Chapter 18

Two weeks later they were surprised to be called into Ted’s office.

‘Please, take a seat guys.’

‘What can we do for you Ted? Another undercover?’ Jack asked quietly.

‘No………….. a little bird tells me that you two are dating……….’

‘A little bird? Which little bird?’ Sue asked, convinced they had kept the secret well.

‘Actually my wife, she saw the two of you together one evening at the movies…… she asked why I hadn’t told her……. naturally I hadn’t got a clue……. not very good for an FBI Supervisor……… I’m sure you’ll agree…….even less good is having your hopelessly romantic wife berate you for not telling her something you didn’t even know about in the first place………...’

Ted fought back a smile as he remembered the conversation he’d had with his wife…….. a slightly one-sided conversation he recalled it being as she berated him for not keeping her abreast of the romances in the bureau. ‘She may be a foot and a half shorter but we both know who wears the trousers’ he thought as he waited for an explanation.

‘Ted, I’m really sorry…….. I know I should have spoken to you as Unit Leader….. but it hasn’t been that long……. a little over a month and we wanted to give ourselves some time…….. to see if we could make a go of things before we thought about who should move on……….’ Jack bumbled badly as he held Sues’ hand tightly.

‘I’m guessing since I didn’t know that the team don’t either?’

They shook their heads and Ted smiled, impressed that they had dated for so long without anyone finding out.

‘The good news is that neither of you will be leaving the team………. we have known for some time that you are close……. in fact the whole team is close and that is probably why you are one of the best teams in the bureau, if not the best……. We’ve seen at first hand how you care for and support each other, how you back each other in tight spots…….. how you fight to find the truth when one of you is in trouble…….. as your Supervisor I have agreed, with the AD, to take responsibility for you remaining together in the team and dating…….. I’m trusting you not to let me down…………’

‘We won’t I promise Ted…… we promise……’ Jack stated, looking over at Sue who nodded, her eyes brimming with tears of relief.

‘Ok……… that’s it……….. one more thing………. I expect an invitation to the wedding………….’

Jack and Sue nodded happily as they left the office hand in hand.

‘All’s well that ends well…………’ Ted muttered to himself as he watched them leave.

That was good are they going to share the news that they are dating with the team now?

Chapter 19

‘So, we gonna tell the team yet?’ Sue asked as he led her out to the car before heading out to a wooded area over the river.

Jack shook his head, ‘not yet……….. let’s leave them guessing a while longer…….’ He grinned at her, reminding her of a little boy who knew a secret.

‘Looks good to me……… when are you planning on letting them in on the secret?’

‘When you agree to marry me…………..’ he answered quietly. ‘I want this to be our relationship……… when they find out we’re dating we’ll become public property……. I don’t want that…….. you saw what they were like about the blind date…….. I don’t want stupid questions all the time……… we’ve had enough trouble getting this far……… and if Myles says ‘the course of true love never did run smooth’ once more I think I’ll get my gun out and shoot him……. Every time I see Luce she mutters about star-crossed lovers……. or Romeo and Juliet……..’

‘But for me to agree to marry you, you have to ask me…………. and you haven’t yet………. and forget Romeo and Juliet…….. they killed themselves………. Will Shakespeare has a great deal to answer for.........’ she grinned at him.

‘So……….. if I asked you to marry me…….. what do you think your answer might be………?’

‘Ask me and find out……..’

Taking a deep breath Jack got down on one knee, ‘Sue……… I don’t have a ring………. but I do know that I love you more than I have ever loved any woman…….. you have made me a better person, there is so much I love about you……… I want to spend the rest of my life with you………. to hold you and kiss you, to be your friend and your lover, to be the father to your children, to grow old with you……….. I love you Sue……. will you marry me?’

As he spoke he signed, aware of the tears filling her eyes which would make lip reading difficult.

‘Yes…………’ it was barely a whisper and not all that she wanted to say but for both of them it was enough.

Taking her in his arms he kissed her gently before increasing the passion and pressure.

About to suggest they buy a ring, he heard his cell ringing.’ Hudson!!’ his tone was sharper than he would have liked as he signed to Sue.

‘Sparky? Where are you……… ?’

‘Out on an important case with Sue…… why? What do you want?’

