Thanks for the feedback, a little more as I have a week off smile.gif

The next week brought a break in the weather and everyone rushed out into the snow to play, to make snowmen and have snowball fights, all except Lucy who watched from the porch and Alice and Ruth who were helping Eleanor clean out the bunkhouse. The crying of Lydia made her turn her head to the noise and she walked into the kitchen, the baby was there alone., Sue being outside, even Myles was joining in the fun which surprised Lucy she hadn’t thought him the type.

Lucy walked to the crib and looked down at the baby who was red in the face from her distress, taking one glance behind her Lucy bent down and gingerly picked up the crying babe. Lydia looked at Lucy and stopped crying her face still wet from her tears, surprised that this person who showed her little or no interest had picked her up. Lucy noted that she was wet and needed changing, she knew what to do having watched Sue or Ruth change her in the few weeks she had been at the farm. Lucy cradled the baby under one arm and set to getting the paraphernalia out for a diaper change.

Sue after losing badly in the snowball fight found herself compressed down in the snow with a number of small and one large body squashing her. The children got up quickly, eager to make new snowballs for their next target which happened to be Myles.

Jack however didn’t move she looked at him and said “Are you getting off me because it’s cold down here”

His eyes twinkled as he said “But I could make you warmer”

“I know but everyone is out here and I need to check on Lydia”

“Okay” he reluctantly agreed and kissed her cold nose before hauling her to her feet, her dress and coat sodden and he knew she’d have to change, something else he wouldn’t mind helping her with.

^^^^

Sue made her way up the porch steps and stopped suddenly when on opening the door which had been left ajar she saw Lydia in the arms of Lucy, she wasn’t sure but it looked like Lucy was talking to her. Sue looked carefully at Lucy’s lips, she still couldn’t be certain but she thought that Lucy might be singing Lydia a lullaby. Not wanting to disturb the moment she closed the door to and went upstairs to change into dry clothes, smiling to herself that the first time Lucy had come close to speaking it was singing a song to comfort Lydia. How beautiful and touching was that?

^^^^

That afternoon the children begun their lessons and Sue asked Lucy if she would like to join in. Lucy looked at her suddenly panic stricken and Sue suggested that she just watch and Lucy smiled happy with that idea, but as the lesson progressed Sue knew that Lucy was paying more attention than the children were.

I really enjoy reading this story... I have a feeling this story is full of tenderness to everyone around. I love Sue and Jack's love, the way everybody lives on the farm, the way Sue "works" with Luce...

I apologise that I haven't updated, I have a problem with my ISP. I spoke to my server provider yesterday and they have confirmed that there is a problem, hopefully it will be sorted soon.

At least I can use my PC to write more story so there will be plenty to post when I get back online.

I wasn't going to post an update while sitting in the internet cafe but I decided to give you a little snippet.

Thanks for feedback, sorry again, please bear with me. smile.gif

A little snippet for you all, sorry I don't have enough time to stop and catch up on everyone else's stories too.

Five days later and everyone was in the main kitchen even Howie and Wayne, when a visitor pulled up in a wagon and knocked on the door. Jack got up from his chair by the fire, glanced at everyone with shrug and with Levi in tow went to answer it. Moments later the large form of Bobby came into the room, Sue got up from her own seat and welcomed him and then he nodded to everyone in turn.

'You still here Myles?' he said 'I didn't know if you could hack the early morning routine they have going here'

'Yes well' said Myles 'It has been a challenge'

'I bet it has' Bobby replied 'Any coffee going spare it's cold out there today and I see you're all huddled up in here today'

'Conserves energy and there's a bad leak in the roof of the bunk house' explained Jack 'I need to go to and buy some bits and pieces from Allie's, not to mention the girls need sugar and the like'

'Ah a trip to town is on the horizon, when this lot go into town, it's considered a day out' Bobby told Myles with a grin

Sorry I haven't time to finish the installment I have to go and check my email and things. Hope to post the rest soon.

Hi I'm back I don't know how long for though as I still don't think the problem is fixed properly I have a feeling the next time I try to log online it will refuse me. So I'm going to take the opportunity to finish the update from yesterday that you kindly left feedback for. I don't know if my updating will be sporadic or not, if so please be patient. Thanks for all your feedback, made me feel much better this PC thing is frustrating. smile.gif

“In this weather?” asked Jack

“It’s not snowing today, what’s your problem I drove over here straight from town”

“You have to pass your place first wasn’t that a bit odd?” asked Wayne

“No, I need to talk get something off my chest before I see Tara”

”You two had a fight?” asked Ruth

“Oh no nothing like that, we were low on supplies, sugar, flour so I went into town unfortunately I met Mr Pitts just outside the store, Allie says hi, hopes you and Sue are good. Mr Pitts says can I step into his office and then gives me this spiel about how we have fallen behind on our repayments. I knew about it Tara said” Bobby sighed heavily

“What you gonna do?” asked Jack

Bobby shrugged and said “Sell a horse maybe, the one you bought, that should see us through the winter, It’s just he’s such an irritating little man, who does he think he is?”

