Nothing To Chance
He’d left nothing to chance. At least he hoped he hadn’t. And he was good at planning, so this was sure to go off without a hitch. Ever since Tara had cajoled them all into taking part in her current festival of the week, St. Valentine’s Day.
“Come on, it will be fun,” she had encouraged her dubious team.
“Look, we’re used to you playing around with Christmas, and I don’t even mind the bunnies and chicks at Easter, though the live ducklings were a bit much last year. But Valentine’s Day, Tara? Is nothing sacred to you?” he had been the first to protest, but as usual to no avail.
Tara had compromised. “Okay, we won’t do everything I planned, but we will do…this one. Yes, this looks like fun!” She had grinned up at them all from her perch at the computer with such enthusiasm that no one had the heart to discourage her. “This is an ancient Valentine’s Day custom. And it’s easy to do. You have to claim the first person of the opposite sex that you see on Valentine’s Day for your Valentine.”
“And that would entail?”
“Oh, I don’t know, taking him, or her, out to lunch, doing absolutely everything together all day and then something special in the evening. Come on, this should be lots of fun.”
“I’ve never wished you were in a committed relationship more than I do right now.” He forgot who said that, but it was the general consensus of the day.
Of course they had all grumbled and flatly refused to participate… which is why he was perched out here in the freezing cold before the sun had even risen waiting to for the first glimpse of… Sue.
He was sitting in front of her house since 4 A.M. and tried not to drop off directly on the bench. He wouldn’t be glad constable to wake him up as a homeless or boozer. It was really cold but he knew this is his chance. He knew Luce is in her grandmother’s this weekend so Sue has to be alone at home. When he had heard about Tara’s idea... he had been contented... this had been pretext he had been waiting for a long time... he could spend day with Sue and find out how is his chance with her and maybe... he could change their relationship – from friendly to romantic.
He had been thinking about pretext of this chance encounter for many weeks but he hadn’t thought anything credible... when he had almost started to ask himself where the smart, inventive agent is his mind had been attacked by thought he could pretend he doesn’t know which day is... The simple idea is the best idea, Hudson! He praised himself... Last couple of months he always arrives to her’s, brings the coffee and they go out together with Levi... It’s their daily morning ritual so why could he change it because of this day?
Jack knew he has to cut this situation asunder... they have to change their relationship for good – stay good friends or become lovers... there is no other way. Jack looked to his watch... It’s almost 7 A.M. Sue should be up this time and be ready for her walk with Levi. Jack yawned again... He had become a morning person but he doesn’t like it. The love is really almighty enchantress! He thought to himself when he remembers that he looks forward to her everyday like teenager to his first girlfriend. It has to stop! He is quite a catch... girls fall down to his feet and he has been sighing for one girl over three years! This fact wouldn’t ruin his reputation so much as the fact he hasn’t been able to ask her for date two years ago. Bobby teases him he should be called Crash not he... So Jack decided he will show Bobby what it means to be date-legend as he is. He had planned great day for he and Sue... they will never forget to this day... Jack had spent much time with planning... he had let nothing to chance...

Surveillance van, round the corner of Sue’s apartment
“Do you see the steam which is rising from his mouth?” Bobby – Mr. Eros - chuckled. “I would like to know how many degrees below the zero are outside...”
“Ten degrees below the zero...” Tara – Miss Arrow... was her cover name for this operation - answered and looked on the monitor. “I don’t like rainy, chilly and frigid days like this one. I think he is suffering yet.” She smiled tongue-in-cheek to Bobby.
“It’s not enough... he is tough man... he is trained by FBI... we will have to struggle for our victory really hard. And we will win! We are the best!” Bobby shouted out and slapped his hand with Tara’s...
“Bobby, we hear you... you needn’t encourage us every five minutes!” Luce’s – Miss Heart’s - voice sounded from earpiece... she really wasn’t morning person and this mission is the last attempt of pairing Jack and Sue. I don’t understand why I let coax myself into this! She asked herself and her mind was transferred to the moment one month ago...

