Chapter 14
Lying in bed he wondered how everything could be so simple when you were young and so complicated when you were older. He admired Ben just going for it and writing a love letter to the girl he was in love with……. and yet he was still wimping and dithering, too afraid of rejection to take the plunge.
He rolled over and stared at the photos on his bedside table, one was of the team, another of Bobby, Wes and him, another of Shep.
Pride of place went to a photo of Sue dancing with him at the Bachelor Auction and a photo from the undercover marriage in which they wore their wedding outfits.
As a lone tear trickled down his face he closed his eyes tightly, loneliness and sadness tugging at his heart.
The Bard had once written ‘the course of true love never did run smooth’ and this was one such course which was decidedly rough, if he hadn’t recruited her to the team he could have asked her out no problem but if they dated and it didn’t work one of them would have left for no good reason.
Punching his pillow he tried to get to sleep, drifting off eventually to dream once more of a life with Sue.
Lying on her bed Sue stared blankly at the ceiling, her thoughts drifting to the letter she had written for Amanda, at 13 years old Amanda had more courage than she would ever have, she was willing to tell the boy how she felt and even arrange a date while Sue was still waiting for Jack to make some kind of move.
Turning over she stared at the photos on her bedside table, there was one of the whole team on a night out after they’d cracked a big case, Donna had joined them that night and they’d had a waiter take their picture. Jack had his arm around her shoulder and she remembered how warm and safe she had felt.
Another photo was of her and Jack at the Bachelor Auction, Darcy had taken it while they were dancing and he was staring into her eyes. Even now she could feel his arms around her, inhale the scent of his aftershave, feel him pull her closer to him.
The last photo was from their undercover marriage, they were in the park by the bureau where they’d had the photos taken, both dressed in their wedding clothes. It had been sweet torture that day, how much did she want all that for real?
Beside the photos was a small box which contained her promise ring. Many years ago she had promised God and herself she would wait until she was married before she made love. Now it seemed like a hollow promise, the only man she wanted to make love with was Jack and it didn’t look as if he was remotely interested in her.
Turning away from the photos silent tears trickled down her face as she pummelled the pillows in a desperate effort to get comfortable so she could sleep.
Drifting off she decided she would ask Amanda how things went and if it was successful then maybe she could pluck up the courage to write a love letter to Jack.

Ok if I am reading this right - Ben and Amanda have got Jack and Sue to write love letters to each other - so this means that two 13 year olds will manage what a team of adults and Jack and Sue cant.

Friday evening Sue returned to her apartment to find the letter. Opening it she was surprised to see what she thought was Jacks’ writing but the letter was unsigned.
As she read the letter tears trickled down her face and she was grateful Luce was out, it was the first love letter she had ever received and it was beautiful. The biggest problem was not knowing what to wear since it only told her to met him at the Monument, although 7 in the evening with Jack would almost certainly mean food so if she wore smart casual she should be fine.
Lying on the bed she read the letter over and over, wondering what else he wanted to say to her.
Her relief that he had finally made a move was palpable, now she would no longer have to second guess and analyse every word or look, even the unspoken words had left her guessing……………

Reading the contents he was stunned, it looked like Sues’ writing but was unsigned. The words it contained were beautiful but he was intrigued to know what else she wanted to tell him.
He was impressed that she had made the first move; in fact he was more than a little ashamed that he had held back so long. Still now he knew her feelings he wasn’t going to waste any more time.
The only thing that confused him was where they were going and what they might be doing.
He figured it would be a fair assumption that they would be eating so he’d go for smart casual dress and if necessary he could dash home and change.
As the time drew nearer to meet they both found their excitement increasing, their pulses racing. Heading out Jack slipped the letter into his inside pocket and bought flowers and a box of the chocolates he knew Sue loved.
Sue slipped her letter into her purse, called Levi and headed out to the cab she had called, assuming Jack would be driving.

