Tonya and Davey were terrified. Now in the second vehicle, and who knows what these men were doing, or where they were going. They had been tricked into the van by one of the kids from school. He was an older classmate of Tonya's. Once in the vehicle, they were horribly surprised by those inside. A gun was pointed at them, and they wre told to act normal, like this is the way it always is. They didn't dare to do otherwise. They were a little dismayed when they changed vehicles, and they wouldn't allow them to bring their back packs. The man with the white hair said he wanted them to be there so that they would be found. He seemed to be in charge of the whole thing.

Shortly after they had switched vehicles, a young man that they didn'y know took a something out of his ear and said to the older man, "OK, they found the bugs, and they've been destroyed."

The older man nodded and said, "Just as I thought they would. So far, everything has gone according to plan. Good job guys. We have about half an hour until we get there. Make sure our two young friends keep quiet and look natural until we get there."

Sue, Lucy and Tara all looked up when some guys came in with Donna. They all got up and went to her. She began to cry, they all hugged and the three ladies immediatley began to try and comfort her.

"Who did this? What are they going to do with my children. Can we get them back?"

Sue answered, "Of course we will get them back. We'll do everything possible. They'll be fine."

Sue really hoped she was telling the truth.

They all got her to sit down at one of the desks. Lucy offered a drink, and then went to get it. Levi came over and gently laid his head on Donna's lap, whimpering gently as he tried to do his part to console her as well. Donna did seem to calm down at that. She reached down and petted Levi gently.

---------------------------------------------------

Jack arrived with the others and they began to comb the van for every detail. They dusted everything for prints, and checked every corner of the van for clues. After a few minutes, Jack stepped over to D. "Hey, I had the liscence plate checked. It came back as belonging to a Michael Wheeling of a small town in Maryland called Gettyville."

If a colored man could go pale, that was what would have happened to D right then. Jack saw that D recognized the name. "You know him?" he asked.

D reached for something to hold him up before he fell. Myles and Bobby quickly came up behind him and caught him. "Easy, easy." Bobby commented. They led him over to his car, and had him sit down.

"Now, what's going on?" Myles asked. Jack shook his head, unsure of the answer.

D realized that he had not answered, and that he had become short of breath a bit. He tried to get a grip of himself. He responded to them, "Yeah, I know him. Now I know what this is all about."

"I first met Michael Wheeling about twenty years ago. He was working in the bureau at the time, but in a different unit. Well, he had this guy that was hunting him down for some sort of revenge for ruining his plans. You see, he was a serial killer. Michael had figured out what he was doing. You see, the guy would choose a target out of the phone book. Then, instead of killing that target, he did research to find out what kind of relatives he had in the area. Then, he would hunt down the relatives and kill them instead of the target. You see, he wasn't targeting the people for murder as much as he was targeting people for despair, by killing all of their family.

"Well, after Michael figured out what he was doing, he managed to catch up with the guy, and he was able to learn who his target was somehow. He put all of the man's relatives into protective custody. Well, this serial killer got so mad about that, that he contacted Michael and threatened to kill his family instead, thus making him the new target. Because so many people were being brought into protective custody, he asked for help from our unit.

"A couple of senior agents over me and I were responsible for keeping Michael's wife and children in protective custody. Well, his wife had asked for one of us to go and get some milk. They had a baby at the time, and the poor little thing didn't have anything to eat. Well, one of the senior agents asked me to be the one to go get the milk. I did exactly that. When I came back, every single one of them was dead. It appeared that the agents had been killed first, and then the wife and children were all killed execution style."

D stopped for a bit and his eyes started to water and he choked on the next few words. "That...that...murderer even shot the poor defenseless baby."

There was dead silence while D tried to wipe away his tears and regain his composure.

D finally continued. "Michael blamed me for leaving. He blamed me because I couldn't prove that the senior agent had asked me to leave and get the milk. He actually went as far as to accuse me of being in league with the murderer. Nobody ever took Michael seriously. Nobody believed that I would do that. Only Michael believed it.

"Michael eventually quit the bureau. After he left, his unit continued to chase the serial killer. They did eventually catch the guy. But we never heard anything from Michael again. It was almost like he had just disappeared, that is until today.

"Now, he has kidnapped my children, probably with the purpose of killing them to get revenge for what happened there twenty years ago. Look guys, we have to catch this guy. I'm not willing to let him kill my children."

D stood up, ready to get back to work. Jack, Bobby and Myles all agreed that they were with him all the way. "We're going to get him, D!"

Jack whipped out his phone and called Tara. "Tara, we figured out who is behind this. I need all the information you can find on Michael Wheeling. He used be with the bureau back when D was a rookie. He did seem to disappear for a while, so it may be a bit difficult."

Tara responded, "Have you found any challenge yet to difficult for me to figure out?"

"Thanks Tara, I knew I could count on you."

Although D was supposedly ready to go on with the investigation, he obviously was still recovering from the shock of realizing the grave danger his children were in. It was more than just an average kidnapping. D didn't expect to get a ransom request.

Realizing D needed more time, Jack kept giving orders. "Myles, Bobby, continue on to the second library down the road and find out what they know." They both left with a nod. "D, how about you and I do something a little more important, at least it may seem that way at the time. Let's check around here locally to see if anyone saw what happened here. Maybe sombody can tell us if they got into another vehicle, or if they took off on foot or what."

D had his brain cranking a little bit now. "Ok, wait. First, I think I saw some tracks on the other side of the van."

