I'm surprised the others didn't pick up on the whole black abyss thingie that Myles was describing.

And I love the possibilities that snow brings. Living in the south where we see very little of the white stuff.....when it does snow, it's magical!

Anticipation is building - and you are leading us along quite nicely Kav.
Sue&Jack
I love how you write their memories into the story. You write it beautifully Kav.

LOL @ Lizzy for pointing out that typo. Booby, it had me in stitches!
duckfan
Icicles, icicles...my kids learned a song in preschool that started that way! I love those ornaments and lights too.

I'm hoping that this type of magic doesn't fade with the season!

love the story Polar Express I used to read it to my godson Kyle who is crazy about trains, and I really am enjoying the story of the team their flashbacks are interesting and I love the present day stuff too. Can't wait for more.

The excitement is building as we head toward the evening. As Bobby would say, "Whoo Hoo."

“Oh for pity’s sake will someone get the woman a chair before she cracks her head open on the side of my desk?” Myles asked just a little too sharply. He amended his acerbic tongue by rolling out an office chair and pushing Sue gently into it. His eyes apologized when his lips wouldn’t

You write Myles so incredibly well. (Howie, too!) You know that his mouth usually speaks even before his brain engages. His reaction to the train was really something. I imagine that whole thing is more than a little scary for him.

Love Tara and Bobby (of course). cheer.gif

Hahahaha! Myles is hialrious! They're all starting to remember bits and pieces of that night. biggrin.gif Love the story Kav!

Poor Myles. I almost feel sorry for him, having to face fears from his childhood for his friends.... crying.gif

But I love Bobby and Tara's flirting. fanning.gif I wonder what Bobby's answer is going to be to Tara's question..... hmmm.gif
Kav

Jack was smart enough to know when a Special Ops needed elite personnel. He’d toyed with the idea of doing it without back up, but the stakes were too high to risk it. He decided to rely on the team he’d come to think of as family with this delicate and secret assignment. He started with Myles, knowing that the taciturn agent needed a distracting boost just as much as Jack needed the distraction. He expected reluctance, skepticism, a few sarcastic barbs, not the “I’d be happy to help the course of true love, Jack. You can count on me. I’ll keep Sue occupied over lunch.”

Lucy gave Jack her keys with a stern admonishment not to delve into anything personal and Tara’s fingers flew over the keyboard on a fact finding mission that she insisted was imperative to the success of the mission. Bobby merely shrugged his shoulders and said that as long as Jack was buying lunch he was in on the sting and so they all slunk away on various trumped up excuses leaving Myles and Sue alone in the bullpen by noon.

“Not very subtle, are they?” Myles smiled sardonically at Sue. “Still, it suits our purposes. You ready?”

Sue clipped Levi’s leash onto his collar and stood up to find Myles offering to help her on with her coat. She smiled her thanks. “Should I be worried?” she teased, glancing around at the empty desks.

Myles looked at her gravely. “No Sue, you should be honoured and grateful to be so very, very blessed.” He told her gently, taking her arm as they strolled out into the hallway, causing quite a stir among their fellow agents. It was Jack’s arm they had all come to expect Sue hanging onto and finding Leland so close to Sue was alarming to many. Neither took any notice as they entered the elevator and headed across the street to the park. It was the fastest way to St. Richard’s Church.

“Myles, are you all right?” Sue ventured half way to their destination.

Myles robust sigh challenged the wind in velocity and Sue smiled inwardly at his penchant for exaggeration in whatever he did.

“It’s just that you reacted so strongly to the idea of having the Christmas party at the Polar Express that I can’t help but think there’s something more beyond your dislike of trains.”

“I’m sorry I was so…” Myles sighed again, this time it was quiet and sad. “I can’t seem to stop myself from being thoughtlessly cruel when I feel cornered.”

Sue gave his hand an understanding squeeze. “It takes time to replace old coping mechanisms.”

“You know, it would be easier if you weren’t so outrageously patient all the time,” he complained with a wry smile. He stopped and stepped in front of her, placing his hands on her shoulders and looking earnestly down into her upturned face. “I am sorry. I don’t mean to be difficult though if you tell Manning I said that, I’ll deny it.” They both chuckled over the friendly rivalry between partners. “I don’t know what came over me – blind panic, I guess at the mere mention of spending any length of time in a train…even a replica of one.”

