*****Thank you...

I would be pleased to introduce you to Dr Temperance Brennan. .... she's rather unique and might i just say... Not Mine!

“Booth, I don’t know what you mean. I don’t understand. Don’t be myself around this unit? How is that going to help them?”
“Bones, that’s not what I meant. Remember what I said earlier? About not being so intelligently honest? And try not to make vague references to obscure things that only the squints understand. You’re not in the lab.”
“Fine, fine. I still think if I’m in danger, I should be allowed to carry a gun. Surely there are women in this unit who support gun carrying. And I’ll keep my vague, obscure references to a minimum.” She said. “Since it seems to be so important to you.”
“Why thanks Bones. But you still don’t get a gun. The gun-carrying woman in this unit passed her gun control tests and has a license. You don’t. Need I actually say more?” Booth said impatiently.
The team sat with bated breath in the bullpen, listening to the conversation going on in the hall. Lucy and Sue exchanged glances. Bobby’s jaw had opened slightly, astounded at how Booth was speaking to his partner. He glanced over at Tara and saw her lips were pursed and her eyes were wide with curiosity. D smirked at his teammates’ reactions as he walked by Tara’s desk and tossed a note down in front of her. She looked up at him puzzled but he was paying her no attention. She opened the note and read it quickly.
Tara-
You and Lucy were planning something over lunch yesterday.
Do I even want to know what about? Do I already know what
about…? If it has anything to do with our usual operation,
I want in. Anything you need on Jack or Sue let me know
I’d be happy to provide a little recon and get answers for you.
D.
Tara looked up at him and gave him a discreet nod and signed LATER to him. He nodded his own affirmation.
Booth and Dr. Brennan entered the bullpen. She looked around at the team with an anthropologist’s mind. She was rapidly assessing each person’s role and worth to the team. Booth grabbed her arm to gain her attention. “Bones. Erm, Dr. Brennan. I’d like to introduce you to the team that will be providing the bulk of your security detail at the party. This is their unit leader, Jack Hudson…” Jack stood and flashed her a smile and offered his hand for shaking. Bones nodded and shook his hand. “And this is Bobby Manning…” Bones was almost blown back to the Jeffersonian by the strength of his smile. “Tech agent extrodinaire, Tara Williams…” Bones sized the petite agent up quickly before offering her hand in a greeting. Tara gave her a genuine smile that was returned by an intense offering of her own. “Bones, this is their rotor, Lucy Dotson… Visual Analyst, Sue Thomas and her wonderdog, Levi. And over here, is Dimitrius Gans and Myles Leland.”
Puffing up his chest importantly, Myles was quick to correct Agent Booth. “That’s Myles Leland, the THIRD, to you.”
Temperance Brennan hadn’t spent all those years working all over the place just for the heck of it. She graciously met and greeted all those she’d been introduced to. She turned towards Myles and stepped closer to him. Her eyes were analyzing the agent she saw before her, and she pursed her lips in thought. “Oh, Agent Leland. It’s my pleasure to make your acquaintance.” The team could see Myles preen as though it was a big significance to be singled out by the illustrious author. “Of course, it is quite obvious what you’re doing.”
Myles looked at her quizzically. “Oh, really, and what might that be, Dr. Brennan? I’m not doing anything other than greet a fellow intellectual in my office, among my peers.” He said dryly.
The team waited for any sort of explanation from Dr. Brennan. They didn’t have to wait long. Booth was also waiting for the exchange to be completed; otherwise they wouldn’t have enough time to discuss the case the way they needed to.
Temperance took a deep calming breath and rolled her eyes. “It’s quite visible, to I’m sure the whole room. You see yourself on a higher-class level than your teammates. You tend to throw out $5 words and get engrossed in only the best that money can buy. You probably live in a larger house than most and have a time consuming, and money intensive hobby like orchids or roses or something.” The team choked back a laugh, as Myles was very devoted to his rose garden.
Myles looked outraged and started to bluster up a response. “Why, of the most unconscionable things I’ve ever… “ He had to stop when Temperance held up her finger.
“See?” She pointed out. “You could have just said outrageous. I’m not bringing this to your attention to wound you or your ego. I’m just trying to point out that it’s part of your breeding. You’re Harvard educated right?” Myles nodded. “And you probably come from old New England money…?” Again, Myles nodded. “And you were most likely raised in direct competition to any siblings, causing you to always feel you have to prove you’re better than anyone else. You can’t stand to fail.”
Myles glared at her. “How dare you come in here and defame my reputation! I won’t stand for this! I don’t think I’m better than anyone else is…”
Temperance just fixed him with her calm gaze. She glanced around at his teammates and observed the mixture of awe and surprise on the faces. Her eyes narrowed as she realized that in spite of all his posturing to the contrary, she’d hit the proverbial nail on the head. “Are you done? Because if you’d just listen, I could at least show you that no one blames you for giving into the anthropological inevitability of your social standing. But don’t stand there and say you don’t think you are above anyone else in this room. It’s apparent by the silk tie and the Armani suit. No one else in this room is that impeccably dressed. And your desk gives you away as well, it’s the cleanest in the room.”
