Chapter One

Tara laid down the baseball bat frustrated, every night until close she had practiced, and yet she still couldn’t hit the ball, and tomorrow was the game

“We’re closing” she heard the voice behind her state.

She sighed and turned leaving the batting cage.

* * * *

Two weeks ago

Bobby hung up the phone frustrated . . . It seemed his baseball team needed an extra player for the big game. Jack offered his services and so did Myles and D, but he just shook his head.

“I appreciate the offer Mates but there is sort of a condition.” Everyone watched him. “For every guy there is supposed to be a woman on the team. I’m down a woman. . .”

Myles chuckled.

“What about Darcy . . .” Tara heard Sue ask.

“We split months ago,” He replied. “Besides baseball wasn’t her thing.”

“Sports wasn’t her thing . . .” Tara heard Jack mumble as he refilled his coffee cup.

Bobby glanced at both Sue and Lucy . . .

“Sorry Bobby, no can do I am going to stay with Gram that weekend,” Lucy stated

“Sorry Bobby, I can’t either . . .” Tara heard Sue say as she returned to her work.

She knew he wouldn’t ask her.

“It’s alright I’ll find someone, I just don’t want to have to forfeit, those D.E.A guys would just love that.”

“Probably their only chance of winning,” Myles joked

A phone rang and they all went back to work.

Chapter Two

It was the next morning Bobby slumped down in his chair, turning down the box of donuts that was offered to him.

“Are you sick Bobby?” Sue asked concerned.

“No, I’m alright; I just can’t find anyone to play.”

“I think your missing someone right in front of you.” Jack offered up glancing at Tara before he added sugar to his coffee.

“Donna what are you doing here?” Lucy asked as D’s attractive wife was escorted into the Bullpen.

“D left in a hurry this morning he forgot his briefcase.” She said holding it up.

“Donna, what are you doing a week from this Sunday?” Bobby asked remembering how D had mentioned Donna use to play on a woman team.

“Nothing . . .” She glanced at D.

“How would you like to play a game of baseball with my team and I; we need one more female.” Bobby asked.

Donna glanced at D again who just smiled

“Sure Bobby.”

“Whoo Hoo,” He cheered picking her up and spinning her around in his excitement.

Tara frowned, she knew he would have never asked her anyways, she couldn’t play, she didn’t know how. She had given up on sports when she was always the last one picked, focusing on her studies instead; at least they wouldn’t hurt her feelings. That still didn’t stop the hurt.

She felt Jack give her shoulder a slightly squeeze and she glanced up at him. He gave her one of his smiles and she used all her effort to return it.

That night Tara stared out her kitchen window as she dried her dishes; it wasn’t Bobby’s fault that she was no good at sports, she couldn’t be mad at him.

Sighing she watched her next door neighbor’s twin boys; Timmy and Eric toss a baseball around in their back yard.
Finishing up the dishes she put away the cloth and headed to her empty living room, sitting quietly on the couch; her fat tomcat Smurf jumped up besides her making himself comfortable in her lap.

Tara gently stroked his soft fur, trying to keep the tears at bay. She knew she wasn’t any good at sports but it hurt how her lack of skill in that department seemed to keep a slight distance between her and her co-workers; Jack with his hockey, Bobby and well all the sports he played, even Myles and D. She heard them over the years ask everyone but her if they wanted to play.

The only time the invitation was offered to her was the first year she had joined the team and the annual D.E.A VS F.B.I football came up. After the first two practices and nearly breaking Myles ankle she gave up her position on the team. Since then they never asked again.

“Besides Tara it’s not like learning the sport would get him to look at you differently,” She said glancing down at Smurf.

The cat looked up at her curiously and purred louder to show his appreciation for the attention she was giving him. “You’re going to have to get over this silly crush you have on him. But that smile, those eyes . . . his heart, and his bu . . .” She started but a knocking at the door interrupted her thoughts.

Smurfs nails gripped into her legs as he too was startled. Tara swallowed down a curse before removing him from her lap and getting to her feet.

The door bell rang again as she made her way to it. Peeking through the peep hole she spotted an obviously upset Liz, the mother of the twin boys next door.

Tara flew the door open, “What’s the matter Liz are you alright?” She asked worried about her good friend and neighbor.

“Tara I need your help . . .”

Chapter Three

Four hours later Tara turned off her neighbor’s TV and got up to get ready for bed. She took a quick shower before changing into a pair of shorts and t-shirt, then checking on the two boys, before she climbed into the unfamiliar bed.

Liz’s husband Adam was away on business and had been in a car accident. Liz had been called to his side . . . she didn’t really know much of his condition but she knew she had to be there with him. She asked Tara if she would watch the boys; a request to which Tara readily agreed to, and helped Liz to pack before she drove her to the airport.

Tara had watched the boys many times; they were great kids, she enjoyed their company and their ability to make her laugh. Although this was going to be a little longer than the usual night or overnight times, she didn’t have a problem doing this for her friends. Liz had given her a list of things she felt Tara needed to know; when to drop them off at school, and when to pick them up. She had arranged for the family friend, Carl; to pick them up and bring them to his store where they would stay until Tara could pick them up after work.

After reassuring Liz they would be fine, Tara convinced her to get on the plane. Liz promised to call when she knew anything.

The next morning Tara dropped the boys off at school before heading into work. She smiled slightly as she heard Bobby raving about Donna’s ability as D beamed proudly.

Tara worked quietly at her desk putting up the front that she was happy. By quitting time she was happy to be leaving; she picked up the boys asking how their day was.

“It was great . . .” Eric stated

“Tar do you think we could toss a ball around in the back yard,” Timmy asked.

Tara smiled at them, “Sure, how do hot dogs sound for supper?”

“Yummy . . .” they cheered.

She watched them toss the ball back and forth while making supper; they both were good, encouraging one another, showing each other techniques to improve their skills. Tara admired her friend’s parenting skills.

Tara had been cleaning up for dinner when the phone rang.

“Hey Liz how’s Adam?” She asked.

“He has to have surgery; I may be here for until sometime next week. I can call my mother . . .”

“It’s alright Liz the boys and I will be fine. You and Adam do enough for me.” Tara said thinking how Adam would fix things around her duplex for her, or Liz would bring over a casserole that Tara could freeze and reheat later.

“Tara, at least let us pay you . . .”

“How about we make a deal, you don’t set me up on any more blind dates and we’ll call it even.” Tara suggested

Liz chuckled before agreeing.

Tara called the boys in to talk to their mother for a few minutes before the three of them went back outside, the boys continued to toss the ball around as Tara watched.

“Tar did mom tell you we have a game on Friday?” Timmy asked

“A game,” Tara tried to think back; no, Liz hadn’t mentioned it.

“It’s in the afternoon, do you think maybe you could come . . . all the other kids parents are suppose to be there. Mom never missed a game.” Eric finished asking.

Tara looked at the two boys. “I’ll do my best to be there,” she said already planning on talking to Garret in the morning.

Garret readily agreed, telling Tara that she worked too hard anyways. She would work until 2:30 Friday afternoon; Carl agreed to drop them off at the Hoover building so Tara could drive them home to get ready.

For the next two days Tara and the boys got established in their routine.

Thursday night near the end of the day, she glanced up when Lucy approached her desk.

“What are you doing this evening Tara?” She asked. “Would you like to have dinner with Sue and I, then get in some shopping?”

“I wish I could Lucy but I have plans, sorry.” Tara said shutting down her computer.

“Oh? Blind date tonight?” D asked as he pushed away from his computer.

Tara smiled, “not a blind one, just dinner with Eric and Timmy.”

