“You sure you’re ready for married life, son?” had joked his dad.
“I’m already doing all Sue’s bidding”, Jack countered with a smile, “might as well make it official.”
“That’s the spirit”, laughed his dad who drove him to the county office where one of his friends could expedite the wedding licence.
Then he was asked to review the guests list to which he added only one name, James Buchanan, since Sue already included both families and closest friends. When the women sought his opinion about flowers and food, he quickly learned to agree with Sue’s every choice and to ignore his father’s smirk.

Yes, Mr. Hudson... He's ready

After being forced to behave at his parents’ house, he had definite plan for tonight, and she was right, it didn’t include a ditch, but a nice hot bath or shower and a soft bed in a nice hotel.

This is a Flipreview ...
He entered the room and dropped the luggage by the bed.
“I’m going for a nice bath, Jack”, she whispered to his ear. “You’re welcome to join me.”
He loosened his tie and crashed on the bed.
“Finally alone, you and me”, reaching for the object of his desire. He ran his fingers over the smooth velvety surface. It was cool under his touch and fitted perfectly in his palm. An intense feeling of satisfaction washed over him when he closed his fingers before pointing it forward. A light pressure of his index finger was all it took to turn it on.
The television came to life in a swirling of colour. With the dexterity of a man used to take charge he flipped through the channels like he knew exactly on which one he would stop, while in reality he was surfing for pure pleasure, the images switching so fast he would have been at a loss to describe or name the program.
Sue stopped in the doorway, frowning. She would ban the television from the bedroom if that was her last accomplishment on earth.
Now back to the main programming ...
+++++
They delayed dinner to give Levi a long walk in a park after the long ride he endured. The stars were shining in a cloudless night and the blue moon offered enough illumination for Sue to catch his words.
“Where would you like to go for our honeymoon?” trying to sign it as he said it.
“Honeymoon”, her right middle finger moving across her mouth.
“Honeymoon”, imitating her.
“Can we really afford one, Jack?” knowing Jack wouldn’t claim any expenses for this trip so no one would know they only booked one room per night.
“Yes, angel”, caressing her side. “We’re getting married on Wednesday and we were already taking the rest of the week off, we could go somewhere. It doesn’t need to be far, just secretly located”, winking at her.
“Do you think it’s too late to reserve a little cabin near a frozen lake or in the mountains?” sighing dreamily.
“I’ll do my best”, he promised, and if luck was with him, it might even include a fireplace.
“As long as I’m with you, Jack, the rest doesn’t matter.”
“I wasn’t an option”, he chuckled. “You’re stuck with me for the rest of my life.”
“Sounds perfect to me”, cuddling to him.
“Sue”, lifting her chin so she would look at him. “You’re sure about moving in with me? I know that’s what I want, but not if you don’t.”
“Yes, Jack”, stopping to face him.
He wrapped his arms around her and pulled her to him. Her lips were cold. He nibbled on them before adding some moisture with the tip of his tongue. They parted, inviting him to deepen to kiss, but he resisted, teasing her instead. When she growled in displeasure, he indulged her, exploring every nook of her mouth. Skipping dinner altogether crossed his mind. He would much prefer work out an appetite. He ran one hand into her hair, gently tugging on loose blond strands. She gazed at him with hazy eyes.
“What would you say if we ...” She frowned in confusion when he didn’t finish. “Phone, angel”, reaching for his inside pocket. “Hudson”, and it had better be good, he thought.
“Sparky, you owe me one.”
“If it’s a beer, you’ll get it on my return, crash. Good nig...”
“Hold on, Jack. Don’t you want to know?”
Not really, thought Jack. “Know what?”
“The team got a commendation on the Huxley case. So I took advantage of our ten minutes of fame after the debriefing to petition for the abolition of the non-dating rule.”
“You what?”
“Jack, are you paying attention?” sighed his best friend. “That applies directly to you and your future wife”, as much as it did to himself, thought Bobby.
“I know”, Bobby having effectively grabbed his attention.
Sue was staring at him with curiosity, his monosyllable word not feeding much of her imagination, though she sensed a change in his body language.
“Like I said they like the way our team is working and they agreed to overlook our personal relationships as long as it doesn’t interfere with that good work.”
“Bobby, I could kiss you”, Jack blurted out.
Sue’s eyes widened in surprise and Bobby burst out laughing.
“I don’t think so”, they both replied simultaneously.
“It’s a figure of speech”, he specified before kissing the top of her nose.
“Glad we agree on that one, mate”, amusement still obvious in his voice.
“Thank you, Bobby, for saving our jobs. You’re right I owe you one.”
“Good. You get Sue to call Tara back to tell her she changed her mind and doesn’t want to stay in your guestroom until the wedding.”
“You want me to ... what?” not that Sue would be staying in his guestroom like she told the girls.
“Mate, read between the lines”, Bobby sighed. “Since Tara’s dad is still living in her apartment she’ll be forced to find another place, and I just happen to have an available guestroom.”
“And why do you want Tara in your apartment?” Jack questioned while Sue eyed him strangely. “Is there something between you and Tara?”
“You suggested I invited her for dinner and lent her my shoulder to cry on. Remember?”
“You and Tara?” Jack repeated, not quite grasping the idea.
“She’s a wonderful woman”, Bobby defended.
“I agree. It’s just ... I’m ...”
“Are you going to help me or not?”
“No, but you can help ME move Sue tomorrow night.”
“That would completely defeat my purpose.”
“Bobby, look at it this way. The sooner Sue’s room is empty, the sooner that woman Lucy talked to this weekend can move in, and the sooner Tara will be forced to ...”
“I’ll be there tomorrow night with a truck, mate.”
“Good night, Bobby.”
“Jack, what was that all about?” she inquired after he hanged up.
“Let’s have that conversation over dinner, shall we?”