‘Nothing, just wondered why you hadn’t been in yet………… we were worried about you both……… Myles thinks you’ve had a lovers tiff and gone to do a Rozzer and Jules and top yourselves………’

‘Tell Myles he has an overactive imagination ……….. we’ll be in soon, just some things we need to take care of first………….’

Closing his phone quickly before Bobby could reply he explained the conversation to Sue who sighed loudly.

‘So……….. how about we go buy the ring, let Ted know and then tell the guys…… maybe they’ll leave us alone then…….’

‘Looks like a plan Sue………’ Taking her hand in his they headed into the city to buy the ring.

Think Sue and Jack should tell the team rather soon, otherwise Myles will turn crazy... He has so an overactive imagination...

Chapter 20

Leaving Ted’s office they ambled in to the pen, hand in hand.

‘Well look who’s finally turned up for work……..’ Myles commented sarcastically, oblivious to the fact that they were holding hands.

‘What are you doing?’ Luce squealed at them, immediately noticing the hand holding, ‘are you two finally dating?’

‘Dating? Nope………… we’ve moved beyond dating’ Jack answered ensuring Sue could read his lips.

‘What do you mean, moved beyond dating……?’ Tara asked, ‘you mean you’ve skipped the whole dating thing and gone for………. Gone for what?’

‘You haven’t gone and got married have you Sparky?’

‘Nope…….. we’re not dating and we’re not married……..’

‘But you have been dating?’ D clarified, noticing that Jack still had a tight grip of Sues’ left hand.

‘I can confirm that we have been dating, yes………. but………’

‘How long have you been dating exactly?’ Bobby asked.

‘A little over a month……….’ Sue confirmed, chewing her bottom lip.

‘A little over a month………?’ Myles squawked, ‘you mean you pair were already dating when we tried to set you up………..?’

Jack nodded as his shoulders began to shake and he and Sue began to howl with laughter.

‘And you sat there and allowed us to make complete idiots of ourselves as we tried to explain how good you looked together………..?’ Luce exclaimed.

‘So, if you are together would you care to enlighten us about how exactly it happened and why you felt the need to keep it a secret and what you are doing if you are neither dating nor married……..’ Myles waved his hands theatrically as he spoke as the lights flashed in everyones’ brains.

‘You’re engaged?’ Tara squealed, beating everyone else to the question.

They nodded quietly as Luce pulled Sues’ hand from Jacks and flashed her ring for everyone to see.

‘Congratulations guys………. really happy for you, but right now we want answers so spill.’ Bobby told them.

‘We’ve been dating a little over a month, we were set up by two people who were a little more imaginative than you guys……….. and with whom we felt we could share a little of our feelings without feeling we’d be gossiped about or teased or scrutinised all the time………… and today I asked Sue to marry me and she agreed……….. we’ve spoken to Ted and can continue to work together………. we didn’t say anything because we wanted a little privacy…… Since Sue arrived we’ve felt ourselves to be a topic of conversation, people to be ‘fixed up’ and we wanted to be left alone………to give ourselves time and space to be with each other without everyone watching us, assessing us, commenting on us……..’ Jack explained quietly, watching them look at least a little ashamed, knowing he was right. They would have commented daily on their relationship, wanted details….. would probably have ended up seeing them split because of the pressure they were under.

‘So………. who finally got you two together?’ Luce asked.

‘Ben and Amanda……….’ Sue answered with a broad grin.

‘Ben and Amanda…….? We were outdone by a couple of teenagers……?’ Myles was beside himself with a mix of anger and embarrassment.

Jack and Sue nodded quietly before howling with laughter at the looks of disbelief written on the faces of their friends.

Unable to contain her excitement any longer Luce spoke, ‘I can’t believe I’ve been trying to fix you two up for 3 years and they actually managed it …….. I need to take lessons from them……Seriously, we are all really happy for both of you….. set the date yet?’

Sue shook her head, ‘I doubt we’ll wait too long though………’

‘As Shakespeare once wrote ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ Myles commented, earning himself a black look from Bobby who was heartily sick of Myles quoting Shakespeare at him all the time, while Jack pulled Sue close and gave her a gentle kiss on the lips.
