Chapter 8

Thursday early afternoon

‘Forget 15.00………. we need a meeting now……..’ Luce informed them as she rushed into the room.

‘Randy……………….? We set her up with Randy? How foolproof was that?’ Bobby spat.

‘And how am I supposed to know that Jack would have something ‘come up’ and Randy would also be meeting friends there who would fail to arrive……. I didn’t even figure the man had friends……… I’m an FBI Agent not a psychic’ Myles retorted.

‘So, what do we do now? Jack and Sue are a marriage made in heaven while Jack and Allie are a relationship from the dark side and don’t even get me started on Sue and Randy………….’ Tara stated.

D sighed, oblivious to the dirty look Myles threw his way, ‘I knew this would become a ‘Comedy of Errors’’.

‘I think we should come clean with both of them……. explain…. beg their forgiveness for interfering and hope it’s the kick up the butt they need.’ Luce suggested, ‘explain it’s like all great romance comedies, a mix up here, missed communication there……….. ‘

‘You think they’d buy it?’ D asked.

Bobby shrugged, ‘possibly not but the alternative is Jack and Allie married and Sue married to Randy………. neither of which are very palatable…….’

‘Maybe watching Sue date Randy will be the push Jack needs to declare his feelings……..’ D suggested.

‘Doubt it…… he watched her date Scott, David and Tony without doing anything, without ‘declaring himself’’ Tara pointed out.

‘No…… because he wants her to be happy and if he’s not the man to do that then he’ll let her go………….’

‘That’s very profound Koala Boy’ Myles commented dryly, arching his eyebrows.

‘Jacks’ words, not mine………….’

‘Ok……… so what are we going to do about our star-crossed lovers, since they are as right for each other as Romeo and Juliet………..’

‘Harvard…… I told you, that is not a good choice, they topped themselves……’ Bobby interrupted, earning himself a black look from Myles which he returned with a good natured grin.

‘I agree with Luce……. I think we should tell them and explain why we did what we did, hopefully they will take the hint and do something about it…..’ D stated.

‘It’ll take more than a hint; they need a sledgehammer to knock some sense into them’ Myles muttered darkly.

‘So……. are we going for grovelling apologies then?’ Bobby asked quietly.

The others nodded and looked over at Myles.

‘Since it was your idea, I think you should tell them’ D gave Myles the look which said ‘this is not up for discussion’ and he nodded silently. In truth he hadn’t come up with anything better.

‘Over dinner tonight?’ he asked.

‘No…….. now……… before they have time to arrange things with Allie and Randy……..’ D continued.

oh i don't want to miss this

Chapter 9

Thursday afternoon

‘Errrrrrrrr …….. guys………… could we have a word……..’ Bobby led the team in to the pen, relieved to see Jack and Sue at their desks.

‘Sure…… what’s up?’ Jack signed ’GET SUE’ to Levi as he spoke.

‘Ummmmmmmm we have something to tell you….. errrrr…….. I…. ummmmmmm ……. errrr…….. Myles began to babble, this was way more scary than facing a bunch of terrorists. He watched as Sue rose from her seat and perched on Jacks’ desk.

‘Yeah……’ Jack prompted.

‘I…….. we…… um……. errrrr….. I…….’

‘Myles if you don’t get on with this I’m gonna take you out and shoot you…….. or beat it out of you……….’ Jack threatened.

D sighed loudly, thinking to himself that this could be The Tempest soon, ‘what Myles here is trying to say in his on inimitable fashion is……’

‘Sorry, I didn’t quite get that……’

‘I-N-I-M-I-T-A-B-L-E……… UNIQUE, QUIRKY…….’ Jack signed and spoke as Sue nodded and smiled at him.

‘What is he trying to tell us?’ Jack asked, his patience wearing thin.

‘We have a confession to make’ Bobby interrupted, ‘last night we were trying to set you two up……… a blind date, well kind of a blind date since you already know each other……….’

‘Because we care about you……… and you are so right for each other……. as I’ve said before……. more than once……’ Luce mumbled, feeling her face burn with embarrassment.

‘And there is so much chemistry between the pair of you, I’m surprised you haven’t internally combusted ………’ Myles chipped in, feeling more confident now D had taken the lead in explaining the situation.

‘So……….. you’re saying that none of you ever had any intention of turning up for dinner?’ Jack asked. His face was impassive as he crossed his arms and raised his eyebrows to question whether Sue was following.

She smiled and nodded and he could hear his heart pounding, felt the blood rushing around his head.

‘No……. we knew if we suggested you dated you’d get angry with us…… we thought if you were the only two people there you’d talk, maybe start dating…… properly, not these pretend dates you have……. but we didn’t factor in Allie or Randy……… we’re sorry guys………’ Luce mumbled.

Jack looked over at Sue ‘YOU ME TELL THEM?’