“Does Bobby really have a guestroom?” asked Sue, still stunned by this turn of event.
“Yes. So you didn’t know about them? Tara didn’t say anything while she talked to you in the car?”
“Jack, she was in the bullpen”, she reminded him while stabbing her last baby carrot with her fork and bring it to her mouth. A faint smile appeared on her lips as she chewed the tender vegetable. And when a pink tip darted out to brush her lips, he was very tempted to leap across the table and lick the trace of mushroom sauce that lingered over her bottom lip. “But now that I think about it, Lucy did mention she had an interesting story about a kiss during a certain dinner. I guess Lucy meant that dinner you set Tara up with Bobby. You did encourage Bobby to make her feel better”, laughing at his dubious expression.
“So much for me owing him a favour. And it seems like he had his own best interest at heart when he fought the rule.”
“Be nice to Bobby, he’s getting a truck. It would be wonderful if Claire could move in with Lucy before Christmas. She’s been living on her niece’s couch ever since she landed in DC five months ago.”
“Where do you and Lucy know her from?”
“Church. She runs the new Sunday school program. Claire’s husband died in debts and she lost her house. She’s like an aunt to Lucy and I. It’s working out for the best, Jack.”
He reached out for her hand. He felt her pulse on her wrist accelerating under the pad of his thumb. Her plate was empty, and Levi was finishing his plate under the table.
“Would you like dessert?” hoping she would decline.
“What’s on the menu?” smiling coyly at him, her teeth grazing her bottom lip.
He wrapped her in his arms as soon as he heard the loud thump of the door closing behind them, forgetting all about the luggage he dropped at his feet.
“What will it be, angel?” attacking each little button of her shirt with dexterity. “Smoothie peach bubble bath or watery vanilla flavoured shower?”
“Surprise me”, she whispered to his ear, her breath tickling his lobe.
An intense feeling of satisfaction washed over him when the last button slipped effortlessly and her shirt opened over velvety skin yearning for his touch.
Light pressure of her palms moving upward over his chest was all it took to shed his pullover. Under her gentle exploration, his body came to life, her shy hesitation only heightening the swirl of sensations she was creating.
“This isn’t the bathroom”, she gasped when her knees touched the side of the bed and she tumbled backward, Jack landing over her.
“I’m surprising you”, he murmured before taking possession of her lips.
Their lovemaking lasted well into the night, each wave of passion reaching a new high until exhausted they cuddled into each other’s arms.
“Nine days, Jack”, she sighed, contented, as he played with the ring attached to the chain around her neck.
“Do you think she’ll be with us at our wedding?” his hand migrating down to her belly.
“Who?” her eyes twinkling with mischief. “My mother or baby?”
“Ba ... both”, he amended with a grin.
“Well, as much as I like to believe my mother isn’t going to miss our wedding, I honestly don’t know how she’ll react to Sam’s presence, though I have a very good idea how she would react to baby”, she winced.
“That bad?” Sue nodded. “You never know she could prove you wrong, angel.”
“The odds are in favour of baby, not of my mother reacting kindly”, Sue noted, with a hint of sadness.
He liked those odds, even if it meant facing his mother-in-law’s wrath in the morning.