“Do you know why that is, Myles?”

They resumed walking and Myles tucked her hand into the crook of his arm. “It seems I had a traumatic event on a train as a child. I’m not sure how old I was, but I get the feeling I was close to my teens in which case you’d think I’d remember more of the incident. I only remember bits and pieces and they play out in my mind like a dream. Incredible fear and loneliness and suddenly being plunged into blackness. Not much to send me into the royal snit I was in this morning, is it?”

She’s gaze was sympathetic. “I can totally understand the darkness part.” She shuddered at the memory of last night, still fresh in her mind. She didn’t know what she would have done without Jack there to guide her safely through the incident.

“Are you going to start analyzing me, Thomas?” Myles teased, comfortable enough with her now to know that she would speak her mind regardless of what he said, and smart enough to know that if he listened he just might learn something.

“Nothing you haven’t heard before,” she assured him, calling Levi to her side as they prepared to cross over to the church. “But you know I’m an advocate of admitting when you need help and reaching out for it.”

Reaching out. Myles patted the hand that rested on his arm absently, his mind suddenly occupied with the image of little girl hanging over the edge of a precipice, reaching out to him. Warmth surged through him and with it a sense of belonging that he hadn’t felt in a long, long time. They entered the church silently and Sue gave him an encouraging smile as she sat at a pew in the back, Levi stretching out in the aisle beside her.

Myles made his way to the front and stiffly accepted the enthusiastic welcome of a buxom matron who insisted on hugging him every Tuesday afternoon. She also gushed unceasingly until the choir director tapped his baton and everyone scurried into position.

Sue watched him from the back of the church, with an almost motherly pride. She’d goaded him into coming for the tryouts. It was a dare he couldn’t back away from and though she couldn’t hear him sing, she knew he was good by the expressions on the faces of the other hopeful singers. Myles didn’t have to wait for the results of his audition, he had been accepted immediately and had spent every Tuesday and Sunday since then at choir practice. Sue was sworn to secrecy. “Keep this between us, Thomas,” he had ordered gruffly. She had reluctantly complied and but she didn’t stop trying to change his mind. Today was no exception.

“Rehearsal went well,” she commented as he walked back down the aisle to join her.

“That’s high praise coming from you,” he teased, shrugging into his coat. He glanced at his watch. “We have time to pick up a sandwich at the deli if we hurry. You know you don’t have to waste you lunch hour every week accompanying me, Sue.”

“It’s not a waste, I enjoy it,” Sue retorted. “Unlike you, I like spending time in church. It’s a nice peaceful break in the middle of my day.”

“I wonder what Jack would say if he knew I took you to church every week,” Myles smiled at the thought. “Maybe I’ll tell him I marched you down the aisle too.”

“That was only once,” Sue reminded him. He had practically dragged her up front the first rehearsal day so she could fill the vibrations of the organ. She did like feeling the hum through the floorboards, but she didn’t like being so conspicuously front and center. She spent the other Tuesdays in the back row, enjoying the ambiance, and the transformation in the countenance of Myles Leland III. It was a miracle she witnessed each week, and one that lingered longer as the weeks passed by. Myles wasn’t aware of that, of course, but the rest of the team commented on how mellow he was becoming. Until this morning, of course.

“Don’t look at me that way, Sue. I’m not doing it. There are some things I’m just not ready for.”

“You have a gift, Myles. A talent. Everyone in the choir says so. Why not share it with the people that mean the most to you? What are you afraid of?”

Myles stared at her irritably. She always knew how to get to him and she did it so sweetly too, it was hard to get mad at her. The truth was she was right. He was afraid. He’d spent his life wearing the façade of somebody else, and dropping it so completely when he sang left him feeling vulnerable and exposed. He had a hazy memory of a group of children staring at him, singling him out for some reason and they weren’t pleased. He supposed it was some time ago when he was in primary school yet it had left an indelible impression upon his mind all these years. He sighed. Maybe Sue was right. Maybe he did need to talk about it – clear the air and face the music, so to speak. He was being haunted by shadowy memories of late, and he put it down to stress. Funny how he could disperse a terrorist cell with very few qualms but facing his…friends…with the fact that he was singing in a special Christmas choir…left him frozen with fear. He’d rather do anything than take that risk.

