at his answer, “Of course it’s not, I wouldn’t have asked otherwise,” and she hurried into her room to retrieve some more blankets and some pillows.

She returned to the room and passed Jack the thickest blanket. “I hope these will keep us warm enough,” she said.

Jack looked up from arranging the cushions, “Well, if they don’t I’m sure I can come up with something else!” he winked. Sue’s shocked expression and open mouthed gape sent him into a fit of laughter. Finally controlling himself, “I meant a pillow fight!” he said.

“A pillow fight?” Sue questioned, a small smile tugging at her lips, “Ok, but I should warn you I did grow up with three brothers,” she replied matter of factly. Jack’s grin slipped slowly away as they both eyed the nearest pillow. Both motionless they each judged the distance between themselves and the pillow, if they timed it just right……

……..both Sue and Jack scrambled for the pillow, both of them laying their hands on it at the same time. Sue looked up and met Jack’s eyes, his face millimeters from hers. They were so close she could feel his breath on her face, warming her chilled one. Jack arched his eye brows and Sue frowned back cunningly.

“Give me the pillow Thomas!” he whispered daringly.

Sue formed her plan quickly and slowly leant in, her breath tickling his neck and ear. She felt his grip on the pillow relax slightly as the distraction worked and whispered quietly in his ear, “No!” Yanking the pillow she dived around the couch and stood facing him a look of complete triumph over her face.

Jack’s face was a picture, like a puppy that had just been scolded and she knew she was in trouble. Biting her bottom lip she waited for the onslaught. He walked slowly around the couch and Sue mirrored his actions always keeping her distance.

Suddenly he bolted over the couch and dragged her with him to the floor tickling her mercilessly. She screamed and giggled as the attack continued. Her face was soon streaked with tears and when she thought she wouldn’t be able to take any more Jack slowly stopped the attack when Levi came bounding over and began to join in.

They both smiled lovingly at the over excited golden as Jack pulled her to her feet. Searching the room for the disguarded pillow they both lunged for it at the same time. Like a déjà vu they found themselves in the same close proximity as earlier.

“Give me the pillow Sue and don’t try your little diversion technique again, I’m ready for it this time!” Jack said as if he was daring her to attempt it.

Sue’s new plan was a lot more daring than her last but then again what did she have to lose. She and Jack had been friends for so long and ever since their Calahan and Merced kiss she had wanted more. Leaning in she was barely a fraction of a millimeter from his lips when she lost her nerve and slowly drew back.

Jack’s heart had begun beating wildly as her intention dawned and was surprised when she pulled back. ‘It’s now or never,’ he thought, ‘I won’t risk losing her; not now I’ve found her.’ Sue’s progress was halted when Jack closed the widening gap between them and pressed his lips to hers. He silenced her startled gasp and was relieved when he felt her respond.

Straightening from their bent position Jack ran his hands down her arms and settled them at her wait, certain that the shiver he felt was nothing to do with the ever dropping temperature, in fact he thought that it seemed to have heated up considerably.

Sue molded herself against him and ran her fingers through his hair before wrapping her arms around his neck when she felt him pull away. Jack broke the kiss but still kept her in the circle of his arms; her confused eyes staring up to his.

“I...I think I need to tell you something,” Jack gulped almost reluctant to talk, “I think I’m falling in love with you.”

Sue’s eyes misted over as he told her what she had only dreamed he would say to her. “Jack…I think I’m falling in love with you too but….by the pained expression on you face it looks like that’s a bad thing?”

Jack leaned in again and kissed her softly but when he pulled away she could see his eyes were full of tears.

“Jack what’s wrong?”

WARNING emotional scene

************************

Jack walked towards the window picking up the blanket and pulling it round him as he went. The heat that engulfed him moments ago now gone only to be replaced by a bitter chill that he had not felt for several years.

“I do love you Sue,” he said his gaze fixed outside to the street below. Realizing she couldn’t have been able to read him he turned to face her, “I love you Sue don’t ever doubt that.”

Sue’s smile was weak. She picked up her own blanket and wrapped it around her shoulders before joining him at the window. “I know I should have told you before, when you nearly left for New York I got so scared I would lose you and I almost did tell you…” Sue smiled remembering his confession in the hall at the Hoover building.

