Chapter 1

It was 10 o'clock on Wednesday morning in the bullpen when Myles walked in with a big announcement. "Listen up, everyone!" Everyone turned their attention to Myles, not knowing what news he was bringing. Myles continued, "I was just informed that the F.B.I. is going to have a.....- what should I call it?- a contest, I suppose you could say."

"What kind of contest?" Bobby asked. There was that look on Myles face that said, A contest that I am going to win.

"A contest for the best F.B.I. agent of each unit," Myles answered.

"How is that going to work?" Sue asked.

"There's going to be a day sometime next week when the agents are going to vote for the best and you can vote for yourself."

Lucy, who was standing by Tara, whispered to her, "Well, at least he'll have the comfort of having at least one vote."

"And where did you hear about this, Myles?" Jack asked.

"I've got my connections. Anyway, what does that matter? You've got other things to worry about, including your campaign."

"Campaign? But shouldn't we just have them judge us as we are....as agents?" Sue asked.

"Myles just needs posters and pins and such in order to make him look good," Bobby said putting his arm around Myles' shoulder. Then he whispered, "But don't worry, Sue, you'll be just fine without it."

Myles shrugged off Bobby's arm and everyone began to laugh. Myles jaw tensed. But Sue's attention was drawn away by the blinking of her light, indicating the ringing of her phone. Pulling the mouthpiece in front of her, she answered, "Hello."

Sue read the words on her computer screen, Hello, Sue. This is dad.

Sue smiled and said, "Hi! How are you doing?"

Not so good.

Sue was troubled by the words. "What's wrong?"

Sue.....I don't know how to tell you this.

"Dad, what's wrong?" By now, the sound of her voice had caught everyone's attention. The room was very quiet.

Sue......your brother....Ryan....he's.....he's....

"He's what?" Sue watched with growing concern.

....he's dead.

Sue looked at the words over and over. It couldn't be true. But there it was. The knot in her throat was throbbing and she couldn't say anything. Her dad had hung up, he was probably feeling the same way she was.

"What is it?" Lucy asked, but Sue was unaware of her question. "Sue?" Lucy began to walk towards her. Levi put his paw on Sue's lap and it startled her. She looked at Lucy and she asked again, "Who was it? What's wrong?"

Sue stood up, feeling a bit light headed, told her. "It was my dad......My brother's dead." The room began to go dark and Sue could feel herself
falling backwards.

"Sue!" Jack and Lucy cried as they ran to her side. Jack put Sue's head on his lap and Tara ran to get some help while the rest of the room stood speechless. None of them could believe the words that Sue had spoken. They were F.B.I. agents and they had all heard of people dying...innocent people. People who had family...brothers and sisters. But this had gone deeper than that. Sue was his family....his sister.

Chapter 2

"I've got to go to Ohio," Sue said, frantically trying to pack her bags. She was now in her apartment with Lucy and Jack.

Jack grabbed her arm and made her face him, "You can't! What if a case comes up?"

"Then the rest of you will be here," Sue said as she began to turn around again. No sooner had she tried to do so that Jack turned her back around.

"What if we want to go with you?" Jack's gaze froze her and she couldn't move. Lucy watched as they stared at each other.

Sue, still staring at him, said, "Then I couldn't stop you."

Jack let her go and Lucy said, "I could use a vacation. Now I have a good excuse."

Lucy went to the phone and called up Tara. Jack pulled out his cell phone and called Bobby. The team had already discussed going- while Sue was unconscious- and D couldn't go and Myles didn't want to. So....the journey began.

Chapter 3

The plane lifted off the runway and Sue watched out the window as the ground got farther and farther away. Her breath on the window made it fog up. She wiped the window with her sleeve and sat back in her chair and shut her eyes. But that wasn't the only thing she shut....she also shut out the world.

"Is she okay?" Jack asked Lucy.

Turning toward him, Lucy answered, "I don't know. I'm getting kind of worried. She didn't eat at all yesterday and she isn't talking much."

Jack didn't want to admit it, but he was growing worried himself. "Her brother must have meant a lot to her," Jack said looking at Sue again.

"Yeah.....he did," Lucy said, she herself turning toward Sue.

Not much was said the rest of the flight which, in itself, was not that long. Soon they landed in Ohio and all five pairs of still legs unloaded the plane. After picking up their luggage and Levi from his kennel, they headed out of the airport.

"Are we going to stay with your family?" Tara asked Sue.

