“Agent Hudson …wait”, the operator alerted him. “A civilian call for you.”
“No time”, said Jack. “We're …”
“Sir, it's St. Andrews Hospital, they say it's an emergency, and insist on talking to you”, apologised the young man.
It better be important, thought Jack, as he snatched the headset from the operator.
“Hudson”, he barked.
The young agent concentrated on his task, avoiding looking at the more senior agents, as where Bobby and Myles were not hidden their curiosity. They grew worried as Jack began emitting only monosyllables, shaking his head in despair.
Distractedly he returned the handset to the operator.
“Mate, what's going on?”
“It's Sue …she was in an accident”, discarding his vest and grabbing his keys. “I need to go. You're in charge”, he delegated to no one in particular.
“What did that hospital say?” inquired Myles, after Jack simply stormed out of the van.
“Nothing else”, he answered uncomfortably. “They asked for special agent Jack Hudson.”
“I don't like it, mate”, addressing Myles. “Let's get that guy, then we can find out what the heck is going on with Sue.”
“And when did Jack leave you in charge?” questioned Myles. “We're not going in without backup”, unzipping his jacket.
“Jack said …”
“Jack's not here. This …doesn't add up”, pointing towards the warehouse.
“Leland, just because you couldn't find a damned lead on this case, and I did …”
“This isn't about you, Manning”, bellowed Myles. Both fuelled by Jack's expedited departure, they ignored the operator.
“Agents? Agents?” getting up and placing himself between the agents.
“That doesn't concern you, mate”, warned Bobby.
“No, but I thought you'd want to know two men just left the warehouse.”
“Why couldn't …”
“Why didn't …”
Both agents were now shouting at him, hurriedly gearing up again.
“Where to, mate?” his fingers gripping the door handle.
“West entrance, Sir”, the operator answered, undaunted by their earlier behaviour. He had been told Hudson's unit was special …though it wasn't exactly what he pictured.
After nodding at each other, Myles and Bobby dashed into the night.
Shortly after, the van rocked violently under the blast.

The words echoed in his mind. Sue had been in a car accident and she was in critical condition. It couldn't be happening, he just talked to her. Sue should have been at Tara's aunt. What was she doing driving back to DC under bad weather condition? He heard on the radio of the freezing rain warning for half the State of Maryland. Was it related to her phone call? He abruptly steered left avoiding a stalled car, to sway back in his lane. He sighed. At least the traffic was light, and the roads were clear. He tried concentrating on driving. He would be at the hospital in a few minutes. Maybe it was a case of mistaken identity? Maybe her car was stolen? Clinging to that hope, he parked in the visitor section and ran inside.
He solemnly entered intensive care unit, his heart sinking as he saw her lying on the hospital bed. He only noticed the doctor after the older man put a hand on his shoulder.
“Agent Hudson?” Jack nodded, keeping his eyes on her.
Sitting on the side of the bed, Jack took her hand into his. Her skin was so pale. She had a large bandage over her forehead. And she was connected to more wires than any surveillance equipment.
“How is she?” he whispered.
“Critical, but stable at the moment”, replied the doctor. “She went into cardiac arrest twice, once in the ambulance, once shortly after her arrival. She hit her head, causing a concussion. She's in a coma, not responding, though there is evidence of brain activity. At this point …we just don't know”, admitted the doctor.
Jack felt his heart shatter in thousand pieces. Only then did he fully realize how much she really meant to him.
“You come back to me, Sue”, he begged with tears in his eyes.
“We found that in her pants pocket”, handing Jack a red piece of paper. “That was the reason you were called. We couldn't reach the family members listed on her ID.”
“Her parents are away …somewhere”, shaking his head. Sue had told him that her dad surprised her mom with a week getaway for Valentine Day. He even recalled Sue telling him where, but that details escaped him at the moment.
“I see. A nurse is monitoring her from the station. You can stay as long as you wish”, the doctor said, doubting the agent would leave even if he were asked to.
The paper was shaped like a heart. He recognised Sue's handwriting. She used a black pen to write Special Agent Jack S. Hudson on it. A tear single fell on the H. Did that mean she returned his feelings?
“I love you, Sue”, he confessed, his thumb caressing her wrist. “You have to fight …for me …for us.”
“Jack”, her voice barely above a whisper. “You're safe.”

