Chapter 16:

"What's this about, sir?" D asked the director, concerned.

"Scuttlebutt around the office is that Hudson and Thomas are dating" the director stated. "Is this true, Hudson, Thomas?"

"Ummm...ummm..." Sue looked at Jack nervously, fearful of what was about to occur.

"Yes, sir, it is true!" Jack said boldly. "I'm not quite sure how word spread so quickly! It just happened three days ago, on Friday, after work!"

"It must have been Lucy! Nobody else could have managed to notify most of the Hoover building in only an hour's time!" Jack thought to himself.

"So, you're not denying it?" the director asked Jack.

"No, sir, I'm very happily admitting it!" Jack said, taking Sue's hand in his own, trying to calm her. "Everything will be okay!" he mouthed at her, then gave her a wink.

The director looked at D, who had a huge grin on his face looking at Jack and Sue. "Did you know about this, Gans?" he asked.

"Actually, no sir, I wasn't yet aware of it!" D said truthfully.

"But you're obviously very happy about it?" the director asked.

"Yes sir, I am!" D exclaimed. "I can honestly say I was rooting for them! I've never before seen two people that belonged together more than these two!"

"You are all aware that the bureau has had a no-dating within units policy for quite some time, aren't you?" the director asked.

"Yes, sir..." they all three said in unison.

"So, you just decided to totally disregard the rules?" the director asked.

"With all due respect, sir, it took us both three years to finally admit that we love each other. We're not going to let some stupid, archaic rule keep us apart any longer!" Jack said.

"Besides we've worked well as a team for over three years, while having these feelings for one another, why should the fact that we're now actually officially dating change anything?" he continued.

"Well, I'm sorry, Hudson, but rules are rules! As the rule currently reads, if you insist on continuing to date, I'm afraid one of you will have to be transferred! Now which one of you is going to transfer? Or do I have to make the decision for you?" the director asked sternly.

Sadly, my pet rat Theodora passed away, but she did so love a nice little amble around the park. And she used to ride in my shirt pocket and poke her nose out at the most inconvenient times -- like when I was in a grocery store or beside some ratophobic person. It got so she didn't mind the screaming at all. Now -- how are Jack and Sue going to get through this mess here?

Chapter 17:

"No, sir, you don't have to make the decision for us! Sir, if someone has to transfer, it should be me!" Sue said. "It's Jack's team, he's been here longer...I should be the one to go" she continued.

"Any where in particular you would like to transfer? Would you still consider the job in New York? I talked to Hackford just last week, and they still haven't filled the position. He'd still love to have you join his team!" the director finished.

Sue looked at Jack, his brow furrowed, and then back at the director.
"Well, sir, I'd prefer to stay here in D.C., but if that's my only option, then I guess I'd have to say..." Sue was interrupted by Jack.

"No, sir, she WILL NOT be going to New York! Or if she does, I WILL be going with her!" Jack said forcefully.

"Well, I can see you really do care for one another!" the director said. "It's a good thing, too! It would be horrible to put your career on the line for someone you didn't truly care about!"

"Sir, care is a gross understatement! I am madly, deeply, head over heels in love with Sue! I don't know what I'd do without her in my life! Quite frankly, I'm not sure how I managed to wait so long without letting her know how I truly feel!" Jack said, gazing intently into Sue's eyes.

"And I feel exactly the same for him, sir!" Sue added, as she gazed into Jack's eyes.

"So, sir, if you have to fire us, or transfer one or both of us, then so be it! But I will not stop dating her!" Jack said defiantly.

"Well, I have to say I'm a little taken aback by your response, Hudson! And the fact that you've decided to break the rules, is a surprise, as well! You have quite the reputation in the bureau for being a strictly "by the book" agent!" the director said.

"Well, sir, I do firmly believe in following the rules, in most cases! This is just NOT one of those cases! It's a stupid, archaic rule that makes no sense whatsoever! As long as the relationship doesn't affect our work, which it hasn't and won't, why does it matter?! And if our supervisor is in support of our relationship, which he is," Jack said looking at D, "I really don't understand why we can't be allowed to date!"

"Jaaaccckkk!" Sue wailed. "Do you really think you should talk to the director of the F.B.I. that way?" she asked with a very worried look on her face.

"I'm sorry, sir!" Jack said. "I kind of got carried away."

Without warning, the director started laughing, a deep, low, rumbling laugh, as Jack, Sue, and D looked on in confusion.

Now I'm worried ... they're all fretting about 'dating' ... shouldn't they be thinking further? Not a whole lot of good if the director says they can date then states but they can't marry ...

But they're so cute!- Well, at least I think so, I have 2 rats. One is so fat he had to go on a diet, the other is the perkiest little cutie!

Chapter 18:

"Sir, do you mind sharing with us what it is that you find so funny?" D asked.

"I'm sorry, I shouldn't have let it go on this long, I know! My wife accuses me of having a wicked sense of humor, and I guess she's right!" the director said.

"What do you mean?" Jack, Sue, and D said in unison.

"Let what go on this long?" D continued.

"The truth is that the stupid, archaic no-dating within units rule, as you called it, Hudson, is being amended. Effective next week, inter-unit dating will be allowed, as long as it doesn't negatively impact work and the supervisor supports it!" the director gleefully announced.

"Are you serious?" Jack and Sue asked hopefully.

"Serious as a heart attack!" the director said.

"Ummm...sir, are you aware that I did have a heart attack years ago? And that you very well could have given me another one just now?" Jack asked.

"Ohh, sorry!" said the director, in embarrassment. "I was not aware of that..."

"So, neither of us has to transfer?" Sue asked, making sure she completely understood.

"That's correct, Thomas! But since the change doesn't officially go into effect until the beginning of next week, you might want to try to keep your relationship as quiet as possible for a week." the director said.

"I think we can handle that!" Jack said smiling and winking at Sue.

"Sir, I have a meeting I have to be at in a couple of minutes" D said to the director, after checking his watch.

"You are free to go, Gans. Thank you for your time!" the director said.

"Thank you for not splitting our unit up!" D said smiling at Jack and Sue. Then he exited the director's office.

As the director stood up behind his desk, Jack and Sue both stood up as well. He reached an outstretched hand to Sue and then to Jack. "Well, it's been a pleasure talking to you both! You really do make an attractive couple! And it's so obvious how much you love one another! I hope and pray everything works out for the two of you!"

"Thank you, sir! We appreciate it!" they both said.

"You are free to go!" the director said, with a smile.

Jack and Sue both turned around to go out the door, huge smiles of relief plastered on their faces. "Hudson," the director said, Jack turned in response, "I EXPECT an invitation to the wedding!"

"Yes, sir! Will do, sir!" Jack said with a huge smile.

"And have a good day!" the director said.

"You too, sir!" Jack said.

"Did I miss something?" Sue asked Jack as they headed back to the bullpen.

"Not really, dear. The director said to have a good day." Jack said smiling and winking at Sue, while trying to decide the perfect time, place, and way to propose.
