wonderful, Ivory!
I can't wait to see what Jack has in mind
marielynnette
As in all relationships.....sometimes it's hard. I think Jack and Sue have what it takes to make theirs work......Being friends first helps.....it's the foundation to a good marriage.

Ditto, on adding Deanne to the story.........you're doing a great job, Ivory!

Really liked Deanne and her wisdom. smile.gif

Agree I also, like Deanne's wisdom. Very helpful. Can't wait for more, he might propose! wub.gif Want to read that!

Because he loved sports, he thought about taking her to a Redskin’s game and having his question posted on the big board. He knew immediately that idea was a looser. He could imagine her reaction to having a stadium full of people watching her in close-up on the screen as she reacted to his proposal.

He laughed out loud when the idea flashed through his mind to take her to the National Spy Museum to somehow surprise her there. That was way too corny for something this important, he astutely decided.

He thought about arranging a way for the team to be there when he asked her. That could work, he had mused, but Sue would probably prefer something much more private. He decided that when it came down to it, he would prefer privacy, too. He surmised that there would be enough of a ruckus when the team found out it anyway.

He even considered using Levi’s help. Maybe he could attach the ring to his collar. The more he had thought about it, the more he felt that she would much prefer being asked in a simple, dignified manner.

One evening he took her out to a restaurant called Sergio’s for a candlelight dinner. The dinner was romantic and the ambience added to the occasion. He was about to ask her when suddenly they were interrupted by a nearby commotion. One of the servers had accidentally spilled one of the meals that were being served to a party at a nearby table. The plate contained a serving of peas and mashed potatoes. The plate hit the floor with a clatter. Green peas rolled everywhere. The mashed potatoes ended up on the shoes of the man who had ordered the meal. Those nearby, including Sue and Jack, felt sorry for the girl who was serving the table and tried to help her out. By the time the pea and potato escapade was over, the mood was gone. Once again Jack had to wait.

Another time, he took her to an art show that was being hosted over at the Smithsonian. Afterwards they walked for a while along the Mall. He was glad at the time that the Mall was not busy. They came to a bench and sat down. He was about to ask her when a pigeon flying overhead decided to make a generous deposit on Sue’s shoulder. Somehow pigeons and proposals just didn’t mix. He put his question on hold once again as they went to find a washroom where she could clean up.

He finally decided to stop planning and just let the moment happen. He kept the ring that he had purchased for her in his pocket. He would just trust that he would know when the moment was right. When the right moment came, he was almost as surprised as she was.

She invited him over for dinner one night. She made lasagna and fixed a tossed salad to go with it. Lucy was spending the night over at her grandmother’s, so Sue had in mind a quiet dinner for two. They had a relaxed dinner as they enjoyed each other’s company. About the time that they finished dinner, Jack noticed Sue had a bit of a dreamy look in her eyes. He put down his fork and reached over to take her hand. "What are you thinking?” he asked softly.

She gave him a smile that she reserved just for him. “I was thinking about you. You remember when we were undercover on the Dessa case how you teasingly asked me to name all of the things that I liked about you." Jack nodded that he did. "I teased you back and told you that there wasn’t time to think of one. I think we were both trying to keep things light between us because we didn’t want to compromise the case by loosing our focus. Well, this seems to be a good time to get something that I have wanted to share with you."

She got up, gave Jack a kiss on the cheek, and told him that she’d be right back.

When she returned, she held an envelope in her hand. Handing him the envelope, she asked him to open it. Jack did so. He discovered a greeting card and a letter inside. As he held the letter in his hand, he looked over at her and asked if she wanted him to read it. She nodded, yes. Opening the letter, he read...

My Darling Jack,

You are an amazing man, my love. I am truly a blessed woman to have you in my life. There are so many wonderful things about you that I treasure, and I want to share some of them with you here in this letter.

I love the way that you want to protect me. I think I have only recently become aware of how much I appreciate that about you. You do it so naturally that I sometimes take you for granted. You make me feel so safe and secure. You are willing to stand up to me when you need to, yet you are never controlling.