They went around to the other side, so D could show Jack what he meant. Sure enough, there were some tracks of a vehicle. There were a few footprints in the dirt next to the road as well. However, everything was faint and hardly distinguishable enough for a detailed clue. The dirt was well packed in that area. Jack spoke up. "Well, it's not good enough for details, but at least we know that a vehicle left here, probably with the children in it. We better check around and see if anyone saw anything anyway. If anyone can tell us anything, maybe it might be what this vehicle looks like."

D stood up and looked around. Seeing how wooded the area was, he had to be skeptical. "Jack, there's a lot of trees around here. I doubt anyone saw anything. Won't we be wasting our time?"

"D, I know this is hard, but you know as well as I how many times we've looked for leads like this, and we found something valuable. I know it's hard to be patient, but we gotta try."

Jack knew that D was right, but he also knew that D needed a little time to clear his head. Having this kind of work might be frustrating, but it would help D have a chance to recover from the shock. He realized that D was not willing to wait back at the office, so this was his next best choice.

----------------------------------------------

Some time later, as Jack and D were checking out the places where people lived nearby, Jack's phone rang. It was Tara. "Jack, I can't find a whole lot on him. The last thing that I can find was his whereabouts twenty years ago. There's nothing more until this hit on his liscense plate. One consistency I have found though is that the address is the same as the registered address for the e-mail account. Although are both the same, it isn't a real address. However, the e-mail account had a fake name on the registration, but the car has the correct name on the registration. Also, the registration and e-mail addresses are both fairly new."

"I get it. Michael Wheeling new we would check the registration on the e-mail address pretty quickly, so he totally faked it. However, he wanted us to know it was him when we found the car, so he put the real name on it. Why else go through the trouble of coming up with the fake address, but put down the real name. He had it all planned out. But why?"

"I don't know." said Tara.

"Thanks Tara. Do me a favor. I want you to check and see if Michael Wheeling has any living relatives. If he does, we may get a clue from them on his whereabouts."

"Sure Jack."

------------------------------------------

Michael Wheeling pulled his vehicle into the garage attached to the house at their destination. Immediately, Tonya and Davey were bound and gagged. The men pulled them out of the van and took them inside, and then down into the basement. In the basement, the men put them onto wooden chairs and stepped aside. Michael Wheeling came over and crouched down to talk to them.

"Now then. What is this all about? Let me tell you. I know your dad. We go way back. Well, he did something that really hurt me. Now, I'm going to do something that really hurts him. It's unfortunat that you will have to pay the price for it, but that's how it was for my children. Actually, my wife payed the price as well, but it would've been harder to get your mom at the same time we got you guys, so you'll have to pay the price all by yourselves. Well, that's enough for now. I'll talk with you later."

He got up and turned around. The older teenager that Tonya knew walked up to Michael and asked, "Uncle Mike, what are you going to do to them? I agreed to take the lap top for you, but you never told me I'd have to help you do this until this morning. You didn't even give me time to think about what I was doing. I'm not sure I want to be a part of this."

"Look Freddy, I don't care if you are my nephew. If you do anything to mess this up, you're going to be hurting. Now, if you are going to have a hard time living with that, I'll tie you up to until this is all over."

Freddy turned pale. He'd never seen his uncle like this before. "No, no Uncle Mike. Don't do that."

"Don't make me do it then, Freddy!"

Michael left, going up stairs and left the other men with the children. One of the guys pulled over a card table and then pulled out some playing cards. "Hey we might as well have some fun while we wait, right? Freddy, pull over them chairs and let's play some poker."

Freddy glance at the chairs and then over at the children. "I don't have any money." he said when he looked back at the first guy.

"That's all right, I'll loan you a few dollars. Now bring over those chairs."

Freddy was nervous, but he didn't dare to upset the guy, so he pulled over the chairs.

Davey was looking around the room while he had the chance. He had learned a few things from his dad. One of the things he learned was that if you found yourself in a tough situation, being observant may find an answer for you. He took notice of as many things as he could in the room. He saw a door on the far side of the room. He wondered where it went. He also saw boxes, tools, the furnace, the hot water heater... and then he saw something really grabbed his eye. A rifle was hanging on the wall in the far corner.

Jack and D met up with bobby and Myles about 30 minutes later. They just talked together on the side of the road.

"What did you guys find out?" Jack asked.

"Not much." Myles responded. "The head librarian doesn't strike me as being one of the observant types. She did say that a man fitting the description of the driver...you know the gray haired fellow...did come in and ask to use a computer. She did allow him, but he was only there for a few minutes and then he left. Nobody else seemed to notice anything."

D had a question immediately. "You mean he didn't use the lap top?" Bobby and Myles both shook their head. "So what, he just stole the lap top so he could use it for the first message and then leave it behind with a brief message on it? Why?"

Bobby shrugged his shoulders and said, "Well, maybe he wanted to cover his tracks for just a short while. It does seem like he has been hiding some leads on us while leaving others wide open for us to find. I think he had this all well planned out. I think he's trying to intimidate you mate."

D nodded his head. "Yeah, that's right. That's what that serial killer did twenty years ago. He was constantly taunting the target about losing his family members. The only difference is that he streched out communication by days, because he sent letters in the mail. As it turned out, he was putting all the letters in a different corner mail box in D.C. Every time, it was a different one. But he also taunted the team looking for him. He was sending mail to the F.B.I. mail room every time he sent one to the victim. Now, Michael is doing the same thing, but more often and with e-mail. He's also getting the search team and his target at the same time."

"Is there anything else about that case we could use to help with this one?" asked Jack.

"Well, he often spoke like he was actually hunting the family members that he was going to kill. He usually would shoot the victims from a distance. The only time that he deviated from that pattern was when he killed the agents and Michael's family while I was gone."

Myles got very concerned. "D, do you think that it may be possible that Michael could follow the same pattern?"

