Animal House
Levi grunted as he watched the familiar dance of his mistress and the obvious love of her life, Jack, his best friend and fellow admirer of Sue. Pawing his nose in disgust he rolled his eyes. Humans are so slow he thought to himself.
‘Us animals are just so much more blatant with our attractions and intentions, a sniff at the bum and a wag of the tail and there you go. Why do humans think that they are the intelligent ones, I mean yes they can write and recite poetry but when it comes to amore they are blind and deaf. Boy I have been spending way too much time with Myles’, he said with a shudder.
Pulling himself up onto his feet he went over and nudged Jack’s hand as they stood dancing at the front door.
“Hey there Buddy!” Jack said rubbing his head with his knuckles.
“Ummmm Sue I’ve got to go,” he said with a sad voice, which literally fell on deaf ears.
“Okay” she said with a false grin on her face as she pushed a lock of hair behind her ear.
“I’ve had fun just relaxing. As friends of course…” he added with a stutter. “So I’ll see you on Monday morning?” he asked with a voice laced with disappointment of the whole weekend without Sue.
“See you Monday” she replied waving him good-bye. As the door closed she leaned against it shaking her head. Levi leaned against her legs and nudged her hands with his wet nose.
‘This cannot go on for much longer’ he thought to himself as Sue walked over to the couch and settled down for a Friday night of reading.
‘Something needs to be done and if they are not going to do anything themselves then I will.’ He thought to himself with determination……

That night as the lights were switched off and darkness fell over the apartment Levi rose from his bed as he heard the soft padding of his friends.
“Maud, I tell you Jack looks like the human version of Harvey the hunk.”
“MMM those eyes are too die for. Sue is so lucky when he looks at her.”
“Oh Mattie you and eyes. Personally I love the butt. Firm and round” said Maud with a wink.
“Oh Maud you were always the cheeky one” laughed Mattie as she nudged her sister.
“Well one of us has to be,” she laughed in a high squeak.
“Hello ladies” said Levi rounding the corner.
“Well hello their Levi. How are you tonight?”
“Frustrated” he moaned.
“Still not together” said Mattie
“No where close to it. I’ve decided enough is enough”
“What are you going to do?” asked Maud
“Don’t know yet but I am going to take matters into my own paws.”
“Messing with love is a dangerous thing, just be careful” said wise Maud.
“It’s a dangerous thing not to mess with as well. Oh by the way I managed to snaffle some cheese for you guys. It is planked under the edge of the fridge.”
“You are such a sweetie,” said Mattie pawing him with her tiny paws.
“Well ladies hop on and I’ll carry you over.”
“Oh what a gentleman” said Maud as she sprung up onto his back as Maud followed.
“By the way ladies Lucy is away at her Grams this weekend”
“Fun” laughed Maud
“Imagined if Sue knew we where here” commented Maud
“She would have a fit,” replied Levi. “Remember she is petrified of you small furry creatures.”
“How could anyone be scared of mice?” laughed Mattie at the ridiculous notion as she slid from Levi back and wiggled under the fridge along with Maud to eat.
A sharp tapping at the window made Maud squeak, “That sounds like Larry”
“And yes you are right” woofed Levi softly as he padded over to the window and with an expert nudge and tug at a rope the window opened and with another nudge a block of wood slid into place.
Larry waddled in shaking some raindrops of his grey feathers, “Storm brewing me thinks” said the wood pigeon stretching his neck.
“Hello Larry” came the voice from under the fridge.
“Hello ladies” he squawked back loudly then diving down he looked at Levi.
“Lucy is at her grams but just remember we have neighbours.”
“Phew close one.” He said waddling over to the ladies as their exited the kitchen.
“So what’s new?” he asked settling down.
“Jack is still turtle boy. I mean Tommy the turtle was quicker with Lolly when he was after her.” Said Maud shaking her head.

“Interesting” said Larry looking at Levi.
“What’s interesting?” asked Tammy the small owl as she flew thru the window.