Sue, trying not to look depressed, said, "Actually, I wasn't able to get a hold of them, so they don't even know that we're here."

"So are we staying at a hotel or did you have someplace else in mind?" Bobby asked.

"Well, since I couldn't get a hold of my parents....I called..." Sue began before she was interrupted by Levi. Sue looked around until she saw her.

"Sue! Sue!" the woman called.

Sue smiled and ran to her yelling, "Molly!" They greeted each other with a greeting. The rest of the team slowly moved toward the reuniting friends.

"It's so good to see you! How was your flight?" Molly exclaimed, glad to see her friend again.

"Good. How have you been?" Sue said, Molly was a good distraction for her. Now she didn't have to think about Ryan's death.

The team was now standing around them. "Molly. These are my teammates. Jack. Lucy. Bobby. And Tara," Sue said, pointing to each accordingly. "D and Myles couldn't make it."

"It nice to meet you all," Molly said. "Any friends of Sue's are friends of mine."

"Nice to meet you too," they all said.

"Well....shall we go?" Molly said.

"Let's go!" they all excitedly said and off they went.

The solving of the mystery is soon to be unraveled.

Chapter 4

"How did you and Sue meet?" Lucy asked Molly. They were at Molly's house and everyone was getting settled.

"We met in college and have been good friends ever since. You must be Sue's roommate, Lucy," Molly said, as she shook her hand.

"That's me."

"Sue's told me so much about you."

"Do you know much about Ryan?" Lucy asked, taking things out of her bag.

"I should," Molly said. Sensing Lucy's confusion, continued, "Ryan and I dated for a time."

"Were Ryan and Sue close?"

"Yes, they were. Closer, that is, than she is with her other brothers."

Just then, Sue walked in and Lucy asked her, "Did you get a hold of your parents?"

"Just the answering machine," Sue answered. She grabbed her coat and said, "I think that I'm going to go over there and check it out." Jack was walking by and heard her say this. He could see from Lucy's face that she didn't want Sue to go alone. For her safety, of course.

Jack tapped Sue shoulder and offered, "Do you mind if I go with you?"

"I guess I could use some company," Sue said, truly thankful.

Jack smiled and grabbed his coat and they both headed out.
-----------------------------

Jack and Sue walked to her parents' house considering that it wasn't that far. When they apprached the house, they noted that there was a car in the driveway so presumably somebody was home. Sue walked up the porch and to the front door and knocked. No answer. She knocked again, but still no answer. She was about to knock again when Jack put his hand on her shoulder and motioned for her to be quiet-- in other words, he'd heard something. Sue looked around and saw nothing. Jack, with gun in hand, made his way off the porch and then around the house. Sue walked off the porch and started to follow where Jack had gone. But, before she got too far, she felt a hand come from behind and cover her mouth, preventing her from screaming.

She now regretted ever coming.

Chapter 5

"Hey, Luce!" Tara called into the living room where Lucy, Molly, and Bobby were watching a movie. "Where's Jack and Sue?"

"They went to check on her parents. Why?" Lucy asked.

"Don't you think that they should be back by now?" Tara asked.

Lucy looked at her watch. She hadn't realized how late it was. Not saying a word, the five of them grabbed their coats and headed out to find this house.

-------------------------------

After much searching, they finally found the right house and they walked up the porch and knocked on the door. No answer. They knocked again, still no answer. Lucy walked off the porch and looked for any sign that Jack and Sue had been there. "Hey you guys! Look at this!" Lucy said as she picked up the blackberry.

"Isn't that...." Bobby began.

"It's Sue's," Lucy said as she turned it over in her hands.

"What do you think happened?" Molly asked.

"I don't know, but I'm bound to find out," Lucy said.

Let's solve this thing!

Chapter 6

Jack sat there waiting for Sue to wake up. He watched as her eyes fluttered open. "Where am I?" she asked as she sat up, but she layed back down when pain shot up her back at into her head. She winced and her hand flew to the back of her head.

"Are you okay?" Jack said, helping her lower herself back to the floor.

"Yeah," Sue answered. "Where are we? What are we doing here?"

Jack looked around at the room. The floor was cement and the room had no ceiling so you could see the pipes running from one end to the other. The walls were dark paneling and it was cold and damp. "We're enjoying the hospitality of our beloved kidnappers," Jack tried to joke. But he could see that Sue wasn't in the mood. He looked deeply into her eyes. There was a sadness in them. But he expected it. She had lost her brother, she didn't know where her parents were, and now this.