Jack was sitting in his desk and his mood was horrible... he growled at anyone the whole morning since the moment when Sue had mentioned she had had a date last night. When he had heard her he almost had choked himself by gulp of fresh coffee. The rest of her narration he had looked obstinate on the screen and had pretended he has much work. When Sue had started to describe the guy’s divine eyes and smile Jack had roughly interrupted her and had stated they have much work to do... they have no time for gossips... and had started to give orders. He didn’t let them breathe out the whole morning and they managed to rid of him only thanks work lunch he had been invited for two days ago. When he finally went out from Bullpen and Sue went out for walk with Levi Bobby looked around and ordered everyone comes to conference room.
“You all know he is my best friend but I can’t stand these his moods. Every day we are not sure if our day will be calm or lousy and everything depends on Sue... if she smiles to him the Bullpen is full of joking if she decides to take care of another man we should crawl away to the dog house and stay there. I don’t want bear it anymore! My life isn’t about Mr. and Mrs. Hudson!” Bobby finished his fervent speech and looked around.
Lucy raised her eyebrows and asked him with chuckle... “And what are you planning to do about it? Kill him... or her?” She jeered him.
“No, Miss Dotson... The Valentine’s Day is approaching and I will manage – with help of all of you – to pair them. Jack will dispose of his love frustration and Sue will talk only about him in Bullpen and I am sure this type of talk won’t enrage him.” Bobby smiled.
Luce laughed loudly. “You think you will manage to get them together?!?!? I have been working on it for almost three years before I gave it up!” She said amused. “You are greenhorn in matchmaking, Bobby.... believe me I know more about it and when I say they are lost for good... it’s true and you can’t change it!”
Bobby looked surprised to her. “Maybe I am greenhorn in it but I know Jack and I know what he needs to decide to act!” He snapped out.
“Cha! And what is it Mr. Clever?!” Luce asked hurt.
“He needs...” Bobby stopped himself. “Are you sure I can’t force him to tell Sue how he feels?” Bobby loves challenges and Luce just offered him one... he couldn’t resist.
Luce nodded.
“Do you want to bet?” He asked cunningly.
Luce narrowed her eyes. What is running in his mind? Does he really know how to put them together? No! Luce smiled for herself.
“Anytime with you!” She smiled sweetly.
They slapped their hands and wager was made. The two of them smiled self-assured... Luce was convinced she had tried everything and Bobby has no chance and Bobby was sure things can work if the real man decides to solve them. They contracted for prize and Bobby started to give orders.
“Tara you will think up some action for Valentine’s Day... something what Jack would catch himself in and would decide to prepare something for him and Sue... Me – as his good friend – will find out his plan for V day and then I will draw plan up. Tara will be my right hand in this operation ... Luce, D and Myles will be our agents... the tasks will be divided after my discovery of Jack’s plan. Ladies and gentlemen... Now I start Operation: Nothing to chance and after 14th February we will have two love birds in Bullpen!” He smiled contented.

“I see Jack... he is just exiting coffee shop and heading to Sue’s building.” D – Mr. Bow - said to his walkie-talkie.
“I love this petite change in our plan...” Bobby said sly. “I understand Jack didn’t fantasize about rainy V day but this nice weather could help us to add a small modification... I am sure, Jack will appreciate it.” Bobby laughed and Tara observed amused his happy face. She would never believe he could be so merciless fighter but this was side of Bobby’s personality which she doesn’t know and she has to admit herself he is cute when he has malicious sparkles in his eyes and cunning smile on his face. She knew he likes Jack as his brother and he would never permit to happen something horrible to him but there is the wager in the air and Bobby – as every man – doesn’t like defeat. She smiled for herself... Bobby really let nothing to chance... Jack really has no chance!
Jack was coming closer to the Sue’s building... he only had to cross the street...
“Mr. Bow... I think your time is here... be thorough please... we all want only Jack’s happiness...”