“Definitely interesting” said Tammy
“How’s the diet?” asked Maud.
“Going well. I am sure my cholesterol is down and I am not missing meat at all.”
“Good to hear that” said Mattie and Maud together.
“Oh I would never have had you for dinner” said Tammy.
“Good to know that” said Maud with a small smile.
“So Levi do you have a plan?” asked Tammy
“Nope not yet” he said laying his head on his paws.
“Well you have us here now, surely together we could come up with some wonderful plan.”

The mice scurried back and forth thinking intensely with their tiny yet intelligent minds. Larry flapped his wings every now and then while contemplating deep ideas and Tammy big eyes stared into space. Levi watched them as he thought himself as to how do you get two humans together.
“We could lock them in a room?” suggested Larry staring at the others hopefully
“No thumbs” pointed out Tammy, “How do you suggest we do that”
“We could…..no we couldn’t” said Mattie shaking her head.
“Maybe….No scrap that idea” said Maud wiggling her wee nose.
“Levi do we have any evidence, physical that is of Sue’s love for Jackson” asked Tammy with a gentle hoot.
Several seconds passed and then Levi head whipped up.
“Yes” he woofed, staring at the others.
“What?” the others creatures shouted.
“Just before Sue was suppose to go to New York she sat down and wrote this long letter to Jack declaring her love for him in it. I know this to be true as she insisted on reading it back to me, over and over again. She never did give it to him, once she decided to stay she hide it in a poetry book in her bookcase in her room and occasionally she takes it out and reads it.”
“Gold” said Tammy with a flap of her long wings.
“So if we could get Jack to read it then he would know that Sue loves him,” said Mattie with a bounce on her hind legs.

Go animals go! I love the way you right them. I feel like I'm in the middle of a Disney movie or Watership Down or Pearl's Promise. Has anyone read Pear's Promise? Great dramatic read aloud of the 7-9 crowd. Harrowing adventures of mice. Really clever.

“I think I have it,” said Maud with a smirk, her eyes gleaming with potential.
“Go on” barked Levi as his tail brushed the floor in long sweeps.
“Well as you were saying earlier on, Sue has a problem of sorts with us mice. I was thinking we could use that irrational fear to our advantage. I mean how could anyone be scared of us; we are tiny, with cute paws and faces and really what harm can we do. Irrational, I mean….”
“MAUD, point?” butted in Larry as his head swam with irrational fears.
“Well thru personal experience and I am sure Mattie can back me up here, when we come face to face with fearful women they tend to phone a man to come to their rescue. I mean really who needs a man to rescue them from us…pffftt.”
“Come down off your soap box,” laughed Mattie, “But she is true and of course it would give Sue a perfect opportunity to spend some more time with Jack.” She said raising her tiny little eyebrows.
“Okay so we know how to get Jack here but how do we get the letter into his wings?” asked Tammy with a soft hoot.
“Mmmmmm” came the reply from Levi as he started to pace the room.
Suddenly Larry started to hop from one foot to another and waving his wings frantically.
“Got an idea then?” asked Maud sarcastically.
“We need a distraction!” he said proudly.
“What do you mean?” asked Mattie scurrying over to him and cocking her head.
“Well we NEED to get the letter from it’s hiding place and the only way we can do that is by making a distraction.”
“And once we have the letter we could leave it for Jack to find.” Said Mattie bouncing on her hind legs.
“Exactly” said Larry proudly.
Levi ears rose up in excitement. “I’ve got it, come in close” he said as his tail went round in circles. The others formed a tight circle and listened heartily to the plan…..

