Chapter Seventeen

Tara heard D’s voice announcing the capture and relayed the message to Sue, who cheered.

But something hadn’t felt right to Tara. The equipment hadn’t been working properly for one; and why would the bomber lead them on this chase only to give up so easily. In her ear she heard Myles voice telling her they were coming out.

Dread filled Tara, and without another moments thought, she grabbed Sue, dragging her out of the van, trying to put as much between them, the building and the van as possible. She heard the explosion, felt it underneath her feet, as she knocked Sue to the ground covering her body with her own. Realizing that she hadn’t let the rest of the team know they were abandoning the van.

Bobby felt the hands try to pull him off but he wasn’t letting go.

So blinded by his fury, he missed someone call out.

Myles hadn’t, while still trying to get in-between Bobby and the man who had just murdered their team mates, their friends; a voice broke through the mist of his shocked mind.

“Over here!”

Myles glanced over spotting the S.W.A.T member waving his arms before rushing around to the other side of the burning van.

“Their over here,” Those words sounded like heaven to him.

“Bobby, their alive,” Myles stated, those words took a moment to sink in before Bobby’s grip loosened. He took a step back then finally letting go.

Myles stepped in-between them, Bobby hadn’t even noticed he was too busy turning and running; Jack less then a step behind.

Myles waited a moment making sure the two men held their suspect securely before racing off after them.

Bobby rounded the van his eyes searching for them

He seemed to get an extra burst of speed the moment his eyes found them.

Chapter Eighteen

Tara had been about to roll off Sue seconds before the second explosion; holding her down securely, she wouldn’t let her budge.

Time seemed to stand still; Tara remembered moving off of Sue, slowly rolling so she moved to sit up. Sue slowly sat up glancing at Tara.

“Are you alright?” Tara asked Sue as she glanced over her.

Sue was holding her wrist to her body tightly, Tara heard the pounding on the ground and glanced up to see one of their own rushing towards them.

It all happened so fast, their team was there fussing over them, all of them calling out orders. Tara just sat there staring at the remained of what she had called her mobile office.

Tara felt strong arms take hold of her shoulders, as she blinked a familiar face appeared in front of her.

“Tara Luv, do you hurt anywhere?” Bobby asked.

“Sue’s wrist I think is sprained,” Tara said worried about Sue, a part of her feeling guilty for hurting her but on the other hand if she hadn’t reacted the way she had.

“Don’t worry, Jack’s got her.” Bobby said searching her face.

Tara nodded, “I need to stand.” She whispered.

Bobby nodded helping her to her feet. She stumbled and he wrapped his arm around her waist holding her to him.

The next three hours past quickly; giving her statement, being checked out by a doctor, before Tara finally headed home; she was tired, just wanting to have a hot shower and climb into bed.

Bobby sat in the diner staring into his half empty coffee cup; the events of the day replaying in his mind He nearly lost her today; the team nearly lost both of them.

“How are they?” Bobby asked not bothering to look up as Jack took the seat across from him.

“Sue’s got a sprained wrist, a few bumps and bruises, Tara just some bruises; the doctor wants them to take the rest of the week off.” Jack said nodding to the waitress as she filled a coffee cup for him. “Thinking about that risk?”

Bobby nodded, glancing up from his cup.

“You haven’t talked to her yet, have you?”

Bobby shook his head, “was going to Monday then this case happened.”

“What are you going to do?”

“That I don’t know, I just don’t know.”

Bobby didn’t know how he got through the next day, but he had managed to; barely. He kept glancing over at Tara’s desk so much was wrong between them and he wanted to put it all right.

He hadn’t realised where he was driving until he pulled up outside the house, yet he knew what he needed to do.

Knocking on the door he waited for someone to answer, hoping she would.

There was a pause then the door opened.

“We need to talk, I need your help.”

Chapter Nineteen

Tara spend the next day ignoring the phone, as she tried to do her annual spring cleaning; only this year she was two weeks behind.

