He was feasting on her lips, nibbling here and there, mindful to intermittently soothe the area with his tongue, fueled by her soft sighs. His chest burned where her hands were busily exploring, rubbing firmly over his chest before teasingly scratching their way down to his abdomen. He took a tiny step forward, seeking even more contact, causing her to run her hands up to his neck and into his hair, sending torrents of excitement throughout his body.

“G...g...goo...good,” her gasping stutter finally making its way into his brain, “definitely good,” she sighed when he lifted his head to listen. She raised heavy eyelids to observe him, his face inches from hers, finding him totally absorbed with her. “Your taking me by surprise is most assuredly a good thing.”

“I aim to please,” he replied cockily, his hands at her waist not so steady. Watching her smile, he groaned but took a step back, needing to distance himself before things got too out of hand, something he realized could happen all too easily with her. “HUNGRY?” he asked.

She nodded, glancing around, having forgotten that they stood at the top of the stairs leading to the roof of her building. “What are we doing up here, Jack?”

“Have you ever been up here?”

“No. But evidently you have,” she surmised, leaning against the wall and casting him a suspicious look.

He momentarily broke eye contact, not having foreseen the turn in the conversation. “It’s nothing, really,” he finally shrugged, pretending indifference. “I, uh, might have spent some time up here, umm, the week you were, ah, planning on moving.”

Sue studied him closely, watching him struggle to explain his actions. Her own emotional turmoil fresh in her mind, she stepped forward and rescued him by wrapping her arms around him, burrowing her head under his chin. “I’m so thankful God got my attention before I left.” Lifting teary eyes to his, she whispered, “I wouldn’t have wanted to miss this day for anything.”

He lowered his head and kissed her nose before tenderly wiping away her tears. “Just this day?” he asked, lifting an eyebrow playfully. “I could have sworn I gave you a date book earlier. We can have lots of these days.”

Reclaiming her snuggling nook, she heaved a tremulous sigh, her voice barely audible, “I’m glad I didn’t miss you.”

He tightened his arms around her, kissing the top of her head and whispering, “I would have come after you,” even though she couldn’t hear him. Not wanting to break the spell, but anxious to continue their evening, he set her back from him gently. “I think I promised you dinner?”

Smiling shyly, she nodded. “Yes, I think you did.”

“Then let’s go. No more kissing me and distracting me,” he warned her with mock ferociousness.

“Yes, Sir,” she saluted saucily. “I won’t kiss you again.”

He started to open the door to the roof before pausing and turning back to her, his mouth open. “Um, I didn’t mean no more kissing ever...or tonight. I just meant until after we eat.”

Sue wiped her forehand across her brow and slung off the imaginary sweat. “Phew! I’d hate to see that fruit dip you’ve saved all day go to waste!” Giving him a flirtatious wink, she trounced ahead of him, through the door leading to the roof, and came to a sudden stop.

Sorry to be so long - it's 10th anniversary day and my hubby had plans for me!

She felt as if she had walked out of her building and stepped into the sky. Everywhere she looked, lights twinkled in the slight breeze. Jumping slightly when Jack placed his hand on the small of her back, she glanced at him, her smile bemused. “It’s beautiful, Jack. How did you...when did you...WOW.”

“I told you I had some things to do this afternoon,” he said with a wink. “Come on, our table is around the corner.”

Feeling somewhat like a fairytale princess, she walked under the canopy of lights beside her handsome prince, gasping when she saw their table. “Jack,” she whispered, “It’s amazing.”

He led her to the white canopy covering their cozy table for two. Three tall propane heaters provided the warmth needed to enjoy their outdoor meal. More white lights illuminated the area, bathing them in soft glowing light, but providing more than enough illumination to converse. Turning to her, he ran his hands down the lapels of her coat, moving to the first button and sliding it through the hole. “May I have your coat?”

Nodding her head, her hands covered his, only to be pushed away.

“I think I can handle this,” he said, his breath just a bit harder to catch. Keeping his eyes locked with hers, he slid his hands down and unfastened the rest of the buttons before trailing his hands back up and pushing the coat off her shoulders. Dragging it slowly down her arms, he leaned forward, bringing his face parallel to hers as he tugged the coat the rest of the way over her hands. Breathing deeply, he basked in her scent before blowing gently on her ear and raising his head.

