Chapter 8:

Upon returning from lunch, Jack and Sue observed that they were the last to return, and Lucy was finishing setting up the case board.

A little while later the team gathered around the board to review everything they knew about the case, thus far.

"Okay, team, let's review the facts of the case here!" said Jack, standing in front of the board that Lucy had prepared with all the gathered facts, pictures, etc.

"The two kidnappers, we're calling them Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dumber," eliciting laughter from most of the team members, "are also known as Eli and Jake Morris. They're brothers. Both college students. Eli is 22, Jake 20. Neither one of them have any prior convictions, not even so much as a speeding ticket."

"Certainly a big step from no prior convictions to kidnapping a federal employee." Myles noted, with raised eyebrow.

"Yeah, well, something tells me that they didn't think much about the consequences of their actions before executing their plan, mate!" said Bobby.

"Something tells me that they are probably not the brightest crayons in the box...they're a few fries short of a Happy Meal...they're a few cards short of a full deck...they're one taco short of a combination plate..." said Tara with a goofy grin, as she paused. "Need I go on..."

"NO!!! WE GET THE POINT, TARA!" everyone yelled, except Sue who was very obviously confused.

"Good, cause I was running out of 'em!" said Tara in amusement.

Still confused, Sue asked "Are you trying to confuse me? I didn't catch that! What did I miss?".

"Tara, being goofy! She was just trying to say that she suspected that the kidnappers are not very smart!" said Lucy.

"Then why didn't she just say that..." asked Sue, looking towards Tara, who signed "Sorry", then towards Jack who signed "Crazy. T-a-r-a."

"Back to the facts..." Jack said, after rolling his eyes at Tara. "The brothers currently still live at home with their parents. The parents had recently grown weary of their sons' refusal to help around the house, their poor scholastic achievement, and their late night partying. The parents told their sons last week that they were going to have get jobs and either start paying rent or move out within a month. Yesterday, they were in the coffee shop and overheard Randy boasting about how he was a VERY important employee of the FBI and we couldn't function without him and we'd give our right arm to rescue him, if anything ever happened to him."

"Nice to know Randy's ego isn't TOO over-inflated!!!" Myles said sarcastically, as the whole team was busy giggling.

"Yeah, well, I guess the temptation was too much for the brother's, and they thought they could be living on easy street. All they'd have to do is kidnap Randy from the coffee shop and contact the FBI to demand the ransom." Jack continued.

"Little did they know they were kidnapping the biggest pain-in-the-posterior pip-squeak around!" said Myles, with a grin.

"So, this morning they entered the coffee shop shortly after Randy did and left soon after, with him in tow, holding what most witnesses guessed to be a gun on Randy, though Tweedle Dumb had it hidden in his jacket pocket."

"Are you sure it wasn't Tweedle Dumber?" Bobby asked with a dimpled grin.

Smiling, Jack responded "Yes, it was definitely Tweedle Dumb, not Tweedle Dumber, Crash!"

"How do you know the difference, Sparky?" asked Bobby, amused.

"Isn't it obvious, Tweedle Dumb is the older brother, Tweedle Dumber is the younger brother?!" Jack said.

"The call came in 10 to 15 minutes after they exited the coffee shop. They demanded one million dollars in ransom and requested that the exchange be made day after tomorrow, Friday, at two in the afternoon, outside of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum." Jack said, as he was once again interrupted.

"That's, of course, assuming they can make it that long! This IS Randy we're talking about!" Myles commented.

"Yes, well...Tara tried tracking the phone call, but it only lasted a couple of minutes, and was made from a pre-paid cellphone. So, no luck there..." Jack finished, just before D came into the bullpen.

"Team, we have an update" D announced with a slight grin. "The kidnappers called again. They claimed they didn't want to be too greedy and would consider dropping the ransom to half a million, if we move the exchange to two in the afternoon, tomorrow, instead of day after tomorrow. Same place as before, outside the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum."

"Ahhh, as I suspected, Randy is driving them insane!" Myles smuggly proclaimed.

i love this story, i can imagine randy the ridiculous is driving them nuts

i'd like to see him hauled over the coals on his return though, he must have breached confidentiality and security with his boasting, maybe he could be demoted to mailman for a while, or maker of the teams coffee and general errand boy

Chapter 9:

Two hours later...

"The kidnappers have contacted us, once again, and have now said that they are willing to take only $125,000, on the condition we deliver the ransom to the agreed upon location in two hours." D said.

"What is this, like the third time, the kidnappers have lowered the ransom?" Lucy asked.

"This really is growing quite comical! Tweedle Dumb and Tweedle Dumber really are becoming desperate." Myles said dryly.

"Something tells me if we wait long enough, the kidnappers may offer to pay us to take Randy back!!!" Tara said with a laugh, sending the rest of the team into fits of laughter, as well.