“Sue I was…I am…so scared of losing you like I lost…..” he couldn’t bring himself to say it. No matter how hard he tried those memories were too painful even after ten years they were like flaming, raw wounds.

He seated himself on the couch and Sue sat opposite from him, her hand resting softly on his arm the love in her eyes telling him to trust her; that he needed to talk to her he needed to share the pain he had kept inside for so long.

Jack sighed deeply and Sue felt as though her heart would break. The man now sitting before her was different from the Jack Hudson she had known for the last three years. He held a painful past one that she longed to help him deal with. She loved him so deeply that it tore her apart to see the pain he was in.

“Sue I haven’t told anyone this…not even Bobby…my parents and three people at the Bureau know, that’s it.” Jack thankful Sue’s expression hadn’t changed allowed him to continue at whatever pace he felt he could manage. Swallowing back another wave of emotion that the memories held, he struggled on.

“It was 16 years ago, I was sent on assignment to England to work a very high profile case; I mean the best of the FBI and MI5 were working it. It was a great honor to be chosen to go and something that an agent who’s been out in the field for years doesn’t necessarily get offered let alone a new rookie.

Anyway, we worked for months and when the case was finally closed I was due to come back to America, but…I didn’t.” Jack hesitated, the fear of re-telling the story enough to make him want to forget he had even broached the subject. A slight touch urged him to continue as Sue closed her hands around his. Jack closed his eyes and continued, “While working on the case I met an MI5 agent,” Jack swallowed deeply and closed his eyes again. “Her name was Amy…………..we… we got married and…….” Jack sighed, his breath rugged and un-steady, “…..we had a little girl, Elayner. She was so beautiful Sue…every day she filled my life with such happiness, such sunshine.” Jack’s sobs racked his body and Sue prayed to God for the strength she needed to help him. He did not want pity, he wanted someone to listen; he wanted her to know what happened and he was willing to finally open up to someone and tell them.

“Elayner was six, only a month off her seventh Birthday. We were traveling to Amy’s parents for Christmas. The weather was bad, much like now. This drunk driver came hurtling towards us and, he slammed us through the brick wall of a bridge.” Jack stopped unable to go on. The deathly silence even Sue could detect penetrated their senses. “I don’t know what happened after that. I was in the hospital for six weeks.

I lost my wife and my daughter that day,” the pain too much he hunched himself over and cried. Sue could do nothing but hold him. The tears from her own eyes fell steadily onto the floor where they swirled in a pool with Jack’s.

Sue reached out and lifted his face to hers, “You came back to America?” Jack nodded slowly.

“I couldn’t stay there. I needed a new start, a new life. After the memorial service I came back; I was re-assigned when I got here and that’s when I met Bobby. Everything changed. I had to leave the past in the past and begin again, there were still days when I didn’t think I’d survive the sadness but gradually I could wake up in the morning and not cry. I started to move on, I knew I had to do it. I still love them Sue, and they’ll always be here,” as the tears spilled again Jack rubbed his hand over his heart.

Sue fell back in his arms as they held each other close. The emotional stress finally lifting from them both as their bodies relaxed and they surrendered to the peace that only sleep held.

Ok, from here on out, it get happier...promise!!!

*************

The soft rays of a wintry sun awoke the sleeping couple. Sue was the first to peel her eyes open from their sleepy sanctuary. Lifting her head from its place on Jack’s chest she glanced around the room. Everything remained as it had done the night before. The candles had died out and Levi was sleeping under a blanket on the opposite couch. The apartment was still icy cold and she pulled the blankets higher over herself and Jack her eyes washing over his face.

She was still so tired, so emotionally drained, she could only imagine how Jack felt. At this moment in time she had never felt closer to him. She had never known until now and no one else would ever find out what torturous past Jack had suffered. She ran here fingers lightly over his cheek. “I love you Jack,” she whispered, leaning in to kiss him ever so lightly.

Laying her head back on his chest she tried to remember everything Jack had said the night before. Something was still not right; a persistent nagging rang in the back of her mind. He had said they held a memorial service. Why not a funeral? A single tear slid down her cheek as she realized that there probably weren’t bodies to find. With all her new FBI skills she had no idea how to handle a situation like this. She prayed silently to God seeking his guidance.

