“Where were you?” the nurse demanded in a highly aggravating tone when they re-entered the room, making Sue wish she could block that sound. “This is unacceptable, agent Hudson. You cannot just wheel her out of the room at your discretion.”

“Sue was working an appetite”, Jack lied, seeing the breakfast tray on the table. He helped her to her bed, transferring her I.V. bag from the wheelchair hook to the pole by her bed. That thing was a nuisance, he thought.

The nurse rolled her eyes, mumbling something about eating her food and taking her I.V. out afterwards as she left the room.

When Sue lifted the lid from the dish, her spirit plummeted. “Jack, I'm hungry …I want to go home”, sighed Sue, almost crying. “And I want that out”, ready to yank her I.V. out.

“Hold on, sweetheart”, stopping her. She was riding an emotional roller coaster right now so much happening to her in the last few hours, and he needed to slow the wagon down. “Let's begin with dessert, shall we?” reaching for the box of chocolate, hoping to divert her attention.

“Chocolate?” her eyes widening in delight.

“One condition …more like two actually”, he corrected.

“I'm not eating that”, she uttered with conviction, pointing at worst appealing meal she had ever seen.

“Forget about that”, smiling as he pushed the tray away. “I'm sure even Levi wouldn't be caught dead eating it either. I want to play a little game with you, but first you need to cuddle to me”, he said making himself comfortable in her bed.

“Are you going to get us in trouble, Jack?” leaning her head against his chest.

“Maybe.” She detected a hint of amusement in his voice and smiled. “We will play a very tasty mystery game”, kissing her nose as she arched her brow at him. “You have to guess the flavour of the creamy filling inside the chocolate.” Her eyes twinkled in anticipation. “You close your eyes.” She obeyed, unaccustomed to feeling safe in the dark, the sounds around her coming so much more alive.

“What is that crispy noise?” she asked in wonder.

“I'm removing the plastic wrapping around the box”, he chuckled quietly. There was so much he was taking for granted, he was looking forward to discover the world through her eyes …and her ears.

“It's not funny”, feeling his silent laughter as his chest trembled against her head. “I can hear but I don't know what those sounds are …except for the beating of your heart.”

“You should get use to that one, you will be hearing it a lot”, he promised her as he guided her head directly over his heart.

“It has a nice soothing quality to it”, she murmured shyly. “I could fall asleep listening to it.”

“Would you like to nap in my arms?” he whispered huskily.

“After you fed me chocolate”, she replied softly. “I'm waiting”, licking her lips in anticipation.

The oval shaped candy brushed her lips. “You have to leave a morsel for me so I can see if you're right”, he added.

“Berry? …strawberry?” opening her eyes just in time to see Jack pop the second half in his mouth.

“I agree …strawberry”, smiling at her before reaching for another one. “Again?” She nodded. “No peeking.” She felt the chocolate against her lips. She held it captive in her mouth, licking it to discover the secret flavour, almost immediately tasting the orange tinge. Her tongue darted out along the chocolate side to reach his fingers. Her lips moved closer to envelop the chocolate, her tongue licking his fingers in the process.

“You need to bite in it, sweetheart”, liking how she played with him. In one swoop she stole the entire chocolate. “Hey!” She gazed at him innocently, the creamy chocolate melting in her mouth.

“Orange …my favourite”, the tip of her tongue slowly following the contour of her lips to remove the last trace of chocolate.

“That's cheating, you know”, his heartbeat accelerating at the innocent wandering of her tongue. “I have no way of checking, unless …” He tenderly lowered his lips to hers. She did taste like chocolate mixed with orange. “You were right …orange.”

“Another one, please, Jack”, liking his little game.

Soon the box was empty. Content, she snuggled against him.

“Sweet dreams, my love”, wrapping his arms securely around her. Once he was certain she was asleep, he called Bobby.

“Hi, mate. Myles and I are on our way to the hospital.”

“Would you mind making a small detour, Bobby? I have a favour to ask you.”

wow ......thats so sweet ................ i wonder what will the detour be.........

The heart moniter didn't go overboard?! Maybe it got fried....

I am thinking what will could be the favour... flowers, ring... I am so corny! I have to train my imagination and read more stories here

oooh, detour?? How exciting!!

