Tara laid the poor defenceless bird softly on the passenger seat. She chuckled, as the bird appeared to snuggle deep into the recesses of the makeshift blanket. Placing her hands on the wheel she chewed her bottom lip as she thought as to what her next step should be. She needed provisions that were definitely a good place to start. Starting the engine she took one final look at the bird of peace before heading towards the nearest pet store that she knew definitely had an avian.
Wendy sighed as she felt her sore wounded body relax against the plush seat. The blanket made her feel safe and sound. The gorgeous rosy light that the woman called Tara emitted had the added bonus of being relaxing and soothing to her weary eyes and soon she found herself relaxing enough to fade into a sleep, with her one good wing she covered her face and drifted off.
Tara seeing the sleeping creature smiled as she pulled into a parking space. Removing the key from the ignition she gave the bird a final once over before heading inside the building. She was soon in a whole other world, one in which she wished she had a map for. It took her several minutes before she could locate the right section of the shop and mainly she was lead there by the songs of the many birds.
“Hello there my pretty” came the squeaking voice in Tara’s ear. Tara jumped as her hand flew to her piece. Her breathing slowed down as a giggle escaped her throat. Her brightly coloured parrot was perched to her left. She laughed at herself as she backed off while the exotic bird watched her with interest.
“Can I help you?” said the voice from behind a stack of bird feed. Tara turned to face the voice and came face to face with a rather tall dishy stranger. The man must have been at least 6foot 3, his skin reminded her off melted milk chocolate and a smile that rivalled Dean Cain. His piercing hazel eyes made her go to goo inside. Stuttering she quickly got out what she was after.
“Ahhhh a good Samaritan” he said with a broad grin showing off perfect teeth. Tara blinked furiously as she tried to keep her mind on track. “Let me be off service.” He said walking away and waving her on. His muscles rippled as he reached up to the top shelf and pulled down some suitable feed and then a water bottle. As he handed them to Tara their skin brushed against each other. Sparks flew between them as Tara went a glorious red in colour.
“Thank you” she said shyly as she headed towards the check out.
“Let me help” he shouted as he rushed after her. “My name is Orlando”
“Hi I am Tara”
“That’s a pretty name for a pretty lady. Sorry that sounded really corny, even more so when spoken out loud.”
Tara laughed, “Well this woman is never going to down a man for calling her beautiful”
“And that you are.”
Tara went scarlet.
“I was wondering if I could treat you to coffee tonight”
A stunned Tara stared back and slowly nodded her head. “I think I would like that,”
“Okay then it’s a date”
“K”
And in brief moment they had decided on a local coffee shop. Tara literally skipped out of the shop and back to her car and her patient.

Tara made a soft bed in a cardboard box lined with shredded paper and straw for Wendy. In it she also placed some bed seed and a small dish of water. Finally she softly and gently laid Wendy down. The poor bird squawked sleepily before succumbing to sleep. Tara lifted the light box and slipped thru to her elderly neighbour a Mrs Magoo.
Knocking on the door she waited patiently as she heard the soft padding of slippered feet.
“Hello my dear” came the pleasant voice as the door opened.
“Hi there, Mrs Magoo. I am sorry to disturb you but I have a favour to ask you”
“Well my dear it is always a pleasure and what is it I can do for you?”
Tara quickly explained the situation while battling her eyelashes at the elderly lady.
“So you have a date tonight?”
“Yes” Tara replied biting her lip
“Is he worthy?”
“ummmm I don’t know him yet”
“Well you be careful and if he is not worthy then don’t pretend to yourself that he could be and stay safe”
“Mrs Magoo I am a federal agent, you don’t have to worry about me”
“I don’t care if you are the sheriff I am still going to worry about you, that is my prerogative as your neighbour.”
Tara laughed, “You are just as bad as my mother”
“Great women think alike. Now give me a buzz when you get home”
“It could be late”
“And as you get older the less sleep you need, so do not worry about waking me up.”
“Okay”
“Promise”
“I promise”
“Well go and have fun and I keep my eye on this dove. She is a beautiful creature, a symbol of peace and some say love.”
“She is gorgeous,” agreed Tara before giving one last smile and hurrying back inside her house. She had a hot date to get ready for……