I love being close to you and the way that you use your touch, your smile, your eyes, and your kisses to show me that you love me. You make me feel cherished, Jack.

I love that you are a man of principles and honor. That comes across so clearly in your actions on the job. You could be doing something easier and safer, and probably make a lot more money doing it, but you choose to try to make a difference. That makes it so easy to trust you with my very life. I am so proud of you.

I love how you make me laugh. You brighten each day with your good humor and your passion for life. I love how your eyes twinkle when you laugh.

I love the way that you support and encourage the people you love. I have seen the way that you treat your parents, your friends, and your coworkers. I will always be grateful for the support and encouragement that you give to me every day. It has given me the chance to grow and develop professionally and personally.

I love you for seeing me as a whole, complete person. You have always shown me from the first day that we met that you view my deafness as a part of who I am, nothing more, nothing less. When I look into your eyes, I see love reflected back. That’s a wonderful feeling.

I love you, Jack.

Sue

Sue couldn’t help but watch the flow of expressions that washed over Jack’s face as he read the letter. She watched in anticipation to see his reaction.

The letter moved Jack to the very core. As he looked at her, he did not feel embarrassed to let her see that there were tears in his eyes. “Thank you,” he managed to sign.

Suddenly his phone started to ring. No, not this time, Jack thought, almost saying it aloud. Keeping his eyes on Sue the whole time, he ignored the offensive instrument that was clamoring for his attention. By the time it stopped ringing, he had her in his arms and they were kissing.

Suddenly Jack inhaled a deep breath of air. From deep within him, the words he had been wanting to say, along with the signs, just started coming.

“Sue, I have an important question to ask you. I have been trying to find the proper time and place, and I think this is it. “ He looked at her with emotion-filled eyes. You have become the most important person in my life and my heart. I hope you know that. I love you and I hope to spend the rest of my life with you. Sweetheart, will you marry me?” He felt his heart race as he waited for her answer.

Sue signed yes. She was too overcome to do much else. When she found her voice she said, “Will I marry you? Oh yes, Jack. I’ll marry you!”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the ring. Opening the box, he showed Sue a diamond solitaire mounted in yellow gold that almost winked at her as the light hit it. Taking the ring out of the box, Jack placed the ring on her left ring finger. They admired the ring for a few moments before going into each others arms. Sue buried her head in Jack’s shoulder as she hugged him tightly. Jack felt ecstatic. He had just proposed to the love of his life and she had said yes. They pulled slightly away from each other and found each other’s lips. It was their first kiss as an engaged couple. It was heartfelt, intense, and full of promise.

Levi had been quiet during all of this, but he sensed that something important had happened. Coming over and jumping up on Sue, he succeeding in pushing her against Jack. “Thanks for your help, Buddy, but I don’t think we need anyone to push us together anymore,” Jack quipped. And so it was that Levi was the first to offer congratulations to Sue and Jack.

*****

The next morning Sue was getting her purse when Levi nudged her. It must be Jack, she thought. She opened the door with a big smile. Standing there in the door way was John Anderson, her landlord. He smiled at her as he commented that she must have been expecting someone else. Her landlord proceeded to tell her that they would be working on the heating system that day. It wasn’t to take very long, but she was to call him if there were any problems. She thanked him, and he was on his way.

Moments later, Levi again pawed at her leg. This time it has to be Jack, she thought.

It was. She opened the door and greeted him with a smile that she reserved for him alone. He returned her smile in kind. Seeing that they were alone, he took her in his arms as they allowed themselves the luxury of relaxing for a time in each other’s embrace.

“How is my lovely fiancée this morning?” he asked.

I’m standing here with you holding me in your arms. I couldn’t be better," she responded.

“You say you couldn’t be better. Hmm. You know, maybe I should take that as challenge. Let’s see if I can help you feel even better than you are feeling now."