Bobby and Myles entered the room while arguing about the best love songs, their not so quiet arrivals waking Jack up.

“Well, mate, it seems you finally claimed her”, grinning widely as he noticed the couple caught in a tender embrace.

“If he was a dog I would even say he marked his territory”, commented Myles, glancing at the Valentines gifts decorating the room. “But isn't there a rule against sharing the patient's bed?”

“Very funny”, gently entangling himself from her I.V. line.

“Need help, mate?” teased his best friend.

“What he needs is a DO NOT DISTURB sign”, Myles quipped. “Good thing Sue's not connected to a heart monitor.”

“Or Sparky …it could overload”, laughing merrily.

“Sue can hear, guys. Don't wake her up, please”, Sue stirring in her sleep.

“What do you mean Sue can hear?” they both exclaimed at the same time, startling Sue who opened her eyes.

“Are they always that loud?” she asked Jack.

“I'm afraid they are. Let's get you sitting, Bobby has something for you”, eyeing his best friend for confirmation.

“You can hear?” totally ignoring Jack. “How did that happen?” Sue smiled. No wonder Tara was saying Bobby's accent was worth dying for.

“You cannot expect Sue to answer your questions on an empty stomach”, declared Myles, lifting his nose at the tray by the bed. It was a very efficient way to ensure patients didn't stay any longer than absolutely necessary, Myles had to admit. “No wonder you wanted us to bring something decent to eat”, handing Jack the take-out box. “Crêpes roulées …with chocolate and fresh strawberry …and real maple syrup”, Myles described as Jack held it in front of Sue so she could eat.

“Selected specially for you …at Jack's request”, added Bobby.

“Thank you”, brushing Jack's lips with hers.

“You're welcome, sweetheart.”

“Do we also get one for bringing it?” approaching her bed for a bear hug. “You scared us, you know.”

“Thank you, Bobby”, hugging him back. “I would have recognised your voice everywhere”, smiling at him. “And yours is very …sophisticated, Myles”, as he kissed her on the cheek.

“Well …thank you, my dear”, quickly pulling away, not used to display public affection.

While Sue was eating Jack filled them in on the latest development.

“So how long will they keep you?”

“I'll know when the doctor comes to see me tonight, Bobby. I'm hoping NOT long”, placing the emphasis on the not.

“Why were you on the road to begin with?” Myles asked, Jack having provided no details to that effect.

“Not that we're complaining, Sue”, observed Bobby. “You saved our lives.”

“Jack told me about the explosion.” She frowned. “I …I don't remember why I was driving.”

“I talked to Tara”, Jack informed her. “According to her aunt you mentioned an emergency, and left in a panic. Do you recall phoning me?”

“Yes …sort of”, her eyes losing their focus. “I remember thinking I need Bobby to show me how to pick a lock …not sure why”, chuckling at the idea. “I recall a sense of urgency.”

“It must have been pretty important to risk your life on that icy road”, commented Bobby.

“It was”, but the terrible sense of dread wasn't weighing on her shoulders anymore. “It's strange …but it feels like …” She shook her head, the memories a blur swirling out of reach.

“You take your time”, gently brushing a strand of hair behind her ear.

“I know it may not make any sense, but I feel I accomplished whatever I was supposed to accomplish”, staring seriously at Jack.

“And what exactly did you accomplish?” having caught the last few sentences, as she approached the room with Lucy.

“Well, well, I would say you accomplish a lot”, exclaimed Lucy as she saw Sue leaning against Jack's chest, his arms around her now that she finished the delicious meal the boys chose for her. “Jack, can you let her go a sec so I can hug her?”

“Make it fast”, he suggested, not willing to part from her.

“I hope the nurse is keeping an eye on you, Jack Hudson, and that you behave”, Lucy warned him, out of view from Sue.

“The nurse is keeping a strict eye on him”, answered Sue, stunning both girls.

“Nurse must be blind”, Myles remarked.

“How did …”

“I can hear, Tara”, recounting the events a second time for the girls' benefit.

“That is amazing”, Lucy repeated not for the first time.

“What's with the hearts on your sleeves, girls?” inquired Bobby.

“Tara's heart has your name on it, bush boy”, Myles read. “And who's Raymond Stines?”

