“Sue, you’ve got another letter!” Lucy informed her roommate after directing Levi to get her attention.
Sue jumped up to take the letter from Lucy. This was the third letter she had received from an anonymous admirer in three days. The other two were fairly short but sweet. The first had read “Sue, you are a beautiful woman, but your wonderful and loving personality overcomes even your amazing beauty. Don’t ever change your caring touch.” Yesterday’s letter had said “Sue, your patience is beyond belief! The way you can keep yourself calm in irritating situations never ceases to amaze me. It’s just another of your many outstanding character traits.” A Dove chocolate had been enclosed in the envelope.
She wondered what today’s message to her would be. She walked to her room to read the new letter-away from Lucy’s prying eyes. Levi jumped on her bed with her as she ripped the envelope open. He sniffed expectantly at the caramel-filled Hershey’s Kiss that fell out. She patted him, set the chocolate kiss on her bedside table, and unfolded the note. It was a little longer than the others. “Sue,” it read, “this is an example of another God-given character trait of yours. You’ll find that this chocolate kiss has a somewhat hard outer shell, but on the inside it is filled with soft, sweet caramel. This is like you. You can be tough on the outside sometimes, but inside you are always soft and sweet and caring.”
She sighed dreamily as she tucked the new note into her top dresser drawer with the other two. Whoever this admirer was, he sure knew how to get on her good side!

Sue and Lucy walked into work the next morning, closely followed by Jack and Bobby, who were talking shoving each other like rambunctious school boys. Sue and Lucy smiled, rolled their eyes, and went to their respective desks. Tara walked in almost immediately after that and stopped by Lucy’s desk to say a few words before hurrying to speak to Sue.
“You got another letter?” She asked right out, without even a ‘hello.’
“Well, good morning, Tara!” Sue responded with a grin.
“Sorry. Hi. How are you?”
“I’m very well, thank you. How are you?’’ Sue asked smiling, knowing Tara was itching to know about the letter. Lucy, of course, had told Tara about the first one the day after it had come, and was telling her all about it. Sue suspected the two of holding gossip sessions about who they thought it was while they were supposed to be talking about work issues.
“I’m fine. What did the letter say?”
Sue laughed. “It’s a secret! If whoever it is wanted you to know he would have sent you a copy!” She told her friend, trying to look indignant and failing completely.
“Whatever you say. But Lucy said the postmark is DC, right?”
“I don’t know. Honestly, I didn’t pay attention to it,” Sue told her. “But it doesn’t surprise me that Lucy knows more about the letters then I do!” She added with a smile.
Tara laughed and headed back to her desk. . Everyone was finishing up paperwork from the case they had wrapped up a couple of days ago. Things had been pretty slow in the bullpen yesterday, and Sue had been off in Never-never land most of the day. Lucy and Tara had exchanged glances, knowing it was because of her letters. They were doing plenty of day-dreaming and thinking about the letters as well. They had talked plenty about it, and had agreed that the admirer had better be Jack!
Sue, meanwhile, had caught Jack looking her way for the third time. Of course, she did her fair share of looking at him, too. Over the past couple days she had been wondering if he might feel something more than just a coworker to coworker relationship. She often saw him looking at her-or just past her- with a faraway look in his eyes, as though thinking about the future or else times long ago. And then there was the letters… She was hoping they might possibly be from him. The hand-writing wasn’t familiar, but she never saw much of Jack’s handwriting since most work-related stuff was typed. She sighed and moved back into dream land. Lucy and Tara exchanged a knowing look.

