I may not be able to post for the next three days so here's the next one

Chapter 7

Sitting in Charlie’s room that evening Jack could feel his stomach churning. He’d headed home to shower and change before driving to the hospital, planning on taking Sue out for dinner after visiting was over.

To his dismay, Troy and Luce were there, giving him no time to talk alone with Sue and Luce ended up taking her home.

As Jack left shortly after Troy, Charlie called him back, ‘thought about what I said Jack?’

‘Yeah…….. I was going to speak to her tonight……… over dinner……. I’d been planning it for hours………….’

‘Good………… you two could be about to make an old man very happy……..’

Charlie smiled at the young man standing before him, if they were half as happy as he and Thelma had been they would be very blessed. Tears began to trickle down his face as Jack panicked; convinced he was having another attack.

‘You Ok there Charlie?’ Jack turned to go find a nurse.

‘Yeah………. just miss her so bad still…….. forgive an old man for interfering …… I want you and Sue to have what Thelma and I have…….. and I can’t stand to see you two dancing around each other any longer……’

‘I never thought she felt the same………. I was so scared of losing her friendship’ he mumbled as he took the seat beside the bed, ‘you sure you’re Ok?’

‘I’m fine……….. as I said I miss her…….. more than I ever thought possible, even now after more than 5 years I still find myself turning to her to tell her something at night, or I pick up the phone to ring her during the day………. When Sue arrived I wanted to tell Thelma all about this wonderful woman I’d met……….. and all about you guys and Troy……….’

‘She sounds very special………… I’m sorry I never got to meet her, Charlie……. but I promise I will talk to Sue…………’

‘Good………..’ Charlie drifted off to sleep and Jack quietly left.

Aww, Charlie is so sweet. Now Jack has to speak to Sue!

Charlie did seem so lost at the beginning of the show, until Sue took him under her wing. And now, he has a whole new family. Glad Jack is taking his advice.

Chapter 8

The following evening Jack and Sue arrived to visit Charlie, unaware the other was planning on being there.

Both had spent the day dancing around each other, trying to find the right words and failing miserably.

Walking Levi at lunchtime had been a disaster, both quiet and withdrawn, each wondering if Charlie was right or totally misguided, both still afraid to take the risk of declaring their feelings and losing a very precious friendship.

Watching first Sue walk in then Jack some 20 minutes later and sit opposite sides of the bed avoiding looking at each other Charlie sighed.

‘Sue……… remember our conversation yesterday? Have you done anything about it?’ Sue shook her head, hoping Jack wasn’t listening too closely, not that he would know what they were talking about.


‘Jack, have you done anything about our conversation yesterday?’ Jack shook his head sadly, knowing he was a wuss.

Charlie took a deep breath; if this didn’t work, plan B as he’d designated it, he was going to move on to plan C and text the Troy Meyer Head Banging Services to intervene.

‘Right you two listen up and listen good………. Sue, Jack loves you……… Jack, Sue loves you……… now get out of here, start talking and don’t come visit again unless you are together…….. and I mean together as a couple not just turning up at the same time……………’

‘CHARLIE……………!!’ Sue was mortified at the man’s words while Jack had turned a vivid shade of red.

‘Don’t ‘Charlie’ me……… get out of here…….. and when you come back bring some decent food with you…………….the stuff in here is worse than the food I used to put in the microwave before you bought me that amazing microwave cookbook……….’ Sue smiled at him, remembering fondly those first few days in DC when Charlie became her friend.

Charlie waved towards the door, ‘get outtta here………..’

‘You wanna walk Levi…….. then we can talk…….. I’m guessing the conversation you had with Charlie was similar to the one I had’ Jack suggested, kicking himself again for being such a wimp.

‘Not yet……….. I just want to ask you one question……….. is he right?’

‘You mean am I in love with you?’ Jack whispered, unable to speak coherently.

Sue nodded, getting totally lost in Jack’s eyes as he gazed at her.