“You picked our neighbour?” exclaimed Sue.

“Yap, and he asked me out when he saw it”, wriggling her brows in excitement.

“We stopped by the apartment on our way here”, explained Tara.

“So, does that mean if I ask you out for dinner you will accept, luv? … Unless you have other plan for Valentine Day?”

“No, nothing”, quickly shaking her head. “I mean …unless you have other plan.”

“Oh brother! Here we go again”, Lucy rolling her eyes.

YES!!!! The team is back together! I guess aunt Gertie wasn't totally wrong with her Valentine-stories. I hope Sue gets out of hospital soon, so Jack can take her home

“No more than two visitors at the time …no exception”, the nurse snapped when she came to check on Sue. “Or is the sign by the door not big enough?”

“Well, luv, we're …”

“Don't waste you breath on me, lover boy. Out.”

“Just a second, nurse Ber …” Myles trying to read her nametag. She positioned her short but bulky frame in front of the tall blond agent, silencing him.

“Didn't anyone of you learn how to read? Or is that an option with FBI agents?”

“Hold on”, Bobby began arguing.

“Bobby”, grabbing his arms. “Maybe we should go. I'm hungry”, having agreed to a nice romantic Valentine dinner after the team ganged up on them.

“You're right, luv. Sue, you get some rest, Tara and I will comeback tomorrow.” Sue nodded to them, thanking them for coming. “And Sparky, the rest of what you asked for is in there”, indicating a box under the chair he was sitting on, finally understanding why Jack wanted it. “Don't keep her up too late”, he grinned before leaving for his last first date.

The nurse stood in the middle of the room, her arms crossed over her ample bosom, eyeing each of them as they excused themselves.

“Even you, Myles, cannot empty a room that efficiently?” Lucy complained loud enough for the nurse to hear.

“I bet she gets to practice a lot, too”, Myles retorted, staring at the nurse with contempt.

“It's a gift”, smiling coldly at them as they left.

“Isn't your shift almost over?” Jack inquired sarcastically.

“No, you're lucky, I'm pulling a double shift.”

“Great”, Jack mumbled under his breath, making Sue laugh as she read his lips.

“Step outside, agent Hudson”, pulling the curtains around Sue.

'Please, stay', Sue signed.

“I'm not going anywhere, sweetheart”, keeping her hand into his, daring the nurse to contradict him. Surprisingly, the nurse ignored him. She took Sue's vitals and removed her I.V., before informing them the doctor would stop by later tonight.

“Dinner will be served shortly, try eating it this time”, she suggested before leaving.

“She missed her calling, she should have been a collector agent”, Sue sighed.

“I bet she could break a few kneecaps too”, pulling her in his arms. “How do you feel?”

“Head is still throbbing a bit, but much better.”

“Does that help?” gently cupping her head before his lips descended on hers. Not giving her a chance to answer, he deepened the kiss, leaning back with her on the pillow. He nibbled his way across her cheek to her ear, feeling her shiver under him as he leaned over her

“Jack, would you stay tonight?” she asked softly while she trailed kisses along his bristly chin.

He slightly pulled away to look at her. She gazed intently at him, her eyes darkened with desire. He intended on spending the night with her, the same emotions reflected in his eyes.

“I love you, Sue. Would you …”

“Dinner”, announced a petite lady with a blue uniform, loudly dropping the tray on the table, interrupting them.

“Jack? Would I what?” puzzled by his flustered expression.

“Later, sweetheart”, taking her hand to his lips. “Let's see if that food is palatable or if I need to order you something more appetizing.”

ughh!!! Does anybody know these days when to not interrupt??

The doctor unexpectedly showed up while they were eating pizza.

“Smells good in here”, he joked. “Did they suddenly improve the menu?”

“I'm afraid not”, Sue replied between two bites.

“Well, the good news is you won't have to suffer take-out too much longer”, announced the doctor. “I reviewed the ECG, the CAT scans, the x-rays …you're one lucky woman.”

“Can I go home now?” she dared hoping.

“Well, there's one detail that got me puzzled”, observing the young woman. “I also accessed your medical file and according to it you're …deaf?”

“She reads lips”, Jack answered for her.