“You’re having dinner with two guys at the same time?” Myles asked confused.

She felt all eyes on her and shrugged. “Sure been doing it all week.” Tara replied remembering they didn’t know who Timmy and Eric were.

She caught Jack’s smirk as he glanced at Bobby. Tara followed his glance and caught the look on Bobby’s face. She was confused by it but shrugged it off to pick up the boys.

Chapter Four

By 2:20 the next afternoon Tara started to shut down for the day, wanting to be ready to go when the boys got there.

“Done for the day?” She heard Bobby ask as he refilled his coffee cup.

“Yup, have plans.” She replied locking up her desk, missing the frown that crossed Bobby’s face.

“Tara you have guests.” I heard Lucy stated.

Tara looked up to see Timmy and Eric glancing around eyes widen with amazement.

“Tar this place is so cool,” Eric stated; Timmy nodded his agreement.

“And the F.B.I has a dog?” Timmy asked as Levi made his way over to them to receive some attention.

“Actually that’s Sue’s hearing dog, Levi.” Tara explained. “Sue is deaf; she uses Levi to help her out with some aspect of her life. If you look at her when you speak, she can read your lips.”

“Really that’s cool!” Timmy stated then glanced at Sue and signed what he had just said to her.

Tara’s mouth dropped slightly, she hadn’t known they could sign.

“Nice to meet you,” Sue said. “Where did you learn to sign?” She asked out loud and signed at the same time.

“Our Gram was deaf, so both Mom and dad know how to sign, and taught us.” Eric explained.

“Boys these are my friend and co-workers Lucy, Jack, Myles, D and Bobby.” Tara caught their eyes light up when I mentioned Bobby’s name, it was then Tara was sure they had over heard their mom and her talking a time or two about him.

“Guys, this is Timmy and Eric,”

“Your dinner dates?” Bobby asked glancing up at her confused.

“Tara is watching us until our mom returns, she had to go; dad was in an accident.” Timmy explained

“But he is supposed to be doing better; they should be back sometime next week. Tara wouldn’t take any payment except asking mom not to set her up on any more blind dates.”

Tara caught Bobby’s eyes raise as she felt her face turn red. “Alright Boys, we have to get home so you can change,” she stated ushering them out the door.

Tara sat on the bleachers watching the two boys play their heart out, both teams did. She admired Eric and Timmy; they were competitive but yet had great sportsmanship. All the kids tried their best, and no one complained or teased them. The coaches gave them all equal playing time in different positions.

It was then Tara made up her mind; she was going to learn the game

“You guys were great!” She exclaimed as she walked with them back to her car.

“Thanks Tar and thank you for coming to our game.” The twin boys said at the same time.

“It was my pleasure, although I do have one favor to ask . . . Teach me how to play.”

Tara caught their eyes light up and their smiles widen.

“Firstly . . .”

An hour later she found herself sitting in Carl’s sports store as he prepared a glove for her. The boys with the help of Carl had picked out the perfect glove. Carl was preparing the glove for her, tying a string around it so it would be shaped and not so stiff for her to use.

The boys were off looking at new shipment bikes at that had come in.

“What made you decide to learn?” Carl asked as he worked the leather glove. He was an older man, who Tara took an instant liking to the night she met him at Liz and Adams all those years ago.

“I never learned how to play . . . I kind of dropped sports when I was young, hated being the last one picked for the team. There is only so much a girl’s ego can take. Then recently one of my co-workers needed a female to play on his team for a game next weekend. I wasn’t even asked . . . which I guess was ok since they all know I can’t play anyways. I guess it just hurt that I wasn’t even considered. When I am with my co-workers I always feel like there is this little something between us. They all are decent at sports, have at least played. The last and only time I ever played with them, I nearly broke one of my co-workers ankles.” Tara explained

Carl watched her. “I’ll tell you what, after I close up for the night tomorrow and Sunday I’ll come over and help the boys teach you.” He offered

“Would you? That’s great Carl.” Tara said excitedly.

“While I’m at it here,” He set down her glove and reached up and grabbed a small book off the shelf handing it to her. “This should help you.” It was a book on the rules of the game. Tara smiled and thanked him.

Ten minutes later she was taking the boys to a fast food restaurant then home to start her first lesson.

Bobby and Jack stood behind one of the racks in the sports shop, having stopped in to pick up a few needed items. Never in a million years would they have ever thought they would find Tara here . . . They were about to go over and say hello when they couldn’t help but over hear hers’ and Carl’s conversation.

Pain filled Bobby as he heard her words. He hadn’t even considered her, it wasn’t that he wanted to win . . . ok part of him did . . . It was the D.E.A after all. He just didn’t think she would be interested. He cursed himself, and glanced at Jack, the same look of guilt on his face.

They waited until Tara left with the boys before the two of them approached the counter.

“Bobby, Jack, what can I get you boys?” Carl asked as he prepared to serve them

Tara, I totally understand. I guess that's why I'm liking this story so much this far Treenie - I'm like Tara in that I was always the last one picked so I've kinda quit even trying to play and focused on my studies. But I'm a huge sports fanatic so I've found my niche in keeping track of the sports statistics and watching as many baseball games on TV as I can. Anyways, I can totally relate to Tara here. I look forward to the rest of your story. 5 posts a day would be great!

Chapter Five

By the end of the weekend Tara had learned how to catch, throw and how to replace windows.

The first window she broke was old Miss Jepson’s, the cranky woman from across the lane.

The woman had come out and started to scream at the boys when Tara stepped in and stated that it hadn’t been them at all; it was her who broke the window. The older woman stared at her stunned for a moment then proceeded to discipline Tara on the etiquette of being a lady.

Tara listened to her speech before promising to replace the window. The first one took two hours.

By the end of the weekend, Tara had also replaced her own bathroom window, kitchen one and the office window in the boy’s portion of the house.

Monday night Carl took her to the batting cages and three of them tried to teach Tara how to hit a ball. As easy as it was for her to pick up throwing and catching, that seemed to be where her natural talent ended. She spent three hours there and didn’t hit one thing.

She frowned, feeling down with herself.

“It’s alright, hitting takes practice.” Carl had said they all loaded into his car.

“I guess,” Tara replied.

To cheer her up the boys and Carl took her for ice cream.

Tara went to bed that night feeling good about what she had learned, but still disappointed in herself for what she couldn’t get.

Tuesday after dropping off the boys at school she came into the Bullpen to a depressing atmosphere.

“What’s going on?” She asked seeing the sad looks on Bobby’s face along with D’s.

“Donna had an accident . . .” Lucy started.

“Is she alright?” Tara asked worried glancing to D.

“She’s ok, just sprained her ankle while both she and Tanya were out rollerblading.”

“Donna rollerblades,” Myles asked his eyes widened.

“She told the kids anything they wanted to do like that; she would do it with them. It was her way of knowing how safe each activity was. She was having a great time until she forgot the stopper was on the back instead of the front like with roller skates.” D explained

“Send her my Luv,” Tara said.

D nodded and smiled.

“That means your down a woman again Bobby,” Sue stated.

“Not if he looks at what is in front of him.” Jack said.
Tara wasn’t paying attention, just going about starting her day.

“Tara . . .” Bobby said watching her.

Tara hadn’t heard him.

He got up and crossed the room, stopping in front of her desk. “Luv,”

Tara looked up at him, surprised to see him that close.

“What are you doing this weekend?” He asked nervously.

“Nothing,” Tara replied wondering if he needed her to work on something for him.

“Would you consider being on my team?”

