He sat by her side as she slept her hand firmly in his. As he sat there he thought about how close he had come to losing her that day. He also thought about Jack’s speech and he tried to imagine what it was like for Tara, sitting in the surveillance van watching and waiting, seeing everything unfold, but other than speaking to the team, not able to do anything concrete if a problem arose. He likened it to the uselessness that he had felt sitting in Jack’s car watching his friends rescue her. The only tangible thing he could do whilst he waited was pray and as he sat in Jack’s car he had had a very in depth conversation with God.

A sigh from Tara interrupted his thoughts, “It’s okay, love, I’m here,” he whispered.

“Bobby?” she asked sleepily.

“Yep, it’s me. Now rest, love, because they’re going to move you to another room soon.”

“Don’t leave me,” she whispered, her hand grasping his as she snuggled down into her pillow.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he promised, kissing the back of her hand.

~*~*~*~

She had finally been transferred to another room and the nurses on the floor appeared to be very accommodating, not insisting that Bobby should leave.

He had taken up his vigil by the side of her bed, watching her sleep. Doctor Green had stopped by and checked on her briefly. He had reiterated that when she finally woke up she’d have an incredible headache and probably wouldn’t feel like moving around for a few days.

The sound of the door opening roused Bobby from his thoughts.

“Hey, Crash. How is she?” Jack asked as he entered the room, followed by Sue.

“She’s still sleeping, Doctor Green said that the longer she sleeps the better her headache will be,” Bobby replied.

“Sue and I are going back to the bullpen, we’ll be back later, is there anything either of you need?”

Bobby thought for a moment,” Would you mind stopping at Tara’s apartment on the way back for some things, especially her pyjamas, as I don’t think she’s going to enjoy wearing the standard hospital issue gown.”

Jack smiled, “Sue and I will stop by and collect some things for her.”

“Is it him?” Bobby asked quietly.

“D and Myles returned to interrogate Mr. Jacobi as soon as they knew Tara was going to be alright. D called a few minutes ago. Thomas Jacobi admitted everything, he also told us where to find Carrie and her husband,” Jack explained.

“Are they still alive?” Bobby asked his voice laced with hope.

Jack shook his head, “No D and Myles sent a team to where Jacobi had left them. They had been dead for a few days. We’ll know more after the autopsies. Mr. Jacobi will be going to prison for a long time. It sounds like he was relieved to have been caught; I think his actions were beginning to catch up with him. I think he’d had enough pain and sorrow and didn’t want to inflict it on anyone else anymore.”

“What about his dog?” Bobby asked, remembering the Golden Retriever being led from their back yard after Jacobi’s capture.

Sue smiled, “Enjoying, Levi’s company at the moment with Lucy at the bullpen. I think it will be hard to put her in the pound, she’s a lovely dog.”

“Maybe she won’t have to go,” Bobby said quietly. “Sue will you look after her until we get out of here?”

“Of course, why?” Sue asked curiously.

“I think Tara and I would look good with a dog, don’t you?” he smiled warmly, remembering one of his conversations with Tara over the weekend when she mentioned as a child she’d always wanted a dog and how much she enjoyed playing with Levi.

Sue smiled, “Yes and you’ll make Levi’s year he’ll have another friend to play with.”

Bobby and Jack chuckled at the thought of Levi with a girlfriend.

~*~*~*~

It was several hours later before Tara began to wake up, she opened her eyes slowly and then shut them again as the light of the room caused sharp pains to stab into her brain, “Shut off the lights,” she whispered, her throat dry and sore.

She heard Bobby move and then his voice, “They’re off now, love,” she felt him grasp her hand again.

She tried again and opened her eyes slowly, the darkness in the room made it a little easier to focus, the shooting pains she had felt before were not as intense, in the gloom of the room she could make out Bobby’s silhouette, he was leaning towards her, her hand still enveloped in his. “Hi,” she whispered a small smile on her face.

“Hi,” he replied, “How are you feeling?”

She paused trying to think of how to explain the pain in her head, “I feel like there’s someone hitting my head with a very large hammer, if I don’t move the pains not too bad.”

