I think the police jumped the gun when arresting Jack. They would need hard evidence and probable cause. I have a feeling their careers are going to be short lived.

‘Bureau lawyer is with Jack ……… Tara stay here, go with Sue when she’s moved……….. Bobby go see Jack, Luce you and Myles go to the gym, get something for Tara to work on, when you’ve got something Luce take over from Tara, D chase up the vet and local hospitals…….Ok people let’s move, the idiots were right about one thing, he won’t last long when they find out he’s a Fed………..‘ Ted gave out the orders which were swiftly obeyed.

At Metro Bobby stared at his friend who seemed to have aged 10 years, ‘orange is not your colour Sparky………’

Jack shrugged, ‘I asked for blue but they said they were out…….. any news on Sue?’

‘Still in OR, as soon as we know you’ll know……. we’re chasing up all the leads we have…….. we’ll get you out of here mate……. but promise me you’ll tell her……………’

‘I will……….. I did……. I don’t know what’s worse, being accused of hurting her or not being with her…………lawyer says it’s circumstantial at best but I won’t make bail…….. they think I’ll go back and finish her off……………… I’m in solitary for my own safety…….. I keep hoping I’ll wake up from the nightmare but instead it’s getting deeper and darker………’

Feeling totally helpless Bobby tried to sound positive, ‘we will get him Jack, then we’ll get the drongos……… hang in there mate………’

Rising to his feet Jack nodded his thanks and headed back to his cell.

Bobby shook his head, ‘I know a guy in the lab, I’ll ask him for any reports to be copied to me………. I’ll go let Jack know…….. ’

‘Not great…….. they think I made it up……… they’ve found her blood and hair on my clothes……. My fingerprints are all over the place……… I told them I’ve hugged her wearing that suit…that I checked her pulse, put a blanket over her, held her hand……. they’re fixed on me being guilty and they won’t try and find Cowley………. Nicholls told me the prisoners know I’m an agent, know what I’m accused of…………..’

‘Jack, they can’t get you in solitary………..’

‘You and I both know they can get me anywhere……… ‘

Jack stood and walked away, feeling totally defeated.

Chapter 9

The following morning it was wet and cold, a grim spring morning, it felt as if the sun had gone on strike.

‘Luce has identified Cowley, Tara has run it through the computer……. Sue is still out of it and Luce has nothing more to tell us……. as far as she was aware Sue had never been to Cowleys’ place………’ Ted updated the team and Bobby filled them in on his visit to Jack.

‘Bobby, get over there, update him………..’

His heart sank as he saw Jack walk in with a black eye and a heavily bruised face, his mind flashed back to the time Darcy was in prison, she tried unsuccessfully to put on a brave face and Jack wasn’t doing any better…… Bobby didn’t dare think about the bruising he couldn’t see.

‘Slipped in the shower, Bobby…………’ Jack explained quietly, noticing Bobby’s raised eyebrows.

‘Prisoner or officer?’

Jack shrugged, ‘turned round, took a few punches………. I hit the floor,,,,,,,,, took a bit more………., when I got up there was no-one there…… anything on Sue………..?’

Bobby updated Jack watching him rub the bruises; he’d aged another 10 years since last night and when Jack left he noticed his guarded walk.

Returning to the pen he updated Ted, ‘we need to get him out, he won’t last much longer………’

‘OK, we’ll use the heart attack……… get him into a hospital……….. leave it to me……….’

‘Guys we’ve got a name, Terry Davis……… has a conviction for rape and other arrests which didn’t go to court…….. no address as yet…….’ D brandished a file.

‘There is evidence that Levi was tied up at some time ……… he appears to have chewed through the leash which was tied to the table ……… nothing from the hospitals……. they all have his photo…….’ Myles informed them.

Ted entered the pen, ‘Jack is now in the hospital…….. I pulled some strings, his medical showed up a ‘problem with his heart……….’ hospital has taken photos of the bruises……….’

‘Can we go see him?’ Tara asked.

‘Yeah, but not too long or too many, don’t want Metro getting suss and sending him back to the cells………’

‘Can they do that?’ Bobby asked.

‘Yeah……… if they find out the ‘doc’ was an agent with a broken EKG machine………’ Ted answered quietly. ‘Don’t ask……… then you have deniability………if there are any problems we tell DCPD we think he’s guilty and it’s now a bureau case………. we can keep him in our lock up…….. or the hospital………’

After the team had left, Ted and Bobby changed into hospital scrubs and entered Jacks’ room before wheeling him along the corridor to Sue, updating him as they went.

‘Take as long as you like, mate……… we’ll be outside…….’

The relief in his face and voice was palpable, ‘thanks guys……… I thought I’d be pushing up the daisies by now………’

‘Don’t think we’d get rid of you that easily, Sparky…………..’ Bobby had a broad grin across his face; he hoped above all that Jack would take the opportunity to talk to Sue when she woke up.

CATH!!!!!!!! I'm breathing irratically, talking to a computer screen, brain is overactive, and I'm just FREAKING OUT!!!!!!! They arrested Jack??!?!?!?!?! I think they're not really DCPD, they're some bad guys who got really good fake IDs. Um, I noticed something when they said what jack was being arrested for: ATTEMPTED RAPE!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Cath, what are you doing to them???? I think I'm a bit on the hysterical side!!

