I feel like I have personally met their children. Like all famlies, the children are so different, but in this case you can tell they have the anchor that comes from being raised in a loving, stable home.

Grrrrrr Stupid computer, I had the next post all ready to go and the computer decided to eat it
Anyway let me try again!!!
SophChapter 7 - Infants, Part 1Sue noticed that her daughter in law wasn’t with everyone else, so she slipped away to try to find her. She went into the garden first and her two grandsons rushed up to her eager to drag her into the game they were playing. They had a tendency to talk at the same time and very quickly and at their age their language wasn’t the easiest to understand. She watched their mouths moving, and caught the odd word here and there but couldn’t make any sense of what they were saying. When they appeared to have finished talking she spoke to them,
“Guys, remember what we talked about, Grandma can’t hear what you are saying and when you talk really fast I can’t read your lips very well. Can we say that again, one at a time and slower?” The boys looked at their grandma and nodded, and then Jeremy started talking,
“Grandma, will you play with us, Jacob is tired and doesn’t want to play anymore and we can’t play ball without a grown up as we is too small!” Sue looked across and saw her current hearing dog lying under a tree, panting. The boys had worn him out!
She looked back down to the small boys and knew she couldn’t refuse them, “I just want to check on mummy and Elizabeth and then I’ll be back. Why don’t you go and sit next to Jacob and rest for a while and I’ll bring out some lemonade for us when I come back.” She knew the chances were that if the two boys sat down in the shade they would fall asleep, they had been charging round most of the morning. They looked up at their grandma and nodded, and headed over to where Jacob lay. She watched them disappear thinking how much they were like their parents when they were small.
Peter and Katy were both teaching their children sign language, but as they didn’t need to use it on a daily basis it was difficult. Toddlers weren’t the easiest people to teach it too anyway, she remembered the issues they had with their three when they were that age. They worked out that the best way was for them to constantly sign and speak at the same time, that way the children would pick it up like they did English. Jack’s signing improved rapidly at that time as well, as he had to sign all the time. He was good before then, but by the time Peter went to school he was fluent! Over the years the two of them had often just signed to each other when they were alone. When the kids were smaller and their parents would come down for a few days, the two of them would take the opportunity to go away together for a couple of days. These times were precious and they would often spend them in silence just signing when they communicated. The problem Katy and Peter had with their kids was they didn’t use sign language everyday all the time, their partners knew the odd word, but not enough to communicate properly. In their everyday lives they didn’t need to use it so they didn’t. It didn’t worry Sue, she hoped none of them ever had to learn as it, as it would mean one of their children was deaf and as much as she knew no one would even think it was her fault, she would blame herself.
She moved back into the house and upstairs, finding Hannah feeding her daughter in what used to be the nursery. She was sat on the window seat, Elizabeth in her arms, looking out the window, looking completely at peace. Sue didn’t want to disturb her but as she turned to go she noticed her daughter in law’s arm move out of the corner of her eye. She turned and saw her waving her in.
“Come in Sue,”
“You sure, you looked so peaceful sitting there, I didn’t want to disturb you”
“You aren’t disturbing me, I was just looking out at the view from this window, and thinking how peaceful it is sitting here.”
“I used to feed all my children here, especially at night. It was so relaxing sitting there looking out the window.”
“I can see why!”
Sue sat opposite Hannah and let her mind drift back to when her children were babies.
For the first couple of weeks after her and Peter returned from the hospital, whenever he cried, Jack would inevitably get to him first, both in the day and at night. By the time Levi alerted Sue, Jack was already there and had picked him up. Sue had never forgotten how frustrated she had felt during that first week. She was convinced she was a bad mother because she couldn’t hear her child cry. Half way through the second week it all got too much and one evening when Jack picked him and took him back to Sue he found her in floods in tears, completely inconsolable. Luckily Peter wasn’t hungry so he changed him and put him back in his cot. He then rang Lucy at work and asked her if she could come and sit with him for a couple of hours.
Jack went back to Sue and found her still crying. He took her in his arms but she fought him. He didn’t give in though and she gave in and collapsed into his arms. He held her there, rubbing her back and stroking her hair, trying to calm her down, having no idea what the problem was. By the time Lucy arrived she had calmed down. He eased her out of his arms and explained that it was Lucy before going down to let her in.
As he headed downstairs Sue moved into Peter’s room and looked at her son lying there peacefully. Her heart was so full of love for him but she knew she couldn’t be a mother to him, she couldn’t hear him cry. She started tearing up as she stood there watching him. She stroked her hand along his cheek and took his tiny hand in hers. It was here that Jack found her, he put his arms around her and turned her around.