Why was it that the only morning she needed her dad to be home, he was working all day instead of his usual afternoons? Her mom welcomed them in the house, the smile plastered on her face not fooling anyone.
“If it’s about Anna, you’re wasting your time”, Carla warned them with finality.
Jack and Sue exchanged a glance. So much for that idea, they both thought.
“Jack and I have something to share with you”, her left hand displaying her engagement ring, as she tried another approach. “We’re engaged.”
“That’s wonderful” a genuine smile slowly emerging. “How long have you been dating in secret?”
“We never really dated, mom.”
“We fell in love working together”, Jack added. “And decided to get married.”
“I ... see”, eyeing both of them suspiciously. “So ... will it be a spring or a summer wedding?”
“Winter wedding, mom”, growing nervous under her mother’s stare.
“Winter”, frowning slightly. “Not the best season, but it still gives us a year to organise a beautiful wedding.”
“THIS winter, Mrs Thomas”, Jack specified. “On Dec 27th to be precise”, relieved his own mother was organising the wedding, finding it unconceivable to wait a year.
“That’s next week”, gaping at the news. “What’s the rush?”
“I love your daughter, I want ...”
“You got her pregnant”, stating the obvious reason for a quick marriage.
“Pardon?” never expecting Sue’s mom to be so blunt.
“You’re her boss and you took advantage of her”, glaring at Jack. “And now you feel obligated to make it right.”
“I ... what?” appalled Sue’s mom would even consider such a scenario.
“You’re right, mom”, those first few words shocking her mother even more, “this trip was a waste of our time”, getting up as she spoke, fighting to keep her anger and indignation out of her voice.
“Mrs Thomas, I am not marrying Sue because I have to, I am marrying her because I want to”, Jack declared as he stood up by Sue’s side with his arm around her waist. “I love her.”
“Do you honestly believe I’m that naïve, agent Hudson?” staring with incredulity at him before looking down at her daughter. “He didn’t even bother dating you before he dragged you into his bed.”
“That’s it, we’re leaving. Merry Christmas, mother”, throwing the journal on the coffee table before storming out of the house with Jack.

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
+++++
Jack had to bite his tongue in order not to laugh at some of the unsavoury adjectives Sue threw at her mother. He had been driving for an hour and her tirade was still relentless. While Carla’s ludicrous allegations initially shocked him, a part of Jack realised the words were spoken with haste and he suspected the older woman would come to regret them. How long it would take for the realisation to sink in was another matter?
“Why is she always jumping to the wrong conclusion?” growling in frustration, her anger having dissipated through her venting.
“You have to admit we did give her the wrong impression”, squeezing her thigh.
Jack knew they didn’t officially date, and for some people, including her mother, it might seem strange. But from three years of friendship they learned everything they needed to know about each other, he reflected. And while temptation proved impossible to resist, there was no lack of love or commitment in their relationship. He wished their wedding could have been sooner, not their honeymoon later. And if he had it all backwards, he still wouldn’t change a thing. He was the happiest and luckiest man alive.
“She was out of line, Jack”, Sue argued.
“I know, angel. I’m just trying to comprehend why. That was excessive, even for your mother.”
“You know, for one magic instant, I felt she was truly happy for us. Did I imagine that?”
“No, you didn’t”, having sensed it too. What Jack couldn’t understand was why Carla quickly erected a wall between her and her daughter instead of sharing their joy. “She loves you.”
“Funny way to show it”, sighed Sue, leaning her head against his shoulder. He kissed her forehead and they continued the trip in silence.
True to his word, Bobby knocked on Jack’s door within an hour of their return to DC.
“We’re having pizza, crash, want some?”
After offering the lovebirds his congratulations, Bobby took the pizza and forced the couple into the truck where Myles and D were waiting.
“Crash, you’re either desperate or smitten”, Jack whispered from the front passenger seat to Bobby who was driving, “or both”, unsure which one was the scariest concept.
“I’m just helping you, mate”, deflecting the question.
Jack gathered Bobby didn’t want to broach the subject in front of the rest of the team. But with the exception of Levi, the other passengers were not paying any attention at what was going on in front. They were talking about the upcoming nuptial with D apologising for being unable to attend and Myles promising to make an appearance.
“What’s going on with Tara’s dad?” opting for a more neutral subject.
“Well, the old guy is a drunk, but he told Tara he wanted to quit, except I’m not sure he remembers how it feels like to be sober.”
“How does Tara feel about it?”
“She doesn’t believe him, not that I blame her. He’s made empty promises all his life. On his request I took him to a AA meeting this afternoon. He finished his beer on the way there, swearing it was his last one. I ...” Jack saw him take a look behind him. “I know how addiction works, mate”, lowering his voice. “I’m not convinced. Anyway, want to fill me in on this wedding of yours?”

