It's making me nervous that Jack is counting down. Somehow I feel like it's gonna be a countdown to something terrible instead of the dating rule being abolished.
Don't worry. The road is going to be bumpy. But, I promise Jack is counting down to something good!Chapter 6Myles paced up and down the corridor outside the bullpen. He was about to hand his house keys over to a complete stranger. Of course, it was one of Tara’s friends. Tara had vouched for her, but still, it was his house. He saw the young woman approach. At least she’s attractive, he mused. “Drew?” he asked as she approached. Seeing her nod, he smiled. Reaching into his pocket, he withdrew his house keys. “I believe you are here for these.” Then he caught sight of them approaching from the left. He moved out of reflex, drawing the shocked young woman into his arms and kissing her boldly on the lips. He watched as Jack and Sue passed, noting the questioning looks he received. As they disappeared into the bullpen, he released Drew from his embrace. “Sorry,” he mumbled. “That’s the couple we are trying to surprise.”
“So I gathered,” Drew said breathlessly.
You could kiss me any time for any reason, she thought. “It was just a reaction to a situation,” she smiled.
Myles blushed and nodded, “Exactly.” Seeing the expectant look on the young woman’s face, he rushed to explain. He didn’t want to hurt her, so he prayed for the right words. “It really was a reaction to a situation. You see, my heart belongs to someone.”
She just doesn’t know it yet.
“I understand,” Drew sighed. She tried desperately to hide the disappointment in her eyes. “I hope she knows what a lucky lady she is.”
Myles smiled, “I’m sure she does.”
Or she soon will. At that moment, he made a vow to himself. He was going to let Lucy Dotson know just how he felt about her.
Myles strolled into the bullpen. He grinned at his teammates, blushing as his gaze crossed Lucy. He glanced at Sue and Jack, dropping his head and avoiding eye contact. “Let’s get this show on the road,” he quipped. He spied Gracie lying on the floor near Sue’s desk. He did a mental double take. She looked so much like Levi. When he found his voice he asked, “New dog.”
“Yes,” Sue smiled. “Her name is Gracie.” Glancing at Jack, she gave him a small wink. “I’ll explain later, Myles. I think Jack wants to get things started.”
“Okay,” Jack walked to the whiteboard. “Anybody have any information on this case?” He watched as the team shook their heads. Something was not right about this case. He could feel it in the pit of his stomach. Something just didn’t add up. “Nothing at all?”
“No, Mate.” Bobby replied. “I have even talked with some of the actors and staff members of the Haunted Trail. None of them had seen or heard anything.”
“I tried to track down information with the local authorities. They had no knowledge of the incidents. I’m not sure they were even reported.” Tara said.
“This is a very strange case. The local authorities have no knowledge. The people involved with the event have no knowledge. Is it just me, or do you guys have a very bad feeling about this?” Myles queried.
“No, Myles” Jack frowned. “My gut is telling me the same thing. How did this case come to the attention of the Director when the local authorities don’t even know about the disappearances?” He shrugged. “Still, we have to follow through on this since it did come from the Director. So, let’s make some plans.”
The planning session was short. Myles would go in as a staff member. Tara, Bobby, Jack and Sue would go in as couples while Lucy ran the surveillance from the van. “Okay, guys. Let’s move,” Jack said.
“Hey, Jack,” Lucy called from the door. “Would you mind taking Sue in your car? I have to head straight to the apartment after this is over to check on the cable guy.” Seeing Jack nod, she gave him a smile. Despite some minor modifications, Operation Couple United was going as planned.
“Hey, Luce, wait up a second,” Sue called. “
Time for a minute alone with Lucy? I am going to make her squirm a little,” she signed to Jack, giving him a conspiratory wink. Seeing him grin and nod, she went after Lucy. “Lucy, what is all this about a cable problem at the apartment. When I left this morning everything was fine.” Sue watched as Lucy’s jaw dropped. She could see her friend’s mind working feverishly to come up with a plausible answer.
“It happened while you were out on your morning walk this morning. The cable in the apartment below us went out. The cable guy said it was a major problem and he would need to use our apartment to gain access to all the wiring. He called while you were out with Jack,” Lucy lied. Sue stifled a laugh as she saw Lucy glance heavenward.