“The Doctor said you’re going to have a bad headache for a few days, but that’ll be the only side effect from the drugs you were given,” he explained gently.

“Drugs?” she asked, trying to remember what had happened.

“Yeah, I think your special agent senses were off, Jacobi made his move this afternoon.”

“He did? I don’t remember seeing him…” she paused as an image of a dog filtered into her mind. “I remember a dog.”

“That’s how he got in, love. He said his dog was in our yard, you opened the door and he injected you with something. The SOG team saw you go down, they alerted us.”

“Hmm, I remember something, but it’s not very clear.”

“Try not to worry about it, love it will come back to you when you’re ready,” he replied stroking her hand.

She smiled and as she did, a myriad of pain went through her head. “I don’t think I’ll smile again for a while, it hurts too much.”

Bobby reached out and stroked her forehead with his fingers, moving them in slow delicate circles, “You’ve got plenty of time to smile, you rest. I’m going to take you home tomorrow and I’ll be making sure you have everything you need.”

“You’re going to look after me?”

“Yes, love, I’m not going anywhere until you’re feeling better, this is a partnership, you’d do the same for me.”

“I love you,” she whispered as she closed her eyes the welcome release of slumber calling her.

“I love you, too,” he replied, his fingers still caressing her forehead.

Jack walked with Sue, Lucy had taken home Levi and his new friend earlier and they had promised they would help with the new addition to their family after stopping by to check on Bobby and Tara.

As they walked Jack’s mind kept returning to Bobby and that afternoon, he realised that he would have felt just like Bobby if it had been Sue in the house instead of Tara. He also realised that he’d wasted far too much time, tomorrow was never a certainty. As they entered Tara’s apartment Jack decided he couldn’t wait another moment, he reached out and gently touched Sue’s shoulder, she turned to look at him, a questioning look on her face.

“Is there something wrong, Jack?” she asked, noticing the strange look that had taken over his face.

He nervously rubbed his hands together and then inhaled deeply before beginning to speak, “Sue, we’ve known each other a long time, haven’t we?”

She nodded, confused as to why he needed to travel down memory lane now.

“Today made me think,” he paused, his mind desperately trying to find the words he so desperately needed to speak.

“Think about what?” Sue prompted gently.

“Us.”

“Us?”

“Yes, Sue us,” he closed the distance between them and gently grasped one of her hands in his own. He pulled her hand towards his chest and placed it over the place where he thought his heart was. “When you walked into my life nearly four years ago, you captured a small part of my heart, as I’ve grown to know you more and more of my heart has stopped belonging to me,” he smiled. “In fact, Sue all of my heart now belongs to you. I’ve realised that I’ve wasted far too much time circling my feelings for you, hiding away from you, but today made me realise that you can never be sure that you’ll see tomorrow, you have to live today. I don’t want to spend another day without you, Sue, you’re the reason I wake up in the morning, your smile brightens my day and your heart is beautiful.” He noticed a tear escaping Sue’s eye, he gently released her hand and wiped the tear away from her cheek before beginning to sign as he spoke, “Sue Thomas, you are the light of my world. I love you.”

She was lost for words, Jack’s speech had been filled with passion and love, the last part signed as well as spoken, the signs whirring in her head, he had said he loved her, was she dreaming? “You love me?” she asked nervously, scared that she had misread everything and maybe she had been confused.

He grinned, “Yes Sue Thomas, I Jack Hudson love you.”

She smiled, her heart soaring with his confession, she’d spent years dreaming of this moment, never sure if she would ever get the chance to read those words tumbling from his lips. At that moment words failed her so she decided to sign, “I love you,” she signed, her face lit with one of the most beautiful smiles Jack had ever seen.

Jack closed the distance between them further and gently placed his hands on her cheeks, pulling her head towards him, slowly he moved his lips over hers, placing the most gentlest of kisses on them. To his delight she returned his kiss, gently moving her lips against his. Falling into the kiss and the desire for the woman before him, he gently asked to deepen the kiss, within moments she opened her lips allowing him to kiss her with every part of his heart and soul. The world around them melted away, lost in the other’s arms and finally declaring their love.

