Thanks
So how was it?” asked Sue as soon as Lucy stepped over the threshold
“It was….” she said slowly “It was…I have never….he is…..it was…..”
“About what I expected it to be” said Jack following her through the door
He walked into the middle of the room and everyone took a step back “What have you been doing?” asked Lucy looking at him distastefully.
He looked at her then at the remainder of the occupants of the room who all shared a similar expression to Lucy “What?” he asked with shrug
“You stink” said Tom bluntly and to the point
“It’s not that bad” Jack replied with a nervous laugh and sniffed his clothes gingerly
“You can’t smell it because you have been knee deep in it all day” added Sue looking green and then she bolted out the back door.
“Well that’s a first” said Myles “Hudson’s wife turns and flees as the smell is so bad”
“Yeah, Mom’s never done that before” laughed Sam
“Ok-a-a-y” said Jack “I’ll go wash up. Eleanor if you would be so kind as to put some hot water in the tin basin, I will take myself to the bunk house, Sam, run upstairs and get me some clean clothes please, you know where I’ll be” with that head high in the air he turned on his heel and left.

Everyone was sitting down to dinner when he returned.
Ruth went up to him and sniffed “That’s better” she declared and gave him a gentle oush in the direction of his chair as she went to fetch his dinner from the stove.
“Where’s Suie?” he asked
“She hasn’t come back in, actually we thought she might be with you” supplied Lucy
“I haven’t seen her” he replied wolfing down the dinner
“You my boy will get indigestion” Ruth said giving him I know better look and he rolled his eyes as the children sniggered.
“So Lucy” said Jack changing the subject “How was your day, you never did say”
“I don’t honestly know if it is my life’s plan but it’s a learning curve and experience until I find something better” she said slowly thinking as she did so
“That bad huh?” said Jack with a smile “At least he’s paying you even if you have to endure his ugly mug and irritating disposition”
“He is very picky and precise” she added “But I will not let that deter me”
“Good for you, I can honestly say what I know of the man I don’t like” said Myles “Maybe he’d be more suited to Miss Saunders”
“Miss Saunders would eat him for breakfast” said Jack with a smile
“and then spit him out” added Ruth quietly but loud enough for all to hear.

After dinner Ruth said she’d supervise bed time and Jack went to look for Sue, she wasn’t in the privy and she hadn’t snuck up to the bedroom , nor was she in the barn. He took the path through the orchard paying attention to the state and ripeness of his apple crop and ended up at the grave yard. Jack ran a hand through his hair watching Sue lay the two small posies of wild flowers on the equally small graves. He walked towards her slowly making sure he was in her vision should she look up.
“Hi” she said when she saw a pair of boots by her hand, he knelt down and she looked up.
"Are you alright?” he asked sitting down cross legged on the grass
She nodded “I’m fine, fancied a walk”
“You haven’t eaten dinner” he replied
“I know, is there any left?”
“Yeah, you have to eat you know”
“I didn’t feel like it immediately afterwards you know…..”
“Yeah I know, you know Sue….I’m sorry about that”
“It wasn’t just you, some days I feel queasy all day. You smell better now” she said with a smile, a contagious smile that he returned
“Still I’m sorry” he said and moved closer coming close to her side and wrapping his arms about her, she laid her head on his shoulder and he his head upon hers as they sat there in the peace of the cemetery with Jack jr and Jared.