Her breathing was erratic, her senses on alert, enjoying Jack’s soft touches and his nearness. The current of awareness running through her exploded when she felt him puff softly in her ear. Shivering, she met his gaze when he raised his head, marveling at the desire shimmering in his eyes. Watching his head descend towards her, she gathered her wits enough to tuck her head and duck under his encircling arms. “Now, Jack. Wasn’t it you that said no kissing...until after dinner?”

He planted his hands on his hips and gaped at her. “You’re not serious, are you?”

“Just doing what you requested,” she answered with a saccharine sweet grin.

“You pick now to listen to me?”

“Yes. I pick now, for now,” she giggled.

Rolling his eyes, but grinning, he tucked their coats away and then settled her at the table. He rolled the cart that had been sitting off to the side close to their table and opened it, revealing the food within. Answering her unspoken questions, he explained. “I have friends at Cagle’s Steakhouse. They do quite a bit of catering and I borrowed their smaller cart. We have a wonderful meal all nice and hot waiting on us.”

They had been enjoying their dinner, their conversation flowing smoothly, when a definite gleam entered Jack’s eyes. “I think now would be a great time for you to tell me about the camera.”

“The camera?” she asked in confusion before registering his expression. “Oh, that camera.”

“So?” he prompted when she remained mute. “I’m listening.”

“It’s nothing, really,” she said with a shrug, taking a sip of her water. “Lucy found me reading when she returned after work and, to make a long, boring story short, I read her a snippet that included her...sneaking up behind us and taking a picture...on our first date.”

Jack laughed, “Sounds just like something she would do.”

“I know,” Sue agreed enthusiastically. “You must have done a remarkable job with the questionnaire you had to fill out.”

Ignoring her praise, seeing it for the distraction tactic it was, he continued to probe for more. “Why was she taking a picture? Was she trying to capture our first kiss?”

“No, your expression.”

“Are you always going to be this difficult when I’m trying to draw information out of you?” he asked with mock annoyance.

“I’m not being difficult.”

“Then why won’t you explain fully?”

“Because we’re talking about a fictional event. It’s not real, Jack.”

“So humor me,” he replied, leaning back casually in his chair, waiting expectantly. “Let me live vicariously through the me in the book.”

“Oh good grief,” she mumbled, trying to be put out with him, but failing. “Ok, let’s see,” she began, trying to recall the details. “Lucy wanted to get your expression when you first saw me because of the way I was dressed.” She looked at him hoping to see that he had grown bored with the conversation. Instead, he sat a little straighter in his chair, his eyes sparking with interest.

“Go on,” he encouraged.

“Seems I had been shopping after I announced I was leaving for New York and had tried to appease myself with something I wouldn’t normally wear.” Looking at him with growing suspicion, she asked, “Did you tell this Kav anything about the way I dress?”

He looked startled, flushing guiltily. “Um, I think there was a question about the kind of clothes you wore, but I didn’t say anything bad. You always look nice, Sue. Very professional. Nothing like tonight,” he added huskily, his eyes once again enjoying the picture she presented sitting across from him.

“You don’t think I look nice?” she asked, biting the side of her cheek, waiting on her comment to register with him. It took a little longer than normal since he was busily devouring her with his eyes. But once the comment hit home, he looked up, sputtering.

“That is not what I said and you know it. At least it wasn’t meant to sound that way,” he backtracked, now unsure of himself. He really hadn’t been paying that much attention, his imagination running away with him as he zeroed in on the line her sweater followed across her chest.

“Then you would have liked the shirt described in the book. It was Bohemian in style, which means the sleeves were flowing,” she added for his benefit. “It seems to have been rather transparent in places and Lucy just knew you’d like it.”

“Transparent?” he questioned, “as in, um, transparent?”

She noticed the way his eyes seemed to dilate at the thought. “Yes, Jack, transparent as in transparent.”

“Se...see-through, you mean?”