Tara couldn’t have been more shocked . . . “I’m not very good,” she said

“That’s alright; we have a few practices planned for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.” He said watching her.

Tara hated feeling like she was a last choice, but he was asking and she didn’t want to turn him down.

“Sure,” She said smiling at him. “Just don’t expect much.”

He smiled at her then turned back his desk.

The rest of the day seemed to go by in a breeze. After making supper for her and the boys the three of them went back to the batting cages where again she tried to hit the ball.

And again she hit nothing.

“It’s ok Tar, you’ll get it, and you throw really well for a girl . . .” Timmy smiled at her.

Tara smiled back, trying her best to keep her disappointment in check.

Chapter Six

The phone was ringing when they got back to the house.

“Hey Tara,” Liz said when Tara answered breathlessly, “everything alright?”

“Everything is great, we just got in we were at the batting cages.” Tara explained.

“The batting cages,” Liz asked confused.

“What were they doing at the batting cages?” Tara heard Adam ask in the background.

“The boys are teaching me how to play baseball.” Tara explained.

“You’re kidding . . .” Liz replied surprised, Tara heard her tell Adam.

“Oh man we are going to go broke trying to make up for that . . . those boys love that game.” She heard Adam say.

“Actually I asked them to teach me,” Tara explained.

There was silence on the other end.

“I think someone has been slipping Adam’s medication into my coffee, I am sure you just said you asked them to teach you.” Liz repeated

“I did . . .” Tara went on to explain everything.

“Tara you’re an amazing woman,” Liz said.

Tara didn’t know what she meant by that but didn’t ask as the boys returned wanting to talk to their mom.

Tara let them talk as she went up and showered getting into a pair of shorts and tank top coming downstairs just as the boys hung up.

“Mom said they will be back on Thursday.” The boys cheered.

Tara smiled at the two boys as she prepared a light snack for them; they watched TV until it was bed time. She read to them before kissing them goodnight.

By the end of work the next day she had made arrangements with Bobby to meet him at the practice field, letting him know she would be bring the boys along with her.

The boys were excited to go, Tara wished she could share in their excitement but too nervous to really be excited.

Tara found the field without a problem, the only problem she had was getting out of the car. She could see his buddies, the woman who they asked to play all there too. She couldn’t compare to Donna; she was going to embarrasses him.
She felt two small hands on her shoulders.

“You’ll do great, besides its not how you look, it’s the effort you put into it.” Eric said.

Tara smiled at them. “How did you two get so smart?” she asked.

“Dad taught us that.” Timmy replied proudly.

“And mom taught us that is not whether you win or lose its how you played the game. IF you tried your best you’re good sportsmen, if you cheated or whined then you’re poor sportsmen and you shouldn’t be playing.

“Your parents are very smart people.” Tara stated.

“Yup,” the boys said climbing out of the car.

Tara took one last deep breathe and joined them.
JesusFreak718
Yup, their parents must be really smart and it's obviously rubbed off on their two precious boys. Now, get ready to play some ball Tara! biggrin.gif

Chapter Seven

Tara dragged herself in the door, trying to hide the pain she felt inside. She had seen the snickering the women were doing. But at least she tried her hardest, so what that she wasn’t as good as the others. What Eric and Timmy had said was right she tried that’s all that counts.

The three of them got ready for bed, watched a bit of TV before turning in for the night.

Tara’s dreams were haunted with her failure; Bobby being mad at her for embarrassing him; the woman’s laughter.

She woke with a start, as thunder of a spring storm banged loudly above her. She heard the scream and was about to climb out of bed when the boys raced into the room with her; practically diving into the bed with her.

“Tar can we sleep with you,” she heard their shaking voices ask.

Another loud bang sounded causing Tara to bury herself deep in the covers, happy the boys were with her.

“I think that’s a good idea,” She pulled them close holding them.

The storm raging loudly above her as the one inside her fought a battle she knew the good side would not win. She sighed trying to fall asleep like the boys had; Timmy was a very still sleeper, but Eric wasn’t.
Tara barely got any sleep, easing herself out of the bed early she got up to shower. Her bruises she was sure had bruises of their own. She made them breakfast before getting two very tired boys out of bed. Even still they were good kids; and their moods changed when Tara reminded them that their parents would be home sometime today.

Tara went to work that day tired, and depressed. And it didn’t help that it seemed that Bobby seemed to be avoiding her. She got on with her work, wishing that time would just stop and Sunday would never arrive

Tara showed up at practice again; trying even harder today then she had done the day before. Her body still hurt but she was giving it all she had for Bobby’s sake. She was able to catch a few balls, proud of herself for that . . . the boys were too, as they cheered loudly for her.

She even got a “great catch Luv,” from Bobby.

Things seemed to be going ok until they had her go up to bat. Tara tried . . . yet she still could not get that bat to connect with the ball.

“Good try Luv,” She heard Bobby say as he went up to bat next, knocking the ball out of the park. They practiced for another hour and a half before they called it quits for the night.

“Hey Luv, wait up a sec.” She heard Bobby call, but he was stopped by one of the team members’ sister who was also playing in the game. Tara watch her flirt with him, touching his arm, giggling. She was one of those who had been snickering at her; she was one of the ones who could do it all in the game.

Tara sighed glanced at Bobby one last time before leading the boys quietly away.

More focused on driving Tara missed the look exchange between the two boys.

She parked in her driveway and smiled when she seen the lights on in the other side of the duplex.

“Looks like your parents are home boys.” She said as they opened the door and rushed out across the yards to their house.

Tara smiled locking up the car slowly and painfully followed them.

“Mom . . . Dad!” She heard them cry out as she stepped in the doorway.

She watched as they hugged their mom first then carefully gave their dad a hug, trying to avoid his cast leg.
“Hey, looks painful? Does that mean you won’t be mowing this summer?” Tara teased knowing how much Adam hated to mow. “If this is what you do to avoid it, remind me to stay out of your way when the snow starts to fall.”

“Hey Sprite, thanks for watching my boys . . . I hope they weren’t too much trouble.”

“No trouble at all,” Tara said.

“We got to see the Hover building.” Eric stated.

“You mean the Hoover building?’ Liz asked

“That’s what I said the Hover building.” Eric reassured them.

“Tara taught us how to replace windows. Five of them . . . two at Mrs. Jepson’s house” Timmy stated.

“What did I tell you boys about being careful with your baseballs?” Adam asked them.

“We were . . .”

“You couldn’t have been if you had to replace windows.” Liz said softly.

“Tar broke them.”

Tara glanced down at the ground ashamed, feeling both their eyes on her.

“Tara?”

“I broke them . . . but it was my first day and I was just learning . . . I promise mum . . . dad I paid for them out of my own pocket.”

Adam just shook his head trying to hide his smile.

“If you guys don’t mind, there is somewhere I would like to go before it closes. Can I catch up with you tomorrow?” Tara asked.

Liz and Adam nodded.

The boys gave her hugs thanking her before she headed back out. Getting into her car she drove to the batting cages and practiced until they shut off the lights on her; still not hitting one ball.

She sighed heading home. Foregoing a shower she climbed into bed and snuggled up with Smurf before falling asleep.

My heart is breaking for Tara...she is trying so hard, yet Bobby still doesn't recognise it!!! I wanted to take the bat and smack this flirting girl upside the head with it! Laughing at Tara, what was she thinking!!!!

Chapter Eight

Tara woke the next morning really not wanting to get out of bed, but forcing herself to do so anyways.

Showering, she then fed Smurf before heading off to work.

“Hey Luv, you didn’t wait for me yesterday.” Bobby said catching up to her as she entered the elevator.

