Sue sat back and watched him, her smile growing broader by the minute. It had been quite a while since he had all but dared her to read part of the romance novel he’d had written for her to him. He was supposedly searching for the page he wanted read, but had managed to get caught up in the story and was now avidly digesting page after page, seemingly oblivious to her presence. She was startled out of her revere when he glanced her way and grinned.
“Have you read the part about us having pizza and entertaining the other patrons?”
She nodded.
“So I guess you read about the other signs I wanted to know?” he asked with a wink.
Again she nodded. “I’ll have to let you borrow it,” she said, indicating the book still in his hands. “I want to finish it and you can read it after Lucy.”
He flushed, his grin sheepish. “I’m merely looking for something for you to read to me,” he said, turning back to the paperback and flipping through the pages once more.
She laughed delightedly, poking him with her foot. He refused to look back her way until he had found what he was searching for. Instead, he captured her feet and began to rub them as he had done earlier, hoping to distract her. Long minutes later, he fisted his hand in triumph. “Here,” he said, handing her the book. “Begin reading on the second paragraph please.” He leaned back to listen, his free hand now joining the other in massaging her feet.
Sue read, quickly losing herself in the passage.
She made her way quietly over to the couch and looked down at this man who had captured her heart. He was too handsome for his own good…for her own good. The dark, impossibly long lashes that fanned his cheeks in his sleep beckoned to her and cautiously she knelt down beside him and lightly traced their tickling softness with a finger. He didn’t stir. Growing bolder, Sue explored his brow next and then his rough jaw. He needed a shave, but the darkening stubble gave him a rakish look. She let her fantasies take flight. He could pass as a pirate, and he had stolen her heart, she decided. It was already racing madly for him, and she was simply kneeling at his side, devouring him with her eyes.
She blushed as she noticed his gaping shirt. Somehow it had become completely unbuttoned earlier…She stifled a groan at the evocative images that flashed through her mind – of hurling herself into his arms the minute he walked through the door, of wild, ravenous kisses, and hands that set her on fire wherever they trailed. It was always like that with him. She ignited at his touch and her fuse was getting shorter and shorter.
Her eyes swept over him once again. He would mock her if she told him she found him beautiful. Irresistible. But that’s what she was thinking now. Hesitantly she laid her palm along his rippled stomach and jerked her hand away abruptly when she felt scorched. Something happened between the two of them when they touched. Something special and wonderful and intoxicating…and dangerous. She forgot the values she had been raised on, the morals she had unflinchingly stood by her whole adult life.
He’d noticed the way her voice grew husky as she read, faltering over some of the words as she undoubtedly saw the scenes coming to life in her imagination. “It’s how I feel too,” he acknowledged when she glanced his way. “Please carry on,” he pleaded when he thought she might quit.
It took her a moment to continue, her wayward thoughts not wanting to be corralled. Finally locating her place, she continued, unaware of the velvety lilt to her voice.
She was killing him. He was sure he was going to incinerate under her touch, his nerve endings screaming in pleasure and frustration. He forced himself to remain still – he wanted to see where this would lead.
She was incredibly susceptible to him. There was something about Jack that she couldn’t help but respond to. She loved kissing him, touching him. And, anyways, he was still asleep….
Or not.
Jack snagged her around the waist and tumbled her on top of him.
“You’re awake.” She announced unnecessarily.
“For some time. You expected me to sleep through that?” There was laughter in his voice – she felt it reverberate in his chest.
“I’m sorry.” She apologized unrepentantly.
“I’m not…I’ve dreamt of this.” His response was spoken in a husky whisper that was lost on her, but the challenge in his eyes was not.
Uncertainty shadowed her features for a moment. He caught her hand, and turning it over, he placed a kiss in the centre of her palm. Then he placed it over his heart and held it there with his own.
His heart was thundering. She could feel it. But then, so was hers.
Sue glanced ahead, her voice faltering at what came next. A tap on her leg had her looking up.
“I love you,” he said, his eyes smiling.
“I’ll keep reading,” she mumbled. “Let me just get a sip of water,” she hedged, leaning over and taking a long drink.
He tapped on her leg again, waiting patiently for her to look his way. “I love you,” he repeated, holding her gaze intently.
“I know where I am, Jack,” she bristled, giving her attention back to the book and continuing to read.
“I love you, Sue.” Jack told her, never breaking away from her gaze. He watched her face reflect the surprise and delight and then acceptance of his words.
“I love you too.” She responded with a catch in her voice.
Another tap on her leg had her looking back his way. “What?” she asked, dropping the book to her lap. “Is that enough reading?”
“ME LOVE YOU,” he signed, waiting patiently, watching her all the while.
“I read that part. Weren’t you listening?”
“I was listening,” he told her. “I heard every word you read. It seems you are the one having the trouble listening,” he said enigmatically.
Her brows furrowed with confusion, irritation dancing around the fringes of her eyes. “Huh?”
“ME LOVE YOU,” he signed again, watching her stare at him blankly. “I said, I love you.”
She sat up slowly, her eyes never leaving his face. “You aren’t talking about the book anymore are you?” she asked, her breaths coming faster. “You’re saying that you...that you...,”
“That I love you,” he finished for her, watching her expression flood with happiness as comprehension finally wrapped itself around her heart.
“Are you sure?” she asked, causing him to laugh. “Why is that funny?” she demanded.
“Have you ever known me to say something as important as I love you and not mean it?”
She shook her head, no longer trusting her voice, her eyes shining suspiciously.
“You aren’t supposed to cry when a man tells you he loves you,” he reprimanded her gently, leaning forward to kiss away the tears that had spilled over and were rolling down her cheeks.
“I love you too,” he heard her whisper shakily, just before her lips found his in the sweetest, most soul stirring kiss he’d ever experienced.
“I didn’t ruin it, by telling you on Valentine’s Day?” he wanted to know minutes later as they lay wrapped in each other’s arms, unwilling to end their evening just yet. At her quizzical look, he continued. “What I mean is, since it’s Valentine’s Day, some people would think it cliché to confess your love. To be honest, I was going to wait and tell you later,” he admitted.
“I’m glad you told me today. It was the perfect ending to this most perfect day,” she assured him. “But what made you change your mind? Why didn’t you wait like you planned?”
“Because,” he responded just before his lips again found hers, “I’ve learned it’s best to leave nothing to chance.”