“I see”, nodding in understanding. “It's just I cannot see any physical reason for you to be deaf, by all means …you should hear.”

“I …I do …since I woke up from the accident”, deciding honesty was the best approach.

“And you didn't think of mentioning it?” The doctor's voice was soft, with a hint of what she guessed was more disappointment than anger.

Sue felt Jack squeeze her hand, and she gave him a reassuring smile, letting him know she could handle it.

“I've seen too many doctors and been subjected to too many tests”, she voiced truthfully.

“I saw that in your file as well”, smiling kindly. “And I'm sorry for the little girl who spent too much time in hospitals and laboratories.”

“With no results”, she felt compelled to add.

“Ms Thomas, there were some mysteries science couldn't explain back then, and some that still remained unsolved today”, almost apologizing for it. “I believe you belong in the later category. I just wanted you to know that …we don't know what happened, and therefore cannot tell you if it's permanent or not.”

“It's a gift that I intend to enjoy for as long as God grants it to me”, she replied at peace with herself.

“Good. Now as far as releasing you”, sighing deeply. “I could do it tonight if you twist my arm hard enough, however I would recommend you enjoy our hospitality for the night. I would like to schedule one last ECG in the morning before you leave.”

Sue turned towards Jack for advice.

“It sounds reasonable”, he remarked. “But it's up to you, sweetheart.”

'Would you stay?' she signed, since she never received an answer the first time around.

'Yes', he signed back without a hesitation.

“We will see you in the morning, doctor”, she informed him. “But I'm warning you, I'll be leaving right after.”

“I hope so, because another patient will be waiting for that bed”, he replied laughing.

I'm glad the doctor didn't suggest that Sue should be subjected to a bunch of tests!! She's got the right idea! God has given her a gift - she's going to enjoy it as long as she can!!!

“Would you like to go back to the fourth floor? I could sneak you out again”, he offered after the doctor was gone.

“Could we snuggle instead?” motioning for him to join her.

He got up from the chair and went to close the curtain around her bed, before lying down with her.

“If nurse from hell comes back here, I'm as good as dead”, wrapping her in his arms.

“But wouldn't it be worth it?” mischievously raising her brow at him. Her hands moved to his chest, her fingers playing with the first button.

“You're supposed to remind me this is an hospital”, letting her wandering hands roam his soon to be bare chest. “And to behave.”

“This is an hospital, Jack”, her lips brushing his sensuously. “And I almost died. We wasted too much time already”, her fingers tracing taut muscles.

The taste of tomato sauce still lingered on her lips. He licked them slowly. The tip of her tongue peeking at the edge of her teeth invited him to deepen the kiss. The invitation was too tempting to ignore. Why did he buy a nightie instead of a pyjama, his hands seeking access to her skin, but encountering only the soft fabric that covered her alluring curves. Her hands migrated to his back, having gain full access to his upper body. He released one arm, allowing his shirt to slip off, while kissing his way down her throat, the three little buttons …

“Agent Hudson!” pulling the curtain open. “How many times do I have to remind you this is an hospital?” shouted the nurse, completely shocked. “Not the honeymoon suite.”

Sue turned crimson red, burying her head in Jack's shoulder while Jack kept her in his arms, nonchalantly staring at the nurse, making no effort to put his shirt back on, or to leave Sue's bed.

“I know, and we were honestly trying to be as quiet and discreet as possible”, he wisely remarked, biting his lips to prevent himself from grinning, feeling Sue's body shaking with laughter against him.

“Any reading I take will be useless. Her temperature will be up, her heartbeat erratic and her blood pressure over the roof”, growled the nurse. “Can you not keep your hands to yourself for more than two minutes?” not expecting any answer.

“No …not really.” He was tempted to say Sue couldn't either but he refrained himself.

Exasperated, the nurse slammed the door shut on her way out.

“Jack?” lifting her blushed face towards him. “Maybe we should go home.”

“Define home, please?” seriously gazing into her eyes.

“Home would be …where you are, Jack”, she answered softly.

“Exactly, sweetheart”, running his fingers into her dishevelled hair. “And if I take you home …” his eyes darkened as he imagined spending the night with her …passion rising deep from within.

Oh, yes, Jack, take her home!!!
