Chapter 24

Walking into the pen before everyone else the following morning, they sat at their desks and buried themselves in paperwork.

Just before lunch, when both were beginning to wonder about the observational skills of their co-workers, Myles swept upon Sue and lifted her left hand in triumph.

‘You’ve finally done it then, Jack……. asked her the question we’ve waited more than 3 years for……………’

As the team looked up stunned and saw the ring, Luce squealed, ‘you’re engaged to some guy you’ve known for less than 2 months…………..’

‘No………. I’m engaged to a wonderful man I’ve known for more than 3 years……….’

‘But you said………..’ Luce began to mumble.

‘I told you I was dating this cute guy I met at the hospital…….. I just didn’t tell you I already knew him…………’ Sue grinned at the confused look on her friends’ face.

‘But you told me…………….’ Bobby began to mumble.

‘I told you there was someone and I was going to ask her when I was out of plaster…….. you assumed I meant to date………….. I meant I was going to ask her to marry me………………’

Luce rounded on Myles, ‘and you knew and didn’t tell me………..’

‘Luce, it was obvious they were dating………. I did try but you said you’d know if anything was going on……………….’

Grinning at the team, Jack and Sue signed ‘gotcha’

‘Well, I want to be the first to congratulate you………’

D held out his hand, pulling them each into a hug, remembering the time Jack had said he envied what D had with his family. Now he’d know the joys as well as the down times……….they were a great looking couple, made for each other and it was about time.

As the rest of the team congratulated them, Luce tried to wipe the smug smile off Myles’ face but without success.

‘Set a date yet, Sparky?’

Holding Sue’s hand, he suggested 3 months, ‘works for me, Jack……..’ if she was honest it was likely to be the longest 3 months of her life but definitely worth waiting for.

Returning to Jacks’ apartment that night after the team and Donna had taken them out for a meal to celebrate, they sat on the couch to make plans…… in between making out.

Looking over at their 2 dogs curled up together on the chair, they could have sworn they winked.

Gazing at each other, they shook their heads, ‘no………….., dogs don’t wink…………’

As they bent to engage in another kiss, Levi and Jess winked at each other again before drifting off to sleep, dreaming of chasing rabbits

The End

Wonderful end!!!! I love the surprise in Luce's and Bobby's faces

and I think the dogs definitely winked... maybe this whole action was set up by them

Yep. I have to say that I did have a hunch it would be Myles. He would be the perfect one to do so. He is very observant and he did pick up on the fact that they were dating when the others hadn't. I enjoyed how Lucy was thrown off the track. That wasn't easy.

Great story, lts. I enjoyed reading it as well as your other writing.
How about a continuation on this one. I bet you would write a good engagement story.

Wonderful ending, LTS!! I love the fact that Luce hadn't even guessed that they were dating!!!

Beautiful ending, LTS! I loved the way you had Myles discover the ring...they sure fooled Bobby and Lucy!!! And the dogs...sure they do wink!!

I wouldn't mind an epilogue or a sequel.....how 'bout that?

I really enjoyed this LTS, and the ending was so good. Loved how J/S were able to hide their relationship from Lucy, of all people and Bobby. And Myles got it first, Very cute. The proposal was wonderful and romantic. Thanks for sharing!

I loved your approach to Take These Broken Wings -- with the tie-in to the comment in "The Hunter" episode. I loved how Sue and Jack were able to fool Lucy and Bobby. I figured that it would be Myles that would notice the ring first. Great proposal, great ending! Thank you so much for sharing this great story with us!