**********************

When Sue awoke several hors later the room had grown lighter but she could tell the power was still out as Levi hadn’t ventured to his basket and still remained tucked up under the blanket on the couch.

Noticing for the first time how arm she felt considering the lack of heating she glanced down at the covers now tucked tightly around her. Adjusting her position she felt an arm tighten around her. Sue looked up into Jack’s eyes and smiled, he he smiled weakly back.

Reaching out Jack tucked a loose piece if hair behind Sue’s ear then skimmed his fingers down the side of her face, “Hey,” he breathed.

“Hey,” she replied sleppily, relaxing back into his arms. “How are you doing?” she asked.

“Better….I’ve never been able to speak to anyone about what happened before and I think maybe it helped.” Sue smiled her understanding as she waited for him to continue. “It’ll never be ok that they’re gone but since you walked into my life things have got better. You bought hope and love back to me Sue, a love I didn’t think I would ever feel again. Thank you, thank you for being there and thank you for loving me. You saved me Sue, and I will love you forever.”

Sue swatted at her eyes removing the tears cooped up. Through a choked sob, “I love you Jack,” she whispered.

***********************

The following days towards Christmas slipped by and both Jack and Sue, now intent on developing their relationship, were more relaxed than they had been in a long time. There was no awkwardness and both knew that if the time came or an occasion arose when the subject needed to be broached again it would; but for now they were content; allowing time to heal the wounds.

Sue was glad that Jack was pretty much his old self again and she enjoyed the time they spent together, however something persistently nagged at her; a few echoing words that wouldn’t go away. “After the memorial service I came back.” Sue had tried and tried to convince herself that there it was nothing but her instincts were telling her differently. On her day off she set about making a few calls of her own; just to convince herself.

“Danielle, its Sue I was wondering if you could do something for me?”

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

“Hey, what did you find out?” Sue asked; she had been waiting anxiously for the past three hours hoping she would call back.

“Well it took me a lot of snooping but I did find the records of the crash. Do you know how difficult it is to get records from England!

“I’m sorry Danielle, I owe you.”

“Hey, I didn’t say it was impossible, not for me anyway! From what I can see there was only one survivor, Jackson Samuel Hudson, his wife and daughter as well as the two men in the other car were killed. According to the records it was a pretty bad crash, the two men died instantly. When the autopsy results came back they had found extremely high levels of alcohol in their blood. The wife, Amy Hudson, was identified using dental records but they didn’t find the child’s body and…”

“Did you say they didn’t find the little girls’ body?” Sue asked her heart beginning to pound.

“No, the police that worked the case and forensics said there was evidence of her being in the car but they never actually found her. Why do you need all this anyway; the case is nearly ten years old?”

“I know but I had to check something,” said Sue biting her lip, “Danielle, do you think that the child, could have survived the crash?”

“Sue, I know you are the Queen of optimism but I don’t really think it’s possible.”

Sue sighed determined not to give up on the tiny piece of hope she had found, “But just say for instance that she had. How would you begin trying to track her down?”

“Sue…”

“Please Danielle, it’s very important.”

“Well I guess you could check on those websites; you know the ones designed to reunite children with their parents after adoption and things. But that’s not always a guarantee, if she did survive Sue, the chances are whoever found her hasn’t even told her she’s not biologically theirs and then you have to take into consideration that this all happened in England. It wouldn’t be easy.”

Danielle was right, the chances of Elayner having survived were virtually nothing. Besides, Jack would have already tried to look for her……..almost like a light bulb being turned on it came to her, Jack had no reason to look for her. The nurse told him that they were dead. He went to the memorial service for them but no one had told him they never found Elayner. Was there a chance that she was still alive, somewhere in the world?
“Thanks Danielle, oh there’s something else…..you have contacts in England don’t you?”

Sue couldn’t hear the tone of her voice but by the way the words appeared on her blackberry she could sense them, “Yeeeesssss, and why do I get the feeling I might have to use them?”

“Danielle, I need you to check if an Elayner Hudson has had any contact with MI5 or the police force over there?”

“Sue….”

“Please Danielle?”

