Maybe all this rushing and running is because Sue wants to meet Jack in time for the anniversary? Stop teasing, yhm! dry.gif tongue.gif

Part 5

Looking at a sleeping Jack never failed to make Sue melt with tenderness. Relieved of his responsibilities, he looked young and vulnerable and, more than once, she’d been overwhelmed by a need to gather him into her arms, wishing she could shelter him from the ills he saw at work.

And she loved how he often reached for her in his sleep, allowing her to awaken in the security of loving arms. Stepping closer, she realised with a rush of aching warmth that, in her absence, he’d been hugging her pillow. She bit her lip, feeling the sting of tears, knowing it had definitely been the right decision to hurry home.

She bent over the beloved face, gently nuzzling and kissing him awake. His eyelashes fluttered and he turned. She kissed him again. “Jack, darling, I’m home,” she whispered. “Jack?”

He sat up and clicked on the bedside lamp in one movement. She blinked away her tears, her heart full as she took in the dark hair that stuck up all over his head and the sleepy confusion on his face.

“Sue?”

She watched him rub his face. He glanced at the clock: 23.57, then settled dark eyes on her. “Sue!”

Her smile would have lit the room if he hadn’t grabbed her and dragged her down on top of him, silencing any further conversation with a hungry welcome kiss.

And it was Sue who pulled away breathlessly to peek at the clock: 23.59. She’d made it; it was still the 25th.

“Happy anniversary, Jack.” She wrapped her arms ever tighter around him.

He leaned back into his pillow, looking slightly dazed. “You came back for this?”

“Hmmm … I’m sorry we only had three minutes of today.”

“You travelled in this traffic and this weather for me? At this hour?”

Sue opted for levity. “Shall I hold it against you for the next fifty years or so?”

“Not really.”

“Then stop it. I didn’t know when I could get away today … ummm … yesterday, and the weather and the traffic would have been the same and besides, the point was to be with you in our home, not a hotel room we didn’t choose for ourselves.”

Jack looked stricken. “I should have gone to you. I didn’t even - ”

“We both know you had a lot on your plate.” Sue put a finger to his lips. “But I couldn’t bear the thought of being parted by work or that our memory of our first anniversary was one with us apart. We made a vow before God to love and to cherish, to have and to hold each other for better or for worse, remember? I intend to honour those promises for life, and I know you do too. If I kept my word to Hackford, why wouldn’t I keep my vows to you when they mean so much more?”

When he nodded his understanding, Sue smiled.

“You’ve given me an incredible year as your wife, Jack, because you’re you. We’re building a life together that’s already more than I’ve dared to dream about.” Her smile turned impish as she poked his ribs. “You might not have thought of coming to NY but I know you ordered roses … a lot of them.”

She stared in fascination as Jack turned red. “Lucy.”

“Yep. She called to alert me so I’d be around to receive them but once she knew I was coming back, she cancelled the order for you. You have a wonderful team that came through for me to get me home - Bobby’s just left actually - and I’m very grateful.”

“Remind me to change florists. You’re saying they all knew? Except me?”

“I think that’s the point about surprises.” She giggled at his face. “Some surveillance hot shot you are.”

He glared at her but finally smiled.

She kissed him on his nose. “Darling, I’ll tell you everything later. Right now, I want to enjoy being with my husband.”

Jack grinned. Husband … now, there was something he never tired of hearing her say and he particularly loved it when she said it with great firmness in the presence of unwanted female attention. And, dutiful and loving husband that he was, he knew just the right thing to do.

“Two things,” he whispered much later, his voice husky.

“What?” Sue sounded distracted.

“One, I love you. Two, don’t take risks like this again. If I’d known you were planning to drive -”

“That’s probably another reason why nobody told you. So, two things.”

“What?”

“One, I love you. Two, I do not intend to be separated from you by going away ever again. I think I can handle you being away but I’m staying put from now on.”

“Okay. One more thing.”

“What?”

“You’re overdressed.”

Sue scrambled off the bed. “So I am.”

As she kicked off her shoes, she took in the light in Jack’s eyes and knew she was exactly where she wanted to be.

“But first, I need to wash off New York,” she said, backing towards the bathroom. And it was Jack’s turn to chuckle as he dodged a haphazardly thrown cardigan.

“Do you know if there’s a handy sort of man around here who could help? Sort of to have and to hold? I’ve been told bathrooms can be really slippery … ”

Sue laughed in delight as Jack practically leapt out of bed. As he reached her, she put a hand to his chest. “One more thing.”

He raised an eyebrow, grinning. “What?”

“I can’t wait to share Year Two with you.”

YHM...I FEEL SAD......not because anything you've done but because I didn't know you started another story and I missed it until today. Then I started reading and you've already ended it. Can I say I loved it from beginning to end.

A promise is a debt, especially when they have vowed to be with each other, to have and to hold, and on thei last 3 minutes of their anniversary, Sue overcame every obstacle to come back for him. True dedication, devotion and pure love!

Thankyou hon!