The loving look that she saw in his eyes deepened, showing her that she was about to be thoroughly kissed. As she felt the kiss begin, she was more than ready to respond. Whenever Jack experienced the way that she so readily responded to his touch, whenever he sensed the pleasure that his kisses brought to her, it both thrilled and humbled him. For Sue, his kisses always left her feeling cherished and secure.

When they arrived at the bull pen later, Lucy was already there having driven over to work from her grandmother’s. Soon all of the team had arrived and were greeting each other and mapping out the day’s procedures over a morning cup of coffee. At an opening in the conversation, Jack cleared his throat, took Sue by the hand and said, “Sue and I have an announcement we’d like to make.” He looked at Sue intently as he spoke. “Last night, I asked this incredible woman if she would be my wife…and she said, yes.” Pandemonium quickly erupted as everyone congratulated Jack and admired Sue’s ring.

Everyone was thrilled for Jack and Sue. Word of their engagement spread through the building from the top to the bottom like wildfire.

A/N Thanks for reading. Yes, there is decidedly a storm brewing. Batton down the hatches.

As the team filtered in on that blustery day, it wasn’t long before everyone who worked in the bull pen noticed that the climate matched the weather outside. There was a thick tension in the room that hung over everything like the dark clouds working there way across D.C. The cause of the tension seemed to be coming from, of all people, Jack and Sue. It became apparent to the teammates who knew them so well that they something was very wrong. They were avoiding each other like the plague. They didn’t greet each other. They didn’t make eye contact with each other. They only seemed to be speaking when work called for it.

Tara and Lucy gave each other quizzical looks. Suddenly Lucy almost gasped. She caught Tara’s eye and signaled to her that a rendezvous in the ladies’ room would be in order. Once in the ladies room, Tara and Lucy stared at each other in complete disbelief. “Whatever has happened?” Tara asked Lucy.

“I don’t know. Everything seemed fine yesterday. It was my night to stay with Grams, so I didn’t see her this morning.” Lucy held up her left hand. “I just noticed that Sue is not wearing her ring. I’m clueless. Make that…I’m in shock.”

“Me, too,” Tara responded. “I feel so bad about what has happened.” Then she looked at Lucy and shrugged as she added, “But we don’t really know what has happened, do we?”

It was right after lunch that day that Lucy and Tara came to realize just how serious the situation was. On there way into the bull pen they came upon Jack and Sue, who were standing facing each other as they engaged in a very heated conversation. They froze in place not believing what they were hearing. Before they could let them know they were there, they heard the last part of the conversation

“Jack, I don’t think this is the time or place to get into this. Others will be arriving back from lunch at any time,” Sue was saying.

That may be, but you were the one who started this discussion that we are having.”

“Just drop it, Jack, okay.”

“I certainly didn’t expect this from you, Sue,” Jack fumed.

“What is that supposed to mean?” Sue demanded.

“I didn’t expect you to show this childish and immature behavior.”

“Just because I found out, you are calling me childish and immature,” Sue challenged.

Jack’s voice got louder. “Not you… your behavior. And because I feel that you are acting unreasonably, that makes me the bad guy here? “

“You are calling my reaction unreasonable, what about your behavior? How did you think I would react?”

“Not like this. You are refusing to see my side.”

“Don’t make it worse, Jack.”

“For once in your life be reasonable.”

“Jack Hudson, if this is the way you are going to act if we were to get married, then it appears that I made a wise decision when I returned your ring.” Sue looked up at Jack with tears of anger and hurt streaming down her face. She stepped around Jack putting herself in eye contact with Lucy and Tara.

“We’re sorry, guys. We… we didn’t mean to be here.” Lucy sputtered.

Sue managed to sputter out the words, “Not your fault,” as she flew off in a retreat.

“Sorry we got into it at work.” Jack rasped out. He turned on his heel and went to his desk. Once there, he stoned his features to show that the matter was not open for discussion.