"Well, I don't know. Michael's not a serial killer that I know of. Of course, something very serious may have changed over the years. So far, however, he seems to be copy catting only certain things that the serial killer did. He's sending messages, but there hasn't really been a sense of him hunting my relatives. At least, not in the messages. It does seem that he did hunt us down before sending any messages though. He had my home well staked out enough to know when the children were most vulnerable. He could see them leave my home from the library down the street where he sent the first message from. He had to know when I arrived at work as well. He sent the message only minutes before I got to the office. I think that we could say that Michael can be expected to do some things the same as the serial killer, but not everything. There are some things he has done that the serial killer never did. The serial killer never kidnapped anyone. He just killed them."

"I see." responded Myles. "So then he's predictable, but yet not predictable. The reason I asked, is because Michael Wheeling lost not only his children but also his wife. I think we should consider the possibility that he may go after Donna as well."

Jack agreed quickly. "D, Myles is right. Where is Donna?"

"I sent her down to the bureau with one of the search team members. I figured she would be safe there."

Myles spoke up. "Yes, but this man has been a part of the bureau before. He knows how we do things. He's also been in the building recently. How else would he have bugged our phones?"

"You're right. We've got to get back there! Let's go!"

They all got in their cars and sped off back to the Hoover building. On the way, D called Donna on her cell phone. "Donna, where are you?"

"I'm here at the office like you wanted me to be."

"Who's with you?"

"Well, Sue, and Lucy and Tara are here."

"OK, don't go anywhere. You may be in danger. Put Tara on the phone."

"D you're doing it again. What's going on?"

"This time, Honey, I'm not sure really. Please just give me Tara."

Moments later, Tara was on the phone. "Tara, you're the only one in the room with a gun?"

"Uh, yeah, I am."

"This may sound strange, but I want you to be very cautious. Don't leave anybody alone with Donna, especially if someone comes around that you've never seen before."

"Um, OK."

"Look Tara, do you have a recent photo of Michael Wheeling anywhere in the information you found?"

"Uh, yeah, I have the picture from his driver's liscense."

"Good, print it out, and make posters. Especially make sure that Donna, Sue and Lucy see the picture. If you guys see Michael Wheeling, make absolute sure that he doesn't get to Donna."

"Do you think that he may be coming here?"

"We're not sure, but we don't want to take any chances."

"OK. I'm on it."

"Tara, we're on our way there. When we get there, one of us is going to be staying there with you to make sure all goes well."

"What, you don't think we ladies can take care of ourselves?"

"Twenty years ago, two agents were killed by the serial killer we were looking for. I'm not going to let Michael Wheeling copy cat that."

"OK."

-------------------------------------------

Michael Wheeling stepped into another library. Once again, he noted that his plan was working perfectly. It was unbelievable how smooth everything was going. He easily gained access to another computer. He logged on to the net, and went to his e-mail account. Once again, he typed in D's e-mail address, and sent him a message. It asked, "Do you want your children back?"

D, Jack, Bobby and Myles all clamored into the bullpen. They were relieved to see that Donna was still fine. D went right over to her and they embraced, tears streaming down their cheeks. When they finally released from their embrace, D looked Donna in the eye with a look of pain. "Donna, I hate to do this, but I have to."

"What?"

"I'm going to have to send you away. This guy, Michael Wheeling...Well, he used to be in the bureau, so he knows how we do things. He's also been in the building recently. He had all of our phones bugged. He may come after you, so you'll have to disappear for a little while."

Donna couldn't believe what she was hearing. "NNNNOOOO! I will not go anywhere. You're going to find our children, and I want to be here when that happens!"

"Donna, this guy probably plans to kill our children like his were killed, and he probably plans to come after you and kill you too, just like his wife was killed. I won't let him do that!"

Jack stepped in. "Donna, we're going to find the children." He hoped again that he was telling the truth. He turned and looked at D. "Maybe we should talk about this."

Tara spoke up. "It might be a good idea for you guys to do that, but I have something you should see first." Jack, D, and Donna all stood and looked at her. The interruption had been quite sudden. "Well, are you going to come and look at it, or what?"

Everybody gathered around Tara's desk. D came around and looked at the screen. There was Michael's most recent message, "Do you want your children back?" D's face showed a look of pure anger. He gently pushed Tara aside and grabbed the keyboard. He clicked on respond and typed in, "Of course I do you *******! The question is, What do YOU want?" He quickly clicked on send.

"I hope he responds to that soon."

"What was it?" Jack asked.

"Michael asked me if I wanted my children back. I told him that of course I did, and the real question is what he wants."

"That's not all you said." quipped Tara.

"Huh?"

"That wasn't a very nice name you called him."

"Just wait until I tell you what I wanted to call him!"

Jack spoke up. "You know D, that probably was not a very good idea, calling him a name like that. You may enfuriate him, and then who knows what he'll do."

"Well I'm not going to apologize to him! He has my children!"

Everybody was quiet. Jack realized that it was a useless argument, and moved on. "Tara, did you find anything on his living relatives?"

Tara was taken a little by surprise. "Huh? Oh! Yeah!"

Tara got her keyboard back and began typing quickly. "If you all will take a look at the screen on the wall here, I have some pictures for you. The first one, is the most hated, Michael Wheeling." Three pictures appeared on the screen and everyone got a good look at Michael Wheeling for the first time.

"The second one is Michael's brother, Daniel Wheeling. Daniel has also lost his wife. She was killed a few years ago in a home invasion." Daniel looked a bit like Michael, but with a rounder face and a more narrow nose. "Daniel lives in a small town near the second library Michael used for sending a message, called Hermville.