‘Yes…… he is………. I have been for a long time………. but I was scared of losing our friendship if I said anything………… I wanted you to feel the same, but I couldn’t see how ………. was he right about you?’

Sue nodded, all her hopes and dreams had come true tonight. ‘I love you Jack…….’

‘I love you too Sue………..’ He pulled her close, bending his head a little, his mind casting back to the first and only kiss so far, at Callaghan and Merced, this would not be an undercover kiss, it would be filled with passion, desire, hope and love.

Recovering her breath and trying hard to stop her legs from giving way under her Sue gasped ‘I think we should go make an old man very happy………. then head out for dinner…………’

Holding hands they walked back in to his room. Checking his watch Charlie was stunned, ‘blimey you two move quick when you finally decide to take action……..’ he grinned at their embarrassment. ‘get outta here …. just make sure I get an invite to the wedding………..’

Jack nodded, ‘one thing Charlie……. well two actually, firstly thanks……… for giving us the kick we obviously needed and ………. we have a no-dating policy……… can we keep this quiet for a while………..’

‘No worries, my lips will be sealed………. go and thanks for coming back to see me………..’

As the door closed behind them Charlie smiled to himself before drifting off to sleep.

The walk to the car park was punctuated with numerous very passionate kisses and Levi eventually gave up trying to attract their attention, preferring to lie down and catch a snooze since they ignored him.

Sitting at Jack’s sharing pizza and more kisses the rest of the night passed in a flash before Sue reluctantly headed home.

Walking in to the apartment she realised Luce was still awake, ‘everything OK Sue? You’re really late and it’s a school day tomorrow……..’


‘Yeah……… we grabbed take out and walked Levi after visiting Charlie……….’

‘We……..?’

‘Mmmmmmmmm Jack turned up and offered to buy, since I hadn’t eaten much since Charlie was admitted…… if I’m late I expect he’ll write me a note……….’

Sue headed for bed, wondering how long she could keep the secret, knowing there was no way she was going to be late for work since Jack was meeting her to walk Levi before heading in to the pen.

Watching her disappear into her room Luce grinned, something was different and she was fairly sure that ‘something’ was them dating.

Chapter 9

Returning from the store with mugs, coffee and other essential supplies Jack grinned sheepishly as the guys spied the donuts he’d bought. ‘I figured we all needed a sugar fix, don’t know about you but I’m not sure I can face meat right about now……..’ the thought of hundreds of frozen rats was making his stomach churn.

Picking up a donut Myles commented darkly, ‘you know what he’s called the rats……………..?’

Jack shook his head as D’s shoulders shook with mirth, ‘Leland and Manning……….’ D couldn’t stop himself from blurting it out, earning himself a black look from Myles and Bobby.

‘I hate to think what he’s named after me’ Jack mumbled.

‘You apparently are a Boa Constrictor…….. the big one at the far end……. that looks as if it could eat Levi as a snack……………’

‘The Iguana next to the boa, the big fat one…… is named ‘Ted’ while he has 2 pythons called William and Lucy……….. one tarantula is named Wayne, another is called Donna……..a Mexican Red kneed spider is called ‘Morris’, he has 2 geckoes called Thomas and Levi and a rattle snake called D……………. Myles’ voice got louder as the rant continued and Jack guessed that the guys had seriously considered feeding Randy as live bait.

‘So what happened to Fluffy, Bumble and Snoopy?’ Sue asked, not impressed that she had a lizard named after her.

‘They appear to be the three extremely fat and juicy African snails that D found when he went to use the bathroom facilities……….he found the shower instead, complete with guests, they are in a tank though, not the bath………

‘Please tell me there is another shower…………,’

‘If there is we haven’t located it ……… sorry Sue…….. but at least they will be easy to feed……. they only eat lettuce and the like,‘ Bobby explained.

‘Oh joy………. I get to share my washing facilities with snails………must learn to say ‘no’ when people ask for favours………..’