Signing to her, he said, “Lucy is going to keep an eye on Peter for a couple of hours, he shouldn’t need feeding and if he does then we will only be five minutes away and I will have my cell phone. We need to talk, and we won’t talk properly here. Please will you come?”

Chapter 7 - Infants Part 2
Sue looked up at him and saw the worry in his eyes and her initial refusal died on her lips. He knew her well enough and she had to trust him, Peter was his son too and he was a fantastic dad, he would make sure he was OK.
She nodded and turned to kiss her son on the forehead, before going and tidying herself up. 10 minutes later they were sitting in the car driving to a nearby park that was a favourite place of theirs. Jack parked up and they walked down to their favourite place by the river. Jack took her hand and she grabbed on to it like a lifeline. She remembered thinking that as long as Jack still loved her she could get through anything.
They sat down, next to each other, Sue leaning on Jack, needing his contact. He turned her so she could see his face and started signing and speaking.
“Sue, what is wrong, please don’t fob me off with nothing, something is wrong and we need to sort it out. Tell me what you are feeling, please?” She couldn’t hear the feeling in his voice but could see it in his eyes. She knew she had to be honest with him, however it was going to be hard, admitting her worst fear to Jack meant she had to admit it to herself.
She nodded at him and saw him relax. She started signing, “Jack you and Peter are the most important things in my life, you know that right?” He nodded and leant forward to kiss her forehead, knowing she needed the reassurance of his love.
Sue continued, “When I first found out I was pregnant, I was so happy, what I had always wanted had finally happened, I was going to have my own family. It was something I never dreamt would actually happen but it was what I wanted most of all. You made that happen Jack and I was determined to never let you down. After the initial happiness wore off and we started to feel the baby move the worries started to creep in, how would I manage, how would I know if they were hungry, or needed changing, or just crying. How would I know if they were trying to get my attention. Those worries faded when we spoke to the Hearing Dogs people who explained that Levi could be trained to let me know. By then the excitement was back, we were buying clothes, preparing the nursery, and that took over. When Peter was born and I first saw him I thought my heart would explode. I was so happy. In the hospital everything was fine, but it was an artificial environment. However the last couple of weeks, those doubts have come back Jack. I can’t be a good mother to him, I can’t hear him cry, I don’t know when something is wrong, what happens when you go back to work and I am left alone with him.” Sue stopped as she was crying hard again. Jack pulled her into his arms again and soothed her. When she stopped, he pulled away from her, “Thank you for telling me. Trust me you are a good mother, and we will work through this. I thought I was helping by going to him, but maybe I wasn’t. We will sort this out, I promise and I won’t go back to work until you are happy you can cope. You will cope Sue because you love our son and you want to cope. We will find the answer I promise.” Sue watched as the tears flowed down Jack’s face as well. They ended up in each other’s arms again and stayed there for a while, just enjoying being together. Sue felt Jack’s phone vibrating and he pulled it out of his pocket and answered it.
“Lucy hi!”
“Ok we are on our way. See you soon”
"Peter has woken up and is starting to get cranky,” Jack didn’t need to finish as Sue was up and heading back to the car. He caught up with her and took her hand. He signed into it “I Love You”. She slowed down and turned to face him. “Thank you Jack for listening and understanding, I love you too.” And she leant in and kissed her husband tenderly.
Back at the house Sue fed Peter and Jack thanked Lucy. As he saw her out he explained that Sue would give her a ring soon. Whilst Sue was feeding Peter Jack rang the health visitor and explained the situation to her. She offered to come round that evening and he accepted knowing they had to sort this out now. When Sue reappeared downstairs Jack told her what he had done. Sue knew he had done the right thing and accepted it. Jack tried to persuade Sue to go to bed until she got here, knowing she must be tired, but she refused. They sat down on the sofa and the next thing Sue knew Jack was waking her up as the health visitor had arrived.

Chapter 7 - Infants - Part 3
They explained the situation to her, and she listened without interrupting. When they had finished talking she started speaking, making sure she was facing Sue.
“First of all I want to reassure you Sue, that having seen you with Peter I know you are good mother and are going to continue being a good mother. I also know that Jack is a good father and again will continue to be a good father. Sue your emotions are all over the place at the moment because of your hormones. Any feelings you have of despair or helplessness are going to be multiplied, however any feelings of happiness are also multiplied. This should be starting to calm down soon though. That doesn’t mean those feelings will go away unless we deal with the source of them though. Now here is what I want you to do. Jack you have to stop picking Peter up when he cries. I know you think you are helping but as you have probably realised by now you aren’t. Let Levi alert Sue that he is crying, and then let her reach him first and deal with the situation. This is going to be hard on you as you also can’t react to him crying. Sue has to learn to trust Levi and herself. Can you try that?” they nodded, Sue knowing Jack would find it hard, but knowing he would do it because it was what was required.