Why do I always have an urge to smack Carla when she opens her mouth?? Just to get her attention, you understand, so I can then give her a good talking to!! She will be the loser if she doesn't come around!!!
Sometimes dating is highly overrated!! Jack is right - in the three years they've known each other they have learned enough to know they belong together!! Of course, we should also take Jack's "non-dating" into consideration!! They've probably actually "dated" more than most couples!!!
Bobby is cute with his exuberance!! He's probably right about Tara's father though, he doesn't sound to me like someone who is ready to change!!!

I could see Carla's reaction if Sue was 16 and coming home from the prom engaged but she'a a woman -- Jack's a man (

whoops sorry lost my focus there for a minute thinking about how manly a man Jack is) ahem...and frankly nobody's mother has any business in their adult child's personal life unless they (the child) wants them there! I guess Carla over compensated for so long -- pushing Sue to achieve what she has, plus Sue is the only daughter and the youngest that she hasn't caught up to the fact that it's okay to let go -- Sue will do just fine on her own!

The snow covering the branches over their heads glittered like thousands of tiny diamond under the bright early morning sun.
“Too bad we cannot get the snow inside with the tree”, said Sue dreamily.
“I’m sure you’ll work your magic and our first tree will look magnificent”, he replied with confidence, before kissing the tip of her nose. She was radiant with her rosy cheeks and her glowing expression.
The sleigh and the horse were in the trail some fifty feet from them, with Levi keeping an eye on both from under the blanket on the seat. They were walking along a narrow path when Sue diverged in the deeper snow to approach a tree. Holding its trunk halfway up, she shook the snow off and a beautiful blue-green spruce emerged.
“What do you think?” her eyes sparkling with delight.
He appraised it carefully. The shape was right and the colour was gorgeous.
“A bit tall”, he noted. With all the boxes in the apartment, space was at a premium. “Where will we put it?”
“In the corner by the bookcase. There will be room ... as soon as you move all those boxes into the storage area”, wiggling her brows mischievously.
“I don’t recall you complaining when I found a much more pleasurable way to spend Friday evening than moving boxes to the basement of the building”, he observed, as he wrapped her in his arms before tumbling in the snow with her.
She was laughing, and he caught her hand in time before she could throw a handful of snow at him.
“Jack!” brushing the white powder off her face. “What am I going to do with you?”
“Everything your heart desires, angel”, trapping her beneath him. “Though in all honesty I would be partial to a frosty kiss right now.”
“Is that a new dessert you just invented?” she quipped.
“More like an appetiser”, he corrected, gazing intensely at her.
His deep brown eyes reflected so much love she felt powerless to resist him, and from the smirk on his face he knew it ... she was so doomed.

My apologies. I am avoiding the cesspool of my basement. But I got to thinking of the incongruity of calling any kiss from Jack 'frosty'.
Wouldn’t it be amiss
To call it a Frosty kiss
Since it would be given by Jack
Who apparently has the knack
Of melting the hearts
And all other parts
Of the women who love him
Oh what a conundrum
I do believe that there would be
Nothing frosty in a kiss such as he
Would bestow upon Sue
(or me…or you!)
Perhaps the drink should be called hot chocolate instead!
I'm off to make myself a hot chocolate -- and since I have organic, fairly traded, dark hot chocolate, I will definitely be thinking about You know who and his eyes

