Chapter 6
As the team plus Tanya, Davey, Helga and Deanne met at the church, Sue explained the plans for the evening.
‘We have around 30 children, from 3 to 14……. We’re taking them trick or treating for around an hour, then back here for a few games, food, pumpkin heads and then a disco…….. take them back to the refuges then we get to clear up….. and I want to say again how much we and they appreciate all of you for helping out…….. Deanne and Helga are waiting here so the rest of you…… here are the directions for the refuges…. ‘
Pairing Lucy and Myles together and Tanya and Davey with people from the church they headed out.
‘How’s Luke doin?’ Jack asked as they headed off.
‘He’s good……. still very sore but thankful it wasn’t worse……. I want to thank you for listening this morning……. and for all this…… you’re a real hero you know that…..’
Jack felt himself blush furiously and was relieved Sue couldn’t see him.
Watching her with the four pre-schoolers they were looking after Jack considered not for the first time what a great mom Sue would be, he’d watched her with Danny and Amanda a number or times, thought about how much he wanted children with her, her patience and compassion overwhelmed him at times like this and he could feel the tears pricking his eyes.
‘You Ok Jack?’ she asked, touching him lightly on the cheek.
‘Yeah….. sad for these poor little mites, some people don’t deserve to have children…. What are the moms doing tonight?’
‘Having a little party, just to have some down time…….. give them a break from living in a small room……… I don’t know how they do it…..’ she answered sadly.
About to come out with some profound statement his attention was drawn elsewhere by 4 year old Leanne pulling at his hand begging to be picked up. Swinging her up he was besieged by the other 3 children also wanting to be picked up and carried.
Checking his watch he picked another child up and assured them he would swap after 10 minutes.
Watching him with the children Sue thought about his potential as a husband and dad before dismissing it as wishful thinking.

Chapter 7
Swapping children 10 minutes later and continuing to take turns they arrived back at the church where Jack gratefully received a mug of coffee from Helga who smiled broadly at him.
‘YOU STILL MAKE GOOD LOOKING COUPLE’ she signed, grinning as he scratched his head in bewilderment, unable to take his eyes off Sue who was wearing a dark red sweater which he’d only just seen since she’d had her coat on since he picked her up.
‘YOU ASK S-U-E DATE?’ she signed when Sue was out of sight.
‘NO’ he admitted.
‘WHY? S-U-E YOU GOOD TOGETHER’
‘I KNOW I LOVE HER SHE NOT WANT MAN HEARING’
‘S-U-E WANT YOU – S-U-E DUMP DAVID – S-U-E HERE DC STAY WITH YOU -YOU CLUELESS BLIND MAN MUCH’ Helga raised her eyes heavenward as she signed to him, sorely tempted to slap him around the head.
Jack almost fled when Deanne arrived and agreed wholeheartedly with Helga.
‘YOU DO NOTHING LOSE S-U-E – TOGETHER GOOD LOVE HER SHE LOVE YOU – YOU GOOD MAN J-A-C-K – SLOW BUT GOOD MAN’.
Aware he probably wouldn’t follow her signing she asked the next question, signing for Helga.
‘Jack, I know about the no dating rule, Sue’s mentioned it to me…. have you ever bent or broken the bureau rules for the benefit of someone close to you?’
He shuffled and stared at the floor thinking back to Bobbys’ gambling issues and Wes’ deception then mumbled an affirmative.
‘Bend it for yourself Jack, for you and Sue ……..’ she touched his arm as he looked up at them.
‘O-K MESSAGE I GET…’ he grinned at them as he signed and the two ladies breathed a sigh of relief……. If this didn’t work they were planning on taking the pair of them aside and telling them like it was.
As Jack watched them walk away he smiled as they did a very demure ‘high five.’
Sipping his coffee Jack watched a little enviously as Bobby and Tara led the children in a riotous game of musical chairs.
‘You OK Jack?’
His thoughts were roused by Sue approaching, concern evident in her voice.
‘Yeah…….. looks like they’re having a good time…’ he indicated to Bobby and Tara who were arguing over who sat on the last chair first.
‘Come and join in, Jack……’ Sue took his hand but he remained leaning against the wall.
‘I’m not big on games Sue… I’ll go see if Donna needs a hand with the pumpkins.
‘Ok………’ Sue watched him ambling away before turning her attention to Tara who was squealing in triumph having pushed Bobby off the chair.
Sitting in a corner with the children who were out of the game Sue watched the rest of the team, Luce and Tanya were running around with a couple of the smallest children who were squealing with delight while D was in charge of the tape player, Davey was running a check on his CDs and CD player while Myles was looking decidedly uncomfortable in the kitchen surrounded by a number of older children and teenagers.
Looking more closely at him she realised that, while everyone else was wearing jeans and sweatshirts, Myles was still dressed in his usual work attire and she wondered if he’d ever participated in silly games or ever had a real party as a child.
As the games finally drew to a close the children filed through to the kitchen to wash up and have something to eat, chattering happily as they did so.
Feeling a hand on her arm Sue looked up at Luce, ‘Sue…….. if it’s OK with you Myles and I will head off…….. Matt says they have enough help……’
‘Sure…….’ Sue smiled as she watched Myles slip his arm around Lucys’ shoulders as the headed out the door.

