Let me start out by saying NO CHARACTER WILL ACTUALLY DIE. Some of the same characters from Have Faith will return. There is some angst, but hang with me. Everything will work out in the end. Enjoy

Wednesday, November 15

“NOOOOOOOOOO!” Jack’s scream split the morning sky as he ran to cradle the crumpled form to his chest. She lay on the pavement, blood beginning to spread across her blouse under the Kevlar vest.

Jack pulled her into his lap, staring down into her eyes, the light beginning to drain from them. “Sue, Sue, don’t leave me! Sue, hang on! Please fight!” he yelled at her, knowing she couldn’t hear him. Yet, somewhere in her soul, she did, hanging on by a thread of faith.

Jack’s body shook as his sobs joined the screaming of the siren, “Their on their way, sweetheart. Hang on.”

“They’re coming, Sparky,” Bobby Manning said, running to his best friend’s side. “Don’t let her go. They’re coming.”

Twenty minutes later, Jack, Bobby and the rest of the team sat or paced in the surgery waiting room, awaiting news about the heart of their team. Her beautiful spirit and loving smile had captured their hearts, most especially, Jack’s. She was his teammate, the light of his life, his wife. He had made her Mrs. Sue Hudson three months ago. Now, in the blink of an eye, she might be torn from him.

“I told her to stay in the surveillance van” Jack wailed, great sobs still shaking his shoulders. “But that big heart of hers would let her sit their and watch that little boy caught in the cross fire. She had to rescue him.” Jack slumped to the sofa, quieting his tears by clenching his jaw and his fists.

Lucy sat down beside him, putting a comforting arm around him. “Jack, it’s not your fault. Why don’t we go down to the chapel and pray…”

Jack jumped to his feet. “Pray! Pray to who…God! There is no God! There can’t be a God! If there was a God then my WIFE would not be laying on an operating table fighting for her life! What kind of God would let a sweet creature like Sue be injured like that!” All color drained from his face as he slid to the floor, great sobs echoing from his chest.

Lucy didn’t know what to do. She had never seen someone lose his faith in front of her eyes, but that is exactly what had happened. She joined the rest of the team, Myles holding out his arms for her. They all huddled together, Tara and Bobby, Myles and Lucy, D and Donna, tears staining their face as they looked at their teammate…their treasured friend. They wanted to console, but he was inconsolable.

D was the first one to say anything after the scene that had unfolded before them. “Bobby, see if you can get in touch with Deanne Bray. Myles, you and Tara go see if you can round up some coffee. Let’s hold off on calling her parents until we have know what we are facing. I have a long distance call to make.”

Stepping into the corridor, D dialed the now familiar number on his cell phone. “Kevin, it’s D. Sue’s been shot and it doesn’t look good. She and Jack need you…”

“I’m leaving for the airport now. I’ll be there in two hours.” Kevin said, whispering a quick prayer of intercession for his friends.

“Good. And Kevin, bring Kate.” D snapped his cell phone shut. He let out a pent up breath and then his frustrations on the nearest object…the wall.

It's a good thing you put that note up at the top, otherwise I'd be pretty worried about Sue's condition, but the proverb you chose certainly gives us some hope. Great start, Kim! biggrin.gif

As D came back into the waiting room, Myles pulled him to one side, handing him a cup of coffee. “Well, who did you call?”

“Kevin Paul.” D answered, a deep crease forming on his forehead. Kevin had been there for him before. He had been there for Sue and Jack as well. As a matter of fact, Jack and Sue would probably still be dancing around one another, instead of married, if it hadn’t been for Kevin Paul and his family. In fact, Kevin had married Jack and Sue at the First United Methodist Church in Talladega, Alabama three months ago…today. D suddenly remembered that today was Jack and Sue’s three month anniversary. Silent tears began to slide down his cheeks.

Myles awkwardly placed a comforting hand on D’s shoulder. “I know,” he said quietly. “The date was not lost on me either. Is Kevin coming alone?”

“No, I told him to bring Kate.” D said simply, a slight smile tugging his haggard face. Kate was Kevin’s older sister. She was one woman who spoke her mind, regardless of who she was speaking to. She had spunk, she had fire, she was feisty and she had one of the biggest, most loving hearts in the world. Together, Kevin and Kate were quite the team.