“Good, now after a couple of days or once Sue is more comfortable then Jack you can start going to Peter as well. However you need to work it out between you, Jack you can’t go everytime, but equally you can’t leave it all to Sue. I can’t tell the right way to go about this, you need to work it out for yourselves, like all other new parents! At night I want you to do the same thing Jack, Sue needs to trust Levi will wake her up. Again once you are comfortable then you need to work out a way of dealing with the nights. Does that make sense?”
Again they both nodded. What she was saying seemed so simple they were embarrassed they hadn’t seen it for themselves. But they were both tired and emotional and in Sue’s case hormonal as well.
“What I also suggest is getting in contact with some of the deaf parents support groups. I know you are active members of the deaf community, try talking to some of the parents there, see how they cope, they may be able to come up with suggestions for things. Once of best gadgets there is for both deaf and blind parents are the baby monitors that vibrate. If you haven’t already got one or aren’t using one now, use it. Keep it on you Sue, and it will give you that extra feeling of safety.”
She continued to talk about various other options and kept reassuring them that they were no different to most other new parents. By the time she left a good hour after she arrived they both felt better about everything. Sue knew that for Jack the next couple of days were going to be hard. The first time Peter cried Sue knew something was up as Jack’s head moved, however he didn’t move and within a minute Levi appeared and nudged Sue.
The next few days went well, Sue knew Jack found it hard and by the end of the second day she assured him that she was comfortable with the situation. Early the next morning Levi woke Sue up and she went in and picked up her son. She sat with him on the window seat and started to feed him. As she looked out the window watching the sun start to rise she knew deep inside that everything would turn out OK. There was no feeling in world like feeding a sleepy baby and she felt guilty that this was something Jack couldn’t experience. Jack hadn’t even fed his son yet, Sue realised with a pang of guilt, he went to him when he was hungry but always handed him over to Sue. She decided that she would start expressing her milk into bottle so that Jack could feed him.
That morning she got up early and found Peter awake, she changed him and took him downstairs with her as she made breakfast, hoping that if he started crying she would know before Jack woke up. She took Peter upstairs and put him on the bed next to Jack in his carrier. She then went down to get the breakfast. Jack was just awaking up as she returned and she greeted him with a morning kiss. He took Peter out of the carried and held him, Sue’s heart melting as she looked at them together. As Peter started getting crotchety he went to pass him over to her, however she stopped him and handed him a bottle of milk she had expressed earlier.
“What’s this?”
“Breast milk, I expressed it earlier so you could feed him.”
Jack took the bottle and checked the temperature before putting the bottle into his son’s mouth. Peter started feeding straight away and when Sue saw the look on her husband’s face she knew she had done the right thing.
After those few days things were fine and despite the odd problem, they managed well. They applied the same things to when Katy was born but because Peter was around had to refine them slightly. By the time Tom was born both Peter and Katy were old enough to understand that crying meant Tom needed mummy and she had three alerters, Levi, Peter and Katy!!!
Her favourite times were still the early mornings though when it was her and the baby sitting in the window seat. She felt completely content at those times and knew this was what she dreamt about and believed she would never get.
Sue aroused herself from her memories, remembering her two elder grandchildren in the back yard.
“I had better go and check on the boys, I promised them lemonade and a game!” she joked as she stood up. Hannah nodded, “I’ll be down soon, she has nearly finished” Sue nodded and headed back downstairs, she fixed the lemonade for the boys and headed out to garden. As she approached the tree there was no movement from the boys, they were asleep. She smiled to herself and put the drinks down next to them on the tray. She knew they wouldn’t sleep for long and they would come and find her when they woke up. She walked back upto the house and found everyone was else was still rooting through boxes.

Chapter 8 – The Team
There were now more piles as the kids put to one side the things they wanted to keep whilst there was another pile of stuff to be binned. They had nearly gotten through half the boxes, which wasn’t bad going since they spent as much time reminiscing as they did sorting. By about 4pm they came to a natural stop for the day and they headed outside into the afternoon sun. The two boys had woken up and were playing with some old building blocks that had been found in one of the boxes. Tom sat down and helped them with what they were building whilst the others sat and relaxed. After the long cold winter it was nice to enjoy a sunny afternoon.