"And, the last one is Daniel's son, Fredrick Wheeling." Fredrick looked only a little like his dad. Tara's best guess was that he looked more like his mom had. "I was able to get a picture of Fredrick because he just got his driver's liscense recently. However, Fredrick's address is not the same as his father's. He has been living with Daniel's ex-wife."

"Ex-wife?" asked Myles. "I thought you said that his wife was killed in a home invasion."

"Oh! Sorry. After his wife's death, he married another woman, a Brandy McPherson. Just months after they married, they divorced. The only thing I didn't find in the public record is why they divorced."

"I don't suppose you found the reason that Fredrick stayed with her instead of going with his father."

"No, I didn't find that either. But I do know exactly where they have been living. D, they live just down the street from you, almost kitty corner to the library."

D looked shocked. Jack's eyes lit up. Jack began to search his pockets. "If that's so, then Fredrick must attend the same school with your children. Where's that absentee sheet? Ah, here it is." He scanned the sheet real quickly. "Aha! Here he is right here. Well, we know he's not in school. Let's find out where he is. Bobby, Sue, you two go to Fredrick's house and talk to his mom, or whatever he calls her. Find out what she knows. Myles, call the school and find out if Fredrick had access to that computer lab. I bet he's the one who stole the lap top." Then, Jack turned to D. "D, let's talk about Donna."

Everybody moved. Sue and Bobby walked out the door. Myles started dialing his phone. Jack and D stepped aside away from Donna. Before anyone got too terrible far, Tara spoke up. "D, you wanted him to respond quickly, and you got your wish." Jack, D, and Donna all stepped closer. Tara seemed to turn pale as she read the message. She looked over to D. "I don't think you should look at it."

"What? Why?"

Jack came around and read it over Tara's shoulder. He also turned a little pale as he read, "What I want is for you to sweat a little before I kill your children."

"Oh...my!" Jack seemed at a lack for words.

D came around the desk and looked even though he knew Tara advised against it. When he saw what it said on the screen, D flipped. "What?! NO!! I knew it!" He turned and looked at Donna. "He's gonna kill them!"

"NNNOOOO!!" screamed Donna.

D couldn't hold his anger in any longer. He grabbed Tara's garbage can and threw it. Then he went after it and stomped on it. He realized that the water cooler was right there, and he pushed it over. Jack run over and grabbed his arm. "D! D! Calm down!"

D turned on him. "Calm down!? Calm down!? He's gonna kill my kids and you say 'Calm down!?' No I won't calm down! I'm not gonna calm down until he's in hand cuffs and sitting in a prison cell wondering where he went wrong! Until then, I WILL NOT CALM DOWN!"

Jack just stood and let the silence fill the room for a bit. After a few seconds he asked, "Are you done? Feel better?" D just looke at him. "Good, because the longer you rant and rave and tear the place apart, the more time Wheeling has to just go ahead with his plan! Now, get a hold of yourself!"

D continued to stare, and he realized how he had been talking to the man who was more than just his friend. He was also his boss. He looked down at the floor for about half a second, and then looked back into D's eye's. "Hey, sorry. I guess a little bit of anger expression is in order after all."

D sighed, and he looked quickly to Donna, ane then over to Lucy and Tara. All of them were staring. "Alright , look Jack. You're right. Let's figure out what we're doing and get him."

"All right." Jack then looked over to Tara. "Tara, we need to know where those two messages came from, ASAP."

"Right!" said Tara. "I'm on it!'

Then Jack looked back to D. "About Donna. We need to keep in mind that Wheeling knows how we do things. He probably knows that if we percieve any danger toward Donna, we'd make her disappear. He's probably thought to try and figure out some way to know where she will be. We need to figure out some way to make her invisible without doing it the way we usually would. We need to be creative."

"What do you have in mind?"

"I think we should have Myles take her somewhere neutral. Not a hotel room, and not some big trip out of state. He'd think of both of those. He'd also think of all our homes as well."

"What does that leave us?"

"I'm still trying to figure that out."

Lucy stepped closer and cleared her throat. D, Jack, and Donna all looked at her. "I hate to interrupt, but what about a church? He wouldn't think of that would he?"

"Hey!" Jack exclaimed. "That could work."

Myles stepped over after hanging up his phone. He had done that once already, thinking that there may be a serious altercation in the room. When things had calmed down, he simply pushed redial and picked up where he left off. Now, he had the information he needed.

"Ok!" he said. "Our little friend Fredrick, or Freddie as most people call him, is actually really close to the teacher in the computer lab. That's one of the reasons that the teacher never suspected him. 'It's just not like him to do that' he says. However, Freddie not only is in the lab everyday, but he also has the approval to work on and repair all of the computers in the lab. Apparently, he is a pretty good computer wiz."

D spoke up. "I bet that kid showed his uncle how to do everything with that lap top. Somehow, I doubt Michael knew how to do all that on his own."

Jack looked to Myles. "We have another job for you Myles."

"What's that?"

"We want you to take Donna somewhere and keep her safe. The only people that are going to know where you take her is me and D."

"Where am I taking her?"

"Do you feel like going to church, Myles?"

--------------------------------------------

Sue and Bobby knocked on the woman's door, and waited for the answer. Jack had called them on the way there and let them know what Myles had found out. Now, they hoped to be able to fill in the rest of the puzzle.

A middle aged woman with blond hair finally answered the door. "Hello?"

"Hi. I'm bobby Manning and this is Sue Thomas." He showed his badge. "We're with the FBI. We'd like to ask you a few questions."

"Is this about those kids that came up missing from the school?"

"Well kind of. Do you mind if we come in?"

"Sure."

She opened the door and seemed a little surprised when Levi came in as well. "Who's this?" she asked.