‘You could stay at yours and come over each morning……….’ D suggested.

‘I’d never have time to walk Levi, drive over, feed them and get to work on time…………….’ Sue explained.

She’d thought about it when she’d seen the array of creatures before dismissing it as impractical.

‘Maybe Tara or Luce would come over and help out………….’ Myles suggested, and then remembered how they’d reacted when they saw a few rats scurrying around a crime scene recently and shook his head, no that was a bad idea……. a very bad idea………..

Sue shook her head, ‘that wouldn’t work…………….I’d be clearing up vomit as well as feeding critters……..’


As the guys headed home Sue settled down to read the instructions, waiting for Jack to return so they could walk Levi.

Sitting on the couch together, Jack commented, ‘you know there’s a lot to be said for you staying here………..’

‘There is……….? Care to share Hudson?’

‘Well……….. no-one to ask where you’ve been or what time you got home……. We don’t have to put up with my nosey neighbours spying on us ever time we go or arrive……….. I can see endless possibilities……….’ Jack grinned at her as he spoke.

‘Great thoughts Hudson………. but I’m not too sure I’ll get much sleep with killer snakes and spiders next door……………….I might be too tired to date you…… for the next few weeks……’


‘Better make the most of tonight then hadn’t I?’ he pulled her close before engaging her in a very passionate kiss which had them eventually surfacing for air, lying together on the couch.

Saying goodnight in the early hours of the morning they agreed that Jack would come over to help with the feeding the following morning.

Sorry you had a bad day -- but the post was...well frankly nauseating -- in a good way! I'm afraid that I could not even concnetrate on kissing Jack with that lot in tow. We need a shuddering smilie here.

Chapter 10

Arriving at the pen the next morning having fed the animals which ate fruit or vegetables Sue explained, ‘I forgot to get the mice out of the freezer last night and I didn’t have time this morning………. I’ll take them out tonight and feed them tomorrow.’

‘Did you know some people feed live rats and mice to their snakes……..? The guy at the reptile shop was telling me,’ Myles commented, he wasn’t keen on rodents of any variety but the thought of feeding a live one to a snake had turned his stomach…………. In fact his breakfast had almost paid a return visit.

Chatting about the creatures and their feeding habits, Sue could see the girls heaving.

‘Sue…………. we’ve found someone who will assist with cleaning them out………’ D handed her a sheet of paper with the necessary details, ‘ring him to set up a date……..’ he grinned as he noticed Jack shudder at the word ‘date’, ‘he might help with the feeding if it gets too much.’


Sue nodded her thanks and took the paper from D, ‘and I spoke to Ted about Randy’s actions……….. he said, as I suspected, that you’re doing the guy a favour and if anything happens to any of his animals he can’t take it out on you at work…….. if he tries you must let him know……… and before anyone asks, no I didn’t tell him about his namesake…………’

‘His namesake………? What am I missing here?’ Luce asked.

As Myles filled her and Tara in, Sue sat quietly at her desk, hoping she didn’t look as tired as she felt………she knew she was being irrational but when she finally got to sleep her dreams were of snakes and spiders crawling over her and suffocating her.

The only times she’d had worse nightmares was when Jack had his heart attack and she was afraid she would lose him, not that she had him at the time……… and the times he was shot, sometimes the dreams would re-live the events while other times he died……….. she’d been woken more than once by Levi pulling the covers off her, probably his sad efforts to help her. She put her hand down, feeling Levi’s head snuffle her fingers and ruffled his head before looking up to see Jack staring at her.


‘OK YOU?’

Sue nodded, knowing Jack would offer to stay with her, knowing she would be very tempted to take him up on the offer…….. their kisses left her wanting more, each one arousing longings in her body and soul.

Jack was ensuring they didn’t go beyond their boundaries and Sue was grateful for his control since she found herself very adept at unbuttoning his shirt, almost without realising what she was doing……… if she went too far, he placed his hands gently on hers.