“Calm down Bobby it’s because he thinks he has the power over you and everyone else who has borrowed money from his little bank” said Jack “Don’t beat yourself up on it”

“I guess not” he said then looking at Myles added “You look like you need to pay Randy Pitts a visit, a loan for a new set of clothes wouldn’t go amiss those look like they’ve seen better days and fitted a smaller man much better than they fit you”

Myles looked disgruntled and said “Where is town, I don’t remember seeing a town after we left the town with the rail road, that was a day and a half journey from here”

“That’s not the town he means, you remember on our way here we passed a street with houses and buildings and such?” asked Jack

“Yes” said Myles slowly

“That was town” said Bobby

“That was town?” repeated Myles “but it was a row of buildings”

“Well that is town”

“Does it have stores?”

“It has a bank run by the infamous Mr Randy Pitts, a general store run by a woman named Allie who once had a thing for and with Jack, a saloon but I don’t recommend you go in there looking as you do now, a doc, a feed store, a livery and blacksmith, a tailor, a sheriff, a church and a school”

“And that’s it?” said Myles who was used to so much more

“That’s it” said Ruth “but the church I took you to that day that’s our local church and we have to wait for lay preachers, they come and go and this time of year are few and far between” as Myles wondered if he could help Bobby without Bobby knowing it was Myles who helped him.

Thanks for comments smile.gif A little bit more as I wrote lots the last few days smile.gif

It was another week before there was a trip to town, everyone went, the wagon was full of people and Myles, Howie and Wayne rode alongside on horseback. Myles went to see the tailor while everyone else was doing what they needed to do.

Myles opened the door of the bank it was a small building built of brick; one of three properties built such, the other two being the general store and the doctors house.

“Can I help you?” said a small balding man in a black suit and a distinctively irritating voice.

“I need some money” said Myles absently as he looked around

“We all need money that’s why I’m here” said the man, Myles assumed to be Randy Pitts.

“I have an account here with this bank in Boston” said Myles pushing a piece of paper across the dividing railings “I would like for the said amount to be transferred here, I would also like to speak to you in private have you an office?”

“I do” said the little man who then looked down his half moon glasses to read the information Myles had passed through. “I’ve heard of the Leland’s in Boston, Phillip Leland was a good business man”

“Yes he was he was also my father, now I haven’t much time a word in your office if you please”

“Certainly, certainly” said the smaller man his eyes gleaming at Myles. The tall man in front of him might look like a nomad by his attire but his name alone gave him status and Randy was more than willing to do whatever he could for him, if it meant he gained money in the process.

When they were seated in his office Randy asked “So Mr Leland what can I do for you?”

“When the funds have come through from Boston, I would like you to anonymously pay Mr Manning’s outstanding mortgage debt”

“With your money?” asked Randy not expecting such a generous offer for the lofty farmer.

“Of course with my money” snapped Myles “But it has to remain anonymous and you needn’t tell him anything until he comes by the bank or town”

“I can assure you that won’t be for some time, I am more likely to pay him at visit at home, which is not what I like to do but a man like myself must live in a manner in which he is accustomed wouldn’t you say Mr Leland”

“Once yes but recently I’m not so sure”

“Did you inherit your fathers business?”

“No, my brother in law did. I haven’t, much interest in family affairs and I believe the war took it’s toll on the business and that I am well out of it”

“Oh I didn’t realise, I am sorry are you sure you can afford to help Mr Manning”

“I have plenty of funds of my own thanks to wise investment as a younger man. Please bear that in mind funds, which I have no wish or desire to transfer here to this little backwater. I am staying here for a time and would be grateful if you would be able to arrange for the transfer of funds when I require them. I will be sending a letter to my investment holders, which should arrive separately to your request for money so that they know exactly how much I have asked for. Do I make myself clear?”

“Perfectly” said Randy wrinkling his nose at Myles “Loud and clear, is that all or may I be of further service to you?”