“Good. I think that feisty southern woman may just be what Jack needs,” Myles replied, a small smile lifting the corners of his mouth. He knew that if Kate were not already spoken for, he would have liked the idea of courting her. Alas, Kate was very much smitten with her fiancé, Todd Hunter. Still, there was someone else who was beginning to tug at his heart strings. Myles eyes traveled to the couch were Lucy was again trying to get Jack to talk. “Now there is a lady who could give Kate a run for her money.” Myles thought to himself.

Bobby walked back into the waiting room, his hands shoved deep in his pockets. “Deanne will be here as soon as she can. She has to wait from someone to take over her pre-school deaf theatre class. I still can’t believe this is happening,” he said, tears starting down his cheeks. He felt helpless. His best friend’s heart was breaking. The woman whom he had come to love as a sister was fighting for her life. “Life is just not fair.”

Tara wrapped her arms around Bobby’s waist, pulling him into a warm embrace. Bobby turned, placing his arms around her shoulders. “Life may not be fair, but God is. I remember a preacher saying ‘There are no miracles for those who have no faith in them.’ That’s what I have been thinking since we arrived. We have to have faith that God is in control and still in the miracle-making business. We have to have the kind of faith that Sue has.”

“But what do you do when someone has lost that faith?” Lucy asked, joining the group.

Myles put his arm around her shoulders. “You just have to double your faith’s effort. Don’t worry, Lucy. Jack will come around. He hasn’t really lost his faith. He has just misplaced it.”

The team turned and looked at Jack. He looked drawn, pale and lonely. He felt as if someone had punched him in the stomach. How could something like this happen? He just couldn’t lose her. He couldn’t survive life without her by his side. He was barely aware of the hand on his shoulder and the weight on someone sitting beside him.

“Jack,” Myles said gently. “I know it’s hard right now, but I need you to listen to me.”

Jack turned his eyes to his teammate. Myles was shocked at the dark emptiness of those eyes. His voice trembled slightly as he continued, “Miracles still happen, Jack. You just have to believe that they can happen in your life. I know you are not in a place right now to really hear what I am saying, but I want you to hold onto this one thought. The rest of us are going to hold onto that belief. We are going to hold onto it until you are ready to hold on to it as well.”

Jack withdrew his eyes from Myles’ face. He nodded glumly, but somewhere in his soul, there was a slight flicker of…hope.

Okay guys, let me know if this is getting a little too "preachy." Kate can get carried away, sometimes.

The minutes turned into hours. The doctors updated Sue’s condition from time to time. It was always the same, “She is still in surgery. She’s holding her own, but we just don’t know.” Lucy had offered Jack a sandwich that Tara and Bobby had brought from the cafeteria. He had refused it. He had refused to talk. He just sat, sometimes upright staring blankly at the wall and sometimes with his head in his hands.

Jack became aware of movement in the doorway of the waiting room. He looked up, expecting yet another doctor. Instead, he saw Kevin and Kate standing there. He stood and started to speak, but only a slight sob passed his lips as his face dissolved in another wave of emotion. He found himself burying his head into Kevin’s shoulder, the other man helping him back down on the sofa. Jack clung to Kevin in desperation, his loud sobs echoing around the room, bringing everyone to tears. Kate sat on the other side of Jack, gently rubbing his back. Neither she nor Kevin said a word, letting Jack mourn in silence. Finally, his emotions spent, Jack sat up, wiping his eyes with the back of his hands.

“Kevin, Kate how did…” Jack asked, his question dying with the return of the lump to his throat.

Kate took Jack’s hand in hers. “D called us. We were on the next flight up here.”

“No question asked,” Kevin added, placing a comforting hand on Jack’s shoulder. “D said you and Sue needed us. That’s all he had to say.”

Jack nodded as Kate questioned the rest of the team, “Any news?”

“She’s holding her own, but they still aren’t sure,” Myles said, running a tired hand through his hair.

“Jack,” Kevin started. “You just have to have faith…”

Jack jumped to his feet and whirled to face his southern friends. “Have faith!” he shouted. “Faith in what?! The one person I have faith in is lying on an operating table fighting for her life!” He turned from his friends, his body trembling with rage. Kevin had never seen eyes that looked as empty as Jack’s, yet there was a flicker. Kevin grinned slightly. Jack may think he has lost his faith in God, Kevin thought, but God hasn’t lost his faith in Jack.