Some days she wished he’d just ask her to marry him……. then they could get married and she wouldn’t have to be so restrained…………..

Roused from her thoughts she looked up to see Jack staring down at her, ‘You sure you’re Ok?’

‘Just thinking……… remembering………. hoping……..’

‘Hoping……….? Hoping for what?’

She grinned, ‘hoping that a certain very special agent might come to a damsels rescue and help her defrost some furry creatures tonight………’

‘And who might that special agent be? Myles? Crash? D?’

She slapped him on the arm, ‘there’s only one special agent as far as I’m concerned….. so will you?’

‘I’ll have to check my schedule………. I might have a hot date tonight……….’

‘Whoever she is I’d better not find out……….. I’ll have to take her out…….. no-one has a date with my man and lives to tell the tale…………….’

She grinned at him and his heart felt as though it was cartwheeling around the pen, ‘maybe I could cancel it then……… I’d hate to be responsible for a death ’

‘Yes I guess you had better cancel your hot date, you have a date with dead rats…….. and if you do a good job I might even buy you dinner………..’

‘Free dinner huh?’ his eyebrows moved up and he fluttered his incredibly long lashes at her, ‘consider my date cancelled…………’

‘Guys……… I need to cancel tonight……….. I’ve promised Sue I’ll help with Randy’s pets…………….’ He turned a little, keeping Sue in his eye-line.

‘Ok……… we can catch up another time, Sparky……….‘

Bobby winked at the guys, did they have no idea how obvious they could be even when they were trying to be professional.

D sighed; he really needed to talk to Ted about this stupid policy.

Watching him head out the door Sue turned back to Jack who was now leaning against her desk, ‘you were going out with the guys?’

‘We thought we might have a game, since last night was interrupted by us rushing like knights in shining armour to rescue a very beautiful damsel in distress…………..’

‘Jack……….. I’m sorry……… you go…….. I’ll be fine………’ for some reason Sue felt incredibly guilty, she’d taken down terrorists, among others…… a few rats shouldn’t be a problem…………….

‘Sue……….. I want to spend the evening with you……. especially if you are buying dinner…….. but if it’s take out can we go to mine please…….. I had a nightmare about snakes and spiders………….’

He blushed as he spoke, he was tough on the outside but Sue loved it when he showed her his vulnerable side, ‘so did I …….. perhaps we could compare nightmares over dinner……………’

Chapter 11

Sitting in Ted’s office having closed the door, D took a deep breath, ‘this needs to be off the record Sir……… but we have a possible situation ….. well 3 possible situations……….’

Ted took a deep breath; he’d known this would be coming soon, having seen Jack and Sue together recently. But even before she changed her mind about New York he was aware they had feelings for each other even if they hadn’t done anything about it.

‘OK D ……. What would you like to talk about?’

‘I think Jack and Sue might be dating……….. I don’t know anything official… and I could be wrong………..’

‘But if they are it goes against bureau policy………..’ Ted interrupted.

D nodded.

‘So what are the other situations you wanted to discuss……………?’

‘I suspect that Bobby is dating Tara and Myles is dating Luce…….. again I have nothing definite but if they are …………….’

‘If they are we need to find a loophole or break up the best team in the bureau…….. and having seen the team work I would prefer to find a loophole or scrap this stupid policy………….. D I need you to be honest……. If we either scrap the policy or find a loophole, what would happen………?’

‘With Jack and Sue it wouldn’t make a difference……. they’ve had feelings…… very strong feelings for each other almost since she started at the bureau……’

Ted nodded and indicated that D should continue.

‘It’s never been a problem; Jack has always looked out for her a little more than Tara or Luce…….. but that could be as much because she’s deaf and obviously at a disadvantage when we go out on a case………. but he asks and gives no favours……… we all know how they feel about each other and they’ve been ‘dating’ without really dating for years…………’

‘And if they split up? What then?’

