Chapter 11

‘I love you too Jack………. I heard you last night…….’

Jack spun round, ‘what do you mean you heard me…….? You mean you can hear now…….?’

Sue shook her head sadly, ‘not now no………. but last night, for just a few seconds I heard your voice……. and I heard Levi bark…… just once……..’

She reached out her hand as she spoke, willing Jack to take his seat beside the bed.

‘Sorry……. I’m lost…….’ Jack sat on the bed and lifted her hand, holding it gently.

‘Some time last night I began to wake up…….. I don’t know when, I was confused about what had happened……… I felt something tight on my arm and a light shining in my eyes………. I guess someone must have told you to go home…I couldn’t hear a voice….. I heard you say, ‘I’m not going anywhere……. I love her and I’m staying here until she’s awake……’ then Levi barked once…….you lifted my hand to your lips and kissed it and I could feel your tears trickling over it……….’

‘How do you know it was my voice……..?’ Jack asked, remembering the conversation with the nurse……. Levi had barked in defiance at the suggestion that they should leave Sue and the nurse had given in gracefully, returning later with a mug of semi-decent coffee.

‘I just knew……….. the same way I know it’s Gods’ voice I hear…….. I can’t explain it……… I just know it was your voice……… it was firm but gentle, very warm and sexy, comforting…….. I’ve often asked God to let me hear, just for a few seconds, the voice of the man I love……. I didn’t hear anything else and I can’t hear you now……….. I wish I could but it’s a sound I won’t ever forget……’ tears trickled down her cheeks as Jack stared at her; unsure which was the bigger miracle, Sue hearing him briefly or Sue loving him.

‘Yeah one of he nurses told me to go home, said I couldn’t do anything so I asked if anyone knew ASL…. When she said no I told her we weren’t going anywhere………. I love you Sue, so much…….. I was terrified last night when I saw you crash in to the side…….. I thought I was about to lose you……….’ Jack fought back tears of joy and relief as he spoke.

Unable to say any more he bent his head forward and kissed her gently, afraid to hurt her.

Watching them together Levi did a little happy doggy dance.

‘Looks like Levi is happy about this…’ Jack murmured hearing the sound of claws on the tiled floor.

‘Yeah……….. he probably thinks you’ll feed him even more titbits, Hudson…….’ She slapped him lightly on the arm.

‘That too’ Levi thought as he settled down for a snooze on the floor.

YEA she told him.....I'm so glad that she got to her his voice just once.....

And Levi.....

I was hoping that's what she would say. It is a beautiful thought that Sue was able to briefly hear Jack's voice.

Chapter 12

Having collected his car while Sue ate and washed Jack returned to the hospital to take her home.

‘READY?’

Sue nodded and smiled, taking his hand as they left the room.

Not content with holding hands Jack wrapped his arm around her shoulder and kissed her gently on the head as they headed to the car.

‘When we get to yours, you put your feet up and rest……. Doctors’ orders……..’ he told her firmly.

‘They told me I could go in to work, Jack……….’

‘They did not Thomas……. I checked… no work until tomorrow and then only if I think you’re fit …..’ Jack tapped her lightly on the nose, ‘I double-checked…… I know you, trying to run before you can walk……..’

‘This from a man with a heart condition……’

‘Yeah…… a man with a heart condition who takes his medication and attends regular checks……. So you are going to do as you are told…….. and I will pull rank on you if I have to……….’

‘Ahhhhhh ……… now it all becomes clear…… you want to date me so you can tell me what to do……… that looks like a plan Hudson……..’ Sue grinned at him and tried to squirm away from him but he kept a firm grip around her shoulder, laughing as he did so.

‘I want to date you because I love you……….’ he spun her round and bent his head to capture her lips, kissing her gently at first then increasing the pressure as she responded.

Calling in at his apartment to shower and change Jack emerged from his room to find Sue asleep on his couch.

Picking her up Jack carried her carefully to his room and laid her gently on the bed before leaving a note and heading out to walk Levi.

While Jack sat on a bench and thought about Sue, Levi happily chased squirrels until his fun was interrupted by Gordon swooping down on him.

‘Levi my man, my buddy……… I have a cunning plan for wishes 2 and 3………..’

‘No…….. I don’t want to know……… I have acquired more grey hairs in the few days since you arrived in my life than I have for the last 9 years……..‘ Levi could feel his legs trembling at the mere thought of any further metings or interactions with Gordon

‘But wish one was granted………. we make a great team you and me …… this is my plan………’

‘They are together because Someone performed a miracle…….. and that someone wasn’t you……. since you are dangerous with potions and powders…and don’t even get me started on ice skates….. I can’t go through all of this again……. FORGET IT…….. go and sleep for another thousand years, that way the planet might just be safe…….wishes 2 and 3 I leave in the hands of Someone else………..’

As Gordon flew off in a huff, Levi heard Jack whistling him.

‘Hey buddy, how about you and I go buy a new bunny and some treats for you to have at mine…….. something tells me you’ll be here even more often……’

‘Looks like a plan Jack……….’ Levi happily wuffed at him and followed Jack to the pet store, wagging his tail happily as he did so.... he loved this man almost as much as his human did.

Leaving Levi happily chewing on one of the many toys and treats he’d bought him, Jack peered in to his room to find Sue still asleep.

Slipping off his shoes and jacket he slid quietly on to the bed wrapping her in his arms before falling asleep.

Lovely story, thanks for sharing it with us, I hope that Gordon has more luck next time when he has to make a wish come true.