Borrowing the boys from next door she got them to help her load up her car with her unwanted items; this year’s haul for the local church garage sale was her biggest yet. She was getting rid of so many items she had been holding onto for so long. Items that she had convinced herself she needed but in actuality she didn’t.

Tara felt like the season itself, spring was a time for births, rebirths, in a way fresh starts. She hadn’t realised it until that day, but that what she was like; spring. Tara was growing; blooming and it all started with the game. This spring, Tara became a new person. Carl had been right. She never thought before she would have even been standing on that field, let alone catching a ball; or even playing in the game. The game was her spring; her growth.

As Tara drove back home, after taking the unwanted items to the church, then stopping for ice cream as a treat for herself and the boys, Tara made a promise to herself to keep at the game, it was worth it.

“Hey there’s mom,” Eric stated as they pulled into Tara’s drive.

Liz was standing on her front step a smile on her face.

“Hey Mom, Tara paid us five dollars each and bought us ice cream just for helping her load and unload her car.” Timmy stated

“That’s great boys, why don’t you go in and tell your father,” Liz stated, already knowing about the trip and the ice cream. Tara had been sure to check with her first

“I hope they didn’t drive you too batty?” Liz smiled as the boys raced for the house.

“Not at all, I love having them around.” Tara replied unlocking her front door.

“What are you doing for dinner tomorrow?” Liz asked

“Nothing, why,” Tara asked glancing at her friend.

“Ah well, see there is this guy . . .”

“No more blind dates.” Tara stated shaking her head.

“But Tara, giving him a chance, he’s a great guy and the dinner will be at our place, so there isn’t anything to worry about.” Liz explained

“Awe Liz, you promised no more blind dates.”

“Please Tara, give him a chance, I have a really good feeling about this. I think he is the one for you.” Liz begged.

Tara sighed then reluctantly agreed.

Liz squealed with delight, pulling Tara into a tight hug.

“No more, I mean it Liz, this is the last one.”

“You don’t have to worry about that, dinner’s at 6; wear that gorgeous spring dress you wore at Easter last year.” Liz called as she started back to her side of the duplex. “And your right his is the last one. This man is the one for you.” She whispered to herself as she headed through her front door.

Heading to the phone she picked it up and dialled.

“She agreed, Dinner at 6,” She said when he answered. Liz pulled the phone away from her ear as he let out a loud cheer.

Chapter Twenty

Tara walked slowly from her place to Liz’s slowly, wanting so badly to trip and hurt her ankle or something. But lucky wasn’t on her side today.

“Hey Missy, stop dragging your feet and get in here,” She heard Liz stated, glancing up to find her friend standing on the steps her hands on her hips. “And stop trying to think of ways to get out of this.” Liz knew her to well.

“Where are the boys?” Tara asked hoping to use them as a saving grace.

“They’re spending the night with Carl, so forget that idea.” Liz informed her looking over her; “Perfect . . . just perfect . . . except for the shoes . . . runners Tara; with that dress?”

“It’s just dinner Liz, at your table; we don’t wear shoes in your house.” Tara reasoned with her.

Liz frowned slightly, and then smiled. “Come on he’s already waiting.”

Tara reluctantly followed her in, already planning the little escapes she could use to avoid the man as much as possible; as she slipped off her shoes.

All thoughts of escape vanished as she followed Liz into the living room; “Tara, I believe you know Bobby . . . your date.”

Tara stood there unable to speak, nor could she tear her eyes away from his.

“Bobby,” she said the confusion in her voice obvious.

He smiled at her, the dimples she loved so passionately drew her attention making her weak in the knees.

“Ah, excuse us for a minute,” Tara said catching Liz’s arm and leading her to the kitchen; leaving Bobby sitting with Adam in the living room.

“What is going on?” Tara asked in the privacy of the kitchen.