“Ok, ok you know I’m a sucker for happy endings, I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.”

This is a lot for Jack to keep bottled up so tightly. I noticed that his parents know, but that he chose to withhold this from the team, apparently even Bobby. It's good that he told Sue. Keep posting, please.

I just found this story, and - although it started out very sad - I like a refreshingly new angle to a relationship between Jack and Sue.

I guess there is a good possibility that the girl is still alive, somewhere in England. But that would mean Jack has a 16-year old daughter!!! ohmy.gif

I know I said this story would have some angst in it but this is a Christmas challenge after all...I couldn't let it end sadly!!!

**********************
Sue flipped her lap top shut; she stretched slowly and ran her fingers through her hair. Flopping backwards on to the couch she sighed. She’d spent the last seven hours searching hundreds of websites but she had found nothing. Sue began to see the small piece of hope that she found earlier edge slowly away.

It was ridiculous….the chances of finding her were minute and the chances of her surviving the crash in the first place were even smaller. “Please God help me, if Elayner is out there help me to find her.”

Her train of thought was interrupted by a soft paw on her leg. Smiling sadly at the golden her heart began to beat ferociously as Levi nuzzled the blackberry. Darting quickly towards it she answered.

“Hey Sue, are you ready for this, I think you had better sit down.” Sue’s stomach lurched as she desperately tried to calm herself. “I contacted MI5 and apart from being on file as the daughter of Amy and Jack Hudson, they had nothing on Elayner Hudson. They tried all their databases but nothing came up.

I then went on to Scotland Yard and this is where it gets interesting. Five weeks ago an organization known as Family Ties contacted the Chief of Police there; they were seeking any record of Jack and Amy Hudson.”

“Was it Elayner?” Sue could hardly breathe, the anticipation had her feeling sick.

“They don’t know so I called the head office of Family Ties. This organization works with young people and parents to reunite them if they have been separated at birth or lost each other because of adoption; they also do a lot of over seas work. Anyway, I spoke to the lady in charge and she told me that hey do have an Elayner Bishop on record.”

“But Danielle her name is Hudson!”

“I know, Bishop is the name she gave them as the name she currently uses..............but on file…………….it’s Hudson…………………Sue are you ok?”

Sue’s breath was shaky, did she understand right, “Are you sure Danielle, are sure its Elayner?”

“I’m certain. Everything matches up, besides the name and the fact that she knows who her parents were…………..her date of birth also matches that of the MI5 records. It’s her Sue.”

***************************

The pain seared through her ears as the plane ascended then finally leveled off. After the conversation with Danielle, Sue had contacted Family Ties herself and arranged to meet with them and Elayner. After a painfully hard decision she decided not to tell Jack what was going on; although trying to explain away three days emergency leave was a little difficult especially as they were now becoming so close and spending so much time together.

Leaving with the excuse that she was needed to help one of her friends with a personal project, Jack had driven her to the airport. She was quite pleased with the excuse she had given him; she certainly hadn’t lied.

Sue had never felt so nervous as when she walked into the office at Family Ties. A tall middle aged lady with a neat bun and glasses greeted her from behind a desk. To the left of her sat a young girl. Sue didn’t need any more confirmation that the person sitting in front of her was Jack’s daughter. She was exactly how she pictured his daughter would be; thick black curls of hair fell loosely over her back and shoulders and deep brown eyes shone from her face. It still mesmerized her now, as she sat watching her in the seat adjacent to hers how someone could look so much like their father.

“Sue,” Elayner touched her arm. “Thank you, I know I’ve already said it but you have no idea what kind of gift you’ve given me.” A small tear escaped and slipped down her cheek. Signing thank you, Sue smiled. She was so scarily like Jack; even the way she made such a conscious effort to enter her world. They had only known each other two days and already Elayner had picked up several signs.

“Elayner, how did you survive that crash and where have you been living these last ten years. I’m sorry, I don’t expect you tell me…. I simply wondered but…”

Elayner smiled softly, “Its ok Sue I want to tell you. I don’t know how I got out of the car but all I remember is running. The fire was so hot and the smoke stung my eyes. I was so scared so I just ran. I really don’t remember them finding me but for the next ten years I lived with Mr and Mrs Bishop. They were an elderly couple without children.”

