Thanks for all your comments, they have been very encouraging
“FBI” said Jack displaying his badge “Can we ask you a few questions?”
A well dressed woman in her forties stood there and smiled at the handsome man before her, fluttering her well made up eyelashes, which Jack was oblivious to but Sue noted, she led them into to her sitting room asking if they would like refreshments. Dry from the dusty attic they nodded the affirmative, both looking round the room until the woman returned with a tray which included cookies too, Levi’s nose began to twitch and Sue had to command him to stay where he was the last thing they needed was for Levi to help himself.
“Mrs Jarvis, how long has the house next door been empty?”
“Oh” she said “Come about that place have you, it should be pulled down as long as they build something which will fit in with the houses in the rest of the street”
“Have you noticed anything strange recently?” asked Sue
“And you still haven’t answered my question” stated Jack
“It has been empty a while I think when the old lady died, that would be Lily Kearton, the house was rented out for a time but no one wants to stay there and I can’t say I blame them” she said answering Jack’s question then adding “In the last few days there have been lights at the window, or I thought I saw lights but when I looked back they had gone”
“Why are you not surprised that nobody lives there?” asked Jack
“Well because it’s haunted, didn’t you know that? Supposedly by a young man who was a tragic victim in the first world war”
“Will” said Sue almost to herself
“What did you say dear?” Mrs Jarvis asked Sue
“Nothing, sorry” she told her
“What exactly is this ghost supposed to do?” asked a sceptical Jack
“Haunts I told you”
“Specifically”
“Well you know the usual bangs, crashes, sightings of him, the family over the road, they stayed the night there last Halloween , maybe you should ask them”
“Than you maybe we will” said Jack with a shake of his head

Before they knew it Jack and Sue were drinking coffee on the other side of the road, with the family who were into ghost hunting. The lounge was bright and airy which was an improvement on the hallway where a gold inlaid coffin was propped up against the wall. Jack enquired of it’s purpose in sitting there and the husband replied that he had just bought it on eBay, one never knew when it might come in handy. Jack and Sue had shared a look and he could tell that she wanted to get out of there as soon as it was convenient and he agreed with her.
“I understand” said Jack with a smile “That you and your family spent a night across the road, last Halloween”
“Oh yes” said the small balding man “We did a vigil, it’s was wonderful, we try to do one every Halloween”
“And this year?” asked Sue
“This year we are going to one the other side of the city in an abandoned church”
“Yes, well….” muttered Jack “Can you tell me have you noticed anything strange about the house or anything that you feel might help us with our enquires?”
“Well it’s haunted that’s for sure, last year spending the night there, gave me such a rush of adrenline. We were all determined that whatever happened we would stay there the night”
“Did you see anything?”
“The door shut on it’s own”
“That could have been a draught” said Jack
“It could have been but we think differently, we saw things move, like a clock it moved six inches or so we saw it , we only regret that we didn’t film the thing”
“Hmmm” grunted Jack ”What about now? Are there ever lights on?”
“I think the electricity has been cut off. The water for some reason is running as we got water to make coffee on our camp stove, but we assume that whoever owns it, pays for that to be kept on. But yes even though the electricity is out sometimes the lights are on and last night I swore I could hear the soft strains of the piano being played”
“Thank you, you’ve been very helpful” said Sue.

Jack and Sue stood in the entrance hall of the house and Jack attempted to turn the lights on, his finger pushed the switch down and the lights went on.
“So the electricity isn’t off then” said Sue
“No, but I tried it the other day when I found you and it didn’t work, perhaps there was a power failure”
“The place looks like it needs rewiring, maybe it’s temperamental” suggested Sue
“Good point”
They both left, Jack plunging the room in darkness beforehand and walked down the path together. The child that they had both seen and whom Sue had spoken to watched them from behind a bush, before running off to tell the man that they had gone. The man and the girl watched the couple get into the car and leave, perfectly aware that they were not the only inhabitants of the house. Jack and Sue rode back to the bullpen in an uncomfortable silence, they hadn’t said anything about their kiss and now neither of them knew where to start.