Chapter 8
Glancing over to Jack she saw him signing to Bobby, immediately regretting eavesdropping on them as she realised what he was signing.
‘You do realise Tara is going to kill you don’t you Jack?’ she murmured as he sat beside her.
‘Don’t see why…….. I promised not to say anything and I didn’t…… I signed it….. and if you don’t tell her she’ll never know………’ he smiled a quirky grin as she slapped him on the thigh.
‘Saying, signing……. It’s all the same Hudson……….’
‘Technically it isn’t…….’ his grin and wink reduced her to a quivering puddle
‘Well, whatever you did it looks like it’s working Hudson…….’ Sue pointed to where Bobby and Tara were talking together, ‘he’s asked her out ……. tomorrow for dinner…….’
‘Good………’Jack looked up to see Helga and Deanne staring at him encouraging him to say or do something.
To their acute disappointment and frustration he did zip other than head to Donna who was standing by the pumpkins.
‘Jack…….. it’s probably none of my business but when are you going to follow your heart instead of your head with that poor girl…….?’
‘Not you too Donna…….?’ He groaned, running his hand through his hair.
‘If I’m not the first to say something then maybe you need to be asking her out…….. and don’t tell me it’s complicated….. one day Jack you’ll wake up and find she’s marrying some other guy………wake up and smell the coffee sweetheart……..’
‘You ready to do these pumpkins Donna?’ Jack asked in desperation, why was it that suddenly everyone was commenting on his and Sues’ relationship…… or rather the lack of relationship.
‘You go call the kids in…….. then you can go work with Sue……… she’ll need someone who can sign to her………’ Donna smiled at him as he ambled off then quickly snuck over to D for a quiet word.

Chapter 9
Hollowing out pumpkins was much more up Jacks’ street and as the kids scooped out the flesh he found his gaze wandering to Sue, his heart pounding as he watched her laughing with the children while she helped them cut out the faces.
As the children made the pumpkin faces Davey started the disco and some of the helpers began the long process of clearing up. Finally all the children were returned to the refuges and what was left of the team set about the last lap of tidying away.
Having taken a bag of mushed up pumpkin flesh to the dumpster Jack ambled in to see D take Donna by the hand as Davey pretended to vomit before announcing, ‘My dad has asked me to play this as his favourite slow song……which just goes to prove that my dad is sad……yeuk, that’s gross…..’ he screwed up his face as D took Donna in his arms and kissed her slowly and tenderly while the strains of Lady in Red filled the room.
Not to be outdone Bobby pulled Tara in to his arms and began a slow amble around the hall.
Jack didn’t need to raise his head to know that Deanne and Helga were watching him.
Taking a deep breath he walked over to Sue, ‘Errrr…… this is one of my favourites…….. care to dance…….?’ He reached out his hand and held her gaze as he spoke.
‘I can’t hear the music remember……..’
‘I remember….. but I think we managed Ok the last time……’
As she took his hand he pulled her to her feet.
‘What are we dancing to Jack?’
Quietly Jack began to sing the words to her as she relaxed in to his hold.
The lady in red by Chris De Burgh
I've never seen you looking so lovely as you did tonight
I've never seen you shine so bright
I've never seen so many men ask you if you wanted to dance
They're looking for a little romance, given half a chance
I have never seen that dress you're wearing
Or the highlights in your head that catch your eyes I have been blind
The lady in red is dancing with me cheek to cheek
There's nobody here, it's just you and me, It's where I wanna be
But I hardly know this beauty by my side
I'll never forget, the way you look tonight
I've never seen you looking so gorgeous as you did tonight
I've never seen you shine so bright you were amazing
I've never seen so many people want to be there by your side
And when you turned to me and smiled, It took my breath away
I have never had such a feeling
Such a feeling of complete and utter love, as I do tonight
The way you look tonight
I never will forget, the way you look tonight
The lady in red
The lady in red
The lady in red
My lady in red (I love you.)
‘It’s been my favourite since the night of the auction Sue…….. you were stunning in that dress…………I…… I …….. errrrr…….’

Chapter 10
Noticing tears pricking her eyes and reading something different in them, and suddenly tongue-tied but oblivious to everyone around him Jack gave up talking and decided that actions really did speak louder than words.
Lowering his head he brushed her lips lightly with his before moving away to gauge her reaction.
As he lowered his head again she whispered his name into the kiss and he increased the pressure, nipping at her lower lip then soothing it with his tongue before nipping and soothing again, feeling her respond as she ran one hand through his hair while the other held him tightly to her around his shoulder.
Seeking access to her mouth Jack ran one hand through her hair while the other cupped her cheek tenderly.
His tongue tentatively explored the softness of her mouth as she moaned into him before reciprocating the action with her tongue and soon they were joining in a dance of love.
Parting briefly for air they were soon wrapped in each others arms as Jack poured three years of bumbling and dithering and missed opportunities in to wave after wave of tender but passionate kisses, expressing his love and desire more eloquently than his words could ever do.
Suddenly aware that the music had stopped Jack ended a kiss and looked around to see no-one there and the disco equipment all gone.
Checking his watch he groaned with embarrassment, they’d been kissing for over an hour and he just knew he would be the butt of the jokes and wisecracks from Bobby and D the following morning.
‘LOVE YOU’ he signed.
‘Love you too Jack……’ she whispered as he wrapped his arms around her and lent in for another kiss.
‘How about I get my purse and we continue this someplace else…..’ she pushed him away briefly and he nodded.
Picking up her purse and a set of keys she groaned as she read a note from Matt, ‘lock up when finished…….’
Exiting the church they headed to Jacks car, his arm around her shoulder, hers around his waist before reluctantly parting to enter the car.
After walking Levi they headed to Jacks’ where they fell asleep on the couch, curled up together.