“Sorry Bobby Liz and Adam got home last night; I was taking the boys back home.” Tara half lied.

“They are great kids . . . great sportsmanship in both of them.” He said

She nodded in agreement; stepping off the elevator they started towards the Bullpen.

“So practice tonight at the same time?” she asked

He didn’t answer right away and Tara glanced up and seen the pain in his eyes.

“Excuse me Bobby; I forgot something in my car.” She excused herself and hurried back to the elevator stepping inside just in time as the door closed

Bobby stood there watching her retreat. He hated to see the light inside of her slowly becoming extinguished. It killed him inside to see her so withdrawn. She put up a front still laughing and joking with the rest of them but the smile ever fully reached her eyes.

When she asked about the practice he froze. She would come putting on a brave face trying; but the smile she wore, he could tell was forced. He hated seeing her like that. She was forcing herself to do something she didn’t like because of their friendship, she was doing it for him. In the process bring herself down; he hated it.

He entered the Bullpen missing the envelope on Tara’s desk.

After she collected herself, taking deep breaths to keep from crying Tara headed back up the Bullpen; putting away her stuff she spotted the envelope on her desk. Opening it she frowned, glancing up at the others. There was no way they would have put it there. It was a comic making fun of her lack of skill on the baseball field.

Tara hid the tears in her eyes as she packed up some of the stuff she needed and decided to work out of the office today; it was a great day to check in with all her informants.

After spending most of the day doing so, she stopped in to see Carl. Hoping he may have some advice for her. She talked with him, listening to his advice before getting up and leaving. Not realizing she had left the envelope with the comic on the counter.

Things got busy and Carl finally made it back to the counter, the mail was piled on the envelope. Opening it he frowned picked up the phone and dialed his friends.

Tara headed home having a light dinner, laid down for a short nap before getting up and heading out to practice.

She smiled when she pulled up, spotting Liz and the boys standing next to their car waiting for her.

“We came to cheer you on.” Liz smiled as Tara walked with them to the field.

Tara again tried her hardest, yet she felt like she wasn’t getting anywhere. She almost wished that she hadn’t bothered. She gathered her stuff giving the boys a hug, trying not to listen to the comments the woman were making about her. She glanced up at Liz who seemed to be lost in thought; a deep frown on her face.

Tara walked with them back to their car before getting into hers and driving one again to the batting cage. Again she stayed until closing only to go home with nothing. Her batting average was in the negatives . . . if that was even possible.

Showering she cuddled with Smurf on the couch falling asleep.

Liz climbed into bed with her husband the deep frown still on her face.

“What’s wrong sweetheart?” Adam asked shifting slightly as he patted his chest so she could rest her head against him.

“It’s Tara, is trying so hard to succeed, I have seen anyone put this much effort into it; she can catch, and has a decent throw. It doesn’t go too far but she’s tries so hard. Carl says she goes to the batting cage every night practicing until they close.” Liz explained. “He stopped by today and showed me this . . . it seems Tara left it.” She reached into the nightstand and pulled out the envelope with Tara’s name written on the front of it.

Adam opened it and frowned. “This is just cruel . . . to someone as sweet as Tara.” He shook his head.

“You didn’t see them at the practice. Those woman they didn’t try to hide their comments around Tara . . . they insulted her. Of course they quieted down when the guys came around. Tara acted like she didn’t notice but I know she did. I hate seeing her like this it’s killing the Tara we know and love.”

“I know sweetheart, but what can we do about it?” He asked gently rubbing his wife’s back. There was a slight knock at the door and he glanced up as his two boys peeked their heads in the room.

“Hey I thought you two were sleeping.” Liz said smiling at her beautiful red headed sons that looked so much like their father.

“We couldn’t sleep . . . we were worried about Tara.” Timmy said sadly.

Liz looked at her boys then to Adam before patting the bed. The boys scurried up the bed careful of their dad’s leg as they snuggled next to their parents.

“Why are you worried about Tara?” Adam asked as his son rested his head against his chest.

“We heard those ladies talking about her . . . they have been doing that at every practice we went to with Tara.” Timmy said

“She’s been so sad; we don’t like it when she is sad.” Eric said leaning into his mom.

Liz glanced at her husband.

“We want to make her happy but we don’t know how.” Eric continued.

“I know sweetheart,” Liz said gently stroking her sons head.

“We met Bobby . . .” Timmy said.

Liz glanced at her husband; her eyes lighting up with interest.

As she got her sons to explain, a plan forming in her mind.

Chapter Nine

Tara woke the next morning stretching wishing she had made it up to her bed as her body protested, from all the activity she had been doing. Doing a few of the things she had been putting off during the week, planning on heading to the batting cage later on that day.

She knew it would be crowded during the day and she had already embarrassed herself enough in public she’d wait until things slowed down.

Getting down what she needed to get done, she decided to head down to the cages early just to watch the other batters . . . maybe she would learn something.
She wandered past each of the cages until she came across a familiar figure.

Bobby was having no trouble hitting the balls. She watched him, the way his back muscles tightened just before the bat came in contact with the ball. The way the muscles in his arms seemed to ripple as he swung.

She watched him finish the set he was doing, before he turned and set down the bat before reaching for his water. She watched him tilt his head back trying to get every last drop of the water before lowering his head . . . his eyes meeting hers.

“Hey Luv,” He smiled walking towards the cage.

“Your very good,” she said softly unable to tear her eyes away from his, or the tank top he was wearing.

He smiled at her.

“How do you do it?” She asked.

“Do what?” He replied confused.

“How do you hit the ball?”

He watched her for a second before replying. “Go get a helmet Luv, I’ll help you”

Tara watched him for a moment longer then hurried off to get one. Returning he opened the gate for her. Tara tried not to let her knees go weak as she brushed past him into the cage.

He handed her the bat. “Now stand up there like your preparing to hit the ball.”

She did so, her form was just about right, “Now swing as if you’re going to hit the ball.”

She did that too.

Bobby came up behind her, sliding his arms around her, her back against his chest as he helped her adjust her stance, before moving with her as practice swings.

“It’s all in the way you move Luv,” He whispered next to her ear swallowing hard as the familiar smell of her soft perfume distracted him for what he was doing, and gave him the urge to want to press gentle kisses on the back of her neck.

He didn’t want to let go, not just yet; he moved with her a few more times, before stepping away.

“Give it a try.” He said his voice deep and husky.

She nodded and he stepped out of the cage watching her.

He had never seen a woman try as hard as she did, he wanted so badly for her to succeed. Yet she didn’t hit the ball once. He knew she was trying to hide her disappointment; he admired her strength and determination as she kept trying.

She tried for over an hour, Bobby coming into the cage every once in awhile, slipping his arms around her and helping to re-adjust her position. She still didn’t hit any thing.

“Thanks for trying Bobby. I had better get going.” She said.

He could tell the smile on her face was forced and his heart broke for her. He opened his mouth to say something when a familiar voice called his name.

He glanced up to see Sarah, Agent Colts’s sister approaching them.

“Hey Bobby, I remember you would be here . . . I was wondering if you would help me with my swings, I seem to be a bit off.” She said.

“I got to go Bobby, I’ll see you later.” Tara said slipping the helmet off before turning and heading towards the shack.

Bobby opened his mouth to say something never got the chance as Sarah led him back into the batting cage.

Tara went to the cashier asking to pay for a cage, one out of the way, away from the other batters. She nodded and told her cage 42. Tara nodded her thanks and headed back down the cages.