Jack gasped in surprise.
“Nurse!” he yelled, the lady coming immediately. “Sue talked.”
“Vitals are good. Are you sure, sir?” He nodded.
“Sue”, kissing her hand before brushing it against his cheek. Could she feel his presence? “I'm not leaving you. I love you too much.”
“Love you, Jack”, sighing deeply, leaving him stunned. She couldn't be responding to him, could she? Her eyes were closed, only her lips were moving. He grinned …he was in her heart, just like she was in his. It was the only logical explanation.
The nurse smiled at the exchange while making annotations in Sue's medical chart. “Now, don't go over exhausting her”, the nurse warned him gently, predicting the young woman would make it through.
“You sleep, sweetheart”, reaching for her face. Her skin was soft as his fingers tenderly caressed her cheek. The corners of her mouth lightly curled up, the hint of a smile appearing on her lips. “You'll be just fine”, the urge of kissing her surging inside him. “Sweet dreams”, he whispered, his breath tickling her skin.
“Jack …stay”, she murmured softly, tilting her head towards his hand, trapping it between the pillow and her skin as sleep welcomed her.

“You should get some sleep too”, the nurse suggested, pulling a comfortable chair by the bed so he could stay close to her.
“Thank you”, keeping Sue's hand into his, unwilling to let go even for a second.
Just as he met Sue in slumberland his cell rang.
“Hudson”, his voice rasped.
“Sorry to wake you up, mate, but Myles and I wanted news. How's Sue?”
“She is perfect”, Jack replied dreamily, his finger intertwined with hers.
“Glad you finally noticed, Sparky”, quipped his best friend, grinning widely over the phone. “Not exactly what I meant though”, laughing as Jack unsuccessfully tried medically related adjective instead, having woken up completely. “Nice try, Sparky, but you're busted. So I take it Sue will make a full recovery?”
“Yes, she will”, there was no doubt in his mind, nor was there any other option. He wasn't losing her.
“Good. Now, can you tell us what happened? … Jack?” sensing his best friend's hesitation.
“I'm not sure what happened, Bobby. She was in a car accident”, giving him the sketchy details he had. “I don't even know why she was driving back alone in the middle of the night.”
“She was saving our lives, mate, and you can thank her from us”, he declared. “On second thought, I will come and kiss her thank you myself later today”, teasing his friend.
“What do you mean?” involuntary straightening up in the chair.
“Kiss … lips touching …” laughter obvious in his voice.
“Bobby! Over my dead body!” Jack exclaimed.
“Jack, don't tempt fate”, Bobby's voice growing serious again. “Our dead bodies would be scattered all over that warehouse if it hadn't been for Sue's timely accident.”
“Start talking, Bobby”, back in FBI mode.
“The warehouse exploded, mate. No casualties”, Bobby quickly added before Jack jumped to the wrong conclusion. “Two suspects exited the warehouse after you left. We followed them in an alley. The building was rigged. It blew up as we were apprehending the thugs.”
Jack was puzzled. When he left the surveillance van, he could clearly see activity on the second floor. There was no way they should have escaped before Myles and Bobby barged in …
“Timeline is wrong, Bobby. They should have still been inside when you moved in”, Jack declared.
“Yah, well, good thing they were not”, observed Bobby. “The truth is … Myles and I had a little … disagreement”, Bobby reluctantly disclosed, figuring Jack would find out about the altercation one way or another. “Nothing you should concern yourself with. It delayed us just enough to allow us to arrest them.”
Technically he left them in charge, the timing of the offensive becoming their prerogative. And they got the suspects into custody.
“Good job”, Jack said after a few seconds of heavy silence. “Was one of them, Rothman?”
“No, but we think one of them is his lieutenant. They are not talking yet, but bad cop Myles is alternatively grilling them as we speak. I'll keep you posted. Time for good cop me to rejoin the fun.”
Jack remained pensive after he hung up. Jack, you're safe, resonated in his mind. He didn't dream those words, did he? She couldn't have known …could she? Did she risk her life on the icy road to warn him?
He stared at her with love and admiration. So much could have been lost tonight. Instead they were granted another chance. “Thank you God, for keep Sue alive …for keeping all of us alive.”