‘There is no chance of them splitting Ted……… they are a marriage made in heaven……my guess is that almost as soon as they’re married they’ll be having children………. the others I can’t be so sure……….. I can see Bobby and Tara married…….. as for Myles and Luce I’m not convinced….. last time when they split it was a bit difficult but nothing we couldn’t handle………….’

‘I don’t want to split this team, D……… if they do all get married it may change because of babies, assuming they all want children but for now I’d like to keep you together………….I have an idea I’d like to run past you………’

‘We need to be a little devious here D……… not that I would usually sanction such an approach ………. If we can’t get the higher-ups to scrap the rule as being archaic and out of touch we could suggest a trial, which if successful could allow Supervisors a little discretion……. We suggest Jack and Sue since we know they won’t split……… then that paves the way for all other couples…………’

‘I think that would work Sir……….. if you speak to the Director, without naming names, get the go-ahead and when Jack comes to see me………. or you since he may well by-pass me we can tell him the news………. If Bobby or Myles come to one of us first then we’ll need to see Jack………’

D and Ted shook hands then went their separate ways.

Receiving a call an hour later from Ted D headed out of the office.

‘Good news D………. he has agreed to allow Supervisors to oversee any inter-unit relationships as a trail………. If there are two or three relationships which work out or fail but don’t cause any problems to other members of the teams then he is prepared to consider recommending that the FBI scrap the policy as totally out-dated…………… I didn’t tell him who was dating, merely explained that I thought there were a couple of people in the building who had feelings for each other…………’

Ted smiled to himself, he hadn’t needed to mention any names, the Director knew exactly who he was referring to.

Well, this looks promising.

Chapter 12

‘Defrosting furry critters’ alert but does contain some fuzzies………

Putting on a pair of the snazzy blue evidence gloves he’d picked up from the bureau, Jack was glad he hadn’t eaten yet.

As Sue read out the instructions from the list, Jack carefully untied plastic bags and removed a frozen creature, placing it on a board while Sue wrote what animal it was destined for.

Levi looked on in confusion, he wanted his dinner and all he could hear was discussions about dead rats………. Sometimes life wasn’t fair, since when had he been lower down the pecking order than a snake……..? OK it was a big snake and named after his second favourite human but it still wasn’t right.

‘How do you think Leland and Manning would feel if they knew we were feeding their long lost cousins to the snakes upstairs……….?’

He grinned at her and her heart began to crash against her ribcage, he was wearing tight black jeans that made him look even hotter than usual and a plain white t-shirt which showed off his muscular body ……….. once again she was going to have a hard time keeping her hands off him.

‘I think they might jump up and bite him on the finger………… do you think we could plant that idea in their mind while I’m here? I mean if you can hypnotise a chicken there must be a way of implanting vicious thoughts into a couple of rats………….’

Shaking a finger at her Jack accidentally threw the mouse he was holding and she let out an ear piercing scream as it became entangled in her hair, it wasn’t so much the thought of a dead mouse that had her freaking but the fact that it was very, very cold against her head, and it had hit with some force.

Extracting the mouse and chucking it into the open freezer, Jack pulled the gloves off and touched the spot on her head where the mouse had come to rest before moving his mouth down to hers and kissing her so passionately her legs almost gave way.

Breathless but wanting more she moved away and suggested they finished the job in hand, ‘then we can go for dinner……….’

‘How about I get a kiss for every mouse or rat I extract from the freezer………?’ he grinned and looked hopeful.

‘How about you remove all the rats we need……….. then you can have as many kisses as you want, Hudson………….’

‘Is that a promise………? Cos if it is I intend to collect on it…………. but then we might never get to dinner………..’

‘Back to work Hudson………. you’re slacking again…….. I’ll have to report you to Randy…………….’ She pointed at the freezer then slapped him across the backside before moving away to pick up the list of instructions as he pouted at her.