“Why didn’t they contact child services?”

“I didn’t know at the time, all I knew was that I was safe and they told me that Mummy and Daddy had gone to help the angels and that they would always be watching over me. It was only several years ago that they showed me the newspaper cuttings. According to the papers there were no surviors of the crash…..”

“…but what about your Dad and you for that matter?” Sue questioned.

“I guess because he was FBI and like you said, he went back to America shortly after so it was possible no one knew he was still alive…at least not the papers. As for me, Mr and Mrs Bishop assumed that both my parents were dead so they decided they would give me all the love and support that I needed and they did.

When Mrs Bishop died last year Mr Bishop decided that he would make enquiries into my family. Being only 16 I still needed a legal guardian and he wanted to make sure I was taken care of should anything happen to him.….I guess he didn’t think he would be around for much longer.” Sue handed her a tissue as she tried to continue, “We contacted Family Ties when Mr Bishop was hospitalized about five weeks ago and submitted all of my information to them. All I could do was pray that they would find my grandparents or aunties and uncles…………………... I had no idea I would be getting my Dad back.” She broke down into tearful sobs as Sue hugged her tightly.

“I’m just so glad we found you,” Sue smiled wiping away the tears from Elayner’s face with her tissue.

“So am I Mo……Sue, I don’t have to have seen my Dad for the last ten years to realize that you must be more than his friend and if we’re going to be a family together I was wondering if I could…well if I could call you Mom?”

Sue was so shocked but so deeply touched as well. “I will always love my real Mom Sue but if she thought I could find someone that I cared for as much as I cared about her, I know she wouldn’t mind.”

Sue swallowed back the tears as she nodded, “Of course you can…” she whispered. Elayner threw her arms around her. “Thank you.”

Sue felt the pressure change instantly as the plane hit the ground. She had arranged with Jack before she left that he would pick her up. Her heart jumped to her throat and her stomach flipped and spun as she slipped Elayner’s arm in hers and called for Levi to follow them to pick up their luggage. Grabbing their two bags they headed for the exit.

Sue could feel the adrenaline race through her, her heart pounding, the distance between the luggage pick up and Jack seemed miles. Finally, through the swarms of people on their way to families for Christmas, she spotted him. They’re eyes locked instantly and she could tell he had not yet spotted Elayner but as the crowd began to thin she watched his eyes sweep from hers to the girl by her side.

“It’s not possible,” he breathed, his breathing erratic and a sweat breaking out over his entire body, “Elayner?” There was no mistake; it was her, the hair, the eyes, even her smile, his daughter, his precious little girl stood before him only meters away. “Elayner,” he sobbed as ran towards her.

“Dad!” she cried dropping her bags and running forward only to be swirled around and hugged so tightly she could barley breathe. She clung to him, never wanting to let go and Jack was only to happy to oblige.

Sue stood and watched from a distance not wanting to intrude. Her smile broken by some escaped tears. “Thank you God.”

12 months later (those of you who have read some of my stories know I love epilogues!!!!)

The Christmas tree twinkled with lights and boxes wrapped in colorful paper and tied with decorative bows and string piled beneath. The fire crackled peacefully and bathed the room in a warm glow. The radio sang sweet Christmas songs as Elayner bounced her six week old step sister on her knee while Sue cradled the other twin in her arms.

Jack stood in the doorway and surveyed the scene. He could never be happier than he was now. All of the team had welcomed Elayner with so much love and when Sue and he had got married he had actually shed a few tears in front of Bobby. Now here he was and he could not be happier or more at peace than with Sue and his three precious daughters.

The music from the radio awakening his senses he smiled to himself as he allowed the melody to carry through the air and listened to the song he had been unable to listen to for years. Joining his family by the fire they all joined in the festive Christmas song.

Oh the weather outside is frightful
But the fire is so delightful
And since we've no place to go
Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

It must have been emotional to write sometimes, but it was a wonderful story. As you, I love epilogues! It gives me a feeling of looking into the future of the people who have grown very familiar over the course of a story.

Very well done, Cheeky, and in so little time! Any chance of a sequel?

I always thought that if you managed to make yourself cry, then you wrote the perfect scene!