Keeping it low key, Tara and Lucy quietly went to the ladies’ room to check on Sue, but she wasn’t there. They decided that she must have purposely retreated farther away in order to have some privacy so they didn’t go looking for her. She probably went to the park across the street, they decided.

Sue eventually returned with Levi in tow. Sensing something was wrong; Levi ambled over to Jack and placed a paw on his knee. Jack looked at him and wordlessly rumpled his fur before quietly sending him back to Sue.

It was heartbreaking to their concerned friends as they observed Sue and Jack working through the day. It was like watching two puppets on strings, who were on display for all to see, as they moved around a stage with their stiff and awkward motions.

It was not just the women who were totally perplexed about what had happened. Later that morning, Myles and Bobby were called downstairs to interview a witness. Along their way, the topic of Sue and Jack naturally came up. “Do you think that they had a lover’s quarrel?” Myles asked.

“I don’t know,” Bobby replied. “Jack hasn’t said anything to me, either. He sure doesn’t look like he is ready to talk. Knowing Sparky, he’ll talk when he is good and ready, and not a moment before.”

“For once I agree with you,” Myles stated. “His look is so Spartan that I can’t read him. I guess we will just have to follow Jack’s lead on this one.”

“Right you are, mate.”

Analytically minded Myles began to muse out loud. “Well, things seemed fine yesterday…at least in the morning. When they both took the afternoon off, I assumed it was so that they could spend some time together. Whatever has happened obviously occurred since yesterday morning, Given this kind of strong reaction, you don’t suppose it came out that Jack was… well… seeing another woman. It would be the very last think that I’d expect from Jack, especially after being engaged, but I am hard put to come with another explanation.” Myles cringed as he remembered the time that he had hurt Lucy by cheating on her when they were dating. He still regretted that deeply. He found himself thinking about Lucy for a few moments before he refocused his thoughts

Bobby followed Myles line of thinking perfectly. “No, that can’t be it,” he responded. “There has to be another explanation here.” Bobby paused for a moment and then asked, “Did Tara or Lucy tell you about this morning?”

“About their argument, yes, Lucy told me. It sounded pretty bad,” Myles confirmed.

“Jack really appears to be hurting. Maybe we should try to stick with him this evening? Why don’t I give it a try and see if he will go for it?” Bobby proposed.

Myles nodded. “Count me in.”

Bobby and Myles knew that Jack was not one to drink to drown his sorrows. He much preferred a clear head to deal with what came his way. They approached him that afternoon and asked him to join them after work for burgers and some pool at one of their favorite places to unwind, the place that he and Bobby had taken their mentor Wes to just before he died [a/n This may be called Bennigan’s, but I’m not sure].

Bobby took hold of a cue stick and chalked it up. Myles took the rack and positioned the balls for the break. He gave Jack what he hoped was an encouraging clap on the back as Jack took his position to shoot. They played through a couple of games. Jack usually held his own playing, but this night his concentration was understandably off. Bobby and Myles could tell that Jack was feeling jumpy.

After a time, Bobby came along side Jack and put a hand on his shoulder, “It feels like you’ve been punched in the gut and had the wind knocked out of you, doesn’t it?”

“That description works,” Jack answered with a sigh, but making no signs that he was ready to talk further.

“That’s how it felt when Darcy broke up with me and left for California. As I recall, you and I played a serious game of handball that night. It helped take the edge off. What do you say, mate? It’s still early.” Bobby almost included that a certain date to a concert with Tara had helped to take the edge off as well, but he was still trying to sort out that one.

“Okay with me. And … thanks, Bobby…Myles.”

And so it happened that the three men found themselves finishing up the evening at the handball court.

Yes, Restie you have the right idea. I think there may be a lot of varities of the game called handball, but this is what I had in mind. I found this description on the web. Thanks for asking, Jaide. I plan to post later today. I wonder if we will get any closer to knowing what is going on with Sue and Jack and why their engagement has hit the skids? wink.gif

QUOTE
Types of Games. Four-wall handball may be played by two, three or four players. When played by two, it is called singles; when played by three, cutthroat; and when played by four, doubles.