“I’ll make you a deal,” he promised on the way back to the bullpen. “I’ll check out this restaurant of yours if you’ll let the whole choir thing drop.” Sue looked cute when she pouted, he thought and Jack was going to be in for a hard time. The poor fool wouldn’t know that she had him wrapped around her little finger until it was too late. It probably was by now anyway. “Deal?”

“Deal,” Sue conceded unhappily.

Pleased with his negotiation tactics he entered the bullpen humming an aria under his breath, Sue and Levi following behind him.

I love the friendship that has developed between Sue and Myles. It's terrific. And I'm so happy Myles is going to give the restaurant a try.

Once again, Kav, I love how you portray Myles!! All facets of him!! These posts answer our question as to whether or not Myles remembers his experiences on the Polar Express!! Of course, he hasn't figured out that Sue is the little girl that pulled him from the abyss!! Now that I think about it, she's still doing that!!!

So are you sure you've never met Myles? Do you keep him hidden in a suitcase and just bring him out when you need someone to walk the dogs and write about?

I meant to compliment your Howie earlier - I do love Howie (probably not as much as Flip loves Jack though). I may have to reread the train sequence...

Are you ready for pie yet? You didn't answer yesterday.

If you do then you need to click your heels together cause you ain't in Kansas anymore! You'll need to check around you for white coats.....

I've said it before but it bears repeating....you make me like, enjoy even, Myles. I know now, if their Christmas party turns into something from Christmas past, that Myles will have happy memories of his own to cling to.

Just caught up on all three of your last wonderful posts!

I love the way that you have written Howie. He spoke in the exact manner that he usually does, very realistic!

I also love the ways that you have written the interactions between the entire team....and that little B/T moment was just great!

It was also an unexpected twist to find that Myles sings in a Christmas choir...and the almost scandalous banter you have going on between Sue and Myles is good too!

Can't wait for more Kav!

Why do I have the feeling Sue will get him to the restaurant AND to sing for them ???

I think Sue will spend a lifetime pulling Myles from abysses. (Is that even a word? What is the plural of abyss? Abysses? Abii?) blink.gif

That whole scene was crafted so well - from the touching to the sounds to the memories. You make Myles so real. I loved how this scene had its own little climax in the end. You always to that so well. Every scene has its little climax (or sometimes big one).

Sue paused in front of her apartment door as she fumbled in her purse for her keys. She was as giddy as a schoolgirl going on her first date which was ridiculous for a woman of her age and experience. She snickered…what experience? She had none – the butterflies in her stomach were testament to that fact. This was Jack, the man she had loved for over two years, a dear friend, a man of character and moral fiber in an era when those characteristics were sorely lacking in eligible bachelors everywhere…and yet she was terrified. Not only about the newness of their relationship and the expectations that he undoubtedly had, but because she wanted this…him so much she didn’t think she could bear it if it didn’t happen.

First date jitters, she decided, even though technically their first date had already occurred – she just hadn't known it at the time. This was the one Jack had been practicing for last night and he seemed to have taken a great deal of care in arranging the evening, if the banter at the bullpen was any indication.

Closing her hand around her key chain, she pulled it from her purse and eyed the door with more than a little trepidation. She looked down at Levi dubiously. "Did Jack tell you what he was up to?" she asked. "Because if he did, you know your first loyalty belongs to me."

Levi looked away and sheepishly sank to the ground, covering his eyes with his paws.

"What did he pay you in? Dog biscuits or donuts?" Sue asked, slipping her key into the lock. She nudged the door open cautiously and peered inside while smoothing her hand against her nervous tummy.

She knew she was being silly – but Jack had been so mysterious and boyishly eager all day and she kept catching the rest of the team grinning like idiots the entire afternoon. Even Myles seemed to be in on the joke…an accomplice who had kept her occupied all lunch hour while Jack had been up to something. And then he had mysteriously disappeared mid-afternoon and Lucy had insisted that Sue leave a full hour earlier than her usual quitting time. Sue dropped her purse on the hallway table and eyed the mail curiously. There was lumpish manila envelope from her mother. She was just about to pick it up when Levi politely pawed her thigh.