Arriving at the Monument they were oblivious to the two pairs of eyes watching events unfold.
‘Hi…….. I ……… err…….. I got your letter, Sue……… and I …….. errr…….. wanted to say thank you……….. and I …… err………. I loved it……… it was beautiful………….and I'm sorry I waited for you to make the first move.............’
‘My letter?’ Sue asked stunned.
‘Yeah………….’ He pulled it out of his pocket and she could see it was already well read.
Taking it she didn’t open it but pulled out her letter and passed it to him, ‘I ………. err……. wanted to say how much I loved your letter……… I guess you didn’t send it……….’
‘I think we’ve been set up, Sue……’ he opened it and smiled warmly at her, ‘………. but since you’re here and I’m here and the letter pretty well sums up some of what I wanted to say, how about we go for dinner and then I can tell you everything else I love about you…………’
Sue was more than a little confused until she opened the letter and recognised her own writing, ‘Amanda………..’ she whispered.
Jack nodded, ‘and I wrote a love letter for Ben to send to a girl he was interested in………….’
‘Jack, I’m sorry…………’ she could feel herself blushing, wished the ground would open up and swallow her.
‘I’m not………. I’m very glad they saw something and acted on it, gave us the push we needed………. what is written in that letter is only a very small fraction of what I feel for you………….’
Gently he pulled her close to him and lowered his head, his lips brushing hers so lightly at first she wasn’t completely sure they had even made contact.
As she whispered his name he brushed them again, applying more pressure, waiting for her to respond, terrified of scaring her off.
The kiss at Callaghan and Merced had been a matter of necessity, a kiss which haunted their waking thoughts and many of their sleeping thoughts. Jack was determined that this would not be such a kiss, he had waited over three years to express his love and he had no intention of messing it up this time…….. when he was finished Sue would be in no doubt just how much he loved her.
As he increased the pressure he rejoiced as she responded to him, felt her wrap her arms around him and move her hands to his hair where she held his head close to hers.
Gently he wrapped one arm around her shoulders and pulled her even closer while his other hand ran through her long silky hair as they expressed their love and desire.
Three years of unspoken love took a while to express and as soon as they came up for air they longed to kiss again.
Checking his watch and discovering it was 8.30 Jack suggested they went for dinner, ‘you got your car?’ he asked.
Sue shook her head, ‘I thought you’d be driving……. Since it was your letter……’
‘No problem…….’ he took her hand in his and squeezed it gently as the headed to the car where he presented her with the flowers and chocolates.
Tears poured down her face as she signed ‘THANK YOU’.
‘Sue…….. have I upset you?’ Concern was written across his handsome face.
‘No…….. I’m sorry…….. I’ve wanted this for so long Jack but now I’m so scared…………’
Jack took her in his arms and quietly waited for the sobs to cease.
‘SCARE YOU ME?’
Sue shook her head, ‘I’m scared I won’t be what you want in a girlfriend…….. that you will be like every other guy I’ve dated, not that there have been many, and decide I’m really not worth the effort………’
He gently wiped away her tears and checked she could read him before speaking.
‘Sue…….. I have waited three years to tell you I love you…….. I’ve known since you walked away from me at Bobbys’ party that you were the woman I wanted to spend the rest of my life with………. and I will wait as long as it takes until you believe that…… I’ve learnt so much about communicating with you at work, when we’ve spent time together…… the undercovers we’ve done together…………… I already know I’m hopelessly in love with you, my only regret is having two 13 year old kids make me wake up to my senses. You will never, ever be too much trouble Sue……… I love you……….., if I could I’d sweep you off your feet to the nearest church and marry you right now………. but I will wait until you’re ready……. until you believe I’m here for the rest of your life………’

‘I love you too Jack’ she whispered breathlessly as they came up again for some much needed air before eventually heading for dinner.
Waiting for their food to arrive Sue contacted Ben and Amanda informing them that their plan had worked and thanking them for giving them the push they so badly needed.
Sitting together in the movies they breathed a sigh of relief, aware they could have been toast if it hadn’t worked.
Amanda grinned to herself, she’d beaten Lucy as a matchmaker, life didn’t get any better than that. She smiled as she snuggled in to Ben and felt him plant a gentle kiss on her head.

Thursday night
Sitting with the team that night they maintained a work approach, despite knowing they were committed to each other there were still a number of issues to discuss such as the policy and right now it was fun knowing something the team didn’t know. Even Luce hadn’t picked up that they were dating yet which appealed to Jacks weird sense of humour since she had been desperate to fix them up.
Sue just reckoned it was a miracle they’d kept it quiet for so long.
Jack reflected on the moment when he’d informed Lucy that he and Rhonda were history, she’d jumped around so much he thought she was going to bounce through the floor.
‘So…….. are you two going to start dating?’ Myles asked thinking that this course of true love needed a kick start and he was the man to do it.
After all he’d stopped Luce from leaving the team when Arlene almost became their rotor and all the guys had agreed that he was ‘the man…………’
‘MYLES!!!!!!!!’ They all shouted at him.
‘Myles……… if or when we start dating and make it official I promise you will all be the first to know…….. after we’ve spoken to Ted since there are obviously issues to resolve ……….’ Jack was calm but firm, this obsession with his love life was driving him nuts.
‘Sue…….. order what ever you want since this is their ‘pound of flesh’ for their pathetic attempts at setting us up………In fact I think you should order for Levi and really make them pay………...’ Jack grinned at her and her heart melted.
They’d laughed over the teams efforts to set them up the other night, impressed that they had kept their secret for 2 weeks now. Dating hadn’t changed things a great deal except for not having to find an excuse to spend time together and the length of time it had taken to say goodnight.
Because of the number of security cameras around the bureau they didn’t hold hands or kiss once they pulled into the parking garage or in the building but more than made up for it once they left work.
To thank Ben and Amanda they’d taken them to the movies and dinner, Ben had looked very smart in his hired tux and Amanda had looked stunning in the deep purple dress she’d had her dad buy for the occasion.