“Tara if this is how you are on a blind date, no wonder they don’t work out.” Liz teased. “Just relax and go with it.”

“But its Bobby; my co-worker, Bobby; the man who only sees me as a sister Bobby . . . the Bobby I embarrassed in front of his mates; the Bobby I . . .”

“Been in love with four the past two years?” Liz offered up.

Tara paused looking at her, almost pleading to who ever would listen to have the ground open up under her feet and swallow her whole. “But the department . . .”

“Tara, forget about everything for just one night.” Liz suggested.

Tara stared at her for a moment before nodding.

“Allow yourself to dream, I know you have imagined what a date with that man would be like.” Liz said softly.

“But is one night of dreaming worth having my heart broke for a life time?” Tara asked back just as softly.

Liz just rubbed her shoulders gently before leading her back to the living room.

Dinner was great, the four of them talked and laughed. Once coffee and desert was finished.

Reaching for her hand, Bobby helped Tara to her feet, excusing them.

“Where are we going?” She asked confused after held her hand as he leaded her to his car.

“You’ll see,” he replied winking at her before pulling out.

Tara being Tara questioned him all the way, until they pulled into a parking lot.

“The batting cages,” She asked confused. “But it’s closed.”

“It is,” Bobby smiled pulling out a key and unlocking the door, heading to the keypad to shut off the alarm, before going back and locking the door behind them.

“I’m not really dressed for batting practice Bobby.” She said looking down at herself.

“I think you’re dressed just beautifully,” he whispered.

Taking her hand, he grabbed two helmets and a bat, and led her down the path until the batting cage they had practiced in together that one night not so long ago.

“I’ll be right back,” he left her for a moment coming back after turning on lights and the machine.
Mirjam
I think Liz was right...this was the last blind date! For both of them, this has been the last first date. I wonder what Bobby's up to?.......
treenie
Chapter Twenty-One

Approaching her with the helmet he gently slipped it onto her head, before handing her the bat and putting on his own helmet.

Gently turning her towards the machine, he slipped his arms around her as he did that night, yet holding her closer then before.

Tara could smell the scent of his cologne, the feel of his chest against her back. She fought the urge to question his actions, and just let her self dream. One night, it would be worth it, to know what it was like to be the woman he focused his attention on. One night was worth the broken heart.

“Keep your eye on the ball; just imagine the ball and the bat meeting.” He whispered softly in her ear. She was sure she felt his lips gently kiss her neck, but she chalked it up to her imagination.

Tara swung, missing the ball; trying three more times before she stepped away from him.

“What are we doing here Bobby?” Tara asked frustrated again.

“I thought we could talk,” He shrugged watching as she took of her helmet.

“What’s there to talk about?” She asked confused.

“The game, you, me and us,” He stated watching as she wrapped her arms around herself.

“There isn’t anything to talk about,” Tara shrugged moving to the bench and setting down on it, not bothering to look up at him.

“I have a confession to make, Jack and I did hear you talking to Carl that day, as the boys told you.”

“It’s alright Bobby, there is no need for you to feel guilty, and I understand the risk you were going to take asking me to play. You did put yourself on the line for the team.” She shrugged off not really wanting to hear what he had to say.

“Tara that was on a Friday evening; I asked you to play Monday morning right . . .” he asked her, removing his own helmet, before crouching down in front of her.

Tara nodded, opening her mouth to speak but he pressed a finger to her lips stopping her.

“Donna didn’t hurt herself until Sunday afternoon. I didn’t know on Friday that I was going to ask you to join the team.”

Tara looked at him confused.

“What the boys over heard was parts of the conversation. I felt guilty because I hadn’t considered you when looking for a woman to play. I just ruled you out thinking you wouldn’t be interested anyways. I hadn’t realised until then how often I . . . the team excluded you in things with out even bothering to as you.” He paused nervously licking his lips, an action Tara didn’t fail to notice before he continued. “My comment about taking one for the team, I wasn’t referring that to me, I was thinking about you. If I had asked you to play, you would be taking one for the team. Doing something you didn’t enjoy for the sake of helping us out.”

