2006 Summer Blockbuster Challenge

Everyone likes a great Summer Blockbuster, and with the summer of 2006 just around the corner, we thought it would be fun to take six great movie titles and let you put your own twist on them. This Sue Thomas F.B.Eye challenge is another original challenge; each entire story will be the author's own work. The movie isn't your guide... just use the title and let your muse interpret it.

You are welcome to respond to any of the themes you wish – with over two months until the conclusion of the challenge, there is time for multiple entries! Here are the titles from which you can choose:

Option 1: Animal House

Option 2: Independence Day

Option 3: Mission Impossible

Option 4: My Best Friend's Wedding

Option 5: Ransom

Option 6: You've Got Mail

The stories will be judged by the readers within the following categories:

1. Best Drama
2. Best Comedy
3. Best Mystery
4. Best Action
5. Best Fourth of July Theme (it is the FBI, after all)
6. Best Romance (J/S Pairing)
7. Best Romance (Other Pairing)
8. Best Themed Story (one award for each title)
9. Best Original Character
10. Best Short Story (5,000 words or less)
11. Best Junior Writer (age 18 and/or younger)*
12. Best New Writer**

* If your date of birth is not in your profile and you qualify as a junior writer, please notify justme_jp3 by PM so you can be included.

** To qualify as a New Writer, you must have no more than 2 stories/scenes on the board at the time of entering the challenge.

The Challenge opens immediately and runs through July 31, at midnight in your location. To enter, simply select the theme option you are going to write (1 – 6) and place your name in the title (for example: Mission Impossible - justme_jp3). Don’t forget to include your rating (G, PG, PG13, PG17) in the description line!

It’s time to start writing.gif and let the challenge begin!! smile.gif

can we use the movies as kind of a guide to help with ideas? or does it have to be completely original with ideas and all?
justme_jp3
The storyline should be completely original, and not modeled after the movie. For example, say I wanted to use the title "You've Got Mail." Rather than following the storyline acted so well by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, I might choose to write a story where a letter gets delivered to Tara that was postmarked April 3, 1942, and sparks a mystery as she tries to find the woman named Tara who used to live in her building, and in the process finds out this other Tara was a war bride whose husband never returned from the front, and this was his last letter written to her.

We're looking for original and creative twists on these titles, so grab your pen (or keyboard) and give it a go!!! writing.gif

sorry, still a little confused, like becuase im gonna do the my bestfriends wedding thing i cant like use the whole jules trying to get michael to marry her instead and george is like her best friedn kinda thingy. that was my idea to do with the stfbe charachters obviously with my own twists and stuff.
TinaLynne
The idea for the challenge is not to think of the movie's storyline, but to take the title and use that as your theme or idea. Think of the title and then write a completely original story, using the characters from STFBE.
Rosa17
Can I write a STFBE AU fic?
TinaLynne
Yes, you can write an Alternate Universe story for the challenge. Interested to see what you come up with! smile.gif
Rosa17
Thanks I need to look up some things before I start to write it. smile.gif

*AH waves sheepishly from the corner*

Can i enter more than one story in the same category? Say two short stories with different titles?

Just wondering....

AH
justme_jp3
Yes, you can enter two (or more) short stories in the challenge, as long as they are under different titles. Keep writing.gif

i wonder if this is a crazy quest, but do the stories have to include a pairing or have a romantic lean to them at all? thanx;-D
justme_jp3
It's not a crazy question, and the answer is no, it doesn't have to have a pairing or a romantic storyline (or undertone), even though this is the romancefanfiction website... wink.gif

I have a question. So based on what's said in the above quote, does this mean a person can't write two entries for eg, "My Best Friend's Wedding", even if the two stories will have a different plotline and ending? biggrin.gif
justme_jp3
That is correct. Since we've given you six titles to choose from, we're going to limit the number of responses to one story per title per author. That allows you a total of six possible entries.
crazy4stfbe
I understand you have to have 2 or less stories/scenes on the board to qualify as a new writer, so your third story would still count as you being a new writer. If you were to write 4 challenge stories, would the fourth count as you still being a new writer?
justme_jp3
It's not the stories that are up for vote, but the writer. If you're a new writer (ie: you have two or less stories on the board at the start of the challenge), then the members are voting for you, as a writer, rather than your story(ies).
crazy4stfbe
Thank you!

I have another question....

If I were to start a challenge and found that I couldn't finish it in time for the deadline, could someone move it to WIP? Or would I have to just end it and post a sequel/continuation in WIP?

And if I were to mark it with the wrong rating? Would it be possible to change it, or would I just put an extra warning at the beginning of the post?

I know, I'm asking all these questions and I don't even have a story in the challenge yet. tongue.gif I am trying to get one in there, just as soon as school lets out.

Any challenge story not completed by midnight on the deadline will be automatically moved to the WIP forum for continuation/completion. Only those stories that are truly completed will be considered for voting selection.

If you need the rating changed on your story, please PM the moderator of the forum or one of the admins and it will be changed in your description for you.