~*~*~*~

They entered Tara’s room to find Bobby still keeping watch at her bedside, he’d fallen asleep his head resting against the edge of her bed, his hand still encircled around Tara’s smaller one.

Jack signed to Sue so that they didn’t disturb them, “Bags we leave there.”

Sue nodded in agreement.

“Both them sleep, need rest. Tomorrow phone me, check Tara ok.”

Sue signed back, “Agree me. Go home now check dogs Lucy.”

Jack nodded and took Sue’s hand in his leading them both out of Tara’s hospital room, they still had more to talk about when they got home.

~*~*~*~

The next time she woke up the sun was shining through the window, she squinted to remove some of the pain of the light in her eyes, but the pain wasn’t as bad as it had been the day before. She slowly moved her head, looking for Bobby, she could feel his hand still holding hers, and finally she saw the outline of his body leaning against the bed. His back rising and falling as he breathed deeply, he had fallen asleep. She didn’t want to wake him, so she closed her eyes again, the darkness appealing.

~*~*~*~

She heard movement in the room and opened her eyes, a friendly looking nurse was checking her IV, “Morning, sweetie, decided to join us, did you?” the nurse said cheerily.

Tara smiled, “Yes, I feel much better,” she replied, thinking that her head only had a dull ache instead of a dancing brigade of elephants she’d experienced the day before.

“Well, Doctor Green will be in to check on you shortly and then you and your fine young man will be able to go home. You do realise he hasn’t left your side since you came here, don’t you?” The nurse asked quietly as she checked Tara’s pulse.

Tara smiled, “I’m really lucky, aren’t I?”

“Yes, sweetie, there aren’t many women who have their partners spend the entire night next to them in a very uncomfortable chair. I bet when he wakes up he’s stiff,” she chuckled quietly.

“Well that will make two of us with aches and pains, he’ll be able to empathise.”

“That he will, sweetie. Now I’m going to remove your IV, it might sting a little but you don’t need it anymore. If you’re lucky your breakfast will be here shortly, if you’re given the choice I’d take the cereal. The chef doesn’t seem to have mastered the art of scrambled eggs yet.”

Tara giggled.

“What?” the nurse asked, curious about what had made Tara laugh.

“Scrambled eggs must be a difficult dish to master because I know someone else who can’t cook them, either,” she replied nodding towards Bobby’s sleeping form.

“Well I’d say cooking’s the least of his worries, he has so many other things to worry about at the moment and I’d say you’re top of his list.”

Tara’s smile faded slightly, “I guess I’ve given him a pretty scary few hours.”

“But he’ll get over it, sweetie, you’re still here and I understand you’re getting married next week.”

Tara’s smiled widened, “Yes, we’re getting married on Valentine’s day.”

“How romantic,” the nurse replied filling in the information on Tara’s chart.

“He is, isn’t he?”

“Well, sweetie you get your rest, because as soon as the doctor discharges you and your fiancé will be on your way home. Don’t’ forget, plenty of rest, especially if you want to enjoy your wedding!” The nurse replied before heading out of the door.

~*~*~*~

The Doctor had left half an hour ago and Tara was getting herself dressed as Bobby waited nervously in the corridor. She hadn’t realised how difficult it was getting dressed her fingers felt as though they were inside a thick pair of gloves, manipulating buttons and zips was incredibly difficult. Eventually after what seemed like an eternity she was finally ready. “Bobby!” she called and waited for him to enter.

“Are you alright, love?” he asked through a crack in the door,

“I’m fine, in fact I’m more than fine I’m ready to go home,” she called.

The door opened wider, “Okay then, let’s go,” he replied taking her arm with one hand and her bag with the other.

There may even be another part tonight! biggrin.gif Depends how I get on with the typing part... it's quite hard to type with my dog in desperate need of hugs, but we're getting there, bless her she had an op today and I think I'll be keeping her company all night, so there might be plenty of typing opportunities, in between comfort. Although that will depend if I can type when suffering from sleep deprivation!

Take care,

Tara twirled in the dress looking at how the skirt flowed around her, she grinned. It was perfect, she stepped out of the dressing room and stood before her two best friends, the smiles that danced across her face helped her to make the decision; this was the dress.