“That is all, Good day” said Myles standing “I’ll find my own way out”

Randy sat there for a few moments stunned, no one talked to him like that usually but then again everyone else owed him or more precisely the bank money.

Lovely post Rosa! I loved Myles being so nice to Bobby!

Thanks for feedback here is today's post smile.gif

“You get done what you needed to?” asked Jack to Myles

“Yes thank you my wardrobe won’t be ready for two weeks however”

“That’s pretty quick but this time of year work is kind of slow” said Jack “Come to the store I’ll introduce to a few people”

“Oh well I don’t know” said Myles

“Come on” said Jack patting the taller man on the shoulder “They don’t bite I promise”

The room seemed to be heaving with people and most of them were from the Hudson farm, Sue sat in a corner nursing the baby talking to a young dark haired woman, even Lucy was gazing about her with some interest at the wares on offer. Myles found himself at the counter and facing another dark haired woman whom he thought was attractive.

“Myles this is an old friend of mine Allie, she owns the store” said Jack and then went off to talk to a man who had just entered

“Pleased to meet you, you own the store?”

She smiled at him and said “I inherited from my parents, it’s a good business, I meant to find myself a good man, settle down have a family, but Jack went and fell in love with Sue instead”

“I heard you had a thing”

“When we were growing up I guess, but then Sue walked into his life and it was love at first sight and that as they say was that”

“I don’t know if I believe in love at first sight” said Myles stoically “In fact I don’t know if I believe in love at all, with possibily the recent exception of Jack and Sue”

“Yeah they have something special that everyone round these parts wish they have” she said wistfully, then changing the subject added “So can I be of assistance is there anything you would like to buy from my store today?”

“I don’t think so I made a trip to the tailor, and I am sure I’m good for everything else”

“Well anytime you’re popping by you know where I am”

“I recognise most people in your store as they live at the farm but who is that grey haired guy and then the dark haired girl with Sue and that other guy talking to Jack”

“Okay I’ll tell you who they are would that help?”

“Very much so” said Myles nodding

“The greying guy is the Sheriff, his name is Wes, the girl with Sue is called Lily her parents you would have met them are the tailor and his wife. And lastly the guy with Jack is another farmer there are a lot of farmers round and about here his name is Jonathan Hammond”

“Thank you that was enlightening, if someone like myself wanted to eat out once in a while where would that be?”

Allie laughed and said “You could try the saloon failing that the next town it’s just over a day’s ride so you’d want to stay over in their hotel unless you were going to take the train someplace. Sometimes Jack and Sue go there for a romantic getaway”

“Thank you” said Myles “You’ve been helpful”

^^^^
Lucy felt the pretty print fabric run through her fingers and wished that she might have a new dress one day made out of material like this. The dress that Sue had given her was soft but worn. There were so many people in the store and Lucy wanted to hide but at the same time she wanted to explore, the goods on sale were fascinating, she never knew you could buy so much, trouble was she didn’t have any money to buy anything, but she made a decision as she stood in the store that one day she would and she’s come back buy the material for the dress, sew it herself if necessary and then walk proudly down the street in her finery.

Sue watched Lucy from her corner Lily had gone back home and she just enjoyed to watch those she loved window shopping, the kids came up asking if they could have this and the other, sometimes Sue said yes, if perhaps it was a yard of ribbon for the girls hair or some candy for the boys other times like when Isaac wanted a Noah’s ark sitting on the display shelf she had to say no. Lucy was taking an interest and not hiding away which was good she thought, she smiled when people spoke to her yet still did not reply, but Sue knew there was no hurry, she could take as long as she needed to, that was fine with her, her and Jack. Jack was standing at the counter deep in conversation with Wes, Sue could watch Jack forever, as if sensing she was watching him he turned and smiled, winking at her, signing with his hands that they would go soon.

Lucy didn’t miss the signs that Sue and Jack sometimes used, like a secret communication between the two of them but now and then the children used them too. She had gradually come to realise that each sign meant something, just for them. Howie, Wayne and Eleanor didn’t use them neither did Ruth. She wondered if she could communicate like that, it would be helpful for so many times she wanted to say something but words just escaped her, she wished she could talk but she didn’t dare take the risk, the risk of hurt. It was safer in this world of silence she had created and built around herself, and that was just the way it was.

A few weeks later when Jack and Myles were in the yard, Bobby rode in, jumped off, slung the reins of his horse over the railing and approached them.

“Hi” he said

“Morning” said Jack as Myles tipped his hat “What brings you out here?”