“It’s not real, Jack. Don’t get too excited.”

“Do they make blouses like that?” he wanted to know.

“Yes, they do. I just don’t happen to have one,” she let him know.

“Yet,” he replied enigmatically. “I do believe I could be persuaded to take up shopping.”

“Wow,” she replied with an exaggerated shudder. “Jack Hudson at the mall? There by choice, not by force? You’d actually consider that a fun outing?”

“For the chance of buying you a see-through blouse and then having you wear it? You bet I‘m there. With bells on,” he winked, waggling his eyebrows.

She laughed at the image, allowing him to pull her out of her seat as he stood and came around the table. “It might be fun,” she agreed, “only you don’t need to wear the bells. I won’t be able to hear them,” she deadpanned, as he backpedaled around another corner, pulling her with him. She raised an eyebrow and waited when he stopped, and a slow smile spread across his face. Growing uneasy with his Cheshire cat grin, she pulled her hands out of his and signed, “NEXT, WHAT?”

DESSERT.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Sue looked past Jack to see a luxurious garden swing situated so that it overlooked the park where she and Levi walked every morning. Another tower heater glowed invitingly nearby. Several clusters of pillar candles flickered softly in the night, providing the light they would need. The blankets and fluffy pillows strewn across the plush bench promised added warmth, completing the intimate setting Jack had created. Stepping closer, she noticed a small side table set with various chocolates. Laughing, she turned to Jack, finding him regarding her intently. “I like the centerpiece,” she complimented, turning back to admire the pedestal platter, ringed with fruit. The center was reserved for a generous amount of dip. “I didn’t know there was that much dip leftover,” she commented dryly.

“I added to it,” he replied proudly, reaching for one of her hands and tugging her closer. “I remember how much you liked it.”

“How much I liked it? I suppose you’ll just suffer through it for my benefit?”

“I suppose,” he said with an exaggerated sigh, working hard at keeping his face straight. “I’ll try to act enthusiastic if you should delve into the dip. But I make no promises,” he teased, unable to keep his gaze from her lips.

Seeing her shiver, he led her around the swing, and encouraged her to make herself comfortable.

She sank down and almost groaned aloud in delight, sinking into the soft, downy cushions. “This is heavenly, Jack. I’ve never seen a swing like this. Where did you find it?”

“Troy actually helped me,” he informed her as he offered her a blanket. “He has amazing connections. I was able to borrow this from the Madison Hotel, downtown.”

“Troy?” Sue repeated, making sure she had read the name correctly. “He’s out of town. How could he have helped?”

“I told you, Sue, I had a PLAN for this day. Tara’s little challenge helped me tremendously. I did some research, came up with a list of things I might need, and Charlie and Troy helped me find most of the items.”

She patted the cushion next to her, watching him sit beside her, before leaning close, her head nestling on his shoulder. “This is perfect. I wish I could take this moment and freeze it for a while,” she whispered, her gaze drifting to the park in the distance. “I’m almost afraid I’ll wake up and this will all have been a dream.”

Shifting and pulling her into his arms and across his lap so that he could face her while talking, he smiled affectionately at her. “It’s no dream. And if it is, we’re sleeping together.”

Her face twisted adorably, the corners of her lips turning up impishly. “Did you just say that we were sleeping together? Because if you did, isn’t that a question you would ask someone, not tell? And as amazing as this day has been, I don’t remember doing that with you. Somehow I think I would.”

CUTE,” he signed with a sardonic expression on his face before trailing a light finger down her cheek. “You know what I meant. I meant we were both asleep and having the same dream. But you’re right,” he drawled, his eyes sweeping her face, leaving her in no doubt of his growing awareness. “If we had done that, you would have most definitely remembered it.”

She daringly met his eyes for several seconds, her toes curling at the passion she saw floating in their depths. “You know what I do remember?” she questioned solemnly.

“What?”

Shifting slightly, she reached behind her before running her finger along his lower lip, leaving a moist trail of dip behind. “This,” she whispered huskily, reaching up and boldly running her tongue along his bottom lip, tasting the heady mixture of the sweet concoction and Jack.