In retrospective Jack was very happy Sue dragged him out of bed early on Saturday morning to get their tree. He stood in the living room with a cup of coffee in his hand, admiring her handy work. Like she predicted, the tree fitted perfectly. Multicoloured lights shined throughout the branches, while a silver garland twirled all around it. She was hanging the ornaments from both their Christmas past, asking for the story behind each of the ones she pulled from his treasure box.
Sue gave their apartment a feminine touch that was sorely missing. They finished unpacking and he was amazed they found places for everything. He carried down the basement what they wanted to keep but were not planning on using in the near future, while he piled by the door in the hallway half a dozen more boxes of what they agreed they didn’t need. Jack was going to drop them at the Salvation Army as soon as Bobby showed up with the truck.
“So? All done moving Claire in and settling Tara in your ... guestroom?” Jack grinned, as they loaded the last box in the truck.
“You’re getting married in four days, mate, and I’m envying you”, Bobby grumbled. “Something’s wrong with me.”
“Trouble in paradise, crash?” concerned for his friend.
“No, but I’ll have to commute across town every time I want to spend quality time with Tara. Do you know how much time I will waste dream about her instead of ...” Bobby groaned inwardly.
“Where is Tara going to live?”
“I drove her father in rehab this morning. He is serious about getting his life together but he admitted needing additional help. Her mother is taking him back, providing he follows the entire treatment. So Tara got her apartment and her life back.”
“And maybe even her family”, Jack observed.
“She’s not dwelling upon it, mate. She learned a long time ago to make her own choices and live her own life. I’m just grateful Tara is including me in there. I’m thinking if things work out between us, we may just build together the family we both missed as a child.”
Jack smiled. Tara and Bobby had known each other’s even longer than Sue and him, and they also shared a strong friendship. He and Sue might after all attend a wedding in 2007.
+++++
“Tara”, glad to see her friend in the doorway. “Come in.”
“It’s beautiful, Sue”, her face lighting up like the Christmas tree. “Where did you find this not-so-little guy? He’s blue.”
In the forest the spruce looked blue-green, but in the apartment the blue outshined the green.
“It’s pretty, isn’t it?” said Sue, which reminded her she needed to take pictures. “Jack and I were going to have a quiet Christmas Eve, if you and Bobby have nothing else planned, we could have a little party.”
“Yes” Tara replied excitedly. “Does it include dinner?”
“Why not?” hoping Jack wouldn’t object. “We can share the cooking”, Tara nodding. “Want something to drink? Hot chocolate?”
“Yes, please”, following Sue in the kitchen. “I phoned Jack’s mom just before I headed here. She sends her greetings and said she would call you and Jack later this evening. We finalised the numbers after I received the last response this morning.”
“Last response?” Sue’s breath catching in her throat.
She had not heard from her parents since she dropped the journal on the coffee table. All her brothers responded to their invitation with the same enthusiasm. They couldn’t wait to attend their little sister’s wedding and meet the lucky guy. And their friends either declined due to previous commitments or confirmed their presence. Only her parents remained silent ... until now.
“I received this email this morning from your father, saying he and his wife would be pleased to attend but didn’t require any special travel arrangement.”
“That’s it?” staring at the sheet of paper Tara handed her. It seemed so impersonal.
“I’m sorry, Sue”, placing her hand over her friend’s arm.
“At least they’re coming. It’s something”, fighting to keep her tears at bay.
“What will you tell your grandpa?”
“Jack will talk to him ... explain my brothers don’t know the truth yet ...” Sue shrugged.
“How do you think he’ll react?”
“Jack thinks he’ll understand and simply enjoy his new family from the outside, until mom is ready to acknowledge him”, if her mom was ever ready, the thought saddening Sue. Maybe she was the one who embraced people too easily.
“I feel sorry for him after all he went through”, Tara sympathised. “On a bright side I picked up your wedding dress from the store like you asked me. I have it in my car. What do you want me to do with it?”
She and Jack were flying to Wisconsin on the 26th. She inquired if she could carry it on board but had not received a definitive answer. And after spending every lunch hour this week secretly shopping with Tara and Lucy, Sue didn’t want an overzealous airport employee to open her carry-on and show her dress to Jack. On the other hand, Tara and Bobby were driving up together.
“Would you and Bobby mind bringing it with you?”
“I promise to look after it like it was mine.”

Well I'm glad that the arrangements are coming together nicely, but I'm disappointed in Sue's parents response to the invitation. This is a time that she should be able to confer and chat with her mom --

Kav, I like your poem!! Yes, a frosty kiss doesn't really apply here, does it - it wouldn't be frosty for very long!!!
I'm glad Tara's father is really going to try this time and that her mother is going to take him back!! Tara now has her apartment back - don't worry, Bobby, it probably won't be for very long!!!
I'm sad about the email Sue's parents sent about the wedding!! Maybe they are waiting to get there and talk to Sue!! I hope they are going to allow her to have a happy day and the kind of wedding she deserves!!!