“Wow!” Lucy said as she admired her friend’s dress, “Bobby’s not going to believe his eyes when you walk down the aisle wearing that dress.

Tara grinned, “Well that would be a good reaction as long as he can keep coherent thought until the ceremony’s finished!”

“I’m sure Jack will keep him focused on the task at hand,” Sue promised.

“Well,” Tara started, “this is the last thing on our wedding list, I guess we’re as ready as we’re ever going to be.”

Lucy grinned, “It’s going to be a perfect day, I promise. Although it’s a shame your parents and Bobby’s can’t come.”

Tara smiled, “Well at least we’re going to visit them for our honeymoon, a long weekend with my parents an then two weeks in Australia with Bobby’s. So I think we’ll both get to know each other’s parents.”

“We’re going to miss you both,” Lucy said quietly.

“It’s only for three weeks, Lucy and then we’ll be back and apparently still on the same team. Jack checked it out for us there’s definitely no rule against inter unit marriage just dating, and the Assistant Director is happy for us to trial the situation and if there are no downsides to the trial the inter unit dating policy is history,” Tara explained.

“Way to go Jack!” Lucy exclaimed.

February 14th 2006

Tara ran her hands down the skirt of her dress, flattening out any creases; she looked at herself in the mirror, and smiled. She looked just how she imagined she would as a child, like a beautiful fairy princess ready to capture her prince’s heart forever. Well she’d already found her prince and captured his heart, but shortly she would be making a promise to keep and care for his heart forever and she couldn’t wait.

A knock on the door interrupted her and she called, “Come in.”

The door opened and in walked D, a smile crossing his face as he admired Tara in her dress, “Are you ready?” he asked, walking over to her and offering her his arm.

“As I’ll ever be, is everyone in there?” she asked as the butterflies in her stomach began to flutter furiously.

“Okay then, Miss Williams let’s walk you down the aisle to your future,” he replied, placing her hand over his arm.

“Thank you, D,” she said quietly as she followed him out of the room at the back of the church.

“You’re more than welcome, Tara. I’m considering this a dress rehearsal for when Tanya finally gets to walk down the aisle, if of course there’s a young man out there who will meet my strict criteria for son in law material.”

Tara laughed, “I’m sure Bobby will feel the same way in the future when our daughter walks down the aisle.”

D laughed, “He doesn’t know what he’s letting himself in for, does he?”

Tara shook her head, “Neither of us do, but what we do know is that we love each other and I think that’s a good place to start.”

D smiled, “Tara that’s the perfect way to start, trust me.”

“I do, D, I do.”

The sound of the wedding march echoing around the church stopped their conversations, Lucy and Sue were waiting for them, dressed in matching pink dresses, and by their sides were Levi and Goldie, each holding a small wicker basket full of pink and white carnations in their mouths. They followed Tara and D as they began their journey down the aisle, Tara leaving behind her, her single life and embarking on a future with the man that had captured her heart.

As she walked down the aisle she became oblivious to their friends that sat in the pews of the church, her eyes had become focused on Bobby.

As the organist had begun to play he had turned to watch her walk towards him, his breath catching as he took in her beauty, he had never seen anything as wonderful as his Tara and the beautiful white dress that she was wearing. He couldn’t keep the grin he felt rising from within him crossing his face and he was quite sure there were several women in the congregation fanning themselves at the sight of his dimples, but he didn’t care, his eyes were firmly set on the woman who had captured his heart and completed his soul.

Finally she reached him, he grasped her hand tenderly and they turned to face the minister. The words the minister said were lost on her as she gazed into Bobby’s eyes, she could spend the rest of her life looking into his eyes, when you looked carefully they told you every feeling and emotion that he held and Tara knew they really were the windows to his soul.