The next morning as the sun was still low in the sky and it’s blazing rays where just starting to heat up the city Sue rose from her slumber and pulled on her jogging suit. Tying her long mane back into a rough ponytail she exited her room and whistled to Levi.
Smiling to himself he sprung up to his feet his tail furiously wagging from side to side and obediently walked over to his mistress. From the corner of his eye he could see Maud and Mattie bounce excitedly on their hind legs and he grinned over to them and winked secretively. As he headed to the front door he could feel the gentle breeze on his rump from the window he left open.
“Come on Levi, time for a run” Sue chirped in as she gently tugged on the leash.
Happily he followed her out, quite contempt that when he was out the mice will play…

Hearing the clash of the door against its lintel Larry peered around the window frame and into the deserted room. Hunching over he slipped into the room and flew across the living room to the closed bedroom door where Maud and Mattie stood patiently waiting.
“Hello ladies, nice day for looooooovvvvveee”
“Good day to you too,” said Mattie with a large smile.
Maud who was standing there studying the door with a furrowed brow turned to the others, “How are we going to get in?”
“Toot” came the sound from across the room as Tammy joined the group.
“I think I know how too,” she said perching herself on the low table beside the door. “Maud I will need your assistance.”
Shrugging her shoulders she just said, “sure.”
Jumping down she gathered Maud into her talons without hurting her and flew her to the round doorknob and gently placed her on it. The beating of her large wings nearly toppling Maud off her perch. She flew around in a circle and came back on an angle grabbed the smooth brass surface between her talons.
“Between the two of us we should be able to budge this if you two at the bottom push as we do it. Okay?”
“Righto” shouted back Larry as he braced himself against the door with Mattie at his side.
“After three. One, two, three” and with much effort and brut strength the door swung open a fraction but that was all they needed.
The troop entered the private domain of the female human and hurried over to the large oak bookcase.
“Umm guys can any of you read?” asked a worried Larry.
“Indeed I can,” answered Tammy as she flapped her wings sending Mattie flying back by accident. “Oh sorry”
“That’s okay” she replied brushing herself off.
“What was the name of the book again?” asked Tammy as she prepared to take off.
“The complete collection of Robert Burns” said Mattie.
“Right, give me a second” she said as she spread her wings and took flight. She carefully searched the many books that filled the case. “Got it” she finally called down to the others. With a mighty tug she heaved it from it’s placed and flew down with it. Cautiously she dropped it on the floor beside the others.
Between the two mice they opened the book and started to search thru its pages.
“Found it” squealed Maud as they all looked upon a neatly placed envelope. Larry carefully placed it in his beak and flew out of the room and dropped it on the floor beside the couch, just hidden from direct view of the doorway.
“Yeah” shouted the two mice as they bounced around the place.

What a wonderful concept! Thank you so much for posting pictures of your new characters. For those like me who can be imaginationally challenged, it really helps to 'see' what you are writing. What a cute mix of characters and a cute story idea. It's nice to read a story that you can smile and say "aaahhh" to. Love those warm, fuzzies. (In this case, I guess fuzzy can be taken in more than one sense, eh?)

She entered her apartment and headed straight for her room. Levi could just make out a whisk of a tail disappearing behind a chair. Grinning madly he thought to himself how part 2 was just about to begin.
Sue peeled off her sweaty clothes and allowed the hot water to spray from the faucet. Gathering together all her necessaries she stepped under the pounding water. The force of the water eased her tired muscles and springing them back to life. It washed away the sweat and stress of the week. Finally she stepped out and wrapped herself in a long bath towel. Walking over to the mirror she started to dry her hair, she was feeling very relaxed and at peace. Once she was pretty much dry she shrouded herself in a long terry robe and tied it tight at the waist. Running her fingers thru her matted hair she walked out of the steam room. Her eyes darted into the living room and an almighty blood-curdling scream
Ripped from her petite body, shattering the stillness…….

I just found this story and I think it is great! I love how Levi has his little helpers around him! And their conversations are just hilarious...... can't wait for Jack to arrive to comfort Sue, and of course to find the letter!!!!

That reaction is soo funny, reminds me of when my mum saw a mouse in our bathroom; she screamed, jumped on top of the toilet with one foot in the sink trying to get further from the floor!
She wouldn't get down until someone came in and got the mouse out

I know Mattie and Maud to be lovely and perfectly harmless...since I've already met them from a safe distance. I must confess if I came out of the shower and saw them on my living room floor...yeah I'd give out a blood-curdling scream too.
