Thank you for all your feedback.
I haven't got much of a post cushion for this story so please bear with me if the posts are a little short at times.
The Sheriff looked out his office window at the weather, it didn’t look like it was going to quit this side of Easter and it wasn’t even Christmas yet. His Deputy came in from outside and shook the snow from his jacket.
“There seems no point staying, folks know where to find us if there’s a problem, a situation” the Sheriff said
“Can’t see many people venturing out to Ike’s in this” the Deputy replied, the majority of problems they usually encountered were either at Ike’s bar or at Mr Leland’s canning factory and that wasn’t surprising, the man was as tight as Scrooge himself if not more so.
The door banged to again and the Sheriff was left alone, he went through his usual procedures of locking up and made his way to his patrol car, to navigate the treacherous journey home. Home where it was warm, where his wife would have cooked supper, where the kids would be playing.

The woman sighed in frustration as she entered the house, her husband had set the dinner on the stove. Myles Leland the third was a law unto himself she mused as she unwrapped her scarf from around her neck and kissed her husband on the cheek, then their son, who swiped the kiss away with a frown.
“How was work today?” the man asked
“Fine”
“But?”
She sighed, he knew her better than she thought he did “Leland” she almost hissed as though the word was distasteful on her tongue
“What has he done now?”
“Not only does he think it fit to put you on half time, he has also decided that I and the other ladies are half time too”
“Oh”
“Don’t Oh me, what are we going to do? Christmas just round the corner. How can we afford anything to make it special?”
“We have each other” the boy said
“I know and for that I am grateful” she told him ruffling his hair which the boy allowed without complaining. “But what is there to look forward to? 1935 is just around the corner and I have nothing to show for this year, which is almost over”
She sank into the nearest chair and after a nod from his father the boy went and fetched his mother a strong cup of coffee.
“You have us” he said, because his life was tough, he often seemed older than his eight years, that and perhaps being an only child.
“I do and that is enough but we have to put food on the table, we have to pay the bills and I just worry that we can’t, but don’t you worry about it” she told the boy
“I’m not worried” he replied, "Santa performs miracles, you told me and I have belief that he won’t let us down this year either”
The woman sighed, if only life was that simple.

The dark haired woman groaned as Mr Leland piled her desk with more paperwork. “I want this done before you go home” he said
“But Mr Leland it’s gone 5 o’clock already” she protested, as usual he was making her feel underpaid and overworked and she guessed he would never change
“If you don’t like it I am sure there will be a queue right into town to fill your position as my secretary"
She mumbled something under her breath but said “I am grateful for my job, I will be sure to complete all this before I leave tonight”
“Good” was his terse reply before he shut himself in his office a room in which he almost lived day and night, he didn't notice the pointed look she shot in his direction, or hear the sarcastic reponse to his orders.

The Sheriff squinted through the windscreen to see further than a few feet in front of him, something at the side of the road caught his eye, it looked no more than a pile of rags. He pulled over and went to investigate. It was a man, a large man to be exact. The Sheriff turned him over, felt his pulse and roused him enough to haul him to the car, there was no alcohol on his breath so the sheriff could only assume the cold had got to him instead.
“You’re gonna have to come with me” he told the man
“I haven’t done anything wrong” he replied through chattering teeth
“I didn’t say you had but if you don’t get out of the cold soon, you’ll die and I don’t want that on my conscience”
“Where we going?”
“I’m taking you home with me, you’ll be quite safe there I promise”
The man shut his eyes, he could argue, but he was too cold, too hungry and too tired for that and so he allowed the Sheriff to take him to his home.