someone said to me angst was good, that person shall remain nameless for her sake and sanity.....
“Hey Jett, you got to see this hot chick I meet today at work. Talk about a fine piece of rump, mmmmm.” Shouted Orlando down the speakerphone as he tried to decide on what to wear.
“You are sooooo lucky O, you always seem to meet the ladies and once you flash that ‘innocent’ smile of yours they just seem to melt. She is not going to know what hit her”
“No she is not. I am one hot guy if I do say soooo and I am going to get lucky tonight”
“He shots and he scores,” chanted his mate on the phone.
Tara flicked her short hair back and smiled at her reflection. Tonight her hair was behaving and so was her skin. She giggled; it had been so long since she had last been on a date. If her memory served her right it was way back when she had accompanied Bobby to that benefit and that wasn’t even a proper date she kept telling herself no matter how it felt. She had a good feeling about tonight. Dressed in her old faithful black dress and pink casual cardigan, she slipped her feet into her sling back kitten heels shoes and grabbed her purse before doing a little dance as she headed out.
Orlando smoothed down an invisible wrinkle on his shirt as he waited patiently on his date. Catching a glance of his reflection in the shop’s window he grinned at himself, “looking good” he said with a wink. “Now remember to act like a puppy dog, desperate for love and innocent on all counts. And tonight will be a night that no one will ever forget”

“Tara,” called out Orlando with a slight fake stutter.
“Hi” said Tara in a shy manner as she walked over to him. A warm evening breeze brushed against their skin as Orlando opened the door for them to enter the romantic uptown coffee shop. There were soon seated in a secluded corner, dim overhead lights gave slightly more glow than the tea light candles on the tabletops. Tara femininely crossed her legs and smiled shyly. She felt the usual nerves rear their ugly head within the pit of her stomach. She hated dating, especially this sort when both parties knew very little, well next to nothing about the other. Linking her fingers together in front of her on the table she began.
“So Orlando tell me a bit about yourself?”
“I would rather talk about you,” he said with a smile.
“Me, well what can I say I work with computers for the government”
“Sounds interesting,” he said leaning forward staring deep into her eyes. Tara shifted slightly in her seat; his piercing gaze was making her feel somewhat uncomfortable.
“What about you? I know you work in the pet shop but tell me a wee bit more about yourself”
“Me I am just your average Joe, nothing special about me. I am originally from Miami but I have lived here for roughly 5 years now. So where are you from?”
“I lived all over the States, my father was in the seals, an admiral so we moved around a lot. But I have stayed in DC area for nearly 10 years now. I went to MIT so it felt right to stay on the East coast.”
“I do like intelligent women.”
“Thank you”
“So what are your passions?”
“Ummmm, computers and technology, Disney and animals. I was never allowed a pet as a child as we never lived in one place long enough and as an adult my job involves hectic hours”
“You are fascinating and incredibly beautiful”
“Thank you”
“Your eyes are a river that runs with love,” whispered Orlando leaning forward and licking his lips. “And your lips are like ripened strawberries just ready for the picking.”
“Excuse Me,” said Tara trying not to laugh.
“I think you are hot” he said bluntly before lunging over the table. Tara ducked out of the way causing him to crash to the floor. Standing up tall she straighten her dress out.
“I think tonight is official over” she said picking up her bag and striding out of the place.
Orlando lay on the floor, embarrassment burning his face. “How dare she, that little, ‘bleep’” he grumbled under his breath.
“No one rejects me, I am ‘the man’. She is not going to get away with this,” he said louder as he clambered to his feet. Dusting himself off he set off to follow her.
Tara shuddered as her heels clicked across the pavement. Despite the warm air she felt a sense of foolishness that caused her blood to chill. “What were you thinking Williams? Just get out of the whole dating scene period. It is obvious that you are suppose to be a spinster.”
Hugging her arms she scolded herself repeatedly, ignoring her surroundings thus not realising that someone was on the same route as her. Storm clouds suddenly appeared as large sploshes of rain dropped from the sky above. Tara quickened her pace while the man behind her did the same. Burning hot tears of anger slipped past her guard as puddles form beneath her and her body became drenched in rainwater. To get home quickly she needed to duck thru a park. Walking briskly and muttering to herself she headed down the broken and potholed pathway that ran alongside a grassy field. Keeping her head down and her arms around her waist she was about a quarter of the way along the dimly lit path when a strong hand covered her mouth and pulled her backwards into the undergrowth.