“Why doesn’t everyone go down to the chapel. We’ll stay here with Jack,” Kate said, giving Kevin a reassuring look.

The rest of the team looked reluctant to go. “We’ll come and get you if we hear anything.” Kevin reassured them. He gave D a small wink and said. “Let Kate and me handle Jack alone for a little while.”

Kevin took a deep breath, sending a prayer heavenward for the right words to say to the broken man quietly sobbing. He watched as Kate went to Jack. He watched as she took Jack’s hand in hers, not saying a word, just being there. He watched as Jack held tightly to Kate’s hand. Kate stood stoically, being the anchor in Jack’s storm of emotion. He hadn’t told her often enough, but he was proud of his sister. He walked over to Jack and place a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Jack, I know you don’t want to hear this right now. So, I am not going to talk to you, I am going to talk to your soul. I know you are blaming God and yourself for what has happened to Sue. But it’s no one’s fault. God knows you’re hurting. He knows you are doubting everything you know in your heart to be true. I am here to tell you that God will not leave you or Sue. He will be standing right there beside you. And, when you are ready, He will take you into his arms and give you the comfort you seek.”

Jack turned and gave Kevin a dark glare. “Don’t you dare bring God into this,” he hissed. “If God is the loving, compassionate God you talk about, then we wouldn’t be here!”

Kevin caught the look in Kate’s eyes. It was one he had seen there before. She had compassion for the man standing beside her, but there was a look of irritation in her eyes as well. Kevin knew she had had enough and it was time for Jack to come to his senses. Kevin couldn’t help but grin, despite the seriousness of the situation. Uh-oh, Jack, he thought. You’ve had it now. Kate’s not going to put up with much of this nonsense.

She took Jack by the arms, turning him to face her. “You listen to me Jack Hudson,” she said, her voice firm but her expression filled with compassion. “I don’t want to hear any more of this nonsense. You know as well as I do that God is faithful and compassionate. He is not going to leave you or Sue. You may not feel His presence right now, but let me assure you He is not the one who has moved. He is still standing right there beside you, waiting to wrap you in His grace. He will give you anything you ask for, Jack. God is still in the miracle-making business. But you have a part to play in this as well. There are no miracles for those that have no faith in them. You have to believe that there is a miracle waiting for you and Sue.”

“She’s right,” a soft voice added from the doorway. Deanne Bray had watched Kate’s little speech from the doorway of the waiting room. Luckily, Kate had been facing the door when she spoke with Jack. She walked over to Jack, gave him a gentle hug, then led him to the sofa.

“Jack, you have got to have faith,” Deanne said softly, her grandmotherly face glowing with inner strength.

“I don’t think I have any anymore,” Jack whispered.

“Oh yes, you do,” Deanne continued. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a mustard seed and handed it to Jack. “It says in the Matthew 17:20 ‘I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move.’ Jack, I know you have at least this much faith,” she said, pressing the mustard seed tightly into his hand. “Just hold onto that faith and pray.”

Kate took Jack’s free hand in hers, “Come on, Jack. You can do this. Just open up your heart. Tell God how you are hurting inside. Tell Him that you need Him to help ease that hurt and increase your faith. Then, ask Him for the miracle. He will provide it.”

Jack clasped the mustard seed tighter. He slipped to his knees beside the sofa, still clinging to Kate’s hand. Deanne and Kate both moved to kneel beside him, Deanne placing a loving hand on his shoulder. Kevin moved to stand behind Jack and placed his hand on Jack’s other shoulder. Silently, Deanne, Kevin and Kate prayed for Jack’s faith as Jack spoke his prayer to the room. “God, I am so sorry I haven’t given You the credit You deserve. I am so sorry that I didn’t trust You to keep Sue safe. It was You who gave Sue to me to love. It is You that can take Sue from me. But please, God, please don’t take her from me. It would be like taking the breath from my body. I have faith that You will provide what I ask. So, God, I’m asking. Keep Sue safe and restore her to me. Please grant me that miracle”

“Mr. Hudson,” a low voice called from the door. Jack, Kevin and Kate turned towards the door. Deanne, sensing Jack’s movement followed their gaze. “Mr. Hudson, I’m Dr. Gustafson. I just wanted to give you an update on your wife.”