She shook her head ‘THEM HOLE DIG YOU ME WATCH’

‘I see………’ Jack nodded his head thoughtfully, watching them all squirming with shame and embarrassment.

‘So……….. you all decided that Sue and I needed to be set up……. as a couple……….. and this was the best you could come up with?’

They all nodded, ‘It was Harvards’ idea……’ Bobby stammered.

‘We honestly only did it because we care for both of you and we can see how much you care for each other…… you are so right for each other…just like Romeo and Juliet……………...’ Tara bumbled now, feeling herself falling deeper in to the hole they had dug.

Sue looked at Jack and raised her eyebrows as he blocked out everything else to sign the conversation to her, smiling as she grinned at him.

‘We appreciate the sentiments guys, but might I suggest you follow the old proverb, ‘when in a hole stop digging’……….’ We would both like you to leave things alone……….’

‘You knew Sparky………?’

Jack nodded, ‘you think we don’t talk to each other?’

Flashback

Tuesday evening

Walking Levi that night after a little bookworm meeting Jack asked, ‘You doing anything tomorrow night, Sue?’

‘Yeah………. Tara and Luce asked if we could meet for dinner and a catch up with Donna….. since she’s free………. you?’

‘Yeah……. The guys want a boys night…….. McGinteys, 7.30….. dinner then pool………’

‘McGinteys huh……? That’s interesting’ Sue murmured.

‘And why is that interesting?’ Jack asked raising his eyebrows and signing.

‘Same time, same place as we’re meeting……….’

‘Ah…….. and you reckon………?’

‘Yeah…….. I reckon we’ll be the only two who turn up………..’

‘Sue I’m sorry……… I wish they’d leave us alone……..’

‘They mean well Jack….. let’s keep quiet, see what happens……. maybe they will be there………’

Jack shrugged and placed his arm around Sues’ shoulders before they headed back to his car followed by Levi.

mmmm are they already dating me wonder.....


and trust you... mmmmmmm as a nurse mmmmm, i am not going to say anything to that....

It was so funny to see Myles in particular get so flustered.

I thought Sue and Jack were on to them. Glad I was right.

I see them all lined up like sulky school children at the principal's office!!!

Chapter 10

Thursday afternoon cont.

‘But Allie isn’t right for you Jack…….. and Sue there is no way you can date Randy……….’ Myles almost exploded with emotion…….. if Sue opted to continue dating the ‘Napoleonic little paper pusher’ he’d have to seriously consider having her admitted to a mental institution.

‘I’m not dating Allie…….. and as far as I’m aware Sue isn’t dating Randy…………..’

‘But you said……….’

‘I said Allie was relocating to DC and was looking for somewhere to live, Crash……’

‘But you found her a place……. in your block…….’ Luce interrupted.

‘Did I forget to mention that Allie was married? To a guy who works at the White House….. that’s why she’s moving down…….’

‘You stitched me up good and proper didn’t you, Sparky?’

Jack grinned, ‘yup……. you put two and two together and came up with every number but four……..’

‘But what about you and Randy……… please tell me you aren’t dating him……’ Luce was almost begging.

‘No…….. I’m not dating Randy……’

‘But you went to lunch with him?’ Tara asked.

‘Yeah, he wanted some advice…… we went to lunch….. he paid and I never turn down a free meal………. I learnt that lesson from my Training Agent……..and it gave us a golden opportunity to wind you guys up just a little bit more…………..’

‘And once we’d started it was just like reeling in a fish……. Watching you all squirm and wriggle once you took the bait…….’ Jack was having real trouble now stopping himself from roaring with laughter.

‘You said you were going to lunch with the guy you met last night………’

‘And at the time when you asked me I was…….. but then I bumped in to Randy, took a rain check from lunch……….’ Sue fought back a smile, thoroughly enjoying the team tying themselves up in knots.

‘Ok so who did you meet last night, Sue?’ D was pretty sure he knew, couldn’t believe they had been done up like kippers, but wanted clarification.

We're quite sure we know as well, D, but we want to have confirmation, too.

please give us confirmation.....

I knew it! Now please tell me Sue did indeed meet Jack.

I just read this straight thru Cath and I am Absolutely terrific job building this up and busting on the team, which I don't know if I should feel sorry for, or figure they're getting what they deserve.

Cath, this is wonderful! I loved the way Jack and Sue had them like that and I guess it's time to hear what's really going on!

Chapter 11

‘Jack’.

‘Jack? But how? You said……something came up….’ Bobby muttered as D broke into a broad grin, yup they’d been done up like kippers.

‘Something did come up ……. I was running late……. but I made it……… I wasn’t going to ……. I rang McGinteys, the guy said you weren’t there….. so I rang Sue……. she told me she’d been stood up so she ordered for me and I drove straight over…… we enjoyed a wonderful dinner………..’ Jack grinned as he spoke.