"What happened?" Sue asked. She could only remember that someone had come up behind her and that she had been knocked out.

"I was rounding the corner of the house when I heard a noise. It came again and I knew what it was. It was you screaming so I turned around and I ran back only to be welcomed by some thugs who took me out. The next thing I know I wake up here."

"Why would they do this?" Sue asked.

"You know that case we were working on-what was it?-about a month ago where the guys that we were after disappeared into thin air?" Jack asked her.

"Yeah I remember," Sue answered.

"I got a glimspe of one of the kidnappers and I think that they're the same guys."

Sue didn't want to believe what Jack was saying......those guys were.....murderers.

Not good!

Chapter 7

"Are you alright?" Molly asked Lucy as she sat down next to her and handed her a cup of coffee.

"I just hope they're okay," Lucy said, taking the cup. She took a sip and set it on the table next to the couch and took the blackberry out of her pocket and turned it over in her hands. Levi walked up to them and put his head on the couch and whined. Lucy pet his head and said, "This isn't the first time that he's had to go through this. It'll be alright, buddy." She set the blackberry down and stood up. Before she got very far, Levi started barking. Lucy went back to see what was bothering him. She looked at the blackberry and picked it up. It was vibrating. The screen read, Archibald, Bob, Larry, and Junior.

Lucy's eyes widened. Molly, who was looking over her shoulder, asked, "VeggieTales characters?"

"Code names," Lucy simply said as she ran for the phone to call Bobby.

Molly saw her distress and asked, "What is it?"

"Murderers." Lucy's simple word sent chills down their backs. The pressure was officially on.

-------------------------------------

"I hope they get the message," Sue said to Jack. She was better than the day before and she was able to sit up.

"I do, too," Jack said as he put away his phone. He had been lucky that the bad guys hadn't taken it away. "We'll get out of this," Jack said, placing his hand on Sue's trying to comfort the worry that was evident in her eyes.

Sue looked at the hand and then looked up. "I hope so." Just as she said this she saw Jack look up and she turned her eyes towards where he was looking. She recognized him as the one they had named Archibald, the leader.

Jack asked him, "What do you want with us?"

He told them, "You'll see. By the way, there's someone I want you to meet. Oh, wait....you already know him." He turned to someone outside the door and motioned for them to come in.

Jack and Sue looked at each other, confused. They looked back to the door as someone was pushed into the room. Jack heard the man laugh and leave. Sue turned pale. She stared at the man who was lying on the ground, his breathing heavy. "What is it?" Jack asked her.

Sue turned her head towards him and said, "It's Ryan."

Chapter 8

"Is there any way that I can help?" Molly asked Lucy as she hung up the phone.

"Do you know many of the people around here?" Lucy replied.

"This is a rural area, maybe if I saw what they looked like I would recognize them."

"Bobby and Tara are on their way. I'll call Myles and have him send some pictures and you can take a look at them."

"What about this one?" Bobby asked Molly holding up the third picture.

"Yeah, I know him. He likes to hang out at the diner where I work," Molly said. "I went out with him a couple weeks back."

"So you know where he lives?" Tara said.

"Yeah."

"Well, what are we waiting for?" Lucy asked.

"Do you think you could bring us there?" Bobby asked Molly. Molly
nodded and they all headed out the door.

-------------------------

Bobby and Tara walked up to the door and knocked. Lucy and Molly watched them anxiously. "Do you think anyone's home?" Lucy asked Molly.

"I don't know," Molly said.

Bobby and Tara stood for awhile before knocking again. They heard footsteps coming towards the door. It opened and a man stood at the door. "Joshua Hart?" Bobby asked.

"Yes?" the man replied, indicating that that was his name.

"We're with the F.B.I., we would like to ask you a few questions," Bobby said. He would've liked to arrest him, but he couldn't without a warrant.

"If this is about the drug dealings," Josh said frantically, "I'm through with that."

"Then maybe you could help us to find the men you were working with," Tara said.

"I....I could try," he said.

The clock is ticking.
*stfbeyerocks*
Chapter 9

"Ryan?" Sue said kneeling next to him.

"Sue? What are you doing here?" he asked her as he sat up.

"I was going to ask you the same thing."

"Where do I begin?"

"At the beginning," Sue said.