“Not seeing him in his new clothes, they fit at least and are practical” said Bobby looking at a better dressed Myles for working on a farm “Mr Pitts”

“What’s up now? Didn’t you sell the horse?”

“No don’t you recognise the one in front of you, no I didn’t”

“What? I don’t understand?”

“Mr Pitts stopped by said I didn’t need sell my horse now but that I maybe should sell him when I fall behind in my repayments again. He said my debt had been paid”

“What?” How?” asked Jack

“That’s what I want to know”

“Randy said that my benefactor was to remain anonymous then made some crack about the Hudson farm, so did you?”

“Did I what?” asked Jack

“Pay my loan, well pay my outstanding loan?”

“No” said Jack “I know you wouldn’t want me to do that. You know that if you wanted the money you only had to ask but I thought your pride wouldn’t let you”

“Well you’d be right my pride won’t let me, what kind of man am I if I can’t provide for my own family?”

“I’m sorry it wasn’t me”

“It’s okay I’m sorry, he was just probably winding me up ‘cause he knows he gets to me and because it makes him feel as if he’s better than everyone else. I just want to know where it came from. I told him that I would pay him back, whoever it was that my anonymous saviour would get his money in full with interest as soon as I could afford it, without selling the horse”

“If that makes you happy then do it” said Jack “Sue’s waving with a coffee pot in her hand, I’ll guess she’ll want to know how Tara and the boys are, Myles and I just have to finish up and then we’ll be in”

^^^^

Jack walked with Myles to the barn and turned and said “It was you wasn’t it? That paid Bobby’s loan?”

“What makes you say that?”

“Oh come on Myles I know that you have the money and maybe even Bobby knew too but didn’t want to ask. Why? Why did you do it?”

“Because he needed it and because I could, it felt good to help him”

“It was a generous and thoughtful thing to do but don’t you think it might have been better to be up front with him and offer him a loan that would have no limit to when he had to repay it or offer to help at the farm or something?”

“I didn’t consider that option I just thought that he needed assistance and I could help and he needn’t know it was me. He's obviously fond of, maybe loves his family and I didn’t want to see him let them down”

“What do you know about love Myles?”

Myles shrugged “I don’t know if I believe in love, or I never thought I believed in love, since I came here it seems to be everywhere, always just out of my reach”

“You wanna know what I think? I don’t think there’s much more to a man’s life than love” said Jack thoughtfully with a sideways glance at Myles

“Are you out of your mind?” Myles asked incredulously

“Don’t get me wrong “ Jack began “There’s different kinds of love. The love a man shares with and has for his wife, the love he has for his children, the love he shows his parents. The love he has for his extended family, his friends who in his heart are very much his family. The love he has for his way of life, his land, his livelihood, his animals, for the beauty of nature. For people he meets and encounters along the way, even his enemies. For the love he has for his creator, his Lord and God. If you don’t have love then how can you understand how it is to be loved and when you have love, everything else follows and falls into place”

“You ever think you were in the wrong profession” Myles asked “I mean you could be a vicar, minister, clergyman with a speech like that”

Jack laughed “No I’m where God intended me to be, but are you where God intended you to be Myles?”

Myles shrugged for that he had no answer at all and Jack left him to think as he walked away and into the house.

Lucy copied the words on the slate and Ruth said “Can you read them Lucy?”

Sue and the kids were watching her intently and Lucy shifted nervously on the bench “Why don’t you write a sentence? Make one up about anything” suggested Sue as an alternative and Lucy used the signs that usually were reserved for use between Jack, Sue and the kids and with a hand signal said “Thank you” and Sue just smiled.

“Let’s see” said Abby and took the slate from Lucy when she had finished

“Can you read it?” Ruth asked Abby

“Sure” the child replied “It says, ‘My name is Lucy, I like to learn to write and read”

“Let me check the spellings” said Sue as Abby passed the slate over, she read it , looked up at Lucy and said “You’re a fast learner much faster than the kids, but I guess that is because you want to learn they think lessons are a chore, you should be pleased, well done”

This time it was Lucy who smiled slightly, Lydia started to fret and Lucy looked over to the crib.

“Go on, give her a hug” said Ruth “I’ve got my hands full helping Sue with this lot” and she indicated the rest of the children and their slates not to mention Isaac who was playing on the floor with his train.

Following nod of approval and encouragement from Sue, Lucy picked the baby up, sitting her on her knee and tried to get her to clap, to which she responded by laughing.

“She likes you” said Sue to Lucy and both woman smiled knowing that a step had been made.