Jack rose from his kneeling position. His knees felt as if they would give way, if not for the strength of the three peoples hands holding him up. “Yes, doctor,” he said shakily.

A broad grin crossed the doctor’s haggard face. “She’s going to be just fine. The bullet broke a couple of ribs, pierced her lung. It stopped millimeters from her heart, but didn’t even break a blood vessel. We were able to remove it easily. Everything is going to be just fine. They are moving her to a room. If you will come with me, I’ll take you to her.”

“Thank you, God,” Jack sent a prayer of relief and thanks heavenward. “Thank you doctor,” he said, shaking Dr. Gustafson’s hand and following him to the door, stopping to turn and look at Kate and Deanne.

“Go on, Jack,” Kate said, waving him on with her hand. “We’ll go down to the chapel and tell the others.” Kate smiled as a big, happy grin came to Jack’s face. They heard his jubilant shouts all the way down the hall.

Bobby and Tara sat together in a pew at the front of the chapel. The events of the last few hours had left them drained. Tara was beating herself up for not stopping Sue from exiting the surveillance van. Things were going so fast, she hadn’t noticed that Sue was gone until she heard Jack scream into her earpiece. A cold fear gripped her heart. What if Sue were…Tara quickly tried to push the negative thoughts from her mind. God, please take care of Sue. Jack, well all of us would be so lost if she was taken from us. Please don’t take her. I know you are in control, so please give us this miracle.

Bobby sat gazing at Tara. His mind kept replaying today’s events. He had been best friends with Jack for over ten years and he had never seen Jack hurting this bad. Jack’s screams echoed over and over in his head. They mixed with the other thoughts that went through his mind every time he looked at Tara. What if it were Tara lying on that operating table? He loved that woman, but could his heart take being married to her and watching her walk into potential danger every day? He fingered the velvet box that he had recently started carrying in his pocket, waiting for that perfect moment. God, please take care of Sue and Jack. Sue’s faith in you is so strong, let Jack find just a little piece of that faith. And, if you aren’t to busy, Mate, how about sending me a sign about what I should do next.

Myles sat behind Lucy, watching her face as she wept softly, her lips moving in silent, but earnest prayer. He wanted another chance. He had been such a fool. Sue had helped him see the error of his ways and even started him down a new, straighter path. Sue, the thought of her brought a flood of tears to his eyes. God, you have to realize that Sue is the heart and soul of our team. She is also Jack’s heart and soul. Please don’t take her from us. Our lives would never be the same. Please give us this miracle.

She’s my best friend, God. Please don’t take her from me. Who else would I go shopping with, talk with, ask advice from? Don’t take her away from us, please.
Lucy’s heart was breaking, but she refused to lose faith.

D sat silently, watching the members of his team dealing with the pain. He remembered back a few years, just before Sue had joined the team. He had been temporarily reassigned to a team in Atlanta, Georgia. He had quickly developed a friendship with Tom Johnson, the team leader. It was a drug bust gone bad. D had been in the line of fire until Tom had pushed him to the ground, taking the bullet that had been meant for him. Tom had lost his life, D had lost his friend and his faith. He blamed himself, cursing God, until the day he had happened upon Kevin Paul. Kevin had been a seminary student at Emory University. D had found himself in the chapel at the Candler School of Theology. He remember Kevin slipping into the pew beside him, introducing himself. Kevin was a very jovial person, cracking little jokes. It was the first time D had smiled in days. Kevin had finally convinced D to join him for a cup of coffee. They had spent hours talking. By the end of the day, D had found his faith. D knew that God had put Kevin in that place just for him. He and Kevin had been friends since, Kevin acting as D’s unofficial spiritual advisor. He had saved D a lot of heartache on many occasions. God, give Kevin the words to say to Jack, words of comfort. Be with Sue and the surgeons as they work to save her. Give her back to us. Grant us a miracle.

Kevin, Kate and Deanne entered the chapel. Kevin quickly assessed the environment in the room. He looked at the two couples sitting on the pews in front of them. Two were sitting close together, obviously attracted to one another. One was sitting behind another. From Myles’ body language, Kevin could tell that he wanted to take Lucy in his arms. He wondered if he and Kate should put on their matchmaking caps, now that Sue seemed to be out of danger. He grinned at the thought of binding two more couples together.

Kate cleared her throat to get everyone’s attention. All of them stood, looking expectantly at the three them. They waited with baited breath as Kate broke into a wide smile. “She is going to be just fine!”