Myles looked like he was going to blow his stack again, but D stepped in and interrupted. “Ok, ok, Myles, calm down. Dr. Brennan is our guest today. But if I might say, Doctor. You do have a talent for reading the social anthropology of a room. Well done, I might add.” Temperance looked around and saw the confirming nods of the other people in the room. Feeling a bit out of place because she had done exactly what Booth didn’t want her to do, she smiled and gave a gracious nod. “So, we’d like to discuss your case with you, briefly and to go over some details. Would that be ok?” She nodded again and stepped back to Booth’s side, feeling suddenly shy.
Myles looked down at his desk, muttering under his breath. Bobby shot a glance towards Tara, pleased to find her looking at him as well, he smirked in her general direction and noted how quickly she turned red and looked down at her computer. Lucy and Sue exchanged glances. D motioned toward Jack as if to ask him to start the meeting. Jack loosened his tie with his finger. “Tara, the screen please?” He asked. Tara moved to put up the information. “Dr. Brennan, we feel you are in danger from this man’s crew. Arif Dessa has been involved in terrorist actions towards the United States. His three most recent companions, Shamar Katufa, Omer Habnabi and Abdulihama Messiana, have been generating some chatter among our usual sources. Katufa disappeared two weeks ago. All Intel indicates that Dessa was displeased with his recent work. We have reason to believe, and they do too, that the case you are working on is Katufa’s remains. We’ve picked up enough off the wire to believe they are desperate enough to try something at the Jeffersonian party on Halloween. And it is our sworn duty to protect the innocents, in this instance that’s you.”
Temperance looked at all the Intel on the screen with avid interest. The work she did on the remains was never as fulfilling as this visit was. She was intrigued by the conclusions drawn by these people. Of course, until she could prove it all scientifically, it was just that, assumption and conclusion. She looked over at Jack. “I can see your point. I need to continue my investigation to fully prove your theory….”
Booth interrupted. “What she’s trying to say is it’s all speculation and assumption right now, and Dr. Brennan doesn’t work that way.” As she started to say something, he applied gentle pressure to her arm to keep her quiet. He continued. “We accept your offer of protection and approve of you working the case from this side. I think we should meet up at least once a week to keep each other apprised of the direction we are finding.”
Sue piped up then. “That’s fine, Agent Booth. But I think you should know that one of my informants has told me that an associate of Dessa’s crew, not one of the two remaining, but an additional party, has obtained employment at the Jeffersonian. They started work last week. Dessa’s crew already has it’s foot in the door. You might want to start looking over everyone who works there and double check your security features to make certain that no one gains access to the lab.”
Eight pairs of eyes swung Sue’s way, nine if you count Levi’s. Booth’s eyes narrowed slightly as he asked, “So when were you going to mention the new development? We’ve been here for a bit today.”
Sue stared right back at Agent Booth. “I would have shared earlier, but this is the first time we’ve actually been discussing the actual case this afternoon. I just found out at lunchtime. A lunchtime that I was so busy, Agent Manning had to take Levi for his walk today. Besides, no one asked yet if there were any new developments.”
“I see, sorry. I didn’t realize.” Booth had the courtesy to blush, as he realized that Sue had still been in the room, on the phone when he was talking with Tara. “Ok then. We need to start moving on those assignments and tracking down the identity of our new friend. Was there anything else you needed to ask today, Bones?”
Temperance shook her head. The normally unflappable doctor had to admit she was a little shaken, she didn’t usually know she was in possible danger until she was right in the middle of it. Finding her voice she commented “I told you I hate it when you call me Bones. All I want is a copy of the information you have about my alleged victim. Can you send that over to me?”
Tara nodded. “Actually, if you’ll just bear with me for about 2 minutes, I can print you up a copy right now.” She smiled warmly at Dr. Brennan and said, conspiratorially, “I understand about the nickname. He calls me ‘Tips’ and I absolutely hate it. We should get together sometime and I’ll tell you why his nickname is ‘Hoppy’. He really hates it.”
Temperance smiled back. “Oh, a nickname. He said he didn’t have any. I’d love to get together and discuss things sometime, Agent Williams.” She said with a twinkle in her eye.
Booth looked at her, worriedly. “All right. I think we’ve accomplished a lot for the day. Let me get Bones back to her bones. Maybe we can get a leg up on this thing. Should we meet next week or….”
Jack nodded. “Sure, next Friday, 1300? If either of us find anything important in the meantime, page the other and we can meet up earlier?” Booth nodded his agreement, and with a quick worried glance towards Tara, who was handing Temperance the papers, steered Dr. Brennan out the door.