She found her cage, practiced still unable to hit the ball. She hated to take a break, hearing the sound of Bobby’s voice and the feminine laughter that echoed it. She tried not to picture him holding her like he had done with her. Tara tried not to be jealous, using the emotions to focus on the ball.

Tara practiced until the over head lights came on as the skies got dark. She had been here every night since Wednesday, staying until close and still was unable to hit the ball. . . . Tomorrow was the game. She sighed with frustration as she heard the voice behind her letting her know they were closing.

With another sigh she turned and left the cage. Driving herself home quietly not bothering to even turn on the radio, heading into her house she didn’t even bother to turn on the lights, just took a long hot shower before heading to bed, hoping that when she got up in the morning it would be pouring out.

Bobby hadn’t wanted to let her walk away; he wanted to go with her, take for ice cream; anything to see her beautiful smile again. Sarah hadn’t needed his help; he could tell she was purposely holding the bat wrong. He stood in front of her, adjusting her hands, directing her on how to stand. He didn’t help her the way he did with Tara.

A man liked to feel needed by someone who did truly need him. He knew Sarah was putting on an act, where Tara truly needed his help. She was independent enough not to ask for it but accepted it when it was offered to her. He admired that in her, knowing she had her strengths, and yet allowing others to help her with her weaknesses. Unknowingly she made a man feel needed but not overwhelmed by that need.

Calling an early night, he declined Sarah’s offer to go for a drink somewhere, and walked her to her car. Walking to his own car he thought he spotted a familiar one in the parking lot; but shook his head, knowing it couldn’t be hers, she had headed home two hours earlier.

Something in him directed him to her place and he parked across the street glancing up at her darken house. He sat there, debating on what to do; she wouldn’t have gone to bed this early, would she? He knew from holding her in his arms that her back was tense, from the way she was swinging she was sore but she never once complained.

Sighing he reached to start his car to head home, when in the rearview mirror he spotted the familiar car again. He watched as she pulled into her drive; slowly getting out, a frown on her face. She unlocked her door, dropping her keys on the ground as a large fat Tabby stepped out to greet her as the door opened. Tara bent down picking up her keys and the cat, burying her face in its fur as she went inside.

Bobby waited for the lights to come on, he wanted to go and knock on her door.
He watched one light come on, stay on for 15 minutes before shutting off and then nothing but darkness. He waited for another five minutes, then with a sigh headed home to bed.

I feel so bad for Tara. That had to hurt so much. At least she had a good teacher. Maybe I could learn to bat if Bobby were the teacher. tongue.gif

Chapter Ten

Tara woke the next morning, climbing out of bed, disappointed to see the sun shining bright and beautifully. “The one day I really wanted rain, or even snow and it turns out to be the brightest day of spring.” She sighed slowly making her way down the stairs.

Smurf ran beside her for once, instead of in-between her feet. She looked at the cat and frowned. “You can’t even try to trip me?” She asked rhetorically.

She slowly made her breakfast deciding on a piece of toast and some fruit. It was going to be a long day. When she could no long stall, she pulled on a pair of shorts and the F.B.I shirt she had been given.

Not bothering with makeup she headed down the stairs, pulling out the two bottles of water she froze, wrapped them in plastic before tucking them in her bag. She double checked Smurf’s food before heading out.

The day was already warm and she knew it would get hotter by mid afternoon. She wasn’t surprise to see others already at the field when she arrived, spectators and players. With how slow she was going today she wouldn’t be surprised if she was the last one to arrive. Getting out of the car she gathered her stuff and started towards the field.

She couldn’t hide her surprise when two familiar boys raced towards her.

“Tar . . . Tar!” They called.

“Hey guys, what are you doing here?” She asked them, as Timmy took the bag from her hand, and Eric took her glove, then using their free hands took hers, walking with her towards the bleachers.

“We came to see you kick the D.E.A’s behinds.” Timmy said as they approach Liz and Adam.

“We came to support you,” Adam chuckled messing up his son’s hair.

“Shouldn’t you be in bed? Resting?” Tara asked him eyeing his encased leg.

“And miss the game of the year?” He smiled.

“Or miss me embarrass myself and the F.B.I.” She mumbled under her breathe. Not realizing who else was in the crowd.

Sue sat next to Jack, Myles, D and Donna sitting behind them; she caught Tara’s words and frowned.

“What’s wrong?” Jack asked catching Sue’s expression.

“Tara . . . she is worried about embarrassing everyone.” Sue explained.

Jack and the rest of them frowned. They had come not only to support the Bobby and the F.B.I team, but especially Tara. Jack would be lying if he didn’t admit he was worried about how well she could play. It wasn’t about wining, even though they would like to beat the D.E.A, it was more of the fact that the other players could get hurt with Tara on their team; sports just never seemed to be Tara’s thing.

Tara headed to the team standing back slightly as they found out their positions. She wasn’t surprise to find she was in the out field or the last one up to bat. Tara realized she was the shortest person on the team.

“Why doesn’t that surprise me?” She mumbled to herself.

After losing the coin toss the F.B.I took to the field.

Bobby hadn’t seen her, in the huddle, and only spotted her when she took her position way back in the field. He hadn’t been impressed when he seen the line up and everyone else would of complained but not her. She took her position her head held high. Before the other team was ready Bobby jogged over to her.

“How you doing Luv,” he asked watching her.

Again she put on the fake smile, “all ready to go.”

Bobby reached into his back pocket and pulled out the hat sticking it on her head.

“You’re going to need this,” he smiled as she tilted her head to peer up at him from under the rim. “Don’t want the top of your pretty little head to get burnt.”

“Thanks,” this time her smile was real. She then reached up and adjusted it so she could see. “Good luck Bobby.”

“Good luck Luv,” he replied back starting to head back to his position.

“I need more then luck, I need a miracle,” he thought he heard her mumbled

Chapter Eleven

The game wasn’t going too badly. Very few balls came Tara’s way; which couldn’t have made her happier. It was the seventh inning and the score wasn’t too far apart. Tara had stuck out every time she had gone up to bat, doing her best to ignore the comments from some of her team mates but still supporting and encourage them.

She watched as the next batter took the field, a large man, who had a tendency to bunt the ball every time he was up at bat. She watched a few of her team mates took a couple of steps in. She didn’t know why but she knew this time that wasn’t his game plan. The moment the ball left the pitchers hand she start to race towards the middle of the field; a bare spot where one of the team mates had left open when he moved forward. She heard the crack of the bat and ball connecting, and mentally crossed her fingers in hope that she wouldn’t embarrass further herself by tripping.
She saw the ball coming her way, out of the corner of her eye spotted the team mate who had moved forward start to back up. She knew he would never make it on time. It was almost in reach. Fear took her that it would reach the ground first before she got to it; she did the only thing she could think of; she dove for it. She landed on the ground hard and painfully as her chest did nothing to soften her landing. She felt feet connect with her ribs as her team mate tripped over her.

“Oaf,” She said her eyes closed at the impact. In what seemed like forever but was merely seconds Tara opened her eyes and looked into her gloved hand ... the ball. She smiled brightly getting to her feet as she heard Bobby’s voice telling her to throw it to second. She didn’t think she just reacted turning slightly she threw the ball with all of her strength to second base.

She watched as the runner from first base tried her best to make it back to the base; Tara held her breathe hoping the ball would make it there . . . She heard the sound of it landing in the glove and the umpire saying “three outs, F.B.I up.”

She heard the familiar cheer of her friends and team mates from the bench; and the loud whistles from Adam and the cries of the boys. The smile on her face widen she turned back and helped her team mate back to his feet.

“Great catch,” He stated with a smile

“Thanks,” She replied walking back with him.

