My Best Friend’s Wedding
She looked beautifully radiant. Blushing cheeks, rosy lips, nice blue suit with a white blouse, a smile that brightened up the whole room. He was dashingly good-looking. Handsome features, clean-cut and shaven, smart tuxedo, neat hair, a tilted smile on his lips. In theory, they would have made a lovely couple. In reality, this was his wedding but he wasn’t getting married to her.
Today’s my best friend’s wedding and he’s getting hitched to a wonderful sheila. Just not the one we had in mind for him. Sitting at a table, I rubbed the little doggie’s head and I noticed he looked so sad. Well, I suppose I could understand. Things have been quite hectic at his place, or rather his owner’s.
“Sue, you okay?” I asked as I see the blonde collapsing down to the chair beside me.
“Yea,” she replied in a weary voice. “Who knew getting two people married was such hard work? I'll be fine, I just need a break.”
One that she badly deserved, I can tell. You see, Sue here is Jack’s other best friend but more importantly, the other sane person who has been by him all these while. The one keeping him grounded and making sure he wasn’t slowly losing his mind. These definitely weren’t in her job description when she joined the FBI 6 years ago.
3 years back, Sue nearly left all of us for New York and Sparky was clearly devastated. When she decided to stay, we were all overjoyed, Jack especially. And we thought for sure, he would go after Sue this time but he didn’t. Sue found him having dinner in a fairly romantic restaurant one night. With Allison Davenport.
I’m not quite sure what happened after that but from what I can put together from Lucy and Tara, Sue cried the entire night and well into the next morning. I don’t remember seeing red, puffy eyes though but Lucy said the best invention women could ever have was cover-up so I guess that was what Sue used to fool everyone.
Jack and Sue stopped doing lunch dates together for Jack was spending more time with Allie and Sue was giving more and more excuses to stay in the office. They still went out for dinner once in a while but always with the gang and Sue would always make sure Lucy was coming along too before agreeing. I think it’s because she didn’t want Jack to send her home.
“Bobby? I think you’re suffocating Levi,” Sue’s voice brought me back down to earth for a while.
“Oh, sorry. Didn’t mean to.” I let go of Levi’s neck and he got up, wagging his tail as he sat down beside Sue, letting her pet his head.
I remembered confronting Jack once. I went to his apartment and gave him a piece of my mind. To my utter surprise, he actually appeared sorry for what he did.
“What were you thinking? You know Sue stayed because of you. Why are you still going out with Allie?” I yelled at him.
“You think I want this? It’s because I can’t have her, that’s why I’m doing this! FBI states no inter-unit dating. I won’t leave this team and neither will she. We can’t be together, ever. I’m with Allie because I don’t want to see the look of pain on her face when I introduced them again. She knows Allie. It won’t be a new woman this time,” He screamed at me. He looked frustrated, pained, his heart was clearly breaking.
But that didn’t stop Jack and Allie from being a couple still. After a year of dating, Jack came to the bullpen with Allie in tow and announced their engagement. And that they were also moving to New York. I watched Sue closely. I was positive I saw a small tear but Sue was already congratulating Allie and shaking hands with Jack. Before I knew it, she was walking to the ladies. Lucy and Tara weren’t in the office that day; Lucy was with her grandma, Tara was sick so I saw it upon myself to go check up on her.
I actually had to pick the lock to get to Sue and when I saw her on the floor, I nearly had an anxiety attack. She wouldn’t have done something stupid right? Thankfully, right. She looked up when she saw my shoes and I sat down with her; letting her cry on my shoulder.
I went to confront Jack again. Good thing Allie wasn’t there or I might have vented my rage on her too. Why? Why? Why did Jack have to do this to Sue?
“I hate you! I hate you! You’re a jerk, you know that?!” I shoved him at his shoulders. “Heck, I understand the marriage but moving to New York? You jolly well know Sue doesn’t approve of the engagement and you still want to push your luck by moving?” I took a vase and threw it to the floor. “I’m your best friend, darn it! I’m supposed to be happy for you now, not picking up the pieces after you!”
“I’m doing all this for her!” Jack shouted as he blocked off my punches. “I can’t keep hurting her anymore. That’s why I’m moving. So she wouldn’t have to see Allie and my having dinner as a married couple. So she wouldn’t have to see Allie and me buying our new house. So she wouldn’t have to see Allie pregnant with our first child. So she wouldn’t have to see Allie and I play with our three kids in our backyard. I can’t give her what she rightfully deserves but I don’t want to inflict pain either!” Jack’s face was already red and I knew maybe it was time to stop screaming at him. Why do these two people do these stupid things upon themselves?
