Part 31
The guests all put on their Sunday best to Mr Leland’s Christmas party, even though half of them despised him they came, if for nothing else to look at the house and it’s wonders. Tara looked up at the intricate carvings on the ceiling in the foyer with an open mouth, Stanley and Marcus following her lead. She walked into the grand ball room flanked by her men, her fingers laced with Stanley’s and her hand enfolded about their son’s. The Hudson’s walked in behind them, also all hand in hand and they too were amazed at the grandness of the house., after that the Dotson’s, then the Gans, and a large percentage of the people from Charity all filed in, until the room was full, not only of people but of a large tree bursting with presents beneath and table filled with food. Myles took the stand to say a few words for the occasion.
“I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all to the first Leland Christmas party, the first I hope of many more to come in the years ahead. I would also like to take this opportunity to advise all my employees who are here tonight of some changes which will come into effect immediately. Tomorrow, on the 25th of December the factory will be shut all day. As from the 26th all male workers will be put back on full time, unless they were employed as part time originally. In the New Year after I have consulted with my partner in some length we will announce a pay rise too. I hope that pleases every one of you here tonight. I would also like to welcome and introduce to you my new business partner Mr Manning”
There was a cheer and Bobby took to the stand and thanked Myles for organising the party, giving Myles a look which said ‘don’t spoil it, let them think this was all your idea’
With that done Myles officially opened the party and let the games and festivities begin.
^^^^^
There was food, there were party games, there was dancing and for the kids there was Santa, who handed out the gifts from around the tree, every child had a gift and every parent felt the happiness from within, that Santa hadn’t let their children’s hope and faith down after all. Even if there wasn’t any more gifts in their own homes that year, even if they would struggle that Christmas, the New Year brought hope, restored respect in their employers, faith but most of all love.
Lucy watched all she loved enjoy the party with rapturous expression all over their faces, the kids finding some corner to play with their toys, the adults dancing, swaying gently to the music which had toned down now the night was late.
She looked around for Bobby, she believed that all this wouldn’t have been possible if he hadn’t come to town. Her gaze rested on Myles who was looking quite wistfully at the scene before him and she went to speak with him instead.
“Mr Leland” she said gently
“Lucy” he said straightening up
“This party it’s great”
“Don’t thank me. It was Bobby’s idea, he arranged it all, with the help of my sister. I know he let everyone believe it was me…but the truth is , it was him”
“Maybe by arranging it this year you will instigate it next year. Perhaps you have learnt something from all of this?”
“More than you will ever know”
“Good. Happy Christmas Myles” she added with a sad smile.
Lucy was still looking for Bobby when he found her, and snaked an arm about her body pulling her close. “Mr Manning I have been looking for you”
“Now you’ve found me”
“I rather think it was the other way round” she smiled at him. “I….” she paused, sighed
“Lucy?” he asked searching her eyes for the truth in her soul
“Myles told me you arranged the party, and you let him take the credit”
“I wanted him to take the credit. It will be good for him, good for the town and that is important right now. However maybe you and I could have a private party of our own”
“Private party?” she asked not sure where he was going with this
“Yeah, come with me”
He led her by the hand through the wide corridors to a room which turned out to be the library.
“Wow I have never seen so many books” she gasped. Her gaze lingering over the wall to wall shelving all crammed with books of all sizes.
“I didn’t bring you here for the books”
“I guess not” she replied
Lucy felt his arm pull her close again, his breath hot on her cheek and she turned her face so that their lips met in a kiss so that her world began to spin.
“If” she said breathlessly “If you hadn’t saved Myles life in France we never would have met”
“There was a time, I wasn’t sure…… I felt that hadn’t been one of my best moves he was always so ungrateful, but now…”
“Now?” she asked gazing at him with tenderness and what she could only think might actually be love.
“Now …now with you in my arms and my heart I know it was worth it”
“A few weeks ago…until you walked into Charity, my life was….difficult a struggle but somehow your presence has managed to change all that and more, more than I ever dreamt and you know what?”
“What?” he asked softly
“It’s a wonderful life after all”
Bobby smiled and settled his mouth once again on hers in an all encompassing kiss which took them to a world of their own, a world and a life together that they would treasure forever