Bobby caught up to her wrapping his arm around her neck and tugging her to his side as he kissed the top of the hat on her head.

“Great catch Luv,” he said not letting her pull away.

Tara smiled up at him; Bobby’s heart nearly stopped at the sparkle in her eyes and the width of the smile on her face. He reached over to wipe a smug of dirt off her face. His eyes exploring her face taking in the beauty the smile only increased.

Tara didn’t get a chance to bat that inning which didn’t bother her. They scared enough runs to only need five more to win.

As the last of their team mates was tagged out, the D.E.A called a time out.

“One lucky catch,” she heard the familiar girl from the night before comment eyeing her.

Tara sighed and moved away heading to her bag to get some water.

Poor Tara! It's interesting when someone writes a fanfic that hasn't been done before, and I like how this one is centered around sports, and Tara feeling she's distanced from everyone. (I can really really relate to that)

Chapter Twelve

The F.B.I took to the field again, playing their hardest and prevent the D.E.A from scoring any more runs.

The F.B.I was up to bat again, two people already on the bases, Bobby up to bat. He hit it, but only managed to get the bases loaded.

Tara glanced at the two people up to bat ahead of her; Sarah and Mike, glad it was them. She couldn’t handle the pressure. She couldn’t believe it as Sarah struck out. Their first out . . . Mikes went up next.

She knew he could do it . . . he was their power hitter. As soon he knocked it out of the ballpark they would win the game.

Mike went up to bat, missed his first one, and then called a time out as his cell phone rang. Dropping the bat he took off towards the cars.

“I got to go Lori’s in labor!” He called out.

“That will count as strike too,” The ump stated.

Tara felt the blood rush from her face as it turned cold. She was up. There was no way that could be; she couldn’t be up . . .

Slowly she started towards home plate. Tara tried to ignore the comments from some of them on the bench that was mumbled as she walked by.

Taking a deep breathe she hadn’t even realized the bat in her hand.

“You can do it Tara!” She heard Sue call out.

“Go Tara!” D and Donna’s voice rang out

“Show them what you got Tippy,”

Tara glanced up for a moment taking a deep breathe. She raised the bat and waited for the pitch. She swung and missed.

“Strike one!”

She sighed.

Raising the bat again she waited as the ball came towards her, swung . . . missed.
She could hear the groan from some of her team mates.

Tara sighed, and then blinked a moment, Carl catching her eye as he stood behind the back stop. Tara took a step back.

“Don’t worry about the others, it doesn’t matter what they think. You put in long hours to even get this far. Tara when you started you couldn’t even catch the ball. How many windows did you break? Do this for you, feel the confidence you have in yourself. Did you ever believe that you could catch the ball as you did? To even be playing the game at all. This isn’t for them it’s for you. Just imagine the bat connecting with the ball.”

Tara looked at him for a moment, seeing what he was saying. She nodded and was making her way back to the plate when on first base Bobby caught her eye. She caught his wink and followed his eyes as he glanced down at his hands. Although roughly spelt out he signed “You rock,”

Tara smiled at him, adjusted her hat and turned back to the plate.

“Take three small steps to your left,” She heard Adam call out.

Tara listened taking small steps to her.

“Perfect, go get them Sprite.”

Tara raised the bat, watched as the pitcher wound up and let go of the ball.

She closed her eyes, doing just as Carl said she imagined the bat and the ball connecting. Tara felt the vibration in her hands and the crack as she released all the effort she had put into it over the past week into her swing.

She opened her eyes as she watched the ball go sailing through the air. Her eyes showed her shock as her face light up.

“Run Tara!” She heard called out.

She dropped the bat and took off toward first base rounding the plates. She got to the third base and watched as the ball was just about in the pitchers hands.

“Run Luv, go home!”

Tara listened, taking off, she didn’t look over her shoulder or else she would have known that the ball was in the pitchers hand, as he decided to race her to home plate. Tara didn’t hear anything but the sound of her feet pounding against the run lines, and her own breathing. Yet someone’s voice broke through. “SLIDE SPRITE SLIDE”

Tara didn’t know how to slide but she tried anyways. At the speed she was going the dust kicked up as she slid the rest of the way towards the plate.

The crowd was silent; Jack, Sue, Myles, D and Donna all standing trying to see uselessly though the dust. Liz and the boys stood there, still as statues.

The team stood there watching, wanting to know; their fingers crossed and their eyes closed, hoping and praying.

Bobby watched trying to see Tara; through the dust filled air surrounding the plate. He didn’t dare to breathe.

There was a cough from the ump.

Chapter Thirteen

Tara felt the weight land on her as her hand touched something smooth and dusty. She slowly glanced down and spotted the plate under her hand. The D.E.A agent lying on top of her; the ball had fallen out of his hand . . . but it didn’t matter she had gotten to the plate before he did. . . .

“SAFE . . .” She heard, followed by the loud cheer of triumphant.

Tara wiggled her way out from under the D.E.A agent excited, she cheered as she raced towards Bobby who was already running towards her.

She threw herself into his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck. He caught her held her tight to him.

“I did it . . . I hit my first ball!” She cried then in the excitement she pulled his mouth to hers and kissed him.

All the built up emotions pour out of her through the kiss. He returned it, pulling her closer to him, his tongue running long hers seeking entry; and when she opened her mouth to him he groaned. Needing air she pulled back and out of his arms, shocked at what she had just done.

She didn’t get time to think about it . . . as she felt arms go around her legs, hugging her.

“We knew you could do it Tar!” Eric and Timmy cheered

Tara hugged them back tightly. “I owe it to you two.” She whispered. “You two are the best, don’t ever change.”

They hugged her back. Tara felt hands on her back and words of congratulations.

Letting the boys go, she shook hands with members of the other team, telling them honestly that they had played a great game. They commented on her catch and her hit, one asked her what she who she knew in the F.B.I.

“Actually I work for the F.B.I.” Tara explained.

“Hey F.B.I, we’re recruiting her.”

“Not on your life, D.E.A, get your own computer genius.” She heard D reply.

“Pizza at Canteni’s on the D.E.A!” Someone called out. The D.E.A agents groaned but nodded.

Tara wrapped her arms around the each of the twin’s shoulders. “Come on guys, I’ll buy you pizza and ice cream.” The boys cheered. Tara stopped by Liz and Adam, both hugging her.

“I knew you could do it,” Carl giving her a hug after the other two was finished.

“You were great Sprite.” Adam stated.

Tara blushed. “Come on you too, I’m buying Pizza and Ice Cream,”

“Tara you don’t need to . . .” Liz started.

“Rocky Road,” Adam asked his eyes rising.

Tara nodded, “Consider it your treat for raising such great, helpful and patient kids. You too Carl, without the little pep talk and Adams last minute instructions I don’t think I would have hit the ball.”

“You would have,” Carl insisted, “You have it in you; you just need to forget about everything and everyone else.”

Adam nodded in agreement before adding. “In that case, sweetheart I think we need to have more kids.” Adam teased Liz

Liz smacked his arm as she rolled her eyes.

“Ouch honey, I’m an injured man.”

Tara, Liz and Carl all rolled their eyes, before helping him to his feet and handing him his crutches.
“Can we ride with Tar?” The boys asked.

Liz glanced up at Tara who smiled and had the look on her face as if asking the same thing.

“Alright, we’ll meet you at the restaurant.” Liz said as the boys took Tara’s hands and pulled her with them, as they ran for the car.

She did it! She did it! SHE DID IT!!!!! Way to go Tara, and way to go Treenie! That kiss was a mighty good reward, although it was waaaaay too short.