The good thing here is that they got Jack out of that prison and to the hospital. At least D feels that they can keep Jack under bureau juristiction.

Chapter 10

Sitting beside Sue Jack reached out and held her hand, tears pouring down his face as he gazed at her. Her face was swollen and bruised as a result of the attack and surgery, a bandage wrapped around her head where they’d stitched the cut.

‘Sue sweetheart …………. I’m sorry……… hang in there please, Sue……… I love you……… I should have told you years ago…….. I guess you can’t hear me but I hope and pray you hear me in your soul…………’

Between his tears, Jack kissed her hand, squeezing it gently and smoothing out her ruffled hair.

Unable to speak through his tears Jack began to sign on her hand and fingerspell, taking care not to aggravate the bruises. Gazing at them he winced, imagining some of what she must have endured and began to pray for her, praying too that she would forgive him for letting her down so badly.

Hearing the door open Jack wiped his eyes and checked his watch, he’d been there for 3 hours yet it only felt like seconds.

‘Sorry Sparky, Tweedledum and Tweedledee are on the way up……….. I have a snitch in reception…Tara is down there…..’ he grinned at Jacks’ raised eyebrows.

‘LOVE YOU’ he signed leaning forward and kissing her tenderly on the head before he reluctantly left.

‘Thanks for this guys……. at least I can sleep tonight without wondering if I’ll be dead in the morning………. worse solitary I’ve ever known…….’

‘Jack we’ll get Davis, get you and Sue out of here then you and I will go see the chief of police and get these clowns…………..’ Ted promised, having turned a blind eye to the kiss, knowing he needed to talk to the high-ups.

‘Is there anything I can do, I’ll go stir crazy in here………….’

‘Write out a statement…………. about Sue, see if there is anything new you can give us……. and Tweedledum and Tweedledee………..’ Ted grinned at the names Bobby had used, far more polite than some of the suggestions the team had made.

Hearing a knock at the door Jacks’ heart sank as he saw Giles and Nicholls enter.

About to open their mouths they caught sight of Ted and changed their minds.

‘Why are you here? He is a patient with a heart condition……… if you wish to interview him you go through the bureau lawyer…….. DO YOU UNDERSTAND…………….?’

They nodded and left quickly as Jack breathed a sigh of relief, at this rate he would have a heart attack, he longed to be beside Sue, to hold her in his arms and kiss her senseless. He’d had enough of being ‘turtle Jack’, when she woke up he was going to confess his love and hope Bobby and Luce were right.

‘Jack mate we need to head back………. We’ll tell Tara and she can take you in later OK?’

‘Thanks Crash…… I owe you both………..’

He turned to stare out the window as they left, the rain outside matched his gloomy mood, if she didn’t come through this it wouldn’t matter to him if they didn’t catch Davis. Feeling the tears trickling down his cheeks Jack furiously rubbed them away, thankful neither Bobby nor Ted had seen them.

Walking to the exit Ted pulled out his phone, ‘Chief Manwaring please……….. Ted Garret, FBI Supervisor…………………………………… thank you.’

Bobby breathed a sigh of relief, he hadn’t said anything but he was sure he’d read resignation in Jacks eyes, ‘mud sticks……… no smoke without fire…….’ Jack would tell him, if they couldn’t nail Davis and Sue didn’t make it, OPR would be all over him like a rash and some people would doubt him………..

‘We have to nail him Ted……….I don’t trust these guys, they have a hidden agenda’

Chapter 11

Insisting on Tara going home that evening Jack sat beside Sue late into the night, holding her hand and willing her to wake up, signing or spelling into her hand, aware of the almost continuous trickle of tears which tracked down his cheeks and pooled on the bed.

Finally he drifted off to sleep, laying his head on the bed, overcome by exhaustion and emotions.

As the light began to filter through the window Jack stirred in his seat, his bruised and aching back protesting loudly. Standing gingerly he did a few stretches and rubbed his back before sitting beside her again, lulled into sleep by the steady spring rain which was falling.

Waking an hour or so later he lent over and kissed her gently on the lips before talking to her. He knew she didn’t hear but it helped him to relieve some of his feelings and his signing wasn’t up to what he wanted to say.

‘Sue………. I love you…….. I have for so long and I want you to know that…….. I want you to know that I will always regret not telling you sooner……… I am so sorry for what Cowley did to you…….. Sue, when you wake up I want us to date…….. properly date, not these pathetic excuses I come up with……….. I know I’ve been a jerk, a wimp, a wuss, a turtle…….. the list is endless……an idiot…… for so long, but I love you Sue……. I don’t just want to date you, I want to marry you, to have a future with you……… children and grandchildren……. to grow old with you………….to hold you in my arms every morning and every night…….’

Jack could feel the tears streaming down his face as he prayed for the chance to bare his soul to the woman he had loved for so long and gently placed her hand on the bed to allow him to wipe them away.

Still unable to speak he began to practice signing all that he wanted to say, getting stuck on some of the words. He couldn’t even remember the sign for ‘marry’ ………. ‘what was it?’ He thought it was the gesture for slipping a ring on, but it could be totally different.

Jack is making me so sad...I hope things would start to get better for them and I don't think he needs that sign...all he needs is a ring, Sue will understand!