"Well, it started about a week ago when I had gone to celebrate with a couple of my friends. I went a little overboard and some guys next to me started talking about the FBI. Me, not being in my right mind, started talking about my little sister who was an agent. That's when the trouble started. They brought me here and called up mom and dad, told them that I was dead. They knew that they would call you and that you would come here."

"How did they know that?" Jack asked.

"I told them."

"Why?"

"Because I'm a coward," Ryan lashed out. He wasn't proud of the way he had acted.

Sue, trying to get somewhere, asked, "Why didn't mom and dad answer their door?"

"That I don't think I could tell you. I don't know myself. As for the rest of the story, you already know. You were the team that was hot on their tail and they disappeared to here of all places. That's why you're here."

Sue nodded, it now made sense. She only hoped that the rest of the team could solve this before it was too late.

--------------------------------------

Jack, Sue, and Ryan sat in silence, none of them knowing what they should say. The only thing that could be heard was the running of water in the pipes that ran above them.

Jack looked over at Ryan. Sue had told him why they were so close. When Sue had won something he was always the one to make her feel the best about it. Even when she lost, he was always the one to help her to remember that she 'would do better next time' or 'it's not if you win or lose that matters, it's how you play the game'. The fact that they were the two youngest also helped with the fact that they were like best friends. They both had the same favorite holiday....Easter. That was one reason why Sue had been so heartbroken when she thought he had died. She thought that they weren't going to be able to celebrate this Easter together.

Jack's thoughts were interrupted when he heard the door open. Three pairs of eyes turned toward the man who stood there. The man turned to the other man that stood next to him and whispered, "We can't waste any more time. We just got word that Josh is helping them and they'll be here soon. Get the rest of the men ready to leave. We're getting out of here."

Sue could see what they were saying and relayed the information to Jack. Jack was thankful that the team had pieced things together. Sue tried to see what the man said as he hid his face behind the door slightly. "I couldn't see what he said," she told Jack.

One of the men came from behind 'Archibald' and headed toward Sue. He grabbed her and almost on cue, both Ryan and Jack started to move to stop him. Just then, 'Archibald' pulled out a gun, stopping them in their tracks and said, "Don't try and follow us, that is unless of course you have a death wish." Sue struggled to be free of the man's grip, but her struggle was worth nothing. He wouldn't let go. The two men walked backwards out the door and as soon as they did, Ryan rushed after them.

"Ryan, don't!" Jack yelled after him, but it was too late. Jack heard the gunshot and then soon following heard Ryan groan in pain and Sue's scream. Jack waited-so as not to get shot himself- before he went to find him. Jack found Ryan sprawled on the floor, blood flowing from his stomach down to the floor. Jack winced at the sight. "Ryan," he said kneeling beside him. Ryan reached his hand up and Jack took it.

Ryan struggled to breath as he said, "Jack...promise me....that you'll take care of her.....Promise me!"

"I promise," Jack said.

Ryan squeezed Jack's hand and continued with the last bit of life he had left in him, ".....Tell her.... ...that...... I'm.........I'm...................sorry.........................and..............to live....her.......life." With these words, he breathed his final breath and his eyes closed, life leaving his body. Everything became limp and Jack took the hand and slowly lowered it by Ryan's side. Jack looked up when he heard someone running toward him. He stood up to see Sue and behind her Bobby, Tara, Lucy, and Molly. Sue gasped and put her hand to her mouth and shook her head, she didn't want to believe it was true. Tears started to stream down her face.

Jack moved toward her to try and comfort her, "I'm sorry."

Sue moved away, turned around and ran. Jack stood there for awhile and looked at the others. Seeing that no one else was going to run after her, he decided to.

Sniffle, sniffle.
*stfbeyerocks*
Chapter 10

"Sue," Jack said softly, not knowing if she wanted his company. Sue stood at the decoration bridge that went over a small man-made stream, flowers surrounding it. The setting sun was reflecting on the water.

"I don't understand. I came here because I thought he was dead. No sooner do I find out that he's not then he's taken away," Sue said through her tears.

Jack stood next to her and said, "I'm not going to tell you that I know what you're feeling because I don't. But Ryan wanted me to tell you that he was sorry for what he did. And I am going to tell you that life goes on. I'm not saying that you should forget what happened. But don't let your sadness consume you."

"Why love someone if losing them hurts so much?" Sue said, turning toward him, the tone of her voice was demanding. She had so many questions and she wanted so many answers. She turned back to the water.