“I wasn’t helping you out, as much as I was embarrassing you in front of your mates. I made a fool out of myself.” She shook her head, staring down at her clasped hands in her lap.

Bobby gently lifted her chin. “That’s where you’re wrong. Tara I never seen anyone so dedicated, so . . . willing to learn something as you were. You wanted to learn the game even before I asked you to play. You came to every practice, putting up with the comments that never should have been made in the first place. Many people in your position would of just gave up; they would of made an excuse; not you. You kept trying, not giving up when others would of. I admire that in you. You’re a beautiful woman Tara Williams, inside and out. And if anyone one embarrassed me it was our team mates. Their conduct was uncalled for. They could take a lesson from Eric and Timmy on Sportsmanship. I just wish you had told me. ”

She shrugged, “That’s all over with, and if it’s ok with you I rather just forget about it.”

He nodded, then paused watching her “I . . . I have something for you,” he said suddenly nervous.

“You do?” She asked surprised.

“I do,” He stepped away from her reaching into the pocket of his brown leather jacket he had taken off early just so he could hold her closer to him.

Setting it back down he returned to her sitting next to her on the bench he handed her the baseball.

She took in her hands, holding onto it, turning it in her hands before looking up at him.

“It’s the game ball; I wanted you to have it. Not only was it your first hit, but that hit won the game for us.” He put up his hand, knowing what she was about to say. “It was a team effort yes, but you put the most effort into the game. You started from scratch learning the game, even though the ones who were suppose to be supportive of you weren’t. You didn’t dwell on your weaknesses, just work each night to try and eliminate them. I know how you would come here every night and promise. And even though you couldn’t seem to hit the ball, it never stopped you from trying. You didn’t quit.”

Tara glanced down at the ball again, seeing what he saw in it; what it represented. Clutching it in her hand, she threw her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly.

“Thank you,” She whispered softly.

“No Luv, thank you. You’re an inspiration to me and others.” He replied back holding her tightly to him, not sure if he would ever get the chance again. Especially if he found the courage to tell her what else he wanted to tell her; if he took “the risk”.

Tara pulled back and smiled at him, “It feels strange to be here with out anyone else here.” She commented glancing around.

Bobby nodded in agreement. He had gone to Liz for help and he had to admit she helped him. He was shocked when Carl called him asking him to stop by the sports shop, but he was glad he did. He learned that Carl also owned the cages and slipped him the key. Telling Bobby he knew what to do with it. Puzzled at first, it hit him; he did know what to do with it.

“Ah Bobby, why exactly are we here?” Tara asked her voice breaking him out of his thoughts. “I mean you could have told me that any where.”

“We’re here . . . we’re here because the only time you kissed me was after you hit the ball. I brought you here, so we could improve on your batting, so you could kiss me more often.” He replied honestly, glancing down at his hands not wanting to see the reject in her eyes

Tara was shocked at first, and then quickly recovered as she spotted the fear in his eyes as he looked away. She gently reached up her fingers tracing his jaw line, as she brought it up so they were eye to eye. “Bobby if you wanted a kiss all you had to do was ask.” She said her voice thick with emotion.

Treenie,

I love this story. A little shocking when it went from the trials of baseball to an exploding survelliance van, but like you said what are your stories without angst.

Bobby's revelation to Tara was just amazing. Amazingm writing. Can't wait to read what's coming next.

Chapter Twenty-Two

He watched her, glancing at her lips then back up to her eyes.

He didn’t need to ask, Tara leaned in gently pressing her lips to his, kissing him softly.

She pulled back and nervously glanced up at him; even though he had made that confession the fear that he would realise he made a mistake strongly presented itself in her mind. The words she had over heard in the washroom that afternoon, played over and over.