Thank you, Flip, for sharing that magnificent story with us! This was so romantic, and the idea of the book was just so creative! I used to have a children's book with my name and my brother's name in it like this - must go dust the attic someday soon to see if I still have it.
I am so sorry it's over. Come to think of it, it doesn't have to be over. I mean, february 14th isn't over in our world yet, and it definitaly doens't have to be over in fanfic-world yet!!!!

So, like I've tried to reply to this story about a zillion times today and the computer seems to devour my words and spew them out somewhere else but here so you're getting the reader's digest version of my comments.
Brilliant ending (though not brilliant that it's ended). You are way too clever, Flip.
And how you write Jack and Sue?

Beyond perfect. I wish I could see this on my tv screen -- it played out in my mind just like an episode. (only way better). And I still maintain that you need to write that book for men about romance.

thought I like the unfinality of it...so vague, likemaybe this scene has just faded away to be replaced by something else as artful and fluffy and heartwrencbing and nudge nudge wink wink. When will it be, huh? When?
Love everything you write, Flip. Could read it over and over again.

Wow. Flip, that was fantastic. Honestly, I can't describe it. Your writing always leaves me holding my breath until the last words "fade out," whether it's from suspense and angst, or romance and bliss.
I have to admit, it reminded me of some of my own past experiences that I remember in a bittersweet way, but they were exquisite moments, so I'm glad that I could relive them. Talk about living vicariously through Sue! haha.
So creative, fantastic, addicting, perfect, spellbinding, melt-worthy. I can't say it enough and with the right words, because there are none!
Thank you.