The Losing team did, and Tara invited Liz and family since to her with out htem she would of even been able to catch the ball let alone hit it

Chapter Fourteen

Tara sat with Liz, Adam, Carl and the Boys. Thanking the people who stopped to congratulate her. She kept replying it was a team effort; she just hit one ball.

“Tara, come play a video game with us.” Timmy said getting off the bench seat taking her hand.

She followed the boys, feeling Bobby’s eyes on her. She paused at their table for a moment.

“Great hit Tara,” Sue said.

“Good job,”

“I think you need a new nickname.”

Tara smiled thanking them before the boys took her hands again and pulled her away.

Bobby glanced at his team mates.

“I never thought she would have it in her.” Myles commented.

The others nodded in agreement.

“Manning, you got lucky on that one” One of Bobby’s team mates stated as she approached. “Taking a chance on her like that could have cost us the game.”

“You’re not a good sportsman.” A little voice said from behind him.

The agent turned to see who said it.

“It’s not about winning it’s about going out there, trying your best and having fun.” The little redhead boy stated. The agent looked at him. “My father taught me that. And my father should know, he use to play.”

“I am sure your father was very good at T-ball, but when you get older you will realize that . . .”

“See that picture up there,” Eric said pointing at the framed sports photos on the wall. “The man in the Middle is my father. Adam Leviten.”

The Agents mouth dropped when he realized that he was speaking to the son of an ex-pro ballplayer.

The rest of the team was silent as shock set in.

“Eric come on it’s your turn, or Tar just might beat us.” Timmy called out.

Tara glanced up watching Eric excuse himself from her table of co-workers and rush over.

“I like your friends Tar, they are nice. Jack and Bobby even helped Timmy and I reach something on the high shelf at Carl’s shop.”

“At Carl’s shop . . . when did you see them there?”

“They were there last Friday when we were getting the glove.” Timmy finished for him.

“We weren’t trying to eavesdrop, but we figured it was ok since they seemed to be listening to what ever you and Carl were talking about.”

Tara froze.

“Bobby said something about feeling guilty and a risk and taking one for the team.” Timmy finished for his brother.

Tara’s heart broke, she had known that she wasn’t his first choice, and was his last choice, but it still hurt. It was bad enough that she didn’t have any confidence in herself, but to know that her friends had the same doubts hurt. She knew she shouldn’t let it get to her after all she had no faith in her ability, that still didn’t stop it from hurting.

“I’m going to head to the girls room, you guys don’t move from here, and don’t talk to strangers.”

The boys nodded and Tara hurried off. She heard the talking when she entered. With the way the bathroom was set up, one could get to the stalls before going to the sinks. Tara quietly stepped in closing herself into a stall resting her head against the stall door; trying to compose herself.

“That Bobby sure took a risk asking that shrimp to play. She could barely catch, and never hit a think until that last hit.” An all too familiar voice said. “A co-worker of Colts’s said that he must have felt guilty or like he owed her something to even consider risking her playing at all” Sarah continued.

Tara swallowed back the tears.

“And if she didn’t embarrass him enough during the practices, and then during the game, did you see the way she threw herself at him afterward. It was bad enough that she looked like she was going to be like those T-ball players who go running home after they hit the ball . . . but I mean to throw herself at him. Who does she think she is fooling? She isn’t his type; she’ll never be his type. A man like Bobby Manning doesn’t want a woman like her. She needs to go back to her little computer and mouse and stay where she belongs.

Tara was proud of herself as Sarah’s words shattered the last bit of confidence she had just built up; she didn’t break out in tears. Swallowing hard she opened the stall door washed her hands out of habit, and then left the room.

“Come on boys lets go back to the table,” she said retrieving them from the game.

Hey were about to protest but seeing the look on Tara’s face they didn’t quietly following her back to their table.

“I don’t mean to cut and run but I am going to go,” Tara said softly not meeting their eyes.

“Sprite, are you alright?”

“Tara, don’t listen to a word they said.” Liz stated as she returned from the bathroom.

She had heard what the woman was staying herself having been in the bathroom. If her stomach hadn’t been disagreeing with her she would of said something . . . guilt filled her, no that was only an excuse, she really didn’t know why she didn’t say anything. Liz had finished being sick and was exiting her stall when she caught the familiar figure of Tara leaving the bathroom. She knew she had heard what they said.

“They only spoke the truth, right on all accounts.” Tara replied leaving a large bill on the table. “Excuse me.”

It was then she was gone.

Tara’s ribs hurt from where her team mate accidentally tripped over her. Her body ached . . . she knew she was going to be sore tomorrow.

She made it home in silence, trying not to think, she pulled her car into the garage, not wanting anyone to know she was home. Locking all the doors, leaving the lights off and shutting off the ringers to her phones, she gathered candles and lightly them after placing them around her bathroom. Filling the tub with hot water and her favorite bubble bath she slid in trying to ease her sore body. Smurf climbed up onto the side of the tub, brushing his head against hers, purring as she closed her eyes. Tara stayed in the tub until the water turned cold.

Getting out and drying off she put on her favorite pair of comfort pjs, put out the candles. Then climbed into bed; Smurf snuggling up to her as the dam finally broke.

Chapter Fifteen

Bobby watched as Tara and the boys headed back to their table, the boy’s mother not far behind her. By the look on the woman’s face he knew something wasn’t right. Tara stood there rigid and tense, before gathering her things and headed out the door.

The crowd was starting to die down when Carl approached their table.

“Hey mate,” Bobby nodded, then introducing everyone to him.

Carl nodded to them, as his hands tightened on a yellow envelope he was holding.

“You played great; I think the best team won, although they did give you a run for your money.”

“True and we wouldn’t have done it with out Tara,” Bobby smiled.

“Ah, speaking of that, I think you may want to see this,” He said handing the envelope to Jack.

Jack gave him a puzzled look and accepted it, lifting the flap and slowly sliding the contents up so he could see it. His mouth tightened.

“Is this some sort of joke? Is it supposed to be funny?” He asked

The rest of the team looked at him confused.

“You tell me, from what I could piece together, Tara received it.” He explained. “She came in the other afternoon with it in her hands, and accidentally left it on my counter. I hadn’t realized what it was until after I opened it.”

Jack handed the envelope to Bobby, as the others around him leaned in for a look.

“Where did this come from?” He growled.

“She never said a word about it.” Liz said joining them, her husband and the boys not far behind her. “But I have a pretty good iD.E.A.”
They all looked at her, “Just tell me something, why did you ask her to play?” Liz asked watching Bobby.

“Because he felt bad mom, we heard him say so Last week in Carl’s shop when Tara was talking to Carl.” Timmy said.

Liz turned her eyes to Bobby.

“I admit I felt bad, I hadn’t even considered her, she never played any of the games with us . . . but then we had never asked.” Bobby started.

“Tara understands that,” Carl started. “That is why she has been practicing her heart out. The boys taught her how to catch and throw . . .”

“Tara taught us how to replace the windows she broke.” Eric stated proudly.

Carl chuckled, “She practiced with the boys and me . . . and since Thursday night she stayed at the batting cages until closing. She put in such an effort, I have never been so proud of anyone. Yet she never seen the things she thrived in, just noticed the things she couldn’t do. And as much as she tried to improve on them, she couldn’t. She put in so much effort into learning this game; the effort starting for herself, but the determination to succeed only grew stronger when she felt like she was an embarrassment.”

“An embarrassment; Tara,” D asked confused.

“We never seen Tara as an embarrassment,” Lucy stated, as the other nodded in agreement.