“Tara,” he softly whispered, glancing at her lips again, then back up to her eyes. One taste wasn’t enough. He leaned forward wrapping his arms around her, taking her mouth with his and kissing her like they had that day back on the field.

Finally coming up for air, Tara found herself sitting on his lap her arms wrapped around his neck; his held her close to him, as if he never wanted to let her go.

“Tara, I have another confession to make,” that kiss had giving him the confidence he needed.

Tara stilled and she tried to calm the panic she felt inside, at his words.
“The boys heard me say something about taking a risk. That had nothing to do with the game.” He explained, pausing to take a deep breathe.

“What . . . what did it have to do with?” she nervously asked.

“You, for so long, I wanted to tell you, yet I was scared of having you not share the same thing I was feeling, and in the end I would lose you. I didn’t want to risk taking a chance if there was a chance that if I did, and you didn’t feel the same, I would lose our friendship. I didn’t want to lose what we did have in case I wasn’t able to have what I wanted.”

Tara watched him searching his face. “What do you want?” She asked nervously.

“You Luv, I want you to feel the same way about me as I do about you.”

Tara took a deep breathe, she had to know. “How do you feel about me?”

“I love you, with all my heart, and all that is inside me. I love you.”

Tears came to Tara’s eyes. “I love you too Bobby, I have for so long. I just never thought you would ever feel the same way. I’m not really your type.”

Bobby looked at her puzzled.

“Darcy was tall, beautiful, and graceful; before her Annie was tall, dark brown hair, sophisticated, even Sarah is tall, red headed, athletic. Then there is me . . . short, short blond hair, clumsy, and well on the geeky side. I am none of the things they are.”

“And yet I still love you.” He replied. “Luv, they may have had their beauty on the outside, but on the inside I found them lacking. You have everything, you’re beautiful, caring, and funny, and you have a heart of gold. I love that you’re clumsy, that you’re down to earth . . . in a good way, and I have no problem with the fact that you aren’t athletic. You have many other talents and skills that people envy. Remember when the whole office became computerized?”

Tara nodded.

“Remember who blew the breaker for the whole floor, including the conference room the big directors had been in?” He asked, “Me. And do you remember who fixed the problem? You did. I love you for you, the way you are, who you are, I will never ask you to change that person for me.”

Tara felt the tears slowly start down her face; people spent their whole life searching for “the one”, Bobby was her “one”, and hopefully she was his.

Epilogue

Tara sat on the bleachers letting the light spring breeze gently warm her as she reflected back over the last five years. So much of her life had changed, all for the better. Bobby and hers relationship had its ups and downs and was still going strong. After a year and a half of dating on a trip home to meet his family he proposed to her. Six months later, on a beautiful spring day, they were married.

Although they could no longer work together, Tara was able to get a transfer to the team that shared the bullpen with them. The directors not wanting to lose what they called an asset to a top team; she was at the disposal of both teams when ever she was needed. Bobby moved into her duplex with her, even though she offered to sell it and they could look for a home together; she didn’t think it was fair that he gave up his place without her having to too. He just smiled at her and reminded her how much he loved that golden heart of hers.

So much had happened over the past five years. Sue left for six months, having been recruited but a team in Alaska who needed her lip reading ability. Those six months were the hardest of all of their lives; Jack made it almost unbearable. Sue had only been back for a day when she disappeared for a weekend. It turns out that Jack Hudson finally seen the light; having proposed to her, they rushed off to Vegas, to the disappointment of both their parents. But it didn’t take long for their families to get over it. Happy their children were married.

Myles and Lucy, still bickered back and forth; but for them that’s what made their friendship strong. Both were in serious relationships and time would only tell how long it would be before, they joined the rest of their married colleagues.

D finally received that promotion, and his first act as the team’s new supervisor was to finding a way for Sue to remain on the team. Because she wasn’t an agent, but only analyst he was able to achieve his goal.