Wagging his finger at her he muttered, ‘you wait………. just you wait Miss Thomas………..’

‘Gonna punish me are you……….?’ She flashed him a sexy smile, knowing the effect it had on him.

‘Yup…….. I’m withdrawing all kissing privileges Thomas……………’

‘Is that so Hudson………….? Well maybe I’ll have to take drastic action’,

Swinging her hips she ambled over to him, pinning his arms by his side before tracing gentle kisses down his neck and up his throat, feeling the groans of pleasure in his throat then planting her lips firmly on his, knowing he would have to respond……… sure enough his response was quick and very, very good. Releasing his arms she moved her hands to run her fingers through his hair, feeling him run one hand through her hair while he traced the other hand up and down her spine, causing her to moan with pleasure.

As they reluctantly turned their attention to the freezer Jack slipped on another pair of gloves and commented, ‘when we have children can we please make sure the only pets they have are of the furry variety………. or fish…….. I could handle fish……….’

Sue stared at him, ‘that a proposal Hudson?’

‘Huh………?’ Jack looked at her blankly since his brain hadn’t been totally engaged when his mouth was open.

Sue repeated his comment back to him and realisation dawned, ‘not really, no……….’

Sue hung her head and turned away, more than a little disappointed.

Disposing of the gloves, Jack lifted her head, ‘I do want to propose, Sue ………. but not over a freezer full of dead rodents……. I wanted to do it properly……. dinner, a ring, the whole romantic bit….. If I were to propose, what would the answer be……..? I mean, having made a bit of a hash of it here, I wouldn’t want to repeat the process again and find my efforts rebuffed………’

‘I think ……… if you were to ask again……….. and not over a freezer full of dead rodents… since it wouldn’t be a great story to tell our parents or children….. or the team……..the answer would probably be ‘yes’………..’

‘You don’t think it’s too soon? I mean we’ve only been dating 3 months………the team don’t even know we’re an item………... and there’s the no dating policy……………..and I haven’t got a ring…….’

Sue smiled and put her fingers over his mouth, ‘how many non date dinners and games and walks have we had………? I’ve known since I met you that you are the man I want to spend the rest of my life with…….. you are everything I want in a husband……….. and it doesn’t matter about a ring………. I’d like to choose my own any way………’

‘Guess we’d best get these rodents sorted so we can go to dinner…….’ Jack pulled her in and kissed her soundly, relishing the beat of her heart as it pounded against his chest.

‘That is not getting the rodents sorted, Hudson……….we’ll never get to dinner at this rate……..’

‘I’d rather eat you………..’ he bent to nibble her ear, pulling away and gagging when she suggested she cooked a couple of rats on toast…….

‘That is not funny………. I can’t propose over rats on toast…….. and what would Bobby and Myles say if they knew we’d eaten a brother or sister…….’

‘If we don’t get this done no-one will be eating anything tonight or tomorrow……… including Levi……..’

Jack reluctantly turned his attention to the rodents, suggesting Sue have a shower when they were finished while he fed Levi, ‘then I’ll shower at mine…… change into something more appropriate for a proposal……..’

‘I don’t have anything here, Luce is out, I can go to mine……….’

Waiting for Sue to shower and change Jack rang a friend who owned a restaurant, explaining the situation and obtaining a table in an hour. Before feeding Levi, Jack took him for a quick run so they had plenty of time together that evening.

I've loved reading all your challenge stories! On the squeamish side however, but I'm glad Jack and Sue are using the situation to their advantage!!!

Ahme -- I don't care who was doing the puckering I just couldn't get um...well...amorous ...in a house full of reptiles and a freezer full of frozen rodents. I've had both mice and rats as pets in the past and you're breaking my little heart...and churning my stomach all at the same time. Now that's talent! And personally if I were Sue I would have placed a call to the Humane Society to tell them about the abaondoned pets and gone on home. to Randy Pitts.
