Spring Cleaning

Myles slammed the file cabinet drawer shut and glanced wistfully out the window. After weeks of constant rain and snow, spring had finally made an appearance. Outside, the sun was bright, beckoning the beleaguered agent to come and partake of the beautiful day.

Inside, a stack of paperwork needing completion loomed before him. Taking a quick look at his watch, he breathed a sigh of relief, it was almost lunch time. Another look at his desk confirmed that if he took a quick lunch, perhaps ran down to the cafeteria for a tuna sandwich, he could be out of the office by four-thirty, five at the latest.

His gaze returned to the window, the sun urging him to step outside, if only for a few minutes to enjoy its rays.

“Myles?”

He turned at the sound of Tara’s voice. She was standing behind him, holding a large stack of files. Assuming she needed to use the file cabinet, he moved out of her way, only to trip over the trashcan someone had placed there. His arm was seized by the petite computer expert and she helped him to right himself.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to startle you,” she told him apologetically.

“It’s okay; I was just distracted by the feeling of Friday, and a sunny Friday at that.” He bent down to help her retrieve the files she had dropped on the floor. “What are all of these?”

“My 302s for February, March, and April.”

A dawning look of horror began to spread across his face. “Do you mean…” he trailed off, unable to continue.

“Yeah, I decided that my paperwork drawer needed a little spring cleaning,” she smiled at him mischievously.

“But this is at least a days worth of work.”

“D said he needs them by Monday.”

Myles’ look of horror was rapidly turning into one of ire. “Why can’t you give some of them to Jack and Bobby?” he seethed through gritted teeth. “They lost the bet too.”

“Well, Bobby’s out working on a case with vice, and Jack has his own problems,” she smiled and pointed towards Jack’s desk, where Sue was handing over her own stack of paperwork.

“Fine!” Myles seized the files from Tara. “A Leland never welshes on a bet!” He slammed them down on his desk and sat heavily in his chair. He stared sulkily at the stack before reaching for the top file. Grimacing, he opened it.

Tara grinned happily at the scene before her then went over to join Sue. She noticed that Jack was wearing an expression similar to Myles’. Laughing she beamed at her pretty blond friend. “Aren’t you glad our little ‘covert operation’ worked?”

Sue nodded. “We’d better get out of here before things get ugly,” she laughed softly. “Want to go shopping?”

Tara nodded. Smiling one last time at their harassed coworkers, the women made a hasty exit. The minutes passed by quietly as the men became immersed in the work before them.

“Hey Jack?” Myles queried, looking up from the report in front of him.

“Yeah?” Jack replied vaguely, staring at something on his computer screen.

“Did you work on the Layton case with Tara? She forgot to attach the phone log to this file.”

He was quiet for a minute. “No, Bobby did, the report is probably somewhere over there,” waving his hand at the jumbled mess that was their colleague’s desk.

Muttering under his breath, Myles went over to Bobby’s desk and began thumbing through the papers strewn across it. Soon he moved from the desk top to the drawers. Cursing with each passing minute, he finally yanked open the bottom drawer. His features went slack with shock before contorting in fury.

“Jack, you need to come and look at this!”

Grimy and tense, Bobby arrived at the deserted Bullpen, bone tired, and well after quitting time. The case for vice hadn’t gone very well; he was happy that the weekend was upon him. It would give him time to catch up on a little shuteye. He stretched lazily and smiled at the thought of some extra sleep. Brightening, he headed to his desk to retrieve a “prize”. He could use a quick pick me up. Pulling out his chair to sit down, he stopped short when he noticed that it was already occupied.

Two large stacks of files where neatly piled in the seat. On top of them lay the wrappers of all the junk food he had been sneaking for the last several weeks.