‘So……. you’re not mad…… we’re forgiven?’ Tara asked hopefully.

‘I wouldn’t go that far…… I think we’d both appreciate it if you left us alone, let us decide who we want to date, right Sue?’

Sue nodded and smiled at him, ‘but I think Jack and I deserve our ‘pound of flesh’ for the torment you put us through……… so I would suggest you take us out for dinner tonight……’ she continued.

Hanging their heads and realising they had been caught out, caught red handed, they agreed.

I wonder if dinner will reveal any other secrets from Jack and Sue?

Two weeks earlier at ‘Little Bookworm’ evening.

Jack picked Ben up since his mom was in hospital giving birth to their third child and his Grandma couldn’t leave his sister alone in bed to drive him over.

‘JACK I ASK QUESTION?’

‘SURE CONTINUE’

‘YOU LOVE SUE – WANT MARRY SUE?’

‘YES I LOVE SUE MUCH WANT MARRY HER’

‘WHY YOU NOT MARRY?’

‘C-O-M-P-L-I-C-A-T-E-D I DEAF NOT - SIGNING POOR - WE TOGETHER WORK NO DATE’

‘IF LOVE YOU MARRY HAVE CHILDREN SUE NO WORK THEN’

‘WHEN OLDER YOU –YOU UNDERSTAND – I THINK SUE NOT LOVE ME’

Sadly Jack pointed his car in the direction of the club, hoping Ben wouldn’t ask anymore difficult questions.

Later that evening Ben approached Jack again.

‘J-A-C-K YOU HELP ME ……..?’

‘SURE’

‘I LIKE GIRL WANT TELL HER –HOW?’

‘LETTER?’

‘SAY WHAT?’

‘SAY LOTS THINGS LIKE HER’

‘LETTER WRITE HOW?’

Ben passed him a sheet of paper.

‘I TELL LIKE WHAT - WRITE YOU PLEASE?’

‘O-K’

Jack began to write, ‘Dear……….’ ‘NAME WHAT?’

‘I WRITE – IF GOOD TELL YOU – IF BAD I QUIET’

‘AMANDA NO?’ Jack shrugged as he asked.

‘NO’

‘LIKE WHAT YOU?’

‘SMART, FUNNY, BEAUTIFUL, NICE SMILE, MAKES ME SMILE, LIKE WATCH HER WORK’

‘WORK?’

‘AT SCHOOL’

JACK NODDED AND RETURNED TO THE LETTER.

‘GOOD FRIEND HER – TELL HER THINGS ME – FEEL BETTER ME WHEN WITH HER – HER ‘HEAR’ PEOPLE - HEARTS’.

‘MORE?’ Jack asked as Ben stopped signing.

Ben shook his head.

‘ENOUGH THINK YOU?’ Jack signed,

‘YES…….. MORE SAY WHEN WE DATE’

‘YOU ASK HER DATE IN LETTER?’

‘YES……. YOU WRITE LIKE LOVE LETTER – I COPY - GIVE HER’

‘YOU FETCH COFFEE ME - I WRITE…… HOPE IT GO WELL- YOU SAY TIME, DAY DATE?’

‘7 PM I DECIDE PLACE DAY LATER……’


As Ben ambled off to fetch coffee, Jack sat and wrote the love letter, ending it ‘there is more I want to tell you, will you go out with me? If so meet me at 7PM ……………at……………….
Love…………………………..’.

Taking the letter from Jack Ben signed his thanks, ‘SECRET US -SUE KNOW NOT PLEASE.’

Sue shrugged her shoulders and waited for Amanda to sign.

YOUR SMILE- EYES - GOOD LOOKING -MAKE ME LAUGH -GOOD FRIEND - LISTEN TO ME - MUCH MORE I SAY - ON DATE.

‘YOU ASK HIM DATE?’ Sue signed, wondering if she should try that with Jack.

‘YES YOU WRITE LOVE LETTER – I COPY – MEET 7 PM DECIDE DAY PLACE LATER’

Sue wrote the letter while Amanda went to catch up with some friends.

Ending it ‘there is more I want to say, if you are interested meet me 7 PM ……….. at……………..

Love……………..’

‘OK?’ she asked as Amanda returned.

‘PERFECT – YOU SAY NOTHING – OUR SECRET – JACK NOT KNOW’

‘D-E-A-L’

Sue left the letter with Amanda and went to talk to some of the parents.

Sneaking out Ben and Amanda compared letters and filled in the blank spaces before placing them in envelopes.

‘YOU TAKE SUE TOMORROW I TAKE JACK – THEY MEET SATURDAY NIGHT YOU ME THERE ALSO’ Ben signed and they high-fived before returning to the group and heading home via the burger place since Jack hadn’t eaten.

Taking Ben home then Amanda Jack walked Levi with Sue before heading home.

This is so clever to thing of having Ben and Amanda playing matchmakers.
