I was reading this out loud to my dogs because I always read them Levi stories but now they're like "Soooo -- see how important we are in your life? What would you do without us? Your life would be just as bad as the team's without Levi, that's what. So, we think we deserve a little more...walks, food, time, food, walks, a squirrel in the house to play with, unlimited barking privileges...." They've become impossible to live with all because of you!

I've never really thought about how much Levi affected the team! You're doing a wonderful job with this story and I'm looking forward to reading more!

that was a nice break from all the crying i've been doing from this story... my entire house was flooded up to my neck with tears, my carpet smells, my breakfast was all soggy, and fingers all are pruny...

and had just finished mopping it all up, too, when i read the last few posts....

I'm still Levi is so important... just as important as everyone else on the team!

Chapter 9

Clarence took Levi to a nearby prison where to his immense sadness they saw Howie lying on a bunk.

‘Howie was picked up in the steroid scam……… but no-one involved in the case thought he could ever be more than a two-bit con……. so he was never given the opportunity to change…….. the truckers’ body is still buried on the Interstate….. he was sent down for the scam and came out a hardened criminal….. since then he’s been in and out of jail……. remember how often Howie says you accepted him as an equal……….? You and Sue helped him turn his life around……. when you went missing Howie scoured the streets for hours, as devastated as the team………without you he started on a slippery slope, which will only end when he dies in prison after a lifetime of crime……….’

‘Is there much more?’ he asked, ‘I would like to get home to my family………’ he whimpered.

‘Just a few more places to visit……. hang in there and remember this all happened because you weren’t born…….the truth is what you will return to…..’

Clarence patted him on the head, he’d had a few odd cases but this had to be the oddest. Many times he was surprised by his Creator…… his best assignment had been the heavenly choir on a hillside near Bethlehem a couple of thousand years ago, then of course there was His return on Ascension Day.

Honestly I think this visit was the most realistic so far....Howie seemed like a slimy, bumpling character the first time I saw him....but I dont think even Howie could imagine his life without Levi

Cath, your version of Levi is so creative and amazing, as well as sad. I loved your reference to other assignments, of the birth of Jesus as well as His Ascension.

Poor Levi, so anxious to get back. I bet he won't look at any of the team in the same way again! And hopefully he'll remember his importance in their everyday lives...because a dog just has to have an important place in the pack!

Chapter 10

The next stop was a graveyard in DC, Levi read the inscription, ‘Danny?’ he asked quietly.

Clarence nodded, ‘the falafel house blew up but you weren’t there to dig Danny out of the remains……. by the time they’d finished searching for clues and returned to the shop the following day he’d died from hypothermia……. look over there……..’ Clarence indicated another grave.

‘Alan Hackford….. the millionaire?’

‘You remember the case?’ Clarence asked, continuing as Levi nodded, remembering the tears Sue had shed when she thought Troy had reverted back to a life of crime.

‘He died because Troy was in prison so he couldn’t give the FBI the vital information they needed…….. his remains were found by a couple of walkers a year ago……..’

‘Troy was in prison?’ Levi gasped.

Clarence nodded, ‘as with Howie, when he was picked up by the police no-one thought he could be anything more…….. he was sent down and his life spiralled out of control…….. he’s currently doing twenty years……… you see Levi, you and Sue had both been through difficult times, you both came through them tougher but with gentle hearts, the two of you helped the team to change and gave comfort and hope to others who were hurting……. Howie, Carole, Helga, Danny, Otis, Dan Malone, Jonathan Hammond, Beth Brunner…….. Lily…… remember when Jack bought you that new bunny……. for helping the team and Lucys’ Grandma to save her house…..? You helped find Alan Hackford, you sniffed out Sheps’ gun and badge and put his killer away……. You helped Sue and Jack to arrest Ted Collins, dug Danny out and helped when he didn’t know whether to tell Sue about the bomb….. without you there would be many people in jail or dead who should be alive and free and others who are free who should be in jail…without you Lily would still be in Mind Prophet and Beth would still be on the streets…. so you ready to go home and see your greatest achievement yet?’

‘My greatest achievement?’ he murmured.

‘Hey, you pushed Jack and Sue together, got them to admit their feelings……’ Clarence grinned at him.

Chapter 11

Flashback. Three months after Sue had decided to remain in DC.

They had worked past their initial awkwardness when Sue had wondered if she had made the right decision, wondered what, if anything, Jack had planned on saying that morning, when she had wondered if he would ever say anything.

Jack had reverted back to his bumbling, turtle-like state, had fluctuated between wishing he’d never opened to mouth to wishing he’d kept going despite the interruption.

Now they were back in their old routine, close friends who enjoyed each others company and spent a good deal of time together and it was almost as though the conversation in the corridor had never happened, except they both knew it had, they both had questions they wanted answered, they both had things they wanted to say and to have heard…….

Tonight Jack had waited with Sue while she finished up her report on their latest case, having promised to take her for dinner when she was done.

He’d sat beside her as she typed and stared at her, itching to run his hands through her hair, longing to kiss her senseless, aching to hold her in his arms. Instead he had tried to content himself with sitting beside her and gazing at her like a lovesick teenager.

Sue had been torn between typing quickly so they could go for dinner and typing slowly so they could spend longer together. She was conscious of his closeness, could smell the aftershave he wore, felt his gaze on her and moved slightly closer to him, revelling in the feel of their knees touching as he leant in to her and made a couple of suggestions about the report.

Her hand lingered on his more than once and she briefly allowed herself to imagine them walking together holding hands, dreamt again of wearing his ring before focussing on the matter in hand……. the report which Ted wanted first thing in the morning.

Finally she was finished and he helped her on with her coat before placing his hand on the small of her back as they left the pen and headed to the elevator.

Checking his watch as they waited for the elevator Jack sighed, it was late and the bureau was almost deserted.

Entering the elevator he turned to Sue, leaning against the side wall as he did so, ‘any preferences for tonight?’

‘You choose Jack……. I chose last time…..’ she murmured, losing the power to speak momentarily as she stared at his luscious lips then got hopelessly lost in the depths of his dark brown eyes.

‘Indian?’ he suggested, smiling softly as he gazed in to her green eyes.

‘Great…….’ She answered when his flapping hand finally gained her attention and he repeated his suggestion.

What happened next remained a source of confusion, both claimed the other was the first to kiss but it was something they never regretted.