Sue turned and smiled. "Oh this is Levi. He's my seeing eye dog. I'm deaf."

"I didn't know deaf people could talk."

"Well, some do."

"How do you know what I'm saying?"

"I read lips. Levi is my ears for me. But actually, we didn't come here to talk about me and Levi. We're actually here to talk about Freddie."

"Freddie? But he's not missing is he?"

Sue and Bobby looked at each other. Suddenly they both thought that they weren't going to find Freddie here. "Well," said Bobby, "we were actually hoping that you knew where Freddie is. He's not at school, so we thought maybe he was home, sick or something. Maybe a doctor's appointment."

The woman began to look worried. "No, none of that. He's really not at school? He left here to go to school this morning."

Bobby pulled a sheet of paper out of his jacket pocket. "Well, his name is on the list of absent students here." He showed her. "That means that he never showed up for homeroom."

"Oh my gosh!" She looked up at them aghast. "I don't know where he is. You don't think he was kidnapped too do you?"

"Well, we don't know what to think exactly. However, we do know who the person is that kidnapped the Gans children."

"Who?"

"Freddie's uncle, Michael Wheeling."

The woman gasped, and fell down into a chair holding her hands over her mouth. "What is it?" Sue asked.

The woman struggled for a few moments to get a sound out of her mouth. "Um, Freddie's Uncle? Freddie's been going over to his dad's house on the weekends. A couple of months ago, Freddie said that some long lost uncle of his suddenly showed up at his dad's house while he was there. Well, his uncle got talking to him, and he seemed to show some wierd kind of interest in some classmate of his. Freddie was really freaked out about it. Ever since, Freddie has been real apprehensive about going to his dad's house on the weekends, but he has to according to the court order."

"Did he say what it was about the classmate of his that really interested his uncle?" asked Sue.

"No, he never really told me a lot about it. Most of the time, he just said that he didn't like his uncle, but he knew his uncle would be there. He really didn't know what to do about him."

Bobby asked, "Do you think that Freddie may have gone to his dad's house being that it's not the weekend, and his uncle may not be there?"

She shook her head. "No, it's not like him. He really enjoys school. He likes it more than anything. He wouldn't miss it if he didn't have to."

Bobby spoke up with yet another question. "I know this may sound insignificant, but have you seen Freddie with a lap top computer from school in the last few months?"

She nodded her head. "Um, yeah. He brought one home one Friday evening and took it with him to his dad's the next day." She stopped talking and got a peculiar look on her face, and then continued. "Actually, I don't think he ever brought it back."

"That's OK, we already have it for him. We'll return it in due time."

"You have it? How do you have it?"

"We found it. Look, we don't have any idea where Freddie may be. Are you sure you don't have a clue where he may be?"

"No, I don't know for sure, but if his uncle kidnapped these other kids, maybe he kidnapped Freddie too. You have to find him."

"Well, we'll do our best. We'll let you know what we find out."

-------------------------------------------------------

Jack and D realized that they wouldn't find Michael Wheeling at the library. Obviously, he had plenty of time to leave. In light of that, the library was the second place they planned to go. They decided to check out Daniel Wheeling's home first. Maybe they would find a good clue there. Besides, Daniel's home was actually kind of on the way to the library.

On the way there, Bobby called and shared what they had found. "Ok, we'll see if he's there. You better start heading this way in case we need backup." D said, and closed his phone.

"What's up?" asked Jack.

The step mother doesn't know where Freddie is, but Bobby thinks that it's possible that Freddie is at his dad's house. Michael Wheeling has had contact with Freddie at his dad's house. It's also possible that Michael could be there."

"I guess we'll find out. Here we are."

Jack and D approached the door and knocked. A woman answered. "Hello."

"Hi, I'm jack Hudson and this is Demetrius Gans." They both showed their badges. "We're with the FBI. Is Daniel Wheeling here?"

"No. He said that he was going to take his son out to his brother's summer home for some quality time. Not that the man knows how to do quality time. It's a wonder I've stayed with him."

"Where's the summer home?"

"It's over by Deer Lake."

"Do you have an address?"

"Hold on, let me get it."

--------------------------------------------------

Tara's phone rang. "Hello."

"Tara, it's Jack. We may have found out where they are, but we don't know yet. Michael and Daniel and Freddie are supposedly having quality time over by Deer Lake. I want you to get a hold of Bobby and a S.W.A.T. team, and send them to this address."

Tara took it down, and made the calls.

--------------------------------------------------

Jack and D were looking at the house through their binoculars. It was amazing how they may have found the kids so quickly. They saw another light blue van sitting in the driveway. There were also a few small cars there as well. The back of the house was right on a ridge that went out in both directions from the back of the house. Beyond the ridge, there was a sparsely wooded area, with thicker woods around and behind.

"Do you think they're in there?" asked D.

"It's a pretty good possibility." answered Jack.

"We're talking about how many men? Maybe we can take them ourselves."

"Don't be a fool D. Backup is coming."

--------------------------------------------

Michael Wheeling noticed the car off in the distance. He swore under his breath. Something had gone wrong. They weren't supposed to have found him yet. He had to enact his plan early. He picked up his rifle and headed down into the basement where the children where, and the others were still playing cards.

"Get up guys. I want you to untie the kids."

"Already?"

"Yeah. They're already on to us. We can't wait any longer. As soon as you've got them untied, go get Daniel out of the beadroom and get out of here. Oh, and when you get Daniel, you tell him to execute the next part of the plan without being such a lazy man."

"Alright."

The two men got up and went to untie the children. Freddie on the other hand noticed the rifle. "What are you going to do with that?"