It wasn’t too long before winter was leaving and spring was taking it’s place when the farm had to begin it’s planting. Myles found that everyone even the children seemed to have some task or another and this particular morning were going to help start the vegetable plot with crop that would be ready to eat by the summer. Myles however was expected to help Jack plough a field and Myles was not looking forward to that prospect whatsoever.
^^^^^
It was a fine but crisp morning and the women and children walked out the back of the house with gardening tools and seeds to the vegetable plot, Lucy was surprised by it’s size, it was more than a patch it was huge and the soil had obviously been prepared by Jack, Howie or Wayne a few days before.

Lydia was safely and warmly tucked up in the dog cart in which they had carried their tools and such from the yard. Ruth told everyone their job and soon they all got stuck in with the planting. Sue, Lucy thought didn’t look to good this morning and hadn’t done for the past few weeks, she sat on the sidelines talking to Isaac who was digging at the edge making mud pies before she stood up and walked off the way she had come. No one paid Sue any interest except Lucy, each bent on their task for the day. It wasn’t long before Isaac called for his mother and began to walk off, Lucy concerned not only for Sue but also the little boy followed.

Isaac walked back to the farmhouse despite not being quite three he knew where he was heading, he stopped when he reached the rear yard door and started digging in what could have been a flower bed outside the bedroom window where Lucy was sharing with Alice.

Lucy looked a round for Sue, Levi was here sitting in the sun, so she must be close by as he was never far from her side, a bit like Jack really. The door of the privy opened and Sue came out and sank to the floor looking really pale and Lucy was very worried. The privy was the nearest thing that Lucy had seen to a water closet, not that she was familiar with the term, Myles would have explained to her, that a water closet was a room with a piece of furniture which you sat upon to do your business and then you actually flushed it away. The privy that Sue and Jack had Lucy was familiar with, it had a wooden slatted seat with a bucket beneath and you did what you needed to do and then got out, it wasn’t the best smelling room in a home. It was an even less pleasant job to empty it and Lucy knew that emptying it was Howie’s responsibility.

It was strange how it happened really, one minute Lucy was standing there looking at Sue and the next she bent down gained Sue’s attention and asked “Are you okay?”

Her voice sounded strange even to her own ears and she was thankful that Sue was unable to hear. It sounded rusty like a hinge which hadn’t been opened for years and finally was released, she cleared her throat and spoke again “Sue are you okay?”

Sue who was feeling queasy and now shocked that Lucy had spoken said “I didn’t catch that Lucy say it again”

“I asked if you were okay, you look unwell, do you need the doctor or Jack?” Lucy asked

Sue looked at her for one brief moment more before disappearing back inside the privy and Lucy could only sympathise for her friend. She eventually re-emerged and sat down again by the door.

“Sue?” asked Lucy

“I’m okay, it’s the baby” Sue said

“The baby?”

“I’m pregnant, having a baby”

“Wow you happy about that?”

“Yes I don’t like this bit though” she said with a smile “The last time I felt this sick was……..was…….”

“Was when?” asked Lucy

“When I was expecting Jared. Jared he died when he was younger than Isaac is, he would be six now”

“I’m sorry for your loss” she said sincerely

“It was a long time ago, time heals as you may discover but you never truly forget a bit like Jack too. That is we had a baby called Jack, they’re buried together under a magnolia tree in the church not far from here. In the summer I go and talk to them tell them what’s happening, tell them that Daddy and I love them very much”

“I had no idea” said Lucy shaking her head.

“I never said anything so why should you”

“I have been locked up inside my own problems and hurt for so long that I guess I forgot that other people have hurts the same as me even if they are for different reasons”

“I’m glad you felt you could speak to me today”

“I was worried about you, you scared me, I needed to know you are alright”

“You won’t stop now”

“I won’t stop what?” asked Lucy

“Talking, speaking”

“Um well I feel I mean my voice seems a little odd to me a bit like when you haven’t used something for a long time but I quite like it I think”

“Good” said Sue turning a shade of green again “You know if you want you could take Isaac down to the church for a walk, it’ll be a pretty walk, they won’t miss you at the vegetable plot”

“Well I um……I’ll do that” she answered just before Sue bolted again for the privy.

“Well Isaac do you want to walk with me to the church?”

“See warwee’s” he said

“Warwee’s what’s that?”

“This warwee” said Isaac pointing to a crocus

“Oh you mean flowers, I’m sure we’ll see some flowers”

“Warwee’s” he said nodding and he took Lucy’s hand as they walked off hand in hand down past the orchard.