Jack took Sue's shoulders and faced her to him. "We love to know that we are not alone." Sue began to sob and Jack held her in his arms. Sue knew Jack was right in what he said, but she also knew that she couldn't do it alone. Jack grabbed her shoulders again, making sure that she could read his lips. "What are you going to do?"

Sue wiped her tears with her sleeve and replied, "I was thinking of staying here for awhile. I think that my parents need me right now." She also thought that she needed them.

Jack, as much as he didn't want her to stay, nodded. He only wanted her to be happy.

------------------------------------

"Isn't Sue coming?" Tara asked Jack as they were about to board the plane.

Jack turned to the entrance of the airport as Sue walked farther and farther away. "No," Jack replied and turned back around and stepped on the plane.

Jack stared out the window as they lifted off. Ryan's words were ringing in his head, Jack, promise me that you'll take care of her. Promise me!

Jack was going to keep that promise.....somehow.
*stfbeyerocks*
Chapter 11

Jack walked in the bullpen that Wednesday morning and was greeted by Levi. He had the comfort of knowing that Sue would have to come back for him. It's been a week since the last time I was here, Jack remembered. As Jack walked in, Myles asked, "Where's Thomas?" Myles had gotten so used to Jack and Sue coming in at the same time every morning.

Jack said, "She stayed behind.....in Ohio."

"Oh," Myles said, seeing the sad expression that Jack wore and, he
noticed, that everyone else wore as they walked in.

Bobby asked Myles as the morning wore on, "So, how did that contest go?"

Myles nervously cleared his throat and said, "We voted yesterday." He paused before he added, "A couple of the rules changed."

"What do you mean?" Jack asked him. Myles comment had caught the attention of everyone in the room.

"It changed from being the best agent in the unit to the best agent in the building," Myles replied.

"Who won?" Bobby asked.

"They haven't announced it yet. But they're going to in"-Myles looks at his watch- "approximately 10 minutes."

"What are we waiting for?" Tara asked, she was eager to know who had won this thing.

Everyone got up from their seats and headed out the door. Jack lingered behind for a second, staring at Sue's desk. He only wished that she could be there to share in this, too.

-----------------------------------------

Tons of agents were gathered to hear this announcement. The crowd buzzed with excitement. Everyone was silenced when they heard someone speak into the microphone, "May I have your attention please? The votes have been counted and they are unanimous. According to the agents and workers of this building, the best FBI agent in this building is Sue Thomas." Applause filled the air, but Jack, Bobby, Tara, Lucy, Myles, and Dimitrius looked at each other. They all knew that Sue wasn't there to receive this award and she may never be. The announcer repeated, "Sue Thomas."

Jack made his way through the crowd and went to the podium and told the announcer the situation. He then moved to the microphone and said, "I regret to inform you that Su....." Jack stopped and his eyes became wide. No one knew why. But seeing that Jack was staring toward the back of the room, everyone followed his gaze. To their surprise, they saw Sue as she walked in. Jack stepped down and made his way through the crowd and finally reached her.

"I thought....you were staying in Ohio." Jack said, confused.

"I thought that I could go on without anyone. But then I realized that I needed someone by my side to get me through everything and I couldn't find that back in Ohio. I realized that.....I needed the team....that.....I need you," Sue said.

Jack wanted to hold her in his arms and kiss her. But seeing the sea of people staring at them, he remembered. "Come with me." Jack took her hand and led her towards the front of the room.

"Jack, what's going on?" she asked as he pulled her along.

Jack stepped up to the microphone and said, repeating the words of the announcer, "According to the agents and workers of this building, the best FBI agent in this building is Sue Thomas." He turned to her and applauded with everyone and motioned for her to come up to say a few words.

After the applause had died. Sue began, "I don't know what to say." She spotted the team's faces in the crowd. "Even though this is a great honor I have to say that without my team I wouldn't have made it this far. And as they know.... my brother died yesterday and nothing has been harder for me to come face to face with." Sue began to choke up, but with a deep sigh she continued. "I only ask for God to take these broken wings and mend them so that I no longer fall when I try to fly. So that, when I'm ready, when the grief of my loss has passed me by, I may feel joy once again. Little by little, with every bit of joy, add a feather here and another there. I will fly again," Sue concluded. Everyone applauded. Although nobody knew it, the votes had ALL been for Sue.

I will fly again. With time, she did.
