She entered her apartment and switched on the lights; she hung up her coat and switched on her computer. She opened her Internet browser and began to search; her romantic experiences had been limited and not at all successful. If she wanted to finally achieve her dreams she needed to be prepared, surely there was advice out there to help catch the man of your dreams? She entered her search information and waited a few seconds for the engine to list the results, she let out a low whistle, she hadn’t realised that romance on the net was so popular, it was going to take her ages to work her way through this. She clicked on the first result and began to read, making notes in her notepad as she read.

She entered the bullpen at 8.45am, fifteen minutes late. Her colleagues looked at her with confusion; it was not like her to be late at all. “Morning,” she said sheepishly as she hung her coat on her peg and sat at her desk, quickly switching on her computer.
“Have a hot date, last night?” Bobby asked his voice laced with curiosity.
“Maybe,” she replied nervously, one of the websites had promised that jealousy was a good way of getting the object of your affection’s attention.
Bobby frowned, “Well I hope he treated you right, because if not he’ll have me and my friends to answer to.”
She smiled at his protectiveness, now if she could only work on that and get him to realise she is the other half of his soul. “I’ll keep that in mind, thanks.”
Their conversation was halted as D entered the bullpen, waving his hand before speaking, “Okay, folks, our chance to catch up with paperwork has passed, we have a new case and it’s a priority.”
~*~*~*~
D stood in front of the whiteboard and pinned up a photograph of a young couple, he turned back to his team who had gathered in front of him, “This is Carrie Walker and her husband Mike; they were reported missing by her mother this morning. They haven’t been seen for the last forty eight hours.”
“We don’t usually work missing persons cases, why is this one so important?” Jack asked curiously.
D turned back to the board and pinned up a second picture of a different couple, “Janet Smith and her husband John; they disappeared exactly a year ago. Their bodies were found on Valentine’s Day 2005, they had been bound together and left in Rock Creek park.” D paused and pinned a third picture to the board, “Jenny Kavanaugh and her husband Richard, they disappeared early February 2005 and their bodies were found in Dumbarton Park on February 16th.”
“So we have a serial killer that doesn’t like the month of February?” Bobby asked.
“Another closet February hater,” Tara muttered under her breath.
“Sorry, Tara,” Myles stated, “I couldn’t hear what you said.”
Tara flushed, “I just said that, that sounds like a theory, someone who doesn’t like romance in February.”
“Do we have any connections between the victims?” Jack asked.
“There is one thing that links all of the couples and one of the reasons why our team has been selected to work the case, the husband in each couple was Australian.”
All eyes on the team turned to Bobby who grinned, “I feel like I’m going to be used as bait.”
“Australian beefcake bait!” Lucy teased.
D smiled, “Well there aren’t many agents within the building who have an Australian accent at hand, in fact in Washington you’re it. So I’m afraid Bobby you are one half of the bait.”
“Who is the lucky woman who gets to be my wife, I guess the wives were U.S. citizens and not Australian?”
“Well, this is where the wives occupations come into play,” D continued. “Janet, Jenny and Carrie were all employees of Buckby, Randolf and Crane.”
“And they specialise in?” Myles asked, the name of the firm ringing a bell in his memory.
“Website design,” D explained and smiled at Tara. “They all worked from home, creating websites for their company’s clients.”
Bobby grinned, “Looks like you’re the lucky woman, Tara.”
She nodded, flushing, she knew she wanted to get closer to observe him, but she hadn’t anticipated on getting this close so soon. “Lucky, me,” she replied, hoping that the rest of the team hadn’t noticed the warmth in her cheeks.
D grinned, “If you would both like to follow me, I have your cover, house and rings awaiting you, Mr. and Mrs. Manning. Jack and Sue I would like you to speak with Carrie’s Mom, see if she reported anything unusual. Myles, you, Lucy and I will be carrying out background checks. Tara, we’ll be sending Carrie’s computer your way, for you to analyse. Okay, people lets get to work.”