They decided to have a BBQ that evening, so Sue, Katy and Tom headed the supermarket to buy the meat whilst Jack, Peter and Michael got the BBQ ready. Hannah went for a sleep, as she was still tired from feeding Elizabeth every couple of hours.
As Jack got the BBQ out he thought back over the BBQs that they had had over the years. During the summer months when the kids were small they had often had BBQs especially on weekends and at the end of particularly trying cases. The whole team and families came round and they all relaxed and enjoyed each other’s company outside of work. There was one particular one that always stood out – it was held at the end of one of the toughest cases they had had to crack and bizarrely signalled the end of the team.
The team started arriving about 3pm. They had had a late finish yesterday and everyone had gone home and gone straight to bed. They spent the morning with their families before all congregating round Jack and Sue’s. D and Donna were the first to arrive. They were kidless now as both Davey and Tanya were at college. D had climbed the promotion ladder fairly quickly once he became supervisor after they had solved that case and ended up as Assistant Director Ops before retiring 10 years ago. He and Donna still lived in the DC area and occasionally the four of them would meet up for dinner.
Then came Myles and Rebecca, with the twins. Myles had met Rebecca through one of their cases about 5 years beforehand and they had fallen in love. Myles was like a new person since he had met Rebecca and become a father. His family became more important to him and he had decided to move across to the fine art department when the twins were couple of years old. He had ended up heading up the fine art team and producing some of the best agents in that department the FBI had known.
Bobby and Tara and their three kids arrived next, the oldest two were slightly younger than Peter and Katy, whilst their youngest was slightly older than Tom. The kids were friendly with each other at that age as they spent quite a bit of time together. A couple of years after the BBQ Bobby’s mum had become ill and the family moved to Australia. They still lived out there, both them having gotten jobs in the Australian police force. They loved the lifestyle there and though they often came back for holidays it had been apparent many years ago that they were going to remain in Australia. They had kept in touch through email and when they came back for holidays, the family inevitably ended up staying with Jack and Sue. The first place Jack and Sue were going to visit on their trip was Sydney where they were based.
Last to arrive was a heavily pregnant Lucy and her husband Geoffrey. She had met him at a friend’s wedding and it had been love at first sight. Within a year they were married and 6 months later Lucy was pregnant, it really was a whirlwind romance, however Lucy had never been happier and Geoff was a great bloke. Lucy continued working for Jack throughout his career at the FBI and her and Sue were still best friends. Their kids were good mates as well but grew up in different areas of town and had grown apart once they were old enough not to go with their parents when they met up.
That afternoon was like many previous ones they had shared as a team, they sat around and chatted, enjoying each other’s company, watching the kids play. It was a comfortable feeling, they all knew each other so well and had shared so much together.
Sue watched as a look of sadness passed across Jack’s face, she walked over to him at the BBQ.
“You OK,” she signed, “You didn’t look too happy just then.”
Jack smiled at his wife, still amazed that she had chosen to spend her life with him, “Fine just thinking of that last BBQ we had, as a team. None of us knew then how much our lives were going to change, we assumed we would be working together for a long time!” Jack paused reflecting on the changes that had happened to the team.
“Things changed quickly didn’t they, still I don’t think any of us regret the paths we took, we all made the decisions we made for the right reasons, I would make the same choices again, wouldn’t you?”
Jack nodded, “Definitely, I’d like to think I made a difference in my stint as AD, I know D did, and you have a whole department named after you!” Sue blushed at that comment, and Jack smiled, still loving how he could make his wife blush after 30 years!

Chapter 9
The next day Jack woke up before his wife and lay there and watched her sleep. It was something he had done often during their marriage and he never tired of looking at the beautiful woman he married. Sue stirred and opened her eyes, to see Jack’s eyes looking down on her. She could still get lost in those eyes, even after thirty odd years together. He leant down and kissed her good morning. The next thing they knew was Jacob on top of them, licking them both at the same time.
“Get off you silly dog, we are awake!” Jack said pushing the dog off the bed.
“I can’t believe this dog never knew Levi, his timing is just as good” Jack said remembering the hundreds of times Levi seemed to interrupt them when they really didn’t want to be interrupted. Sue smiled sadly remembering her beloved Levi.