Wendy stirred in her makeshift nest, she had a heavy feeling in her heart and her heart was connected explicitly at this time with Tara. Opening her eyes she felt panic surge within her, something bad was happening and here she was trapped by her injury. Squawking furiously she tried to escape, tried to get free to reach Tara. Mrs Magoo gently encapsulated the dove between her hands and made soft soothing noises to the bird. If she could have shed tears she would have and if she could talk she would have screamed, but she could do neither, all she could do she was doing with every ounce of her energy.
The sweaty hand pressed hard against her lips smearing his pink lippy. Tara felt another arm encircle her waist encasing her arms in a tight hold. Her training was starting to kick in along with a rush of adrenaline. At first she tried to fight her way free but all she achieved was for the hold to get tighter. She felt her ribs being crushed by a muscular arm, her breaths started to come in sharp short gasps as her nose tried to do the work of her mouth. Fear galloped thru her body like a herd of stampeding cattle. She felt her feet slid over the wet leaves as the rain continued to pour down. She felt his heavy body slip bringing her with him. As she went down his hands loosened over her mouth and she was able to put to use her canines. The metallic taste repulsed her as blood seeped from the bite marks. It was enough for his hand to fly off and without a lung full of cold air she bellowed out and kicked hard with her heels hoping to collide with a shin. However his grip on her waist tighten as he used his bloody hand to slap her around the head. She tasted her own blood from the inside of her cheek as the world spun around her. Stars dazzled in front of her eyes as the world spun into night for her.

Darkness swallowed Tara up as she landed on the soggy cold grass. She could feel heaviness on her chest as she sunk into the mud. Fear gripped her bruised chest as her limbs refused to cooperate. A sliver of light cracked into her dark world and she found enough strength and energy to raise a knee, which found its bull eye in the fiend’s crotch. Hearing his muffled scream she took this as her cue and in one quick movement she was free from him. Using her hands in conjunction with her feet she crawled and stumbled up the small embankment. She could hear his raspy breaths behind her mingled with several choice words. She could now see the dim light of the pathway up ahead and as adrenaline filled her blood she pushed herself forward. Along with his foul words she could hear something else, footfalls on the path, regular ones such as would be made by a runner. She wanted to scream but her lungs where preoccupied with pushing her out of the darkness. Finally she felt the ground become more solid as mud became concrete. Please help me, she prayed as tears washed muddy streaks down her face. She could hear the man nearing her from behind and with one last bid for freedom she flung herself forward directly into the path of a runner, who had the decency to catch her falling form.
“Man in there attacked me” she managed to stutter out in-between breaths. The man who was holding her trembling arms squeezed them gently before ploughing into the bush.
Tara stood there alone in the semi darkness, tears pouring from her eyes and with her whole body trembling in shock. Her hair tussled, her makeup ruined, her dress ripped, her bag missing and with only one shoe with a heel she stood there pleading for safety. Her rescuer soon returned, his long blonde flat against his face he walked over to her and in a soft Irish accent said,
“Are you okay?”
“No” she wept as she sniffled loudly and wiped her nose.
He took out his phone and instantly phoned it in. he shrugged out of his jacket and hung it over her shoulders. Soon the place was filled with flashing blue lights and static from radios. A kind paramedic helped her over to the ambulance where she was allowed to sit down. After checking her vitals they decided that the best option was to take her in and treat her for shock. Soon she was lying down on the gurney all strapped in and bumping along the road. She wanted to sleep to fade away from this nightmare.