"None of your business. You know what, why don't you be the one to go wake up your dad. Don't bother telling him the lazy part though. You're just like him."

Freddie just stood for a bit, staring at the rifle. Michael got impatient. "Get moving!"

Freddie, startled, went running up the stairs.

The other two men brought Davey and Tonya to stand right in front of Michael, and then promptly went up the stairs also. That left Michael, sporting his rifle in front of Davey and Tonya.

"See this?" he asked them. They both nodded cautiously, terrified of what may happen next. "This is the weapon that will take your lives. But I'm not going to do it right here." Then he pointed over to the door that Davey had noticed earlier. "You kids get to go out that door and run. You won't get far though. There's a certain area that I have fenced in. You won't be able to get out of it. I will be coming after you. I will hunt you down like animals, and I will kill you one by one."

The kids were shaking now. They weren't sure what to do.

"Well?" Michael asked. "What are you waitng for? I'll give you a head start. RUN!"

Davey and Tonya ran to the door, opened it and ran out as quickly as they could. If this creep was going to give them a head start, they were going to take advantage of it. The went running between trees and through tall grassy areas. Davey kept looking back to see if he was coming yet. He didn't dare to stop. They just kept running. Davey tripped and fell one of the times that he looked back. Tonya ran back and helped him up. "Come on!" she said. They kept running all the way to the fence in the back of the acreage. There, they stopped, and looked around breathing hard.

After a while, Tonya asked, "What are we going to do now. This fence is too high to go over. Maybe we can dig under it."

Davey looked and shook his head. "Are you kidding. He'll get here and kill us first. Our best bet is to split up and make him choose which one of us to chase."

Before he could explain further, Tonya interrupted. "No! Don't you remember what Dad taught us? We're always going to be safer if we stick together."

"Tonya, Dad was talking about walking to school. He wasn't talking about being chased by a mad man who wants to kill us. If we stay together, he'll find us together, and he'll kill us together. If we slpit up, maybe one of us has a chance to survive."

"No Davey. We're sticking together, and that's that. Even if you do insist on splitting up, I'll turn around and follow you."

Davey was angry. He knew that he was the younger of the two, but just because she was older didn't mean she was smarter. He knew his plan would work, but you can't split up if the other person is just going to follow you around. "All right. We'll stay together, but if you're going to be following me around, you're also going to follow my plan."

"You're plan. You have a plan?"

"Yeah. Listen. I noticed a rifle back there hanging in the corner of that basement. If we circle around the long way along the fence and back to the house, he should be out here following our trail when we get back to the house. We'll go back in, and then I'll get that rifle down, load it, and I'll come back out here and shoot him before he shoots us."

"Do you even know how to shoot a gun?"

"Well, not exactly. But I have friends at school who have talked to me about it, and I've read some books. I should be able to figure it out."

"How do you even know the gun's still there? Maybe he's using it to hunt us right now."

"No. I know it's still there because it was still hanging there when we ran out. The rifle he was showing us was a different one that he brought from upstairs."

"I don't know Davey. I don't like it."

"Well, do you have a better plan?"

She shook her head. "Do you have a plan at all?" Once again, she shook her head. "All right then. Let's go and get to it before he finds us."

------------------------------------------------

Bobby and Sue joined D and Jack pretty quickly. They had wasted no time in getting to the destination. Jack briefed them quickly as to what they had found so far. Right as they finished talking, D called them over. "Look." he said as he handed the binoculars to Jack. Jack looked in and saw that three man and a teenager came out of the building. One was older looking with a pot belly. There were also two younger looking like they were in their late twenties or early thirties.

"Yeah, that looks like them, except the older man is not Michael, but his brother Daniel. The teenager must be Freddie. No sign of Michael or the children. They must still be inside. They're all getting into that van." After about thirty seconds, Jack announced, "They're heading this way. We've got to stop them." He pulled away the binoculars and turned to Bobby. "You go down the road a bit, and we'll let them go by. Be sure to block the road way, and then we'll come up behind and trap them in."

"Got it mate. Come on Sue, Levi."

-----------------------------------------------

Daniel was driving along minding to where he was going when he came around the bend in the road only to find a car blocking the road. Bobby and Sue were standing there outside the car, but behind it so as to use it for cover if they had to. Bobby had his gun out, and he pointed it at them. "FBI! Get out of the car and put your hands on your heads."

"Shoot!" Daniel said in a quiet voice. He cursed under his breath and turned around to see if he could back up and make a break for it. All he saw was Jack and D pulling up behind them, getting out, and making the same demand. He cursed again, but this time not in such a quiet voice. "Come on guys. We don't have any choice. We have to give up. If we try to run for it, they'll just shoot us."

Everyone in the van got out slowly and put their hands on their heads like they were told. Jack, D, and Bobby all ran in and cuffed them. Nobobdy struggled or gave them a hard time. Jack and D made them sit down on the side of the road while Bobby searched the van with Sue.

D and Jack were interrogating the guys. "Where are my children?" asked D. No answer. "Where is Michael?" Still no answer.

Jack's turn. "You know guys, you really don't have much to lose here. We have enough on you guys to put you away for kidnapping or accessory to kidnapping. That will keep you behind bars for a while. However, if you tell us what we need to know, we may be able to make a deal for you."

At first there was no answer. After a few seconds, Freddie asked, "What kind of deal?"

One of the younger adults turned to him and shouted, "Shut up Freddie. They're not going to make a deal for you. They just want to ruin Michael's plans for revenge."

D stepped over to Freddie and helped him up. He walked over to his car with Freddie. When they got there, he said, "Don't listen to them Freddie. We can get you the best deal of all. You're a minor, which means we may be able to have you tried as a minor instead of as an adult. That would give you much less severe consequences. All you have to do is tell me what I need to know, and we'll do our best with the DA."