“I see,” Sue sighed. “Maybe I should see if David could come pick me up, in case Jack has other plans for this evening.”
“David,” Lucy coughed. “I thought he was out of the picture.” The worried look that crossed Lucy’s face caused Sue to bit her lip to keep the chuckle from escaping.
What I wouldn’t give for camera.“Well, he is. For the moment. I can’t wait for Jack forever,” Sue quipped.
Not that I have to. Just eight more weeks.“Sue, don’t call David.” Sue could see the panic rising in Lucy’s eyes. “Give Jack tonight. I have a feeling he will finally make his move. If not, then I will call David.”
“Okay, Luce. But just one more night.” Sue turned and re-entered the bullpen.
Then the rest of my life.Jack watched as Sue re-entered the bullpen. He chuckled at the wicked grin on Sue’s face.
She must have Lucy in a panic. Jack waited until the rest of the team had left the bullpen before crossing to Sue. He gathered her into his arms, kissing her gently. “I want you to stay in the surveillance van with Lucy.”
“But Jack, you just said…” Jack silenced her lips with his fingers. “I know what I said, but you are going to stay with Lucy.”
Sue pulled herself from his embrace. Walking away from him to gather her thoughts, she turned to face him. “No, Jack. I will not stay in the surveillance van. I am going out there with you.”
“No, Sue. You are going to do as I tell you this time.” Jack responded, his voice rising in volume.
Sue couldn’t hear the increased volume in Jack’s voice, but she did see his reddening face and the vein that popped out in his neck when he was angry. She knew she should probably back down, but her pride wouldn’t let her. After all, he had said he wanted to give her back her independence and here he was, trying to take it away again. “Jack, I am going out there with you and that’s final. You can’t tell me you want me to have a new dog to give me back my independence one minute and then use your authority to take that same independence back,” her voice matching his in volume. “Come on Gracie.” Sue marched out the bullpen.
Jack stood rooted to his spot for a split second before rushing after her. He knew she was right. Her independence was one of the things that he loved about her. If he caused her to lose that, then she wouldn’t be his Sue. Catching up to her, he placed his hand on her arm. Seeing her glare at him, he swallowed hard.
Boy, she is ticked. “You still have to ride with me, you know. The rest of the team has already left.” He watched her nod and turn her head away. He followed her as she stormed to the garage.
The drive was painfully quiet. Here he was, his heart’s desire within reach in just a few hours and he was blowing it. He needed to apologize. He needed to let her know why he had reacted the way he had. He reached over and took her hand. He smiled when she didn’t pull away. Pulling the car over a few blocks from their destination, he turned to face Sue.
“I’m sorry, Sue. You’re right. I can’t offer you independence with one hand then take it away with the other. Your independence is one of the things that makes you, you. It’s just that…” He dropped his head to his chest and took in a deep breath. When he raised it, he felt the tears stinging his eyes. “Sue, please. I can’t lose you, too. Please.”
Sue scooted across the seat to Jack and pulled him into her embrace. This time, she was the one who offered him comfort while he cried. She knew the memories of losing Levi in a similar operation were playing in Jack’s mind. The wounds were still fresh. She felt his arms clinging tightly to her waist, like a drowning man would cling to a life preserver. She ran her fingers gently through his hair, offering him comfort with her touch. She felt the shaking in his shoulders subside and felt him lift his head from her shoulder. Sitting back slightly so she could better see his face, she took her hand and gently wiped the tears away.
“Jack, I need to do this,” she whispered. “Trust me Jack. I am not going anywhere. Besides, I’ll have Gracie if I were to get into trouble,” she smiled.
“But Sue, you’ve only had Gracie for five hours. She’s not Levi, remember.” He knew the argument was over and she had won, but he had to make one final effort.
“I know she’s not Levi, Jack. But we will be just fine. I have a feeling. Things are going to be okay. You’ll see.” She took his hand in hers, squeezing it gently and offering him a brilliant smile.
Jack smiled back. She was one obstinate woman. “Okay,” he sighed. “But I want you holding my hand the entire time.” Seeing the gleam in Sue’s eyes, he quipped, “After all, for once I am going to get to hold my fiancée’s hand in front of the team without raising their suspicions. I can’t pass that up.” He pulled the car back onto the street, glancing at the clock on the dash.
Eight more hours.
More later