Back at the apartment, Lucy and Sue were making dinner together. Inevitably, the topic of the letters arose. Sue, of course, had expected Lucy to bring it up, even though the mail hadn’t arrived yet. “So can I see the last one? I mean, I know Jack’s handwriting pretty well. I’m sure I could tell if it was his,” Lucy told her roommate.
Sue tried to frown. “No, you may not! And why do you and Tara both think they’re from Jack? I have other male acquaintances.”
"But that DEA guy, of course, is out of the picture, and so is David.” Lucy paused and studied her friend. “Isn’t he?”
Sue shrugged, putting on a mask of indifference. “I’m not really sure. He has been for a while, but couldn’t this be his way of trying to get back into my life?” Sue really didn’t know what to think. She wanted it to be Jack, but she just wasn’t sure.
“Girl, if those letters aren’t from Jack, he should’ve thought of it. Have you seen the way he looks at you? He’s in love and doesn’t even know it! Or maybe he does know and doesn’t want to act on it because he’s afraid how you’ll take it. Because you’ve never shown him that you know you’re meant for each other…” Lucy hinted.
“Luce!” Sue glared at Lucy’s hint that she should tell Jack she was attracted to him when she wasn’t even sure of much of anything in her life right now, much less her feelings for Jack.
“Come on! Everyone except you two knows you’re perfect for each other. Even Myles knows it!” Lucy informed Sue.
“Lucy, even if I thought Jack and I were perfect for each other, that doesn’t I would make the first move by any means! It also doesn’t mean he’s the one sending the letters. It could very well be David or someone else. David might want to be back in my life now.” She thought for a moment. The letters seemed like they might even be David’s style. David knew she loved chocolate. He had always been so nice anyway, maybe it was just as well.

It's a short one but i think you'll enjoy it.....
===========================
After eating dinner and watching a chick flick with Lucy, Sue settled down on her bed to read the letter, which had finally arrived with the rest of the mail. She tore it open eargerly. Two slips of paper fell out. She picked up one of them to read, but it was, as far as she could distinguish, just a jumble of letters, so she started reading the other one, which was a very short message. It said, “Sue, the other paper is in code. Your message is in that, once you decode it.”
She frowned at the mysterious message and set to work on the other message.
She tried several different codes, but none of them seemed to work. Finally she realized she could take one of the three-letter words that seemed to fit where her name might go, and figure out how to make the letters into her name. After a few minutes the code had been cracked. It took her several more minutes to decode the whole piece of paper, and she leaned back against her pillows to read it, absently stroking Levi. “Sue,” it said, “This message, with the hidden code, represents all of your amazing hidden talents. You skate and you play the piano, along with your special skill of reading lips. You have so many unexpected attributes that no one would suspect you had. You are an incredible person, Sue. You care so much for other people with so much less concern for your own condition. Even the fact that you chose Levi to be your hearing dog, despite his previous problems, shows that you see more in people--or animals—than meets other people’s eyes. You have a remarkable intuition. You are truly a gift to all of us from God.”
She leaned back all the way onto her pillows. It had to be from Jack. He had mentioned all of her ‘hidden talents’ before. He had seemed amazed at her singing, though. Surely he would have mentioned that… Oh well, it had to be him, she was convinced of it. She decided she should let him know she knew it was him, since she now knew that he was attracted to her, if these letters said anything at all. Sue and Levi curled up together on the bed, trying to figure out how she should tell Jack there was no need to be a ‘secret’ admirer anymore.