"OK."

"Do you know where my children are?"

"Well, the last time I saw them, they were down in the basement. Michael told us all to leave and execute the rest of the plan. We were supposed to find your wife I think. Anyway, he had a gun. I think he was going to kill them."

-------------------------------------------------

Sue did her best to make it look like she was searching the van. What she was actually doing was watching the men sitting by the road. Jack was doing his best to watch them but look away from time to time. He had worked with Sue enough to know that sometimes, you had to create a chance for Sue to read lips. He knew she was watching. He hoped that if he seemed uncautious enough, then one or more of the guys would start whispering. Even though he might not be able to make out what they were saying, Sue was the best lip reader on the planet. Daniel fell for it. He leaned over and whispered to one of the guys. It was just two sentences, but that was all Sue needed.

Sue very slowly went over to D as he was talking with Freddie. "D. Can I talk to you."

D had freddie go back over with the other guys and turned to Sue. "D, I saw one of the men whisper to the other. He said, 'Don't worry, the kid doesn't know much. There's no way he knows that Michael is hunting them out back."

Just then, the S.W.A.T team pulled up. "Perfect timing." commented D. While some of the S.W.A.T. team loaded the men into an armored transport vehicle they had brought along, Jack, D, and Bobby geared up with their microphones and ear pieces, tested them with Tara, and then began the plan for going in.

---------------------------------------------------

Before going after the children, Michael had put on a bullet proof vest. If he had been found so quickly, he knew that he couldn't take any chances. However, he was not willing to just shoot the children. They had to be hunted like the victim's from twenty years ago. Nothing else would be justice for his sorrow. He knew that he had some time however. He had only spotted one government car. He knew they would wait for backup. He should have enough time for this.

After donning his bullet proof vest, he went out and slowly began the process of tracking the children. The further he went in after them, the more trees there were. He was actually just a little surprised by their track though. They went straight back to the fence without wavering to one side or the other. After that, they had gone to the left right along the fence. He began to follow.

---------------------------------------------------

Davey and Tonya made it back to the house. The crazy wacko had just left the door unlocked, so they went right in. Davey went straight to that rifle on the wall. He brought a chair over and stood on it so he could get it down. As he grabbed it off of the rack, he noticed that the ammo was tucked in the back of the bottom shelf. He grabbed it also, and began loading the gun. It worked just like his friends and the books had said.

Tonya watched and was amazed at how well her brother seemed to be doing. Maybe he really did know what he was doing.

Once he had it loaded, he looked at Tonya and said, "Stay here."

"We've already been over this." she responded. "We are staying together."

"You know, you may be older, but sometimes you're just plain stupid. What if he shoots back? You may be killed."

"Yeah, well he might shoot you too. I mean, what if you miss?"

"That's a chance that we're going to have to take if we want to live. What's our other choice? Wait here for him to find us, right. I'm not doing that. I'm going to kill him before he kills us."

'All right." Tonya agreed reluctantly. She liked the plan less and less the more they went on. "But we're still staying together."

Davey shook his head. Sisters anyway.

Tonya reached out and grabbed Davey's arm. "Are you as scared as I am?"

Davey looked back. "Boys don't get scared."

"Stop it Davey! You can't fool me with that macho act. I'm your sister. I can see right through it."

Davey looked as terrified as he felt. "Yeah I'm scared. I'm so scared, I might pee my pants. But I can't let that stop me." She just looked at him. "Come on. If you're coming with me, we gotta get going, or he'll find us first."

----------------------------------------------------

Bobby snuck around the one side of the building, careful to stay low below the windows. They didn't think anyone was inside, but there was no sense in taking a chance. When he got to the back of the house, he carefully looked over the brick wall that had been built on the ridge at the back of the house. He saw plenty of trees and brush. No people. He took out his mirror from his pocket, and looked around the side of the house that he couldn't see. He noticed a door coming out from the basement, and a path going out into the woods. He spoke into the microphone quietly. "I see a door coming out from the basement. That's probably how they got out into the back. I don't see anyone back there, but there is a path that leads out into the woods. If anyone is back there, they are all out in the woods."

"OK." responded Jack. "How far down is it from the top of the wall?"

"It's a long way. We definitely won't be able to go over it without making ourselves vulnerable. Our best bet is probably to go in and exit through the basement door."

"Ok, come on back. We'll all go in together."

----------------------------------------------

Davey and Tonya slowly went out the door again. They knew that the crazy man would come from their left, because that was the way that they had come. Davey noticed a pile of firewood to the right. He started toward that pile to hide behind it, and Tonya followed. Before he got there, he heard a twig snap. He looked and saw that the crazy man was coming. He didn't see them yet though. He was busy looking down at their tracks. Davey lifted up the rifle and began to aim, but the crazy man walked behind trees and bushes. He couldn't get a clean shot. He continued to watch, hoping for that chance. Tonya on the other hand, tried to hide behind her brother. That was hard to do since she was taller then him, but she didn't want to draw attention to them by running or breaking a twig of her own. She just tried to keep out of site behind her brother.

------------------------------------------------

The team broke the front door in and began sweeping the place, looking for any sign of anyone in the house. "Clear!" one person shouted from a side room. This continued until it was time to check down in the basement. Just as they were about to go down, they heard a gun shot out back. D ran for a window and looked out. He saw Davey standing with a rifle and Tonya right behind him, trying to hide.

-------------------------------------------------

Davey was terrified. He'd missed. The crazy man was now beginning to take aim at them. Tonya screamed. "Davey! Tonya! Get down!" It was their dad yelling from the window.