Jacob was her third hearing dog after Levi and Ruth. Levi had been retired about 5 years after they married as his legs were giving out and he couldn’t manage all the walking, he had however remained as family pet and all three children loved him. He had died peacefully in his sleep a couple of years later. By this time though, Ruth was a member of the family and proving herself as a more than capable replacement for Levi, but for Sue she just wasn’t Levi. Levi would always occupy a special place in her heart as he was her first hearing dog, he was the one thing that allowed her to take her steps towards complete independence. Without him she knew she never would have gone to Washington. If she hadn’t moved to DC, she would never had met Jack and they would have had the life together they had. However Levi was more than just her independence. He was her confidante, in those first few years in Washington she would often talk to Levi at the end of the day. He was more than a dog to her, he was her best friend. Jack understood the relationship she had with Levi and she knew he had a special one with him as well. Levi knew Jack was special from that first day. He greeted him like a long lost friend every time he saw him. They shared a common bond in their love for Sue. Looking back Sue realised that Levi knew something was between the two of them, long before they did!
They got up and breakfasted and sorted through some more of their boxes whilst they waited for the family to turn up again. The boxes they had decided to keep were stacked in a corner of the office, as there was no point in putting them back in the attic as they would just have to come down again. The kids had taken some boxes with them when they had headed home the previous day, which left a bit more space to go through what was left. Sue started rummaging through the boxes and came across a box of toys. Inside were dolls and cars, lego and teddy bears. It was the children’s toys they had kept through the years.
Before Christmas every year Sue and Jack would help their children sort through their toys. They had to put to one side at least three toys each that would be handed onto children with much less than them on Christmas Day. Jack and Sue called it making way for their new toys, and whilst the children didn’t always do it with the goodwill they should have, in fact there used to be a lot of moaning about it, they always came away with 9 presents that other children would appreciate. One Christmas Jack and Sue took them to the Children’s home they gave the presents to on Christmas Day to show them who benefited from their presents. They spent Christmas Day there and all the children were quiet on the way home.
The following Christmas there wasn’t as nearly as much fuss as there had been about giving up their old toys.
The toys in the box were the toys that had never been given away, they were favourites of the children as they grew up, despite the fact that most of them were from when they were very small.
She jumped as she felt someone’s arm on hers.
“Sorry mum, didn’t mean to scare you!” Sue watched as Tom signed to her.
“No problem, partly my fault I was miles away!” she joked.
“Hey that is my teddy from years ago, I thought it had been thrown out years ago, what else is in here?” Sue stepped back as she watched her youngest son, rummage through the box, dragging out his old toys. His brother and sister soon appeared by his side, he had obviously shouted for them and the three of them were soon remembering their favourite childhood toys.
Once they had finished with the toys then it was the turn of school books, both exercise and text. Most of these ended up on the to be binned pile but there were the occasional essay or exercise book that Sue noticed was smuggled into a bag or box that was heading home. Katy unearthed some of Peter’s early match reports from her soccer games and took herself off to a corner to relive past glories whilst Tom found his first world map with all the places he had visited marked in one colour and all those he wanted to visit in another. Sue watched her son pull it out and lay it on the table and study it intently, his finger roaming over countries and continents.
The morning seemed to fly by as the children relived their school days. They had come by themselves today, their partners and children staying at home. By lunchtime all of the school boxes had been sorted through and the children had claimed anything else they wanted from the other boxes. They stayed for lunch and then headed back home to spend Sunday afternoon with their families or in Tom’s case asleep and on the computer researching his next trip. As they left Jack and Sue waved them off and headed back inside. Jack started moving the stuff they were keeping into the spare room and Sue headed up to the attic to see what was left up there, after they had removed all the boxes. As she poked her head through the hole she was surprised to notice how big it was up there without all the boxes. She climbed into the attic and walked around checking corners for anything they may have left behind. There was nothing there and she stood in the middle, wrapped up in thoughts of the memories that had been stored up in the attic for 30 years. Spring Cleaning had certainly lived up to it’s name this year as she thought of the many boxes piled up for the bin men and the many more heading back to other houses and attics, however it had been more than a physical act, they had also Spring Cleaned their memories, leaving those they didn’t like towards the back or throwing them out, and bringing the good ones to the front and revisiting them. It had been an interesting weekend and hopefully things and memories had been passed on to the next generation so that in 30 years time, they could pass on their own during their own Spring Cleaning.
The End!!!

Wonderful story, Soph ... even if STFBE never comes back (fingers and toes crossed), I think I'll hang on to these memories.

Beautiful! It sounds like they did a marvelous job raising those children. Now they enter a new stage of their life, and luckily the human mind can expand to make room for even more memories!!!

Well, Soph, I finally caught up with this wonderful story...
I couldn't possibly quote everything I loved about it but a part that really touched me was the one about Sue and little Peter and her problem in 'hearing' him crying, it was very realistic and I loved the way they handled it.
Thank you for a wonderful story!
