She pulled away for a moment, gasping for air. “Now I know what that meant,” she murmured, the phrase “much needed oxygen” now clearly defined beyond all question. Eager to experience all that she had read, her lips coursed heatedly across his neck, tracing a path outlined in detail in Chapter 5, only made much easier by the absence of cumbersome buttons and material. She found the dip just above his collarbone, swirling her tongue in the recess before continuing a thorough exploration of the expanse of chest before her.
“Sue!” gasped Jack, reeling from how quickly a kiss expressing relief of finding a lost love alive had ignited into an inferno...an inferno on the verge of consuming everything in its path. Not knowing if it was experience, instinct, or something he had just read, he laced his fingers in her hair and gave a gentle but firm tug, pulling her face back to his. “Sue,” he whispered, waiting for her eyes to focus on his lips. Reluctantly, she yielded to his hands, allowing her focus to slowly slide from a heaving chest to lips that twitched in a nervous, anxious sort of way. The slight wetting of them with the tip of his tongue intrigued her, and she leaned closer, studying them in the dim light with darkened eyes. For a moment, they remained kneeling, facing each other as they had when he had pulled himself up through the escape door to come face to face with her, and arms and lips had found him before he could even utter a word.
“Jack,” she whispered, her eyes meeting his for a fleeting moment. “I love you.” With every ounce and fiber of her being, she threw herself against the warmth of his bare skin, anxious to once again feel the heat of his body pressing through the sheer material of her blouse. His reaction to her was instantaneous; a response filled with love, incredulous joy, and in part, meant to steady his balance. His arms wrapped around her quickly, an act which further encouraged her heated pursuit. Before he could stop it, he was tumbling backwards, with Sue locked in his arms.
“Look out!” The cherub choir gasped.
The elevator shook with a reverberating thud. “Jack!”

“Over here! Hurry!” Adrenaline in overdrive, Bobby raced down the hall with five firefighters bustling behind him, ropes and spotlights in tow. He whipped off his sport coat and handed it to a teary-eyed Tara, pausing only long enough to stroke her cheek with the tips of his fingers. “It’ll be all right, luv. We’ll get her.”
“I know. An ambulance is on the way.” She watched helplessly as Bobby and a tall captain dropped ropes that the four other firemen anchored between themselves. Myles shoved a spotlight into place, sending a bright stream of light into the abyss below.
“Now what do we do? We finally have them together and a rescue crew shows up!” Marene fluttered anxiously in place, wings beating triple time.
“Take it easy, hummingbird.” Trecey turned to Gabby. “Sue needs to call them off. Tell her!”
Glassy-eyed, Gabby looked helplessly at the hovering troop. “J-J-J.”
“Enough phonics practice! Get down there and talk to her!” Pammie plucked the chattering cherub up by the arm and with the help of the others, flew her into the elevator car.
“Let’s cover her eyes.” Grace took her crimson ribbon scarf and fastened it around Gabby’s head. “Now talk!”
Lucy’s eyes nearly bulged out of her head when she heard the voice on the other end of the line. “Bobby! Stop! She’s okay! He found her...or she found him...or whatever. But they’re together!” Her face lit up with excitement as she hung up the phone. “Thanks guys. Sorry about the false alarm. You can go, now.”
The captain walked himself up out of the entrance and after releasing his harness, stared down at the rotor. “You mean to tell me that instead of having someone lying at the bottom of the shaft, you now have two people stuck in an elevator, and you don’t want our help?”
“Yep, I mean nope, I mean...” She was beginning to know what Sue felt like when she stared into Jack’s eyes for too long. These were a lethal shade of green, and the more she gazed into them, the more she began to feel weak at the knees.
“She means we have the situation under control.” Myles wrapped a guarding arm around her waist, pulling her close against him. “Until the whereabouts of Thomas was ascertained, we dared not start the cars moving. Now that we know she is in capable hands...”
“Well take it from here, mates,” interrupted Bobby, dropping a wink in Tara’s direction after raising an eyebrow in Myles’. He had caught the change of intonation in the baritone’s voice and the slight pulsation of the hand splayed across Lucy’s stomach. Capable hands, eh? You’re not wasting any time, my man.
The captain eyed the four agents and shook his head. “Okay, boys. Gather everything up and let’s get out of here.” He cast a sidelong glance at Lucy, as if he were going to say something. But, seeing a second arm now firmly wrapped around her, he turned and walked away.
“The elevator...it’s not really working is it?” Lucy questioned, extracting herself slowly from arms that reluctantly released her from their hold.
Bobby stared at the buttons and shrugged his shoulders. “Can’t see any reason to find out just yet. Can you?” He pulled a roll of yellow crime scene tape from the pocket of his sport coat, now thoroughly rumpled, courtesy of Tara. “Thank you, luv.” In no time, a few strips of plastic and tape guarded the entrance. “Lunch, anyone?”