--------------------------------------------------

Michael had almost felt the wind of the bullet as it went zooming past his head and into the tree behind him. He had an easy shot at the kids though. He thought that if he shot just right, he could get them both in one shot, because the girl was standing right on the other side of the boy. He took aim. They looked away as someone shouted to them. It sounded like Demetrius Gans. But Gans was too late. He had them in his cross hairs and his finger was on the trigger.

D heard the gunshot as his children ducked and fell to the ground. He looked for the location where the shot came from, and pushed the flimsy screen out of the window all in one motion. He saw Wheeling preparing for another shot, apparently cursing the fact that the kids ducked just in time for him to miss. D just pointed and shot. The bullet hit Wheeling in the hand and he yelled out in pain. This time, D took better aim. He shot and hit him right in the chest. Wheeling dropped to the ground. He turned to the team and barked, "Get down there! I got him!"

Everybody hustled down the stairs into the basement and out the door. D was right behind them. Everyone was looking around to see where Wheeling was when D got through. He pointed and said, "He's over there." Everyone ran in that direction, Jack and Bobby in the lead. D went over to the children. They ran to him and clung to him. He rushed them inside and away from the danger. "Are you guys OK?"

Tonya responded. "We'll be OK, I think."

"Are you physically harmed? Did the bullet get you at all?"

"No."

"Did he hurt you in any other way?"

"They did tie our hands kind of tight."

"Let me see."

They showed him. "Only minor brush burns, but they still hurt like the dickens," he thought.

"Tara, they seem to be OK, but get an ambulance here to check them out anyway, just to be safe."

He heard Tara respond in his ear. "They're already on the way."

-------------------------------------------------

Wheeling knew that he had nowhere to go, and no other option than to give up. He considered killing himself, but then he realized that he wouldn't ever have another chance at revenge that way. When the agents came, he already had the gun at his feet, and his hands in the air, blood dripping from his wounded hand. "I surrender!" he announced, while wincing from the pain of the bullet that hit his vest right in the chest.

Jack and bobby came over and cuffed him. Bobby began to read him his rights, and Jack announced into his microphone, "We got him! All clear."

------------------------------------------------

Later on, Jack and Sue watched as Wheeling was being escorted to the armored transport. D was there waiting for him. Wheeling leaned over toward D. "This isn't over Gans. I'll come for you again."

"I don't think so Michael. Your going in with two charges of kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child, as well as two counts of attempted murder of a minor. I don't need to tell you how long that means you'll be put away. You know how it works."

"No Gans, it won't be like that. I promise you, I'll be back for you. I won't let this go without justice."

"We got the best justice for you that we could twenty years ago."

"No you didn't. You guys never caught the accomplice. You're still on this side of the prison bars Gans."

"You know as well as I do that I had nothing to do with the death of your children. I was just following orders."

Wheeling was about to go on, but D gestured with a tip of his head, and they put him into the transport.

As D walked over to the ambulance to be with his children, Sue commented to Jack, "I feel so sad for him. This has probably been the hardest day of his life."

Jack nodded his head and looked at her. "It's been a hard day for us all. I can't really imagine what it would be like to be in his shoes though. But I can say this. It's always a sad day when we have to put away one of our own, because he attacked the family of our own. This has indeed been a sad day for the bureau."

Right then, Myles pulled up with Donna. D saw them and ran over. As Donna got out of the car, D met her and led her over to the ambulance where the children were. There were many hugs and kisses and tears.

-------------------------------------------------

That night, Davey and Tonya had some trouble getting to sleep. So did D and Donna. D and Donna found themselves peeking in their children's bedroom doors, just to make sure they were OK. Then, they would go and sit in the living room and return to the bed room doors later.

About the fifth time they sat in the living room, D looked at Donna, worried look on his face. "Donna..."

"Yes Dear."

D struggled for words a bit. "I think I'm going to quit the bureau."

"What?"

"This is the second time in the last few years that someone from my past has come back to get me. Except this time, it almost meant that we lost our kids."

"D, do you remember what I said then?"

"I do, but still...I mean..." He paused considerably. "He almost got them, Donna." Tears began to stream down D's face. "That bullet just missed them. If they had taken even one more moment before they ducked, he may have killed them."

Donna moved over on the couch and they hugged, holding each other. After a few minutes, they heard the pad of bare feet coming toward them. They looked, trying to hide their tears. It was Davey. Davey was crying too.

Donna got up and came around to him. She held him close. He didn't accept it though. He gently pushed her away and stepped toward his father. "Dad, you can't quit. Don't you see. This guy probably would have come after us anyway, whether you were working for the FBI or not. And if it wasn't for you being in the FBI, and if it wasn't for what you taught us, he would've really killed us. Dad, you can't quit. I won't let you. You came and saved us."

D got up and came around this time. He held Davey. This time, Davey accepted. Donna leaned in too, and this time he didn't push her away. Davey sobbed. Tears streamed down D's and Donna's faces as well. Amongst the sobs, Davey said, 'I want to be just like you Dad. You can't quit. You can't quit!"

Davey pushed them away enough to be able to look in his dad's face. "Promise me you won't quit Dad! Promise me!"

D didn't have to think about it any more. "Ok Davey. I promise."

He pulled Davey back in for a hug. "I want to be just like you Dad."

Donna heard more footsteps coming their way. She saw Tonya coming over with tears in her eyes as well. Donna gently pulled her into the group, and they all hugged.

Excellent ending, C.H. Davey gave D the best reason not to quit. I have to tell you, I could only agree with D when he told Donna he wanted to quit. But Davey made sense... The team was on its toes (so to speak) because it was one of their own. Very emotional ending too...sniff sniff...