"What is it boy, the phone?” she asked turning around and just managed to stifle her scream of surprise. After she caught her breath, his name came out in a strangled protest. “Jack!"

"Welcome home, sweetheart." Jack greeted her as if it was the norm for him to be standing in her kitchen, spatula in hand.

"What? How?" Sue stuttered completely taken aback.

"Lucy lent me her keys." He came through the living room to help her off with her coat. His hands nervously fussing at its folds as he hung it on the peg by the door. What he really wanted to do was pull her into his arms and kiss her confusion away. Replace it with a very clear need for his attention. He didn’t like the uncertainty he read in her eyes. It had him second-guessing this whole production yet he’d been so sure of himself not five minutes ago. Insecurity rose to the surface, it’s dark shadow clouding over his exuberant optimism. Looking at things through her eyes, he realized that he had taken a lot for granted, not the least of which was counting on her forgiving nature to look past his high-handedness.

The plan had just kind of snowballed along with his enthusiasm and suddenly he found himself in the midst of a Christmas frenzy. It was the tree that worried him the most. He knew that in past years Lucy and Sue had opted for a table top spruce because of happy-go-lucky Levi's endlessly wagging tail, but he hadn't been able to resist the 7 footer and it did look good in her living room. Lucy had good naturedly dug out the tree ornaments, lying them aside for the tree trimming part of the evening while Bobby had obligingly strung the lights, a task Jack detested. Lucy estimated that they'd need a few more decorations and had organized Myles into a shopping spree after work. Jack smiled in remembrance. Their rotor was as bossy as they came and Myles always meekly caved to her demands in the end.

"I know the tree's kinda big," he said, awkwardly breaking the silence that had stretched well past his comfort zone. "But trust me on this...I have a plan, okay?"

Sue wasn't even looking at the tree anymore, her eyes finally picking out the source of the multitude of rainbows dancing across the wall and along the ceiling. A myriad of colours that flitted across the room like fairy wings. "Oh Jack!" she breathed wondrously. "They're so beautiful!" She kept twisting and turning, craning her neck until she was pirouetting across the room, trying to take it all in.

Jack had painstakingly threaded all the glass icicles onto fishing wire and then laced them across the big windowpane in the living room. He hung more from the ceiling at intervals all around the room, creating a crystal canopy. The light from the setting sun shone through the windows and bounced off the icicles, splashing a rainbow of colour on the walls and floors and ceiling creating a breathtaking kaleidoscope. They were illuminating her face right now, as she stared around in wonder. He tapped her gently on her shoulder to get her attention.

"Bobby and Tara helped me. I got the idea this morning when I was talking to my mom. I remembered how she used to let us string up the old chandelier pieces to make rainbow catchers. It was a great sick bed activity. I think that's when she started the tradition. I figured the icicles would do the same trick and I..." he broke off when she lunged at him, throwing her arms around his neck and peppering kisses along any patch of his skin she could reach. He made sure there were enough exposed surfaces for her to work away on. When he couldn't stand the temptation any longer he captured her mouth in a heated kiss that left them both breathless. He pulled away only far enough to rest his forehead against hers.

"Wow!" he heard her utter in disbelief though he wasn’t sure if she was referring to the room transformation or his kiss. He pressed his lips on a tender journey down her forehead and tilted her chin with his hand.

"Is that wow good or wow bad?" he teased, his eyes caressing every inch of her face.

She wrinkled her nose at him and he gently nipped the upturned end, drawing back again to gauge her reaction. He wasn't disappointed. Her lower lip trembled ever so slightly as her eyes welled up. Stroking her cheek softly with the back of his hand, he watched in fascination as a single drop slid onto his thumb.

"Those are happy tears I hope?" His eyes sought confirmation even as he licked away the salty wetness. "Because I think...I know...I'd like to have a lifetime of making you happy, Sue."

She always knew she'd be helpless if he ever turned his charm on her and she’d been right. What was worse, he now knew it too. He was watching her; a glint of pure male satisfaction in his eyes and the way he looked at her was so intense...so intimate. It was a lover’s glance that felt like an embrace.

"It's beautiful, Jack," she told him. "I never would have thought of doing this but it's incredible. Look at all the colours." She tried to turn her head but he wouldn't let her.