“Kiss me, Jack. Really kiss me,” she sighed against his lips. “I’m not going to break,” she added, recognizing his hesitancy but not understanding it.
“I recognize those words! That’s right from the book!” gasped Gabby, wrenching red material from her eyes.
“Sue,” Jack uttered.
“That’s not right! He’s not supposed to talk. He’s supposed to kiss her in an all consuming kiss...send her senses reeling...sweep her away. Look it’s right here on page 54!” Gabby fingers flew furiously through the pages of the novel.
“I think he’s on a different page in a different book,” lamented Marene, shaking her head sadly.
He hadn’t drawn away, but the response from Jack was much less ardent than it had been when he and Sue were on top of the elevator car. Now he kissed her softly, deliberately keeping the kiss light. He smiled into her mouth when she stamped her foot and pounded his back in frustration.
“He’s doing Kav! Only he has it out of context! He supposed to be seducing her with that kiss, not revering here!” Grace rolled her eyes and floated to the handrail, tugging at her locks in complete frustration.
“That’s it!” Pammie’s eyes lit with understanding. “Look around you!”
“What? Other than feeling like we’re on the inside of a grape...” Trecey suddenly burst out laughing, pulling a red arrow from the scanty collection that remained. “I plum forgot about Gabby’s goof!” Before anyone could stop her, the pointed projectile sailed perfectly across the elevator, piercing its target and disappearing with a poof.
“What’d I miss?” Marene asked, still attempting to fathom how Jack could have so quickly changed in his behavior. “One minute he’s falling head over heels for her...right through the escape door, mind you, and the next, he’s kissing her like...like...”
“Like he should be!” Gabby sighed, falling into Pammie’s waiting arms. “See.” She held open the book, comparing the sight in front of her to eloquently written words:
His restraint snapped as his lips settled against hers in an all consuming kiss. Her senses were reeling as she clung to him to keep from being totally swept away. He skillfully nipped at her lips, causing her to gasp, giving him deeper access which he took and she allowed. He eased the kiss a bit as he felt her responding, gentling it into a shared experience, letting her explore as much as he did. He reluctantly slid his lips from hers as the need for oxygen intruded but refused to surrender all contact. He kissed his way across a silky smooth cheek and nuzzled his face in the hollow of her neck.
“I love you, Sue Thomas, more than anything in the world, more than my heart can hold, more than...”
Her lips silenced his. Talking could wait.

“This had better work, or they’re going to have to live in that elevator!” Grace nervously handed the last purple arrow to Trecey. “...Or get arrested for indecent behavior in a public place. Lucky for us this landed tip up, although explaining to Charlene why I need a new bow will be tricky. Never knew they could shatter like that. Have anything chocolate on you?”
“No one’s done an elevator drop with one before...not that you could help it. And no. Sorry. Gabby inhaled the last turtle right before she passed out.”
“Oh, yeah. I forgot.” Grace watched the elevator lights change as it moved up to their level. “Okay, when the doors open, you’ll have to get at an angle so you hit them both. Maybe they’ll be holding hands. That’d sure make it easier.”
Trecey nodded, keeping her eyes focused on the center slit of the doors. A soft ding announced the arrival of the car. The doors parted, paused, and then opened fully. String drawn taut and one eye closed, Trecey held her breath, waiting for the perfect moment to release Respect.
When no one emerged, Grace quickly flitted in, checking the corners. She returned with a look of panic on her face. “We’re so toast!”
The elevator was empty.