Description. Handball is a competitive game in which either hand or either fist may be used to serve and return the ball.

Objective. The objective is to win each rally by serving or returning the ball so the opponent is unable to keep the ball in play. A rally is won when one player is unable to return the opponent's shot to the front wall before it touches the floor twice, or when a player returns the ball so that it hits the floor before striking the front wall.

The women were naturally concerned about the situation as well. At one point in the day, Lucy met up with Sue at the break table as they were each getting some coffee. “Sue, do you have any plans for dinner?” Lucy asked. She felt bad for her friend and wanted so much to help.

Here it comes, Sue thought. “No, I don’t have plans,” she answered.

“Tara and I were thinking of going out for dinner tonight and maybe a bit of shopping afterward. Want to join us? We can avoid cooking,” Lucy asked her. Lucy patted Sue’s arm as she added, “We can also completely and totally avoid the topic of a certain Mr. Hudson, if you like.”

“Thanks for asking Luce. I’ll like that. I probably won’t be good company though. And you’re right; I would rather not talk about it.”

Lucy was glad Sue had agreed to go. Tonight she would be returning to the apartment and this would help to break the ice. She still wasn’t sure what she would say to Sue. She just had to trust her instinct that she would say and do the right thing.

It was still stormy outside when the ladies left work to go to dinner together. The women went to a Thai restaurant that they all liked. Sue didn’t eat much, she mostly picked at her food. She was pretty melancholy during the meal, and just as Lucy promised the women didn’t push her to talk. Next on their agenda was shopping for some shoes at the mall. Lucy found a pair of wedges that she liked where as Tara found a quilted purse that she felt was an essential accessory to add to her wardrobe. Sue didn’t see much that caught her interest. She did, however, take a second look at a red sweater that she saw. Before she realized what she was saying, Sue held the sweater up to her and asked her friends, “What do you think Jack will think of this swe… .” Her eyes filled with tears, but she said nothing further. Her friends wisely ignored it. They finally tired of shopping and decided to call it a night.

Later on at the apartment, Lucy offered to walk Levi and Sue took her up on it. By the time Lucy returned, Sue had already changed for bed and was in the kitchen heating up a cup of tea.

“Sue, sometimes we’ll tease with each other with ice cream to get the other to talk about something. But this is way too serious for that. I’ll try not to pry. I’m just concerned for you girlfriend.”

Sue nodded that she understood. Putting down the cup of tea that she was holding, Sue accepted a hug from Lucy.

There was, however, one lingering question that hung in the air that Lucy had to ask Sue. She looked directly into Sue’s eyes and asked point blank. “Sue, did he cheat on you?”

That was a question that Sue chose not to avoid. She looked back at Lucy and in her first language signed, “No Lucy, he didn’t cheat on me.” With that said, she put her mug in the dishwasher, told Lucy good night, and went to bed. Lucy shook her head sadly at Sue’s retreating form.

The next morning the team arrived for work in a somber mood. D. surveyed them soberly as he saw them busy themselves with paperwork.

Later in the morning Sue went out to walk Levi in the park across from street. About that same time, Jack was called out for a meeting.

Bobby ambled over to Tara. “So, have you learned anything new?” he asked as he nodded in the direction of Sue and Jack’s desks.

Tara shook her head. “Nah. Sue is not saying anything. Not even to Lucy. She’s been real emotional, but she’s keeping a lot of it inside. How’s Jack?”

“Not faring much better, I’d say,” Bobby noted.

Myles and Lucy caught on to the conversation and came over to join them.

“I wish there were something that we could do,” Lucy bemoaned, throwing her hands in the air.

“Of course, we all do Lucy, but all we really can do is offer support. We are all just going to have to wait and see how this plays out,” Myles rejoined.

