Tuesday 11.00 AM Bullpen
Everyone other than Jack was at their desk working hard on their latest cases or completing paperwork from the last three or four cases.
Paperwork was not a favourite past-time and they all left it as late as possible which drove Jack nuts as he had to read it all and check it was all Ok before it could proceed further up the foodchain.
As Team Leader and trained lawyer it was his responsibility to ensure there were no loopholes to enable the perps to escape punishment.
Everyone other than Sue looked up as Ted walked in, she responded a few seconds later as Levi touched her leg with his paw.
'I need to see Jack, anyone know where he is..........?'
'Out seeing a snitch I think........ ' Bobby covered quickly, not wanting to land Jack in the mire.
'When he gets back, tell him I need to see him.........'
As they all nodded, he left the pen.
'So......... anyone know where he is?' D asked, concerned that he hadn't rung in....... if nothing else Jack always let them know if he'd be in late.
As the team shook their heads, they looked over at Sue....... if anyone knew where he was it would be Sue.
'No idea, haven't seen him since he came to Deaf Club last night.............' as she opened her mouth she realised it was a mistake, now they would wonder why he went with her and if anything was going on betweeen them.
'As if' she thought sadly, 'he doesn't want someone like me, he's just being caring and interested.'
She'd been signing about her role with the FBI the previous night, not giving away secrets but how she was working in a hearing world, she'd shown Jack the notes to make sure it didn't breach confidentiality and he'd asked if he could go along, taking her for dinner after..........
'Ring him anyway will you, please......' D asked her.
Trying his cell and home, they went straight to voicemail. 'Nothing, sorry......' Sue was beginning to worry, he usually phoned her if he was ill or delayed.

Chapter 2
Flashing her ID she asked where Jack was then turned to see him standing in the corridor, still in his jogging pants and T-shirt, right arm plastered and in a sling, the other with a bandage wrapped around it.
Forgetting she was in a hospital and that Jack was still her boss, as well as her best friend, she threw her arms around him in relief.
Realising what she’d done, she moved back quickly, ‘are you OK……. Do you have any idea how worried I’ve ………. We’ve been…….. why didn’t you ring sooner…….. what have you done………….?’
Grinning he asked her to slow down. ‘I can only answer one question at a time……I’m fine…………… I didn’t mean to worry you……….. or the team………….. I didn’t have my phone………… and I’ve broken one wrist and sprained the other………..’
‘How…………….?’
Fell over when I was jogging……………..’
‘Fell over……………. How……………?’
‘Jess crashed into me and I went flying…………………’
‘Jess……………?’ her heart sank, ‘should have known there was a girl involved somehow’ she thought sadly, ‘a guy like Jack wouldn’t be interested in someone like me……………….. deaf……….. naïve……………’
‘Yeah and I need to go check on her………… which is why I need you to drive my car……….. I drove here…………………. with difficulty I might add………………………, got any idea how hard it is to drive with sore wrists………..?’
‘Can’t say I’ve ever tried……………. and why do you need me to drive………… isn’t she here?’
‘No…………. why would she be here?’ Jack was confused and frowned, then realisation dawned.
‘Jess is a dog………….. I took her to the vet; the one Levi goes to, then drove here, but it took longer than I thought……….. so now I need to go fetch her………’
Sue was totally confused as well now, ’didn’t know you had a dog, Sparky………’
‘I don’t............ she must have come running out the bushes, sent me flying and here I am………….. although if I get a hug like that every time I go missing, I think I might go missing more often………………..’ he grinned at her and turned his brown eyes on her sending Sue weak at the knees.
‘How does he manage to do that to me?..........., every time……………….’ She thought as they walked to his car.
Pulling out her phone she rang D to let him know Jack was OK, ‘…………..we’ll be in later………………….’
Holding out her hand, she said quietly ‘keys…………….?’
Opening the doors to allow Jack and Levi in, she commented, only a little sarcastically, ‘you aren’t going to criticise my driving are you…………….. I know how men are when women are driving…………. ‘cos if you do, I’ll dump you and drive off………’
‘Trust me Sue, after the way I drove here you’ll have no comments from me………second gear all the way with my emergency light flashing………. and thank you…………… for doing this………………’
‘No problem, it’s a welcome relief from piles and piles of paperwork……..’. Pulling out of the car park, she headed for Jacks’.
‘What we doing here, we need to see Jess……………?’
‘No, you need a shower and food, I’ll ring the vet, tell him we’ll be along later.’
Sue was firm, ‘had anything for the pain……………………?’
Jack nodded, he loved it when Sue was firm, looking at his arms he wasn’t sure how exactly he was meant to manage but he wasn’t going to argue with her, he’d long ago learnt that arguing got him nowhere…………….

