What a wonderful person Rosie is!! And, what a beautiful gesture to give Jack the ring for Sue!! With the story they both know about Rosie and Will the ring holds a lot of history, and most of all it holds everlasting love!!!

Joy

Ditto. Totally amazing Rosa!!!

Sorry there was not an update yesterday, but hope this long post will make up for that smile.gif Thanks for all your replies and reviews for this story I appreciate it very much smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif

The house was still, the lights looked for a moment as if they wouldn’t work but after a slight hesitation they came to life and bathed the room brightly. Jack took Sue’s hand as they walked together through the entire first floor, noticing each decaying surface, of a once beautiful home. Jack knew that Robin was planning to sell the land for redevelopment and both Jack and Sue wished in their hearts that it could stay, but their minds knew that it was better to let it go.

Sue felt warm through the contact of Jack’s hand, she didn’t believe in ghosts but today there was an eerie feeling to the place, possibly because it was Halloween and she was half expecting one of the local children to jump out and scare them out of their wits. They climbed the stairs together, slowly, snapping to memory the hand carved banister, followed by the once elegant bedrooms that they passed on their way to their destination.

By the time they reached the attic even Jack felt as though they were not alone, but after scanning the room which held many dark shadows despite the light bulb giving off as much glow as possible he was a unable to spy anything untoward. Sue by this time was placing everything she had taken, safely back into the trunk, as if each item was a precious jewel.

Shutting the now complete trunk closed she sighed and ran her hands over it’s old and worn surface, before standing against an eave, gazing out the small window. Jack who had been studying her every move went to join her, he had something very important to say, which couldn’t wait any longer.

He caught her attention by a featherlike touch to her arm and said “Can we talk….I need to talk”

“Okay…Is something wrong Jack? You’ve been sort of acting odd since we left Rosie”

“I’m fine” he said his expression telling her the opposite.

Unable to resist she reached out and traced her fingers down his face, smoothing out the lines of worry, his eyes burned into hers, deep, dark, fathomless pools rich with the love that he felt for her, which was erupting from him, from every pore and essence of his being. Words, words filled his brain, but he had trouble conveying them to his mouth, instead of talking he leant forward and could see the anticipation on the face of the woman before him, swallowing hard he reached her lips with his softly at first, testing, teasing. She responded, welcoming, receiving, to the wonderful warm caress. Her hands going to his jacket lapels to pull him closer, she needed to feel his body against hers to answer the need that was crying out to her from deep inside her soul. Jack kissed her with a passion that needed no words, no explanation, yet his befuddled brain knew that there had to be that too.

His hands grazed the sensuous skin of her neck as her arms curled about his. His mouth moved and trailed kisses where his fingers had just been and Sue moaned with pleasure from within, each lost in the moment, the kiss. She was invading every filament of his being as her hands moved and searched, pulling his shirt from his pants and caressing the skin of his well honed torso, he thought he was going to burst from the reeling sensations that shot through him like burning arrows of desire, half aware that she was more adventurous than he had given her credit for. Not realising at that moment that she had never been so bold when kissing a man before in all her life, but Jack was creating wonderful feelings in her and she had to touch him, her fingers itched to feel every inch of his blazing skin as Jack felt his control slipping like sand through his fingers. Jack broke the kiss with much reluctance but ensured she remained in his embrace, her fingers still on his skin continued to send shivers of delight through his already stirred up body.

He cleared his throat for his benefit and said in a voice with didn’t resemble his normal one, not that it would matter Sue wouldn’t know the difference, but he did. “Sue…I….that was…and I….. This isn’t going well, can I start again?”

She smiled and replied “Sure Jack, what? You can tell me anything”

“I know but this is a little harder to say…I mean it’s not really hard to say…I just…”

She placed her index finger across his lips and he stilled wanting to take the digit into his mouth and swirl his tongue around it before sucking on it, instead he forced to compose himself.

“Sssh. Jack while you’re thinking about what you want to say, I need to say something too. It’s not working….being in the same team anymore…I mean I love you and I can’t go on pretending that I don’t, especially when you kiss me like that….whatever you feel for me, whatever you need to say. I thought that you had to hear me tell you what I think. What I feel and have felt for a very long time, we can’t dance around each other forever, we take it to the next level or we forget it and move on with our lives. I can’t live anymore not knowing Jack”

He laughed wryly and smiled “How come you can just say it without any problem?”