She returned to her desk and placed her pencil and notebook on it, and then followed Bobby to D’s office. Bobby held the door open for her and she entered, taking the seat D gestured to, she sat and nervously began to fiddle with the hem of her jacket, the undercover operation had not been part of her plan, she’d have to do some serious thinking about how to incorporate it successfully. Role play was fun, but it couldn’t be considered the foundations of a perfect romance.
“Tara,” D said for the third time, there was something not quite right with her today, she wasn’t her usual sparky self. “Tara,” he said more forcefully and she jumped at the sound of her name, flushing with embarrassment.
“Sorry, I was thinking about the case,” she replied sheepishly.
“That’s okay, now that I have your full attention, here’s your cover information.” He handed each of them a brown manila file, “You met eighteen months ago, when Bobby contacted your firm for a website designer, you married six months ago and have just bought a house in Takoma Park. Bobby you are a partner in a trading corporation, dealing with the import of Australian goods into the U.S. You make most of your sales through your company’s website.”
“That sounds like a plausible cover story,” Bobby stated flicking through the file.
“How did you sell it to Buckby, Randolf and Crane that I’ve been an employee for eighteen months?” Tara asked.
“Well that was the easy part, Ronald Buckby was an ex agent who retired five years ago, worked in cyber crimes when it first became something to worry about. He came to us when the third couple disappeared; he manages the website design side of the business and has managed to alter records to show that you have been in employment since January 2004. He is your one contact within the business; he’s the only one who knows your true history.”
“How can you be sure he isn’t involved?” she asked.
“There are no guarantees, Tara. However, S.O.G will be paying particular attention to his movements and Myles and I will certainly be going through his recent history with a fine toothed comb. But I think if he is involved it wouldn’t be the best move to invite the F.B.I to play, would it?”
“I guess not,” she allowed.
“Now, when do my lovely wife and I get to move in?” Bobby was enjoying the assignment, usually Jack and Sue got the pleasure of undercover work, well the married variety. It made a pleasant change for him to get the opportunity to work undercover, especially with Tara, although she had been acting rather strangely today. Perhaps she wasn’t so keen to be working with him; that thought didn’t settle well with him.
“The house is currently vacant, it’s one we’ve used before and it’s located in the same area of D.C. that the other couples lived in,” D explained.
“Do we have any suspects at all?” Bobby asked.
“There has got to be a common denominator, other than the fact that the husbands were Australian and the wives web designers. I have a feeling the more we dig the more we’ll discover. Now I suggest you both head home and collect everything you’re going to need for the next couple of weeks.”
“Couple of weeks?” Tara asked.
“Yes, couple of weeks. If we haven’t tempted him by February the 14th then I guess we’ll have to try again next year as our window of opportunity will have passed.” D stood and opened his desk drawer, “I got these from Randy,” he opened a small black box which contained two gold bands, “He wants me to remind you they’re the property of the F.B.I and if you should lose them they’ll be deducted from your salaries.”
“He has a way with words, doesn’t he? We’d better guard these with our lives, Tara,” Bobby said, plucking the rings from the box and turning towards Tara. She looked at him with a deer in the headlights look as he reached for her hand and slid the ring on her finger, “I guess that makes you Mrs. Manning.”
She nodded, her voice completely gone, this situation had not been mentioned on any of the sites she’d searched last night. Operation Manhunt had taken a surprising and rather unsettling turn, her observations of her target had suddenly gone into undercover mode. She was an agent; she could handle this new development.
She watched as Bobby slid the remaining ring on his finger, he then held out his arm to her, “Are you ready, Mrs. Manning?”
She nodded, “Okay, Mr. Manning.”
D grinned as he watched them leave his office, something was in the air, it was reminiscent of Sue and Jack and thank goodness that had finally been resolved; they were happily engaged and not even as part of an undercover assignment, this time it was for real.

The characters demanded a plot! They didn't just want plain fuzzies!
Although an undercover operation does leave room for fun, doesn't it?
I guess Tara will be able to get up close and very personal with her Target, won't she!
More tomorrow!