A/N Thanks for the offer of cherubs. thank you.gif I'm sure they would be very helpful, at least the ones with nice dispositions. However, they are such busy little things that I suppose that they already have their their hands full with helping out already. Thanks for reading and for your encouraging comments.

As the week that followed the breakup unfolded, it turned into an arduous time for everyone on the team. For one thing, the caseload went through the roof. It wasn’t the seriousness or the severity of the cases that was the issue, but it was the shear number of them. A lot of sorted details kept everyone focused on the work at hand.

D. Gans kept a close watch on Jack. Because he knew that he was stressed out personally, he wanted to be sure that his work focus was intact. He was ready to send him home on a moments notice if that was he needed. Jack’s professional reaction was exactly what D. expected. As a matter of fact, it seemed to help Jack to be able to focus on work. D. looked at Jack once and recalled Jack telling him that he would gladly trade his freedom for what he had. D. hoped and prayed that he would be able to find a way to help these two. Both Sue and Jack were working effectively enough for the present, but what of the future? Now that it appeared that their romantic relationship may be over, he began to ask himself how this would affect the team in the long term. He wondered if he should be expecting one or both of them to come to him asking about a transfer. With the crazy caseload there was barely time to keep on top of the cases, let alone think effectively about Sue and Jack’s situation. He also kept Sue in his radar as well. She seemed to be holding it together okay, but he was expecting her to need some time off after things settled down to pull herself together. They were both at the top of their professional game, but D. sensed they were both paying a price for it personally.

D. entered his home one evening very glad to see Donna. He put a lot of special attention into their greeting as his kiss reflected both this love for her, yet clued her into his need to talk. When she asked what was wrong, he told her.

“Sue and Jack are having a rough time right now. It’s seems that they have called off their engagement." Donna looked up at him in surprise. She pulled him closer into his arms as she digested what D. was telling her.

“Sue and Jack… I can’t believe it.” She held D. for a while before speaking again. " You know, it certainly brings back memories.”

“Yeah After we met and you helped me with my algebra class, it was not completely smooth sailing, was it, honey?” He smiled at her.

“No” she agreed. “I suddenly became afraid of your interest in law enforcement. I was not sure that I wanted a marriage where I would constantly be concerned that my husband would be coming home at night. Is that what they are working through?”

“I can’t put my finger on it, but it seems to be much more than second thoughts about the job or their careers. I think Jack may need someone to talk to. I don’t know that I can help, but I believe I will try just as soon as he shows signs that he is ready to talk. Maybe I will invite him to come over on Saturday to help with getting that deck started. At least I can try to get him out of the apartment over the weekend if nothing else.”

He smiled at her and squeezed her hand as they turned to respond to the commotion they heard in the hallway that signaled to them that Tanya and David were home.

-------------------------

It was the next day that a taxi cab pulled up in front of a quiet Georgetown residence. The cabbie thanked his fair as he paid for the ride. Walking up to the building, he used a loaned key to enter the apartment. The key in his possession gave him access to a pleasantly furnished living room decorated in a country motif. Pocketing the key, he made his way to one of the living room chairs and made himself comfortable. He knew that she would be there in a half hour, so he prepared to wait. A clock on the mantle ticked off the minutes for him.

A half hour later, the woman that he was expecting pulled her car into a parking place outside the same apartment. She turned off the ignition, put the car’s gear in park, and then made her way up to the apartment. She barely had time to knock on the door before it was opened, and she was gently pulled into the living room. The door was quickly closed behind her. She whirled and fell right into the arms of Jack Hudson. He drew her up her up tightly against him and kissed her soundly. She returned his kiss with equal ardor. When they reluctantly ended the kiss, she looked up and him and asked, “Do you think anyone saw us or suspects anything?”

“I sure don’t see how,” he assured her. “That taxi I took should throw anyone off if they were watching. We came separately and at different times." He cupped her face in his hands and smiled brightly at her. "We took nothing to chance when we planned our rendezvous here.”