He released his pent up breath and dazzled her with his smile. "I have a good view of them from here," he assured her, studying a rainbow patch that rested on her right cheek. "Did you know that colours have meaning? Tara made me memorize the rainbow ones. She said it was romantic and you'd swoon in my arms if I recited them. I think I'd like that."

"I'm not a swooner, Jack," Sue lied staunchly, though her heart was racing at his closeness.

Jack's eyebrows arched disbelievingly. "Is that a dare, Thomas? Because I never could walk away from a dare." And I could never walk away from you, sweetheart.

He studied her face critically for a moment, "Let's see, how about this one right here. It looks tasty." He traced the arch of one brow with his tongue, holding Sue steady in his arms when she jumped backwards in surprise. "Hmmmm. Green is for new growth, and I definitely like the way our relationship is growing by leaps and bounds."

He nudged her head sideways and his lips caressed her jaw line. "Purple. Spiritual. Definitely you.” Believe. He heard a childish voice admonishing him to open his heart, but really it was Sue who had reached out and dragged him back from the darkness of unbelief.

It was hard not to become jaded in his line of work, and unless you remained vigilant it was easy to lose some of faith's light. He’d been tiptoeing in and out of the shadows for some time and then Sue had barged into his life with enough illumination in her countenance to spill over onto everyone she came in contact with. Like him. “Everything seems possible when I’m with you.”

"You're not really going to go through all the colours, are you?" Sue asked, slightly embarrassed but secretly pleased. It made her feel cherished.

"Sh," Jack frowned, "you'll break my concentration. Tara drilled me all afternoon. She even sent me an online quiz and graded it." He stifled Sue's laughter with his tongue, in a brief reproach before lifting his head again, groaning. "Can't go there just yet or I'll forget everything else," he complained, coaxing her closer to the window while angling her face with as much care as a sculptor placed his model. Then he startled a squeal out of her by nipping her nose. "Yellow means playful," he explained with a wink.

Sue determinedly locked her knees to prevent giving him the satisfaction of swaying into him. She frowned at his knowing smirk and decided two could play the game he had started. Reaching up to tap his chin where a rainbow shimmered against his skin she asked, "What about blue?"

His hands closed tightly around the air between them -- the sign for trust.

Sue nuzzled just under his chin, her teeth daringly close to nipping at the bouncing blue light. It was Jack's turn to jump as she teased him mercilessly with mouth and tongue before pulling back. "And I do trust you, Jack," She nearly purred.

His hand trembled as he swept the hair back from her forehead, tracing the line of sparkling orange with his finger first. "Orange for courage and I know you have lots of it or you would never have tried that little maneuver on me just now." He buried his nose in her hairline, relishing her unique scent and then groaned. This game was getting out of hand. He thought he would keep it light...playful...but now that she was in his arms and reciprocating he was lost.

"What about red, Jack?" Her finger dipped inside his shirt collar and he felt a tug at his constricting tie and then the welcome release as her nimble fingers worked at one button and then two. He quickly captured her hands in his before she could make it three.

"But Jack, you have red right here," her finger probed a point midway down his torso. "I have to get to it to kiss it..." She tried to tug her hand free, but he held tight.

"Uh-uh," he groaned. "I get to do red. I've been building the anticipation -- you can't steal my thunder," he protested but his words were lost on Sue as she dropped her head and began nuzzling the exposed skin at his throat instead.

He twisted his body and walked her sideways until they were standing beneath a particularly rosy and wildly gyrating pattern. He pulled her hands down to her sides, urging her body flush with his. His hungry gaze swept up from her waist, lingering on the swell of curves beneath her red sweater. He could barely talk for wanting her so badly but he forced the words out of his mouth, grateful that she could not hear the jagged edge to his voice.

"Red, my darling Sue, means passion." His mouth touched the pale white skin at the vee of her top; his tongue casually dipping into the shadowy cleft that was barely visible.

"Jack!"

Energy crackled in the air between them as he raised his eyes, deliberately allowing her to see the depth of the passion in his. She read more than want there. More than possession. Desire. Satisfaction. The heat was tempered by emotions that gentled the onslaught of his mouth as it ravaged hers making Sue’s knees give way. She sagged into him and he groaned triumphantly.

"You, Miss Thomas, are most definitely a swooner."