“Maybe not you, but the rest of the ball team seemed to like so,” Adam stated. “We raise our boys to understand that a game is just a game, it’s not about winning or losing, it’s about putting in the effort, trying your best; sportsmanship.”

“Eric and Timmy look up as Tara as a role model; a role we have no problem with. She works hard, there for her friends; she shows us we mean something to her. Her want to learn the game for herself, as well as to play on the team, only reinforced our belief in her. That’s one of the reasons we are coming to you about this; the other is we don’t want to she her hurting.”

“Hurting?” Bobby asked feeling a panic rising inside.

“Why is Tara hurting?” Donna asked softly, although being a mother she had a pretty good idea.

“If our team was as mean to us as yours was to Tar . . . I’d be upset too.” Timmy said.

“They didn’t make very nice comments to her, they made fun of her . . . I don’t know why, I thought she was doing pretty good for someone who hadn’t been playing long.” Eric finished.

Bobby eyes widen in shock, he hadn’t heard any comments, but then he hadn’t always been around.

“Very poor sportsmanship, but Tara tried to keep a smile on her face . . . she would even buy us ice cream after practice, she didn’t eat any with us, only bought a tub with her to bring home.”

Liz raised her eyes at Tara’s friends. “How much do you want to bet that they found that joke rather funny?” She asked nodding towards the envelope.

Bobby let what they were saying sink in, he never really cared about winning, he just enjoyed the game, enjoyed the company, and like the challenges, although he would admit beating the D.E.A always felt good. But he had never made fun of another player, especially not one who tried as hard as Tara had been.

“Don’t worry . . . we still like you. We told Tar how you and Jack helped us at Carl’s shop when we caught you eavesdropping on their conversation . . .” Timmy started.

“We told her that we thought it was ok for us to do it because you were, but don’t worry we didn’t tell Tara all that you said, just that you said something about feeling guilty and a risk.” Eric added.

“Oh and something about taking one for the team.” The boys finished together

Bobby felt the blood drain from his face, as he glanced up at Jack, who seemed to go as pale as he felt.

They felt the rest of the team looking at them.

“That is . . .” Jack started.

“It wasn’t meant in that way, I felt guilty after realizing that I hadn’t even bothered to ask Tara if she would like to play . . . even though Jack had pointed out the iD.E.A a couple of times.” Bobby started to explain.

“The taking one for the team was meant towards, well us. Tara would be taking one for the team. We know she isn’t a sports fan and she would be doing us a favor by playing.” Jack explained, “If she hadn’t then we would have had to forfeit.”

“And the risk,” Adam asked watching them.

“It had nothing to do with the game.” Bobby said, saying all he was going to say on the topic.

“Where is Tara now?” Sue asked glancing for her.

“She went home, I am sure after those late nights of practices, and the game today she’s pretty tired out.” Liz suggested. She knew Tara was a private woman, and she decided to keep the little information about the bathroom conversation to herself. She wasn’t going to reveal Tara’s feelings for Bobby.

“Speaking of which, you had better do the same, that boys been on that leg long enough.” Carl said nodding to Adam.

Donna held up her crutches . . . “rollerblading, you?”

“Car accident,” He replied. “I need to go and put this leg up, and you sweet heart need to check on Tara. Make sure she puts some ice on the shoulder of hers, and properly bandaged her leg.”

“Whoa . . . wait a minute, what’s wrong with Tara?” Lucy asked concerned for her friend.

“With all the practicing she has been doing, throwing and swinging the bat, her shoulders have got to be pretty sore. And I don’t know if anyone else noticed but after slide she favored her left leg. She didn’t quite slide properly.” Adam explained.

“I’ll . . .” Bobby started.

“I’ll take care of it, I have a key.” Liz said. “It was nice meeting you all; it was a great game congratulation.” She nodded.

“Good game,” The boys nodded before following their parents and Carl out the door.

After making sure Adam and the boys were comfortable, Liz headed over to Tara’s place, knocking on the door. There was no answer from the darken house and she wondered if Tara had even headed home. She tried again before heading back home and trying both her home phone and cell. Leaving a message on both; she then joined her family in front of a video.

Treenie - I'm so glad that I found your story.....it's ABOSOLUTELY MARVELOUS! I love how you've written Tara. She still has that warmth and strength to her, yet we see her vunerable side. I can't believe how mean the team was to her. And Bobby....after that kiss I would think that you would want to check up on Tara too. I'm so glad that you have a deadline with this one! I can't wait to read the rest! biggrin.gif

OK so i warned you guys. What is a Treenie Fanfic with out . . . . .. ANGST

Chapter Sixteen

Tara woke early the next morning, her body stiff and sore. Her leg ached from the slide, her shoulders were stiff, and her ribs were just plain sore. Getting up she contemplated going for a jog, then changed her mind. Hadn’t she done enough to her body yesterday? She decided on another activity that she figured would benefit her body as well as give her the exercise she wanted. Grabbing an apple and a granola bar she tucked them in her swim bag and headed to the community pool.

Bobby arrived early as he always did, getting a head start on his paperwork, all the while glancing over at Tara’s desk waiting for her to arrive.

He wanted to talk to her, but first he was going to talk to the ball team. They all decided that they would head out tonight after work for a celebratory drink; all of them but Tara who hadn’t been around when the subject was brought up. He had a few things he needed to get off his chest.

Bobby watched as everyone else arrived but still no Tara. Finally twenty minutes later then she normally arrived she walked through the door, a box of donuts in her hands and her hair still damp.

“Over sleep Luv,” He asked getting up to take the donuts from her.

“Nope, went for a swim this morning, my body had enough for running for a few days.” She smiled up at him,

Things got busy for the team. They were trying to track down a bomber who decided to see how well the team played his game; keeping them busy until Wednesday afternoon when they got a tip of his whereabouts.

After leading them to a commercial warehouse, the guys went in; easily arresting him; he surrendered something that seemed to weigh heavy on each of their minds . . . it had been way too easy.

Bobby glanced over to D and Myles who were securely holding onto the man who had been taunting them all week. His take down was far too simple, he surrendered way too easily. Bobby knew in his gut something wasn’t right.

“Hey you should be pretty happy, we got him,” Jack said giving Bobby a slap on the back. “What’s with the frown?”

“It was too simple Jack, something isn’t right.” Bobby stated voicing his concerns.

“Maybe you were just expecting more, I know I was after the way he ran his mouth off.” Jack suggested.

“Remember with the sniper, how you just had that feeling?” Bobby asked him.

“Yeah . . .” Jack replied frowning.

“I have that feeling.”

Bobby opened the door, holding it as Myles and D escorted the bomber out, before another S.W.A.T member took over.

They had only gone a few feet from the building when in front of their eyes the surveillance van just exploded, knocking them all off their feet. The Bomber; the only one expecting the blast remained on his feet, moving to take off. Bobby scrambled t o his feet fast enough to grab the man’s collar as he tried to run past him. The man jerked back at the unexpected resistance and landed hard onto his back. “Take him,” Bobby demanded as two other S.W.A.T members moved to help him, his mind focused on the team members who were inside the van. The four of them started for the van, hoping to get to the two women inside before it was too late. But they didn’t stand a chance, only moving a step or two when the van exploded again this time knocking it off the ground.

“TARA! SUE!” Bobby heard voices cry, surprised to realize one of them was his own.

They stood there in shock, not believe what was in front of their eyes, this could not be happening.

The sound of the bombers laughter filled the air, causing Bobby’s fury to rise. He turned quickly moving towards the man, if one could call him that.

Beating Jack to him, he gripped the front of the man’s shirt. “WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?”