“Say what?” she asked

“You know, ‘it’”

“Did you say ‘it‘?”

“Okay“ he said and sighed before taking a deep breath to say “I love you, I know this next bit might seem a little rushed but I know that I want to spend the rest of my life with you. This case…well no this Rosie and Will thing that you dragged me into, had me thinking about a lot of things. And this house, every time I am with you in this house I feel a pull…I feel the pull all the time but for some reason it’s stronger here and I don’t know why”

“Maybe it’s where Will’s memories are hidden away and we’ve been searching, delving into them” she suggested

“Maybe but Sue it’s more than that. I know it. You know it. I don’t want to walk out of my house one day and know that you’re not going to be there when I get back or…if I didn’t come back after leaving home one day…if I died like Will fighting for my country…I wouldn’t want you to be like Rosie and if it were the other way round and I lost you, the most important person in my life I wouldn’t want to be like Rosie either, alone mourning for the rest of my life…Sue will you marry me, be my wife, live a life that was denied to Will and Rosie, make each moment we share ours, every memory something to treasure, which will be far more precious than all the materialistic treasure and gems in the world?”

With tears glistening in her eyes she whispered “Yes”

Jack moved then and pulled the ring from his pocket, seeing her look he said “I know, she gave it to me…to us….she wanted a home for it where it would be cherished and I guess she could see something in us that reminded her, of her and Will. She wouldn’t take no for an answer and you know she was happy with the fact that we found it and took the trouble to return it so that in turn she could do with it what she wished. And she wished me to give it to you. Of course that’s not why I proposed” he added hurriedly as Sue smiled

“I know it’s not" she replied as he slipped it onto her finger, both surprised at the good fit, he gently raised her adorned hand to his lips and kissed it with tenderness, his eyes never leaving hers.

“I suppose I will have to ask for a transfer” she mused

“Not necessarily” Jack said when she looked at him “It says that we can’t date if we work in the same team, it says nothing about being engaged or married”

“You are rather sly after all” Sue told him matching his engaging grin.

“You know brains and muscle, that’s me, perfect combination”

She looked at him disbelievingly and disagreeing “One out of two isn’t bad” she retorted

“Which one?” he asked

“You need to ask?” she asked teasing him

“Well yeah I think I do”

“Come here, and joking aside I think you have both” she said and pulled him back towards her feeling his lips on hers once again, setting their bodies aching, straining for more than just a kiss.

It was a long moment later before they took one last look at the attic, of the house that was soon to be cleared, then sold, to be pulled down and for a new building to take it’s place. Jack and Sue laughed as they walked down the path, hand in hand, stealing kisses along the way.

The man watched them from the attic window, where they had just stood, where they had declared their love for each other, where Jack had proposed. The man was young, no more than twenty and dressed in the uniform of a soldier of the Great War, the First World War. He watched the couple with joy in their hearts, with his ring that he bought for Rosie. Now Rosie had been given back what was hers, and had in turn passed it on to the person of her choice. Now Will could rest, be at peace, he could wait for Rosie in heaven and then they would have eternity to be together, forever and never parted again. When Jack and Sue paused to look up to the attic window one last time, there was nothing there…….

The End

One last thing, I would like to dedicate this story to all the young men who died from injuries sustained during the Great War (WW1). Young men who never had a chance to grow old and whom we never had the opportunity to know.

Rosa, you have done a wonderful job on this story. it was very moving to read about Rosie and Will's story. I loved the mystery behind it all with the treasure and the wonderful old memories in the attic. Loved the fuzzies between Jack and Sue too.
I also want to thank you for the dedication to the Vets because I have 7 of them from that war in my family. Luck was with them and they all returned home.

Wow, Rosa, thank you for the story. I have to say I'm kind of choked up right now...what a beautiful ending and a wonderful tribute. What a stark reminder that "our freedom isn't free" So many families have been changed forever to give us what we have today. I am humbled.

aww so sweet.
ugh i can't believe...tho i've seen it happen often...how ppl can kill other family just for money/job/other petty things. don't they realize in the end they'll still lose out and they just took valuable life needlessly?
aww it was so sweet how sue kept wanting to find more about will and rosie and try to give rosie back what was rightfully hers.
glad jack and sue finally stopped backpedalling...all the readers will be grateful too so they can stop bashing their heads with the icons lol. yay they're engaged.
glad will can rest at peace finally and wait for his rosie.