Sue was back at her desk, modifying her plan. The guys were out on interviews for their new case, and were likely to be gone all day. She decided she would leave a note on Jack’s desk, telling him she had to leave before he got back, but could he please come over tonight and review something with her? Lucy was still going to her grandmother’s house, so she was clear on that aspect. She had figured out how she would tell him she shared his feelings. All she could do now was wait and hope that he came.
Later…
Levi jumped on Sue, alerting her to the fact that the doorbell had rung. She slowly walked to the door, nervous about what she had planned to go on. She was wearing a pair of light blue jeans and a t-shirt. She had considered wearing something sexier, something that might impress and surprise Jack, but, since she was going to be asking him about the case first, it would probably better to look normal. She finally opened the door after Jack had knocked several more times.
“Hi Jack, thanks for coming. Do you want something to drink?” She asked him.
“Ah, water’s fine. Thank you.”
“Make yourself at home. I’ll be right there.”
She joined him in the living room a few minutes later, carrying two waters, one of which she handed to Jack. She picked up a folder off the coffee table and opened it, proceeding to ask him a few simple questions about their case. After several minutes, she had run out of things to ask. “Jack,” she said, “the case wasn’t the only reason I asked you to come.”
He raised his eyebrows, indicating for her to go on.
“I wanted to tell you, I think we’ve wasted a lot of time.”
Jack frowned. “What do you mean? On the case? It just came in yesterday, and we’ve been working it since--”
“No, not the case. Us!”
Now Jack looked even more confused. “Sue, I don’t know…”
“Jack, you don’t need to hide it anymore. I know just how you feel! I’ve felt this attraction for you ever since I first set my eyes on you. And now it’s becoming more obvious that you share my attraction.”
Jack sat frozen for a minute. Was this really true? Had Sue really just admitted that she was attracted to him? And somehow she knew his feelings too. Was he really making it that obvious?
Sue, meanwhile, was frozen as well. She had obviously made a mistake. He hadn’t sent the letters. He didn’t feel anything for her. She was mortified.
“Sue,” he said. She braced herself. “I…I don’t know how you knew. I’ve been attracted to you ever since you came. But there was Allie, and the policy…You have no idea how much I want to act on my feelings, but…I don’t know.”
Sue was breathing again, but barely. He really was attracted to her! “Jack—the policy will take care of itself if we really want this. If you want to act on this, then I’m open to it as well.”
Their eyes met for an instant. Two hearts stopped for what seemed like an eternity. Two minds came together. “If you say so,’’ he whispered huskily as he leaned toward her and their lips met.

Sue didn’t know how long they sat there on the couch, but she knew it was quite a while before they were interrupted by insistent knocking on the door. Jack pulled back and let her know what was going on. “Lucy must’ve forgotten her key or something,” she said regretfully.
“You got any idea what you’re going to tell in explanation to what I’m doing here?” He asked with a slight smile.
“Oh, I already told her you would be coming over for a while to talk about the case. Don’t worry.” She thought for a minute. “I guess I’ll have to tell her eventually,” she said, wrinkling her nose. More knocking came from the door. Jack motioned for her to go get it while he went to the kitchen to wash their cups and find a snack.
Sue hurried for the door and opened it. “Sorry Luce, I--” She broke off abruptly, seeing who was on the other side.

"MOM!!!! What are you doing here?" Sue was totally taken aback at the sight of her mother, accompanied by a suitcase and another small carry-on looking bag.
"Well, sweet heart, your father had to go out of town to visit his sister, and i couldn't go along, so I figured I'd come surprise you!" Her mother said, still standing outside the apartment, since Sue hadn't stepped aside yet.
"Oh."
Jack came up behind Sue, wondering why she was keeping Lucy outside. He stopped short upon seeing Mrs. Thomas. "Uh...Hi! I'm Jack Hudson, we met when you came to visit."
"Oh, yes, I remember you," Mrs. Thomas said, eyes a bit wide at the fact that he was at Sue's apartment.
"Uh, Sue?" Jack said gently. "Are you going to let your mother come inside?"
Sue snapped out of the daze she seemed to have been in. "Yeah, um...yeah... uh... come on in, Mom." She showed her mother in, offering her something to drink.
Her mother declined, and Jack quickly said, "Uh, I'll be going now. Sue, I'll check up on that case, and answer your questions when I see you tomorrow," trying to remember what she had asked him before they had confessed their feelings. "I'll see you tomorrow. Nice seeing you, Mrs. Thomas." He hurried out the door.
"What was Jack doing here?" Sue's mother asked the second the door closed.
"Mom, didn't you hear him? I had questions about a case I need to ask him. He and the guys left on interviews all afternoon so I couldn't ask him at work. And even if it were another reason, remember what we talked about?"
Her mother sighed. "I know, Sue. And it is your life. I've known that for a long time, it's just been so hard to accept. But you know I like Jack a lot, don't you?"
Sue rolled her eyes. "I'll take your bags in to my room."