Bobby and Tara exchanged their vows making promises to each other that they intended to keep forever, finally the moment came that they had both been waiting for, the time when the kissed for the first time as husband and wife. Bobby carefully lifted the veil from her face, finally giving him the opportunity to see her beautiful features clearly, then slowly he leaned towards her and his lips met with hers in the sweetest and most important kiss of their lives. Without intending to they deepened the kiss lost in the moment. The sound of clapping distracted them and reluctantly they pulled apart, not wanting to lose contact with the other, Bobby clasped her hand in his and they turned to their friends, huge smiles on their faces.

The minister pronounced, “I give you Mr. and Mrs. Manning.”

Another rapturous round of applause echoed through the church.

Together they walked back up the aisle, arm in arm ready to start their future together.

February 14th 2007

Bobby tenderly pushed the damp strand of hair away from her face and then he carefully leant forward and placed a tender kiss on her forehead. She looked even more beautiful and he was certain that he loved her even more than the day he’d married her, which was exactly one year ago today, he thought.

“Do you think Sue and Jack will mind that we will miss their wedding today?” Tara asked quietly, her breathing finally returning to normal.

“Tara, love, I don’t think they’ll mind at all, I guess as soon as the ceremony is over they’ll be straight over here checking on us."

Tara looked up into his eyes, “I’m sorry I couldn’t wait, I really wanted to be there today with them.”

“I know love, but some things have their own agenda and I think our little friend here certainly had her own agenda,” he replied, caressing the head of the small infant cradled in his wife’s arms. “She’s beautiful, just like her mother.”

Tara grinned and leaned upwards pressing a chaste kiss on his cheek, “She has her father’s eyes though and if she has his dimples as well there won’t be a man alive who’ll be able to resist her.”

Bobby shook his head, “They’ll have to get through me first,” he promised.

She giggled, “I remember D saying something similar to me on our wedding day, I guess it’s every father’s prerogative to protect their daughters.”

“Well I consider it one of my priorities along with protecting and caring for my beautiful wife,” he gently captured her lips in a gentle kiss. “Are you tired?” he asked as he noticed her yawn when their kiss ended.

“Well I have been in labour for the past twenty four hours and our daughter, impatient as she is certainly took her time in actually arriving, but I’m not sleepy, I just want to spend time with my new family before we’re surrounded by our friends. I want to get to know our daughter.”

Bobby smiled, “I like the sound of that and I didn’t realise I could love her so much already, we only met an hour ago.”

“I know I’ve had nearly nine months to get used to her coming, but still I can’t believe I’m a mom.”

“You’ll be the best mom a girl could want and she’ll have the best aunts and uncles too,” he replied thinking of their friends.

“And she’ll have the best father a girl could ask for, even one who can cook!” she exclaimed thinking back to just before they were married when Bobby had burned toast and eggs.

“I might have managed to cook a few things, but I’ll definitely be leaving her cookery education to you,” he promised, planting another kiss on his wife’s head.

“Tara pulled her daughter towards her, “Hope,” she whispered, “Your daddy is a wonderful man who will make sure you’re safe every day of your life. You’re a very lucky girl.”

Bobby beamed at Tara’s words and then continued with his own, “Your mommy is wonderful too and she can certainly make sure we both stay safe.”

Tara giggled, “She doesn’t know what she’s letting herself in for the daughter of two F.B.I agents. She could have a very interesting childhood.”

“That she may, but she’s going to be one of the most loved and cherished children in the world, because we created her from our love,” Bobby stated feeling a blush rise through his cheeks.

“Well may I suggest that we don’t create anything else for a few more months, because the pain I endured from this one will take a while for me to forget,” she teased gently.

“Okay, love whatever you say.”

She offered their daughter to him and he gratefully accepted her into his arms. Tara smiled with her entire being as she watched the man who’d captured her heart and soul hold their daughter. She giggled to herself as she thought of the brown manila file that sat on their bookshelves at home with the details she’d gathered during Operation Manhunt, without that file she might not have decided to make sure that the man of her dreams belonged to her forever. Fortunately he felt the same way.

February was certainly becoming one of her favourite months, not only did she marry the man of her dreams, but she now had the family of her dreams as well.

“What do you think Goldie’s going to make of her?” Bobby asked quietly.

“I’m sure she’s going to love her,” she replied knowing that their future together was going to be perfect, well as perfect as they could make it.

The end.