"Except I don't think they could afford our price!" Jack said in amusement.

Chapter 10:

Approximately two hours later, the kidnappers surrendered willingly to the FBI, providing absolutely no resistance whatsoever. In fact, they were extremely relieved to be arrested and hauled away from Randy.

"Even jail has got to be better than spending time around THAT man!" said Jake, the younger brother, to his older brother Eli.

"If we had known what a pain he was, we would have never kidnapped him!" declared the brothers. "No amount of money is worth putting up with him!"

As the handcuffed brothers walked past Jack and Sue, Eli inquired "You two work with him?"

"Yes!" both Jack and Sue answered in unison.

"I'm so, so, so very sorry! You have our sympathy! How unfortunate for you!" Eli responded with pity.

"Thank you..." Sue and Jack both said, while trying to suppress the laughter that was building up in both of them.

Randy soon followed saying in his characteristically nasal voice "It's about time you guys got here! I thought you were supposed to be the FBI's finest! I thought I was going to have to fend for myself and devise some way out of this situation on my own!"

"Well, that's gratitude for ya!" Jack declared. "Maybe next time we should just take Myles's advice!" he said with a smile, as he winked at Sue.

"Yeah, well, thank you!" Randy said with a sarcastic tone. "And what, may I ask was Leland's advice?"

"Oh, nothing..." Jack said, sharing a knowing look with Sue.

"Well then!" Randy said frustrated, as he stomped off in a pout.

"He really is an insufferable bore!" said Sue, as she rolled her eyes, sending Jack into a fit of laughter.

Chapter 11:

Having finished eating dinner at Jack's place, both Sue and Jack sat down on his couch to talk. Talk initially gravitated to the case that they had just successfully closed. They both sat sideways, towards one another, so Sue could easily read Jack's lips.

"So, I assume they will be prosecuted?", referring to the kidnappers, "How much time do you think they will get?" asked Sue, with concern.

"I don't know. They did kidnap a federal employee! Who knows? It depends on a lot of different things, but possibly a very long time. Though they may decide to go easy on them since, in the end, they gave themselves up willingly, and they had no prior convictions." answered Jack.

"It's kind of sad. They're so young, so much of their lives ahead of them. Then greed set in and ruined everything. I've seen greed destroy too many people, Jack." said Sue somberly.

"Maybe they'll go for an insanity plea." said Jack, trying to lighten the mood.

"Yeah, well, if they weren't insane before, they probably are now!" said Sue with a giggle.

"Seems like they may have already been punished enough, just spending that time with Randy, huh?" said Jack with a smile.

"Yeah..." Sue responded as she stared intently into Jack's wonderful, beautiful brown eyes. She had found herself lost in those eyes on many occasions, more times than she could count. It reminded her of a song she had become familiar with a long time ago, when she was a teenager -- "Lost In Your Eyes" by Debbie Gibson. She had loved the lyrics to the song and had hoped that one day she would experience those kinds of feelings. She never really had, until she met Jack...

"I get lost in your eyes
And I feel my spirits rise
And soar like the wind...
Is it love that I am in?

I get weak, in a glance
Isn't this, what's called romance?
...and now I know
Cause when I'm lost I can't let go

I don't mind not knowing what I'm headed for
You can take me to the skies...
It's like being lost in heaven
When I'm lost in your eyes

I just fell, don't know why
Something's there, we can't deny...
And when I first knew
Was when I first looked at you

And if I can't find my way
If salvation seems worlds away
Oh, I'll be found
When I am lost in your eyes

I don't mind not knowing what I'm headed for
You can take me to the skies...
It's like being lost in heaven
When I'm lost in your eyes

I get weak in a glance
Isn't this what's called romance?
Oh, I'll be found
When I am lost in your eyes"

Of course, the line that seemed to stick in her mind the most right now was "Something's there, we can't deny...". She really did feel there was something there, and she was becoming more convinced that Jack felt there was too and probably had for a while, just like her. But they HAD managed to deny it, for about three years!

When Jack had had his heart attack, she had been ready to "throw caution to the wind" and declare her true feelings for him, even if it meant a transfer. But, then Allie had shown up! Sue's heart had been broken and her self-confidence temporarily shattered. Then she met David, who at the time had been good for her. He had helped to restore her self-confidence. He had been a sweet guy, and she did care for him, as a friend, but he would never measure up to Jack. But then again, who would? Who could possibly ever measure up to her "Prince Charming"? He was the main reason she had decided not to go to work in New York. Sure, she stayed because of ALL of her friends, but most especially because of Jack! She was hoping by now that he would have made a move, declared his true feelings. "Maybe he hasn't told me he loves me because he doesn't actually love me!" she thought, the self-doubt starting to creep in again. "Maybe I've misread the signals! Maybe..."

Sue was startled out of her daze by a hand on her arm.