A week after Tara and Bobby started dating Liz to Adam’s joy announced she was pregnant. Six months later she announced to Adam’s surprised that it was another set of twins. Two months later she gave birth to two beautiful baby girls.

With the help of Bobby, the boys, Carl and Adam after his leg healed Tara’s ball skills greatly improved and she became a powerful player; because she grew to love the game so much, Tara joined the same woman’s community team Donna played on. And every year when the annual D.E.A verses the F.B.I game came up; she played on the team; every year but this one.

“How you doing,” Liz asked watching as Tara rubbed the small of her back again.

“I’m doing fine, Bobby’s up.” Tara said nodding towards the field.

It was a close game, as it was every year, their team up to bat; on their final out. The score was tied; they just needed one run to win. Bobby hadn’t been playing his best this game, striking out or walking every time he was up at bat.

“Strike One!” Tara heard the Ump state.

“Come on Baby, you can do it.” She cheered which started the rest of the team who was sitting around her. Tara felt tightness and then a lot of pressure.

“Strike two!”

Tara groaned slightly, no longer the same amount of pressure but wetness.

“Oh no,” she groaned “Not yet, not until the game is over!”

“Tara your water just broke,” Liz stated getting to her feet. “How long have you been having contractions?”

“Since the first inning,” Tara whispered groaning in pain.

There was a loud crack as the ball connected with the bat, Tara with the help of Liz got to her feet. Bobby had hit the ball, knocking it clean out of the park.

“What’s going on?” Jack asked seeing the movement.

“It looks like Tara’s in labour,” Adam replied.

“Run those bases fast Koala Boy, your about to become a father!” Myles yelled as Bobby rounded second base.

Myles words caught him off guard and he stumbled slightly as he turned his head to look in Tara’s direction.

Adam and Liz were walking her to the car, and were just helping her into the back seat as Bobby hit home plate. His team cheered, as he had just won the game for them, but Bobby didn’t stop. He just kept on running racing for the car.

Liz and Adam having already driven off, seeing that Tara’s contractions were so close together, Bobby climbed in with Jack and Sue, following not very far behind them.

Three hours later Zoe Rae Manning was born on the warm spring evening.

Tara lay in the bed, watching Bobby hold their little girl. She couldn’t have been a born at a better time of the year. Spring, the season of new beginnings, and Tara’s life was proof of that; with the birth of their daughter, they would again start anew.

Wow Treenie that was fantastic. What an adventure I had reading it -- I kept logging on at wonky computers at work and everytime I reached the third page I got zonked out! It's taken me all day to get this read and I loved it! I know absolutely nothing about baseball (except that the only ball I hit with a bat hit my sister between the eyes and knocked her out cold!) but you drew me in and made me so interested I almost feel like giving it a try (almost!) I love your Tara -- a great mix of fiesty and vulnerable and Bobby wub.gif

LOL hun if you can tell i know nothing about it either, just the little bits that i put in, running bases, hitting and catching and the usual teasing when they think someone will bunt the ball. OTher then that nothing. I don't even know the rules all that well. whistling.gif)

I am glad everyone liked it. It was a pleasure to write that one. I wanted to do something different and i was walking past my living room and i caught on the tv a man showing his wife how to golf. SHe hit the ball and it went pretty far, SO happy with herself she gave him a passinate kiss. That scene is what i wrote that story around. It inspired me./ Although not sure how golf inspired me for baseball, lol

Wow! I just finished reading the whole thing, and I enjoyed it very much! biggrin.gif It was interesting and engaging and very cute! I liked the way you tied the epilogue into the rest of the story, with the baseball game and the spring stuff. smile.gif Very nice!

glad it turned out more than ok...not only did she learn how to play base ball, her first hit was the winning hit and she kissed bobby then she and him finally dated and married
of course her kid can't wait until daddy finishes the game
lol myles yelling to bobby to hurry up and run the bases so he could meet his kid.