Tara sat silently in the eerily white cubicle. Distinct smells assaulted her fragile nerves as she clutched her shaking hands in her lap. Dr Annabelle Dixon smiled as she entered the small room. She had vast experience of working with assault victims and in her field she saw more than she could imagine. Pulling up the plastic seat she sat down and faced her patient.
“I am glad to tell you that none of your injuries are serious. You have several bruised ribs, a sprained ankle and minor cuts and bruises over your body but no broken bones. I see no reason why you can’t go home tonight with some pain medication but before you can go the police would like to talk to you. Would that be okay?”
“Police? Yes sure” replied a confused Tara. Why were the police involved and not the bureau?
Swinging her legs over she chewed her bottom lip, she suddenly felt nervous. She was so used to being on the other side of the fence. Hearing someone enter she looked up and came face to face with her rescuer.
“Hello again my name is Shaun, I need to ask you some questions. Is that okay?” he asked gently taking the seat the doctor had just been in. Tara nodded her approval.
“What are your full name, age, address and occupation?”
“Tara Jessica Williams, DOB 12 of March 1975, address is 18A Whitehill street Georgetown and I am a special agent with the FBI”
Shaun neck whipped up as realisation dawned on him. Tara blushed as she looked at him. Closing his notepad, he said, “I will inform the bureau and hand it over to them.”
“Sorry, I thought I had told you but I must have said it in my head and not out loud.”
“That’s okay shock can do that to a person.”
“Thank you so much” she said with sincere eyes.
“No problems, is they anyone I can call for you right now? Family?”
“I have none on the East coast.”
“What about friends?”
“Don’t want to worry them. I’ll be okay. Thank you”
“I’ll be going then. Bye”
“Bye” she said smiling at her hero.
Two agents from another team were there in record time and after taking her statement. Tara got together her stuff and headed back to her place. Knocking gently on Mrs Magoo door she felt herself shiver in her shoes.
“Good night” cheered Mrs Magoo as she opened the door. “What on earth happened to you?” she proclaimed ushering Tara into her nice warm house. Tara stood there as tears dripped down her face, off her nose and chin. Mrs Magoo wrapped her up in a hug and led her to the sofa where the whole tale of the evening was relived.
“I am an agent how could I not saw it coming and how could I not keep myself safe.”
“Hunney, first and foremost you are a person. A wonderful insightful person and he took you completely by surprise. Don’t punish yourself for his evil doings. You are a brave lady with a heart of gold.”
“I am never going to find Mister right,” she sobbed.
“You will! He is out there, you just have to wait and see. Maybe you have already met him and you just don’t know it yet. But don’t worry”
Tears eventually pushed Tara into sleep as Mrs Magoo continued to rock her like a small child while singing softly to her. Wendy watched from the safely of her box, her own heart aching for the young lady.

Slow movements were all she could manage, as her body protested against her will. She smoothed on the make up. The bruises twitched beneath her fingers as she finished her face and with one final flick of her hair to cover her face she gave a halfhearted smile in the mirror. Wendy watched her with concern; she could see the pain etched on her face and more than ever she wished she could take it away from her. She settled back into her cosy nest as Tara lifted the box and carried it towards the door. She knew she had to face the music and her friends but it was not something she was looking forward too.
She briskly walked into the bullpen, her head lowered and the box securely under her arm. She hurried over to her desk and quickly got herself sorted. She was so glad that she was the first person in; it allowed her time to sort herself out.
“Tara” rang the loud voice from the doorway.
Tara snapped to attention, “sir” she replied to Ted.
“My office” he said gently.
“Yes sir” she said quietly as she followed him thru.
Wendy stood up and took in her surroundings. She stretched out her wings and felt a sharp pang from her damage one. She cradled it back into her breast and started to people watch.