Chapter 3
Grabbing 2 plastic bags and some tape, Sue wrapped his arms to stop the plaster and bandages getting wet then sent him to shower while she put on coffee and food.
Feeling Levi’s paw on her leg she turned round and gawped, Jack was standing in the doorway, a towel loosely wrapped around his waist, bare-chested.
She’d never seen him like it before, she’d imagined what he might look like but her imagination hadn’t come close………………it wasn’t just her knees that went wobbly this time……….
‘You Ok………….?’ She mumbled, trying to stop her imagination running riot.
‘Kinda stuck……… sorry……… I managed to get everything else off, but I can’t get a grip on my socks……………… can you help……………?’
‘Socks……………….?’ She mumbled, ‘yeah sure………….’
Bending down she hoped the towel was secure as Jack hoped the same, painfully aware of the effect her close proximity was having on him.
Walking away, he turned and signed ‘thanks’.
Returning later dressed in t-shirt and running trousers carrying socks and training shoes, he apologised again, ’sorry…………. managed everything else………….but I can’t get the bags off or the socks on………‘, he looked a little sheepish.
‘I had no idea it would be this hard to dress ………….. I tried a suit but couldn’t manage the zip or buttons…….. a shirt is a definite non-starter‘
Putting his socks on, she tied his laces and removed the bags, before placing coffee and food in front of him, as he put the sling back on.
‘Thanks, Sue………. Did you tell them where I was………………?’
‘I said I’d fetched you from the hospital but not why you were there…………….’
‘Why………………….?’ Jack was confused.
‘Because…………….., unless this dog that knocked you over was the size of a German Shepherd or a Labrador they will be laughing their socks off……………………., which incidentally I hope will be a good deal less smelly than the ones I just removed from your feet…………. If I’d told them, they would have had plenty of time to think up silly jokes and comments………………. This way I at least saved some of your dignity…………. so was it a big dog…………………….?’
Screwing up his face Jack had to admit it wasn’t, ‘I think he said it was some sort of Spaniel…………… but it was travelling at some speed to upend me like that…………..’
As he looked at Sue he wondered how she always looked so beautiful, even crawling around on the floor she was still stunning………… he loved her and had done for so long.
‘Nah………, she wouldn’t want a guy like me……….. she wants someone who can communicate with her……………. understand her, not someone who bumbles around with her language, who’s reduced to a gibbering wreck every time he sees her, incapable of coherent thoughts never mind coherent speech………………… certainly not a guy who is unable to even put his own socks on right now…………… heck, how am I gonna cope till the plaster comes off?’ Jack wondered silently.
‘Guess I need to ring mom, see if I can go there for a few weeks……………assuming I can fly…………certainly can’t drive………but then what do I do with Jess……guess I stay in DC and hope for the best………………’
Sue grinned at him, he really was going to take some stick from the team……………
‘So, why are we going to see this dog if you know her name……………? Why aren’t her owners going?’
‘I don’t, it was just what I called her………. when I was a kid we had a dog, a mix of everything……………… called Jesse………… she looks a bit like him, so I called her Jess………….. when you see her you’ll know she hasn’t got an owner…………..’
‘So, how’d you get her to the vet then…………..?’
‘She just sat and looked at me while I was on the floor, head on one side, tail wagging………………, I grabbed her, took her with me to the car, drove to the vet, left her there and drove to the hospital…………’
Sue was impressed, gotta love a guy in pain who takes the dog to the vet before he goes to the hospital.
‘Gonna keep her………….?’
‘I’d like to, see if anyone turns up for her…………. she’s really cute………. Levi would like her………………’
After loading the washing machine, Sue picked up the keys and they headed for the vets.

Chapter 4
Arriving at the vets, Sue fell in love with the little dog who was basically a bag of bones, she could see what Jack meant about no owner…………….
Jess was an English Cocker Spaniel, chestnut brown in colour with patches of white and the biggest, floppiest pair of ears and biggest brown eyes Sue had ever seen, even bigger than Jacks’ (eyes, not ears!!), but not quite so appealing.
‘She’s about 18 months old, she’s been done……no microchip…………. I guess she became too much trouble for someone and they dumped her……. If you don’t want to take her I can keep her here, Mr. Hudson…………… she’s had her shots today but will need more……………. I can give you special food so she doesn’t get an upset tummy………….. looks like she’s scavenged but not eaten properly for a while…………….’
The vet looked at Jacks’ arms and decided it probably wasn’t a great idea for him to take Jess, although the dog seemed to have other ideas as she was bouncing around, wagging her tail in excitement and barking at him, as well as running up to Levi and nipping him at the mouth.
Sue was still entranced with the little dog, who was now running between the three of them.
‘No………. I’ll keep her…………….. ‘ Jack bought a leash and other essential items which Sue carried to the car, before they all headed off to the pen.
Chapter 5
As Sue had predicted the team were far from sympathetic to Jacks’ plight, Bobby in particular was red in the face from laughing so hard, while Myles and D had to leave the pen and hide in the Conference Room so they couldn’t be seen crying with hysterical laughter.
Tara and Luce at least tried to be sympathetic about his broken arm but eventually they too were doubled up with laughter.
Watching his co-workers amuse themselves at his expense, Jack was grateful that at least Sue had been caring and supportive, although she too was grinning a little but he was unsure whether it was at his plight or their co-workers behaviour.
Looking over at her, he signed ‘team……….. crazy’ she nodded in sympathy, before making a suggestion she hoped he wouldn’t take the wrong way.