The chapel, though usually a quiet refuge for a weary soul, rang with shouts of joy. The team hugged one another, clapped each other on the back and gave high fives to all in the vicinity.

“When can we see her?” Bobby asked, taking Tara’s hand in his.

“The doctor didn’t say,” Deanne said, “But they are taking her to a room. Jack’s
with her now.”

“Well let’s go find out.” D said, heading out of the chapel and up the hall.

“Give her a little time to get settled.” Dr. Gustafson said firmly. “I know she is going to want to see you all. Give her a couple of hours, then you can all see her.”

The team watched Jack from the doorway as he settled himself into a chair by her bed. He looked exhausted. His clothes were stained with her blood. Yet, there was something peaceful about him.

Great couple of posts Kim!!!

My advice:

Bobby live is to short - marry her for heavens sake, Tara you know how head-strong Sue is (it is not one of her most adearing traits now is it?) you would not of been able to stop her, so stop beating yourself up about it and say yes when Bobby asks you!! Myles, sigh.gif yes you where an idiot, but look how much you and Lucy have grown in that time, talk to her and see if she wants to have a go again. Lucy let go of the hurt as you have grown past that now and holding on to it is just slightly petty, and you know that Myles has changed in the last few years give it another go.

It was nice to see how D met Kevin as there was only a clue in Have Faith.

I think Kevin and Kate are going to have a tough time matchmaking with this lot!!! Oh well it will be a challenge, which I am sure they like! tongue.gif

Jack’s heart stopped when he saw her laying the hospital bed. She was so still, so fragile. Although he thought he had cried until he had nothing left, he was wrong. A fresh wave of tears filled his eyes. He made his way to the bed, pulling a chair as close as he could. He took her hand in his, tears spilling on the blanket. He raised his head towards heaven, trusting that mustard seed faith would hold. “God, please keep Sue safe. Please let her wake up.” Then, as if some invisible force had wrapped his body in a cocoon of hope, he felt suddenly at peace. Despite seeing his beloved wife lying in a hospital bed, he knew everything was going to be just fine. His mustard seed faith had grown by a few millimeters.

As Jack rested his head on the edge of the bed, he felt someone touch his shoulder. Looking up, he saw a nurse standing there with an overnight bag. “Mr. Hudson, Kate Paul asked me to give this to you. If you would like, you can use the shower in there,” the nurse said, indicating the door at the foot of Sue’s bed. Seeing the hesitation in Jack’s face, the nurse touched his arm, adding softly, “It’s going to be a while before she wakes up. You’ll have time to get cleaned up and changed.”

“Thank you,” Jack said, standing and taking the bag from the nurse. He made his way into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. He fumbled with the zipper on the bag, finally getting it to move. Laying on top of the clean clothes, soap and shaving supplies, was an envelope with Jack’s name on it.

Dear Jack,
I grabbed an extra bag on the way out of my house this morning following D’s phone call. I packed in some essentials, including some of Todd’s clothes. Trust me, he won’t mind. No matter what has happened, remember to take care of yourself, too. You won’t do anyone, especially Sue, any good if you let yourself get run down. Remember, when the burden seems too heavy to bear, hand it over to God. He is strong enough to take your burden and still lift you up.
Love,
Kate

Jack smiled to himself. The resourcefulness of his southern friends never ceased to amaze him. He knew with certainty, that no matter what problems came their way, he and Sue would always be able to count on their family. Their family just happened to include five FBI employees from Washington, D.C. and a Methodist minister, school teacher, football coach and audiologist from Alabama.

Jack showered and shaved quickly. He smiled again at the clothes Kate had placed in the bag. She had placed an ASD Silent Warriors sweatshirt and football sweatpants in the bag. They made him remember the short time he had been an assistant football coach three months before. They were good memories.

Feeling refreshed, Jack re-entered the room, taking his position in the chair by Sue’s bed. He reached out and clasped her hand, laying his head on the edge of the bed. He didn’t know how long he had slept, but he was keenly aware of a warm touch on his cheek. Slowly, he opened his eyes and raised his head to gaze into the warmth of Sue’s face, her eyes open and clear, her hand gently caressing his cheek.

“Sue,” he choked, a fresh flood of tears streaming down his face. She was awake, she was alive, she was…there.
